The Rams have suffered a big loss on defense, as starting cornerback E.J. Gaines is out for the season with a foot injury.

Gaines, who started 15 games as a rookie last year, suffered a Lisfranc injury on August 2 when a teammate stepped on his foot in practice. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Gaines has had surgery that will end his season.

Last year Gaines was the only rookie in the NFL to start at cornerback for each of the first 16 weeks of the season (he missed Week 17 with a concussion) and he looked like a steal as a sixth-round pick.

With Gaines out, the Rams’ top two cornerbacks will be Janoris Jenkins and Trumaine Johnson.
