Dolphins’ Louis Delmas carted off with knee injury

Dolphins safety Louis Delmas was carted off the field after he suffered an apparent knee injury in practice today.

According to multiple reporters on the scene, Delmas was in coverage during the Dolphins’ joint practice with the Panthers when he went down and grabbed his right knee. Delmas tore his right ACL last year.

When healthy, Delmas is a very good safety. But he has struggled to stay healthy. The Lions cut Delmas after the 2013 season because they questioned whether he’d be able to stay health, and although he got off to a good start with the Dolphins last year, his torn ACL seemed to justify the Lions’ decision.

Delmas was the second player to be carted off the field with a knee injury during the Panthers-Dolphins scrimmage, following Carolina receiver Kelvin Benjamin. Both were non-contact injuries.

  1. This is not good! I am at the Practice in SC and he could not stand. Kelvin Benjamin of the Panthers also got carted off, but he was able to walk on his own. I hope they are OK! This would be the end for Delmas for sure.

  2. This guy just cannot catch a break. It’s a shame because he likely would have made a few Pro Bowls by now if he could put together enough uninterrupted time on the field.

  3. That sucks. Delmas was the cog that made the defense work last year. When he got hurt, they played poorly as a unit. Hopefully one of the young kids is ready to step up.

  4. I hope it’s minor. He provides the energy we need on defense to be great, and he’s worked so hard to get back. The crazy part is you will see a lot of Lions fans on here saying I told you so about Delmas… Hope it’s a sprain… Indeed…

  5. WMU Alumni/Lions fan here. This is sad news for Delmas. A lot of Delmas fans up here in Michigan.

I’m fearful that this could be the end of his career. That knee just won’t stop giving him trouble. It’s too bad, he sure is a lot of fun to watch and is great to the fans. I used to go to Lions practices and he would hang after practice as long/longer than anyone to sign autographs for the kids.

    Good luck, Louis!

  6. I always likes Lou Delmas when he was with the lions, but the only season he ever made it through was the year they gave him practice days off every week. The guys knees are bone on none, he has a limited shelf life.

  7. Hate to see Delmas get hurt. Excellent leader and stand up guy. But, Walt Aikens is ready to move up and assume the starter role. He has shown remarkable progress over the course of last season and through camp this year.

  8. Interesting take FinFan68. That’s exactly how it was with the Lions. When on the field he elevates the whole defense it’s just those times are so few and far between.

Aikens has some dog in him, and he’s been mentored by Delmas the last year. I’m confident in him as well. We’ll miss the onfield leadership of Delmas, but the Dolphins DB’s are a more talented unit than outsiders realize.

  10. Lions fan here… was heartbroken to see Delmas go last year because he plays with a ton of heart and loves the game but didn’t fault the decision. Seems like every time he gets a head of steam he goes down with another knee. I hope he gets back on the field soon

  11. He was covering Ted Ginn on the play thumbs down.
and it is on the same day safty Don Jones came off PUP list.

Fins should weed out the injury prone players. It may sound harsh but after a few times it is time to do so.

  12. Sad sad sad….the injury bug shows it ugly head already. What now? We only have young inexperienced players backing him up. I can only hope its nothing too serious
