Vikings right tackle Phil Loadholt’s season has officially come to an end.
Loadholt was injured two plays into Saturday’s preseason game against the Buccaneers and reports that he tore his Achilles didn’t take long to surface. They’ve since been confirmed, leaving Loadholt with a lot of rehab work in his near future and the Vikings in need of someone to take over his spot on the line. Coach Mike Zimmer expressed confidence that the team can do that.
“Obviously we’re going to miss Phil,” Zimmer said, via the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “He’s a great guy in the locker room and he’s good on the field. But I feel good about the things that we’re doing with these guys right now and where they’re at.”
Fourth-round pick T.J. Clemmings replaced Loadholt against Tampa and will get the first crack at grabbing the job for the regular season. The Vikings took a look at the rookie at guard earlier in camp, but decided he was best suited to right tackle and they’ll be working to prove themselves right between now and the start of the regular season.
The Vikings signed tackle Stephen Goodin to fill Loadholt’s roster spot.
