Steelers second-round pick Senquez Golson had shoulder surgery

AP

The Steelers continued adding young pieces to their defense in this year’s draft, but one of them is going to be out of the lineup for a while.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin announced that second-round pick Senquez Golson will be out indefinitely after having shoulder surgery on Friday morning. It’s not an unexpected development as the rookie cornerback was on the PUP list and reports early this month had surgery as a possibility.

Those reports said the surgery would be season-ending, something that wasn’t part of Tomlin’s announcement. Even if he does return at some point down the line, he’ll have missed camp and presumably a fair amount of the regular season which would make 2015 more or less a redshirt season.

Cortez Allen, William Gay and Brandon Boykin figure to play a lot for the Steelers at corner with Golson out of the picture. If Boykin plays 60 percent of the team’s snaps, they’ll send a fourth-round pick to the Eagles rather than a fifth-rounder.

  1. Hope Boykin starts. At the very least he’s a great Slot Corner. Still think the Eagles will miss him. But a 4th is better than a 5th so here’s to hoping!

If new defensive coordinator Butler can piece together a secondary with the flotsam and jetsam he inherited, he should be considered for coach of the year.

b-but Colbert wanted Golson and Jesse James all along. h-he didn’t want that Maxx Williams kid

What do you seriously expect Colbert to say in that situation? “Well, pretty much everyone knew that we wanted Maxx Williams but we got stuck with the sloppy seconds instead. Welcome onboard, Golson and James — just so you guys know, you weren’t our first choice.”

  4. Golson was a stud at Ole Miss. He will bounce back from this and will help the Steelers. Just won’t be right away. Kid is a ball hawk… Y’all will see in due time….

When healthy Golsons going to be a heck of a player in this league.

I wish I had the same kind of insight as you.

  6. Coach, make sure you only play Boykin when you need him. 59% of the time. That’s what Belichick would do!

  7. After seeing only a couple plays, I can tell you I’d take Jesse James over Maxx Williams in a heartbeat, straight-up, forget what round. MW is a role player, James will be tearing up the league in a few years.

Wow. You are better than 99% of the professional NFL scouts. It would take them hours of game film and hundreds of plays to reach the conclusion you did in “only a couple of plays”.

  9. Maxx Williams is going to have a field day against this secondary.

    Cheers!

He is going to have to be so lights out for the Ravens to stay within 14 points of the Steelers and considering their “soft” # 1 pick hasn’t played a down in the NFL Williams will need twenty catches a game with that pathetic receiving crew.

Golsons injury required surgery, whats Perrimans excuse?

Also, Maxx Williams has been terrible by all accounts. Great leaping drop in the endzone last week. Doh!

  11. I wish they made this decision a month earlier but I don’t know what they know about the injury.Get well soon Golson! Also, it’s hysterical Ravens fans are in here yapping, the Steelers 3rd and 5th WILL outperform the Ravens 1st and 2nd picks. Face it, Ozzie has drafted one good player in the last 7 years, he’s not good in the draft without top 10 picks.

I can’t take that credit, but I sure am glad the Steelers are part of that 1%.

  13. I see another day of the Steelers in the tiny heads of ratbird trolls. Enjoy your rookie bust Williams because floppo has no one else to throw to in that lame offense.

  14. Don’t like seeing players get injured even from rivals. Hope he recovers 100%.

Look on the bright side, it’s another year to grow. Maybe he can break 5’9″ legit by next season and reach the top shelf on his locker without the step stool.
