Vikings place Phil Loadholt on injured reserve

AP

Vikings right tackle Phil Loadholt’s season has officially come to an end.

Loadholt was injured two plays into Saturday’s preseason game against the Buccaneers and reports that he tore his Achilles didn’t take long to surface. They’ve since been confirmed, leaving Loadholt with a lot of rehab work in his near future and the Vikings in need of someone to take over his spot on the line. Coach Mike Zimmer expressed confidence that the team can do that.

“Obviously we’re going to miss Phil,” Zimmer said, via the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “He’s a great guy in the locker room and he’s good on the field. But I feel good about the things that we’re doing with these guys right now and where they’re at.”

Fourth-round pick T.J. Clemmings replaced Loadholt against Tampa and will get the first crack at grabbing the job for the regular season. The Vikings took a look at the rookie at guard earlier in camp, but decided he was best suited to right tackle and they’ll be working to prove themselves right between now and the start of the regular season.

The Vikings signed tackle Stephen Goodin to fill Loadholt’s roster spot.

  1. Clemmings = raw, not to mention he’s coming off that foot injury.

If Clemmings starts and Kalil doesn’t clean up his act, this might be the worst pair of tackles in the NFL next year.

  2. It’s never good to lose a starter, but it may actually be a positive in the long run. Loadholt wasn’t that good last season before he got hurt and Clemmings was expected to be drafted much higher than he was. Clemmings was probably going to wind up starting next year, so this gives him a chance to get a lot more experience this year. It will be tough early on, but he’ll get better.

It worked last year with a guy named Teddy B.

    _________

Actually, he didn’t have a foot “injury.” He has a stress fracture in his foot but it’s never anything that has bothered him.

  4. Tough injury to the Viking’s best offensive lineman but they can make up for it by having Peterson go for over 2500 yards, Bustwater can post a 103 QB rating for the season, Wallace catch 100 balls for 1500 yards, in other words, lets wait till February when the Viking fans can claim yet another off season paper championship.

  5. T.J. Clemmings is a “better” right tackle today than Phil Loadholt period. For those of you who follow college football and the Vikings as much as I do, Loadholt is always to high, too slow and is always grabbing using his arms not to mention Loadholt is not as very good run blocker because he doesn’t get low to stay low. Clemmings is a much better athlete , quicker, faster, as powerful and is an excellent run blocker. By the way Clemmings never had a foot injury. The Minnesota Vikings fans are in for quite a treat this year as they will boast one of the top five tackle tandems in the league!

  6. With the dumpster fire that this O-line already was, it cannot afford to be without a below average starter in Loadholt providing continuity.

They would be better off losing Kalil who has been a compete disaster and a horrible starter the last 2 season. So horrible that he can’t even hold himself back from attacking Vikings fans offering him their support.

  7. I dvr’d the game and decided to watch it back last night just to focus on C.J. Clemmings. I’m no expert, but from a fan’s perspective, I actually thought he had a really good game. I never saw him just get flat out beat, and a couple of plays he knocked back the Buc lineman authoritatively. I’m definitely not hitting the panic button, and think we’ll be just fine with C.J.

Looks like the Lions or Packers are next for the injury bug. I don’t wish injuries upon any team, but the Vikings still have ZERO Championships.

    ZERO.

The Chiefs have 1 SuperBowl from 45 years ago and a grand total of 3 playoff wins since then. Congratulations on 1969… love what you guys have done with your o-line (see walking papers of Asomoah, Hudson, Albert and your #1 flop Fisher.. maybe he will play at replacement value in year 3).

Looking forward to another 45 years of KC being owned by Den, Oak and SD.

  9. You can say it as many times as you want but the NFL and the AFL were not merged until after the Minnesota Vikings won the last and final NFL championship. Then the leagues merged.

I know it hurts you to know it is true.

Just like Green Bay won 11 NFL championships and 4 superbowls.

  10. Tough break for him and maybe the team; that remains to be seen.

I just say the Vikes have no WORLD championships. Keeps the lawyer wannabes on the bench.

    —————–
But the championship in 1969 was still called the Super Bowl BEFORE the leagues merged together as a legal entity.

And no. The Packers have 9 championships and 4 SB’s which equal the 13 time world champions that they are always touted as having.

  12. You can copy and paste all you want. NFL Champions in 1969 were the Minnesota Vikings. AFL Champions were the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kansas city beat MN in the Superbowl.

The next year, there was only the NFL, not the NFL and AFL.

Obviously doesn’t know what he is talking about…
Clemmings looked great against the Bucks starting Defense, nobody got close to the QB from his side when he was in.
I hate to say anything bad about an injured player, it is probably an upgrade. Loadholdt looked like a Tackling Dummy crossed with a Turnstile last year!

  14. 1969nflchampionskansascitychiefs – I never said the Vikings have won the final game. I’m just saying the Chiefs have been terrible since 1969. I’d rather have my team be consistently competitive over a long stretch than 1 shining moment that I would have to cling to for half a century.

Since the merger, only one team has been more inept at winning playoff games than the Chiefs 3… it’s the Lions with 1… pretty elite company. But, at least Detroit’s came last year.

Vikings make the top 10 in most playoff wins during the same span. Oh, and the Vikings rank 6th overall in totals wins since the merger.

  15. You can copy and paste all you want. NFL Champions in 1969 were the Minnesota Vikings. AFL Champions were the Kansas City Chiefs.

No. The NFL even lists it at the NFC Champions (yes, formerly known as the NFL). Even though they hadn’t merged as a full legal entity on paper, everything else was already in place as a merged entity in the post season.

That’s why nobody lists the Packers as NFL Champions and Super Bowl champions in 66 and 67.

  16. Hey originate421, Good thing I’m not a Chiefs fan, please continue with your spastic rant tho…

FACT: The Vikings have ZERO Championships(Chiefs won the Championship that year which is now called the Superbowl, Period.)

I will agree with you….on one condition.

Based on YOUR criteria…..do the Packers have thirteen championships, or fifteen?

Thirteen means you’re wrong. Fifteen means you’re right.

Put your money where your mouth is. Thirteen or fifteen?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++My GOD how many more times are you going to post the same thing?!?…
And your Chiefs have SUCKED for the 45 years since then! NO Championships since NONE!
    7 Division championships since 1963! that’s 51 years!
Now open your mouth and brag some more!

The Packers have won 11 NFL championships and 4 superbowls. Not too hard to understand. If you want to add that up to 15, go right ahead.

Whoa…….nobody said anything about the Superiority Complex Championship! It’s yours…….. hands down.

  21. Remember back in the mid 90s how we all trolled the Usenet and America Online boards about how the Broncos had ZERO championships, how Elway couldn’t win the big one?

    ah, those were the days…

Too bad we can’t pick on Buffalo because they had legit AFL championships without a superbowl after it.

Or the Cards, damn that 1947 Chicago Cardinals team that keeps us from trolling them.

    ^^ delusional ^^

  23. Phil could road grade but plenty of turn style plays. It’s hurts but doesn’t stop the fact a te was going to line up on that side most of the season. Still huge hole at right guard.

Plent of work to do on backe end of d as well. O line and d backs. Same issue as the day they showed up for camp. Simms got his work cut out. Still going in right direction but this year will be a battle.

Las Vegas disagrees with your assessment of the talent levels of the two teams and unlike you, will back it up with hard cash. In fact, they want some of yours. So take your hard earned money and plunk it down on the Vikings winning Superbowl 50. The good news the odds will be long, the bad news is you will never see that money again.

  25. I love how this guy is giving my team 2 extra Championships just try and convenience everyone his team has one, how desperate and embarrassing.

Here is the actually correct tally of the NFCN Championships that are now called Superbowls:

    Packers : 13 NFL Championships
    Bears : 9 NFL Championships
    Lions : 4 Championships
    Vikings : 0 Championships

  26. Vikings are recognized by the NFL record books as having won 1 NFL championship.

Nobody cares about any troops opinion or interpretation of that championship.

If you have an issue with it then write to the NFL and have it changed.

    Vikings = 1 championship.

  27. Still not getting it……

The Vikings don’t a number listed on the chart of NFL Championships and Superbowls dude, it’s an asterik and fat (0) on the list, so you’re wrong. Get off over it and accept it.

FACT: The Vikings have ZERO Championships.

  28. Still not getting it……

The Vikings don’t have a number listed on the chart of NFL Championships and Superbowls other than ZERO dude, it’s an asterik and fat (0) on the list, so you’re wrong. Get over it and accept it.

  29. Who gives a piss about the past!
2015 Minnesota Vikings are a team on the rise and
one to worry about NOW, if your team is on our schedule!
You can bicker like Old Ladies at Tea time,
over who won what 4o years ago.
The NFL is about today, and most Professional
annalists pick Minnesota to make a serious playoff run, THIS YEAR!

  30. I have every reason to believe the Vikings have the potential to give the Packers a run for the money in the North Division.

But having talent and executing are two different things. That is where I think the Packers still have the advantage.

  31. Wow, what a gross thread. A guy gets seriously injured to the point of his career being in jeopardy and 2/3 of the comments are people ripping on the team.

I know it’s trite, but I can’t think of anything more appropriate: Get a life people. Please. For the sake of your disappointed parents.

  32. Do you want to know where the 1969 trophy is? Check out “the curse of Ed Thorpe.”

As one of your usual suspects is fond of saying; You can’t make this stuff up.
