Rex Ryan: IK Enemkpali was a good teammate

AP

Linebacker IK Enemkpali didn’t spend much time out of work after punching his ticket off the Jets roster by punching quarterback Geno Smith in the face on Tuesday and it comes as little surprise that the team rescuing Enemkpali from the waiver wire was the Bills.

As signing Percy Harvin and Richie Incognito this year shows, the Rex Ryan Bills don’t hold past problems with teammates against players they think can help the team. It also didn’t hurt Enemkpali that he spent his rookie year playing for Ryan with the Jets (or that the Jets fired Ryan, perhaps) because the coach said Wednesday that he thinks Enemkpali is a good teammate despite what went down on Tuesday.

“We all know what happened,” Ryan said, via Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. “Obviously it was a terrible thing that happened. But IK made a mistake.  Instead of listening to this person, that person. . . . We had IK last year. . . . He was a good teammate. Simple as that. It we didn’t think he would be successful on field, in locker room, and in community, he wouldn’t be here.”

Ryan said that he hasn’t spoken to Enemkpali yet, but believes that he’ll learn from what happened with the Jets and that he can make the Bills a better football team this year. Enemkpali played six games for Ryan last season and had three tackles.

The Bills opened up a roster spot by waiving tight end Clay Burton with an injury. Presumably it was one that he sustained before Enemkpali came aboard and not the result of a Hunger Games-esque way of claiming a roster spot.

  1. Rex better be careful before he gets sucker punch from this clown. Percy, Incognito or IK will be fighting each other again, watch. All Bills got are bunch of lose,r sucker punchers, and that’s only off the field and too chicken to do it on the field. Long season for the Bills. They will not even be 9-7, it’ll be worse this year, bet on it.

  3. Only a tool would sign this guy after he sucker punched a teammate, the franchise QB no less. Lets not forget the cop he also punched in college, who’s next! Stay classy Rex! Just a heads up, have someone else cut him when its time.

Rex Ryan is an immature troll- not a great coach

    nobody’s said he’s a great coach.

he can be a good coach, however. which is close enough

  5. This guy should get another chance Ray Charles can see that Geno has douchy tendencies !

  6. Just like how we have the DOG WHISPERER , lets just say Enemkpali is the new QUARTERBACK WHISPERER, if you have Qb’s who can’t get their act together or can’t stop acting like tools, just bring in Enemkpali he will straighten them out.

Matt Cassell and EJ you are on NOTICE.

  7. He is a good teammate–except of course for that whole thing of breaking his quarterback’s jaw and putting him out for 6-10 weeks and risking the season for the Jets-but other than those very, very minor things, he is just a rock-solid teammate.

  8. jag1959 says: “IK Enemkpali was a good teammate”… Geno’s opinion may differ of course.

Who cares what Geno’s opinion is. Geno is the one that didn’t honor his debt. Geno is the one that couldn’t argue in favor of a family tragedy over paying a debt soon enough. Seriously, if you know the facts of the case, Geno was the one in the wrong. But IK was the one who isn’t the franchise QB and so IK is the one that got fired. IK was in the right to knock IK the fug out. Geno is a dirtbag.

And I don’t even have a dog in the race.

  9. As a Bills fan I’ve defended Rex on a lot of stuff, because of a lot of the attention he gets is simply him answering questions. But on this, I can’t defend him. I want to, but I cant. This just screams attention grabbing, regardless of what he says.

Side note, I also could see this being a classic Patriots move as well, BB quietly sticking it to a division rival.

  11. dave4nyfg says “”the franchise QB”?? Seriously? Geno?”

Yes. Geno is the Jets Franchise QB. After all, it is the Jets. So, as ridiculous as it may sound, yes, Geno is their franchise QB.

  12. And on the sixth day Rex created the Bills in his own image. And on the seventh day he rested.

  13. So if Rex thinks a guy who broke a teammates jaw is a good teammate than what exactly does it take to make a teammate a bad teammate? Regardless of the nuts and bolts of the dispute between Smith and Enemkpali you can’t attack and do serious injury to your teammate.

  14. maybe the fact that Rex worked with both of the dudes ,involved and still wants to sign IK, supports the idea that Geno wasn’t some suckerpunched angel?

  15. How is he not suspended yet? This was not a heated on field battle that got out of hand. This was an attack in the locker room that left the starting QB requiring surgery and out for 6-10 weeks not to mention all the drama that goes with a severely broken jaw (eating, talking etc.). I would think 4-8 games are in order here if not a full year ban.

  16. The circus keeps getting weirder and the ringleader had no idea what to do.

What a joke of a team.

  17. IK definitely overreacted but I can understand his frustration. He trusted that Geno would support his camp in Texas. Unfortunately Geno couldn’t attend (for good reason). Geno said he would repay the $600 debt in camp. Geno is the star young QB and IK is a second year 6th rd pick fighting to make the 53. IK makes 500k in 2015, Geno makes 1.3M and is showing him up over a $600 debt (for two weeks). That will make someone want to break your jaw. If Geno wasn’t going to pay he should have never said he would. And maybe righfully so but I’m glad IK is getting a second chance. Hopefully they both learn something from this.

  18. I think that shows us what Rex thought of Geno.
Don`t think for a minute he doesn`t still have players on the Jets who have told him the real story.

  19. Rex: I want you to punch Geno right in the face for getting me fired, do that, I’ll give you a job here in buffalo.
    IK: Done and done.
    Rex: Wow…that was fast.

  20. Geno walks out of radio city because he wasn’t first QB picked in that year draft like a spoiled brat… and he still is!. now, he won’t pay his loan from IK . Geno has a bad attitude, you can see it in his play on and off the field. $ 600 is important to a guy who is a bottom paid player with a good chance he might not be in the NFL . How much does Geno make? And Geno even poked him in the face with his finger! pay your debt Geno ….you rich spoiled brat!

  21. So let me get this straight… all a player has to do to get off his team and onto another one is punch out his QB? There are players screaming to get traded, no? Here’s your ticket out.

  22. One thing is for sure. The AFC East is certainly going to be entertaining this year. Will Brady play? Who will hit Geno next? What’s on Rex’s mind today? Is Suh enough? Actually, Rex alone makes the season worth watching, and I’m a Pats fan.

  23. Geno got served a nice slice of humble pie
Too bad he will be eating it with a straw.
Some people not all. use their position in life or work to bully, intimidate, sabotage, swindle amd generally treat people they feel are beneath them poorly. A lesson for everyone.

  24. That last line was kind of douchey. Personally, I miss the good old days when you could settle differences with someone without weapons, the law, or the media.

  25. This is why Ryan will never succeed as an NFL head coach, he has no business even discussing this matter, yet he chimes in on it when he should be worrying about other things…like his team, his quarterback and his second coaching opportunity. And then he adds, we all know what happened. Uhm, he doesn’t know a thing – the guy coached there and even then he didn’t know what was going on. That’s a proven fact.

  26. If any single one of us did this at work, we’d be facing chRges. Why do NFL players get a different standard?

  27. Rex is doing what Rex has always done. Attention grabbing or not, the Jets are a rival to the Bills, if even having him on your roster creates a little attention that Geno has to address it’s the types of distractions the Patriots have been using to get in their teams heads for years.

If the Bills hadn’t grabbed him I would have fully expected the Patriots to even if he only made the roster for one day.

Bill love to stick it to the Jets and I’m more surprised Rex beat him to it.

Why does the defense play hard for Rex? Because Rex has your back! Simple as that.

  28. Ryan’s got it figured out. Pick up all these characters facing suspension, and when one goes on, another comes off. The net talent loss is zero and it don’t cost hardly nuthin. It’s downright Goodell proof!

  29. Geno crossed the locker room and got in the guys face. he should have contemplated getting punched, he was the agressor. If Rex feels IK. is an upgrade over what he has its a good signing.

  30. This is a slap in Geno Smith’s face (no pun intended). This is Rex Ryan’s way of telling Geno he’s glad IK decked him.

  31. It never ceases to amuse me how many hypocrites are screaming “Violence is wrong,” but are fans of one of the most violent sports in earth.

  32. I don’t like it as a Bills fan but I could see why …he knows Rex’s system and he’s another camp body. He may not even make the roster but he could end up being a guy with something to prove and that could provide a spark for him. I’m all for second chances but I don’t like it

  33. It is a multi-prongedattack. He gets to show up Smith and the Jets, he gets to grab a headline, and he gets an angry young man to stir the pot. From the Ryan perspective it is all good. Nota big deal he hasn’t spoken to her kid -the personnel office made the claim (which is always going to go to Buffalo over New England, due to how they finished last year.)

Every new detail makes Smith look worse and the soon to be suspended linebacker less awful.. I suspect that was Ryan’s top priority.

  34. This is Rex’s last chance at a head coaching position. It’s not starting out very well. I like Rex and all, but you have to win. The sideshow stuff is entertaining in the offseason, but it gets old quickly with every loss that piles up. As long as E.J. Manuel is on the roster, it shows that Rex has no idea when it comes to QBs. If Rex had Aaron Rodgers, he’d be a genius by this time next year. Unfortunately, he’s looking more like a guy that’s going to be unemployed again. You need a QB Rex. You don’t need a backup LB, unless of course, you’re just trying to stay in the headlines. That’s starting to get old too.

  35. NFL; world best reality show. More fun to watch from a distance: Philly, Buffalo, Washington, Dallas, Cleveland, NY Jets, Dallas or San Francisco? Any other suggestions?

  36. LOL at all of the “Rex doesn’t know what he’s getting into…” and “Rex is destroying chemistry/locker room…”

Rex draft him and coached both IK and GEno. Don’t you think he knows each player’s personality?

And the fact he claimed IK on the waiver wire might speak to what Rex thought of Geno??

Rex knows what he’s getting, and he’s cool with it.

  37. Question: If your own teammate slugs you in the locker room and breaks your jaw: Is that a football related injury or a non-football related injury? Which injury list does Geno Smith get listed?

He was there high round DP and penciled in as starter again. So as far as the jets go, franchise QB. ( I was smirking as I typed that.)

  39. This technique for getting traded/released was perfected some 40 years ago down in Big D when Clint “The Mad Bomber” Longley clocked some dude name Staubach.
    Got himself out-of-town PDQ.

  40. this was over 600 dollars. Meaning Geno tried to take the rookie out of money, and the rook said on no u di’int, and Geno said, yes i di’id, and then eminemabwe said, i punch!

  41. I heard Belichick was trying to sign him but Rex and the Bills “Beat them to THE PUNCH” !!!!!

  42. This guy should be arrested and booked with assault. Interesting definition of what a good teammate is to Rex.

  43. Ryan said that he hasn’t spoken to Enemkpali yet, but believes that he’ll learn from what happened with the Jets

Yeah, just like he learned from the first time it happened when he was a LaTech.

  44. Buddy Ryan was over-rated. He had a hall-of-fame roster for a couple years, and took the credit for himself.

His sons are far, far worse. Truly miserable coaches that make every team they work for worse.

  45. There needs to be a period of repentance here for what Enemkpali has done. So what, he (“marginal player”) gets to play ball again just a few days after the incident, whereas Geno has to sit out until Game 10 (according to Mr. Gil Brandt). This must be Rex’s way of saying: “Thanks for getting me fired, Geno!”

  46. If you owe me money and you don’t want to pay it back and you make WAY more money than me, then I won’t think twice about sucker punching you either. People have become such closet individuals where confrontation is no longer an option or don’t want to admit they would do the same in that person’s position.

I haven’t seen anything positive about Geno and his character (lazy, unmotivated) since he came into this league and people jump in defense of him.

  47. I’m starting to lose respect for Rex…..time to win some games, can’t live off those two championship runs forever….my guess is Rex is going to pick this kids brain on what type of defense the Jets are running this yr and gain some valuable insight on what their doing on offense…I hope it backfires….this kid will never learn his actions have consequences…I hope the league suspends him double the amount of games Geno misses….

No, Belichick uses every part of the roster like a pre columbian american with a bison.
He makes mistakes but he doesn’t throw spots away deliberately.
It may be that Rex genuinely thinks jaw breaker is a good addition to his team, after all Rex knows him pretty well, but I think doing things for emotional reasons is Rex’s style not Bill’s style.

  49. I hope this clown take a punch at Rex Ryan. I’d love to see his big mouth wired shut for a couple of months.

Well, hopefully the NFL suspends him. Ray Rice is still being crucified and i consider a sucker punch just as bad.

    —————————

no matter what people say, Geno is not a woman.

  51. This is typical Rex Ryan shenanigans. A good teammate does not punch out the starting qb on your team no matter what the reason. Ryan was and idiot with the Jets and he will be an idiot with the Bills. No change here. Same old Ryan…

  52. I actually at one point wanted philbin gone and wished we hired ryan. You know his defense would be top 10.

  53. Hey Geno , Did you learn anything ?
You missed a couple of lessons in Middle School or High School. First pay your debts. Don’t stick your finger in someone’s face when you are clearly wrong and ask them what they are going to do about it. Then when you get what you were asking for, don’t go with the sucker punch excuse. I know when I was in High School when you came back after your recovery, you would have the opportunity to meet the person you said sucker punched you by the flag pole at 3:20 and settle it in front of everyone. If you don’t show up you are a joke for life.

  54. The Bills opened up a roster spot by waiving tight end Clay Burton with an injury

Wondering if Clay punched the head coach in the face, would he still have a job?

Thing is? It’s a GREAT move by the Bills. Have Ik start breaking QBs jaws and they’ll eventually HAVE to name a starter.

  55. Per the NFL network, NONE of the vegas odds for the Jets changed at all after Geno went down. What does that say???

I am glad IK got picked up. Geno was obviously the problem here. If you are the “leader” of a team do you really argue with a teammate over a couple dollars??? PLUS, witnesses say Geno stuck his finger in IK’s face!!!

Geno will be a backup next year for a different team…(Browns??)

  56. Jerry Jones and Rex Ryan should start spooning each other. They have sooooo much in common. It’s a match made in heaven, fellas, match made in heaven….

  57. I’m OK with it, frankly. IK made a very bad choice, but Geno Smith had large part to play in the situation and it sounds like he was goading IK and acting like he was untouchable. So, IK punched a d-bag for d-bag behavior. Bad decision, yes, but he didn’t punch Smith out of nowhere. This didn’t happen in a vacuum.
