The Steelers continued adding young pieces to their defense in this year’s draft, but one of them is going to be out of the lineup for a while.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin announced that second-round pick Senquez Golson will be out indefinitely after having shoulder surgery on Friday morning. It’s not an unexpected development as the rookie cornerback was on the PUP list and reports early this month had surgery as a possibility.

Those reports said the surgery would be season-ending, something that wasn’t part of Tomlin’s announcement. Even if he does return at some point down the line, he’ll have missed camp and presumably a fair amount of the regular season which would make 2015 more or less a redshirt season.

Cortez Allen, William Gay and Brandon Boykin figure to play a lot for the Steelers at corner with Golson out of the picture. If Boykin plays 60 percent of the team’s snaps, they’ll send a fourth-round pick to the Eagles rather than a fifth-rounder.
