We’re well into the portion of the Bengals-Giants game decided by backups, but each team has suffered injuries to players who are in the mix for playing time come the regular season.
Rex Burkhead lined up as a slot receiver when the Bengals’ starting offense was on the field and then shifted over to tailback when the reserves rolled into the game. Burkhead ran four times for 23 yards, but he’s been knocked out with a neck injury. The Bengals call his return questionable and the team also lost Cedric Peerman, who took over at tailback, to a knee injury before the end of the first half.
They turned to James Wilder Jr. at that point and he plunged in from two yards out to give the Bengals a 17-7 lead.
The Giants, meanwhile, added to their tally of injured defensive backs when cornerbacks Trumaine McBride and Jayron Hosley were both forced from the game. Safeties Landon Collins and Mykkele Thompson had already departed and the team played without cornerback Prince Amukamara and safety Nat Berhe, so there are definitely some injury issues to sort out in the Giants secondary.
