Veteran wide receiver David Nelson had a few workouts with teams this offseason, but remained unsigned through the start of camp and said that he thought a big reason why was because teams questioned his commitment to football because of the extensive charitable work he does in Haiti.

Nelson, who was cut from the Jets last year after they traded for Percy Harvin, has found a team that doesn’t feel that way. The Steelers announced on Wednesday that they have signed Nelson and running back Braylon Heard. They placed kicker Shaun Suisham on injured reserve as a result of the torn ACL he suffered in the Hall of Fame Game and also waived/injured running back Cam Stingily.

Nelson spent parts of the last two years with the Jets and caught 44 passes and two touchdowns in 18 games. He was with the Bills from 2010-2012 and had his best year in 2011 when he made 13 starts and had 61 catches.

Heard had 368 yards and four touchdowns on 73 carries for Kentucky last season and went undrafted earlier this year.
