Donald Trump says NFL has mistreated his “great friend” Tom Brady

If we’re learned nothing else from this presidential campaign, we’ve learned that Donald Trump is a great self-promoter. And so it should come as no surprise that Trump has figured out a way to get his name in the news by discussing Deflategate.

Trump said on FOX Business Channel that he and Tom Brady are close, and that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was wrong to suspend Brady.

“I think it’s ridiculous the way they’ve treated him,” Trump said of Brady. “He’s a friend of mine, he’s a great friend of mine, he’s a great guy, and I think it’s ridiculous the way they’ve treated him. To spend $10 million in legal fees, and now it’s probably higher than that, it’s crazy. He’s a great star. They ought to go back to playing football. This country has bigger problems.”

Trump also offered some fantasy football advice, saying he’d make Brady his first pick.

“Tom Brady is just a great guy and I always take Tom Brady,” he said. “If you’ve done some friendly bets on Tom Brady you’ve done very well.”

In 1988, there was talk of Trump buying the Patriots. Trump passed on a chance to own the team that Tom Brady would later lead, but Trump remains a fan.

  1. This guy gets coverage everywhere. Maybe Trump should run for Commish. I’d be down with that. I mean, he’s good friends with Tommy fricken Brady.

  2. If I had even thought of a Trump vote. He wouldn’t get it now. As far as fantasy advise, Trump is welcome in my league. We have 12 players and Brady won’t get drafted until the 17th rd. as a backup at best.

  3. well trump just lost my vote… cant possibly vote for a “great friend” of a lying cheater

  4. He’s right about one thing the amount of money that is being spent on this charade. I remember that the NFL accused the NFLPA of spending too much money on defending players, hypocrite much…The NFL spends tens of million on the same thing. If the NFL had evidence and was consistent in discipline most wouldn’t end up in court.

Brady in the 17th round? Must be some league you have there.

  6. I doubt Trump passed. More like he was told he’d never be allowed to own any NFL team after the USFL lawsuit.

  7. How this guy is still in the race for being our next president baffles me

  8. As if I needed an excuse to vote for the Don. Now I KNOW I will be voting for him! As soon as Brady retires, which will be in around 5 to 6 years, I will be voting for HIM for president as well.

Tom Brady. Greatest NFL player of all time.

  9. We’re all waiting for the Draft Kings ad where he’s jumping around holding a giant check in one hand with his other arm around Brady, and an isht eating grin and his hairpiece falling off. That should help, too.

  10. It certainly figures that a ridiculous blowhard like Trump would have a cheating liar like Brady as a close friend. That makes perfect sense, doesn’t it? Those two deserve each other.

It’s because this is about a lot more than deflated footballs. Goodell is trying to establish his authority to levy penalties over issues that affect the game’s integrity. He’s willing to spend a lot of his bosses’ money to do it.

  13. I’ve never understood how you can claim to be a fan of the sport, yet hate its greatest player. That does not make sense.

You must not try to understand very often.

  15. Perfect marriage. Every circus needs a clown show and Trump drives the GOP clown car, cotton candy hair and all.
    “This country has bigger problems.”

Yeah Donald, any country where you are considered a serious contender for president, definitely has problems.

  16. Thank you for your support, mildly crazy trust fund baby. Now, please return to demonstrating how you don’t even understand how government functions.

Trump is 100% right on illegal immigration and Tom Brady. That is not an opinion it is a fact.

    Except it’s an opinion.

  18. Science is on Tom’s side. Its odd that a Republican would take that stance.

No one is actually sure Trump is a Republican.

Yeah Hillary is better because she

  20. “He’s a friend of mine, he’s a great friend of mine,” Based on that statement alone, Brady ought to sue Trump for defamation of character.

  21. if trump were serious about immigration, he would advocate punishment for anyone employing them.

but then trumps facilities would have no one working in the back of the house.

so, instead, he will advocate building walls built by potential contributors which will do nothing to reduce the flow.

  22. This is freakin hilarious, best laugh I have had in months !!You know what they say : You tend to hang with people that are like you.In this case,it is so very true !!

  23. Some people will scoff, but the rumor has existed for many years, that Tom Brady will get into politics some day as a Republican. His training in handling the media in press conferences is actually excellent training. He also has an ego big enough to embrace it.
Trump’s support is further evidence that the Republicans want him to emerge unscathed from Deflategate.

  24. Well, Don. If you had bought The Patriots, there may have never had been a NFL Quarter Back named Tom Brady. If you had purchased the team, you would have likely prevented them from being embroiled in scandal, as you would have your political future to look out for.
Just wish we could get back to football. But, some people believe the reward is worth more than the consequences. That is why The Patriots and Brady are where they are now. So, let the process they are in run the course.

  25. There are many Americans, Trump being one of them, who like Brady, and they are not necessarily Patriot fans. America needs heroes and too often, lesser men try and tear down Anerica’s heroes.

  26. If Trump gets elected, forget worrying about a Redskins NFL team name change for 4 to 8 years. Will be a rough day for some of you out there.

  27. Gotta admit, he’s a breath of fresh air. He calls it like he sees it. And he’s dead on here. No wonder libs hate him. Truth is a lib’s worst enemy.

  28. The House of Cheatichec, and Brady is the ruling king of how to cheat, get caught then play on public sympathy and now he gets Donald Duck wagging his useless duck tongue on his behalf. The Pats are confirmed cheaters, caught twice with their hands in the cookie jar, denied any wrongdoing, paid huge fines and got away like the scum on Wall Street and the Banks. No sympathy for Brady, he cheats, he likes to cheat, and Trumpisms won’t work, Donald is always on the guys who make the good deal – usually a deal that runs counter to public morality. Did Donald cheat in Punta Bandera? He sure as hell did, walked away and said hey not my name on that letterhead. Piss on Brady and the Pats.

  29. This coming from the guy who at one time promised he was going to start a new organization and run the NFL out of business. Seems as though that job went the same way his attempt at buying the Presidency will end, utter failure.

  30. The man has said blatantly racist things against Hispanics, and horrifyingly mysogenist things against women. That doesn’t take courage, it takes a startling level of ignorance.

  31. As a Brady fan, this endorsement is embarrassing!!! Trump is the World Wide Wrestling candidate of the Republican party. Geesh what a pompous, name-calling, classless egomaniac. 24 carat gold plated SEAT BELT BUCKLES on that plane of his? Really? How utterly tacky…

  32. Trump? LOL. Now there’s an endorsement you DON’T want. It’s like an albatross hanging around Brady’s neck now.

  33. You’ll note that all Trump waited to speak until issues in court made it pretty clear that the NFL would be losing. Also, Trump didn’t say anything of substance. All he did was attempt to associate his own name with Tom Brady.

When Trump made these statements he wasn’t standing up for Brady. He was standing on top of Brady to elevate his own status and market himself.

Trump is the genius who ran casinos into bankruptcy and has been sued for fraud countless times. He is a grandstanding blowhard and a coward.

  34. The NFL would NEVER allow Trump to join the fraternity. The League doesn’t want anyone who believes he is more important than “The Shield”.
