Sluggish start for Peyton Manning in Broncos’ new offense

AP

Tonight’s preseason game in Houston gave us our first chance to see Peyton Manning in new Broncos coach Gary Kubiak’s offense. So far, it looks like a work in progress.

Manning ran the show for three drives in the first quarter, and all three ended with the Broncos punting. Manning delivered some good throws and picked up a few first downs, but Denver’s offense came up short on third downs.

The Broncos decided to give Manning the day off in the preseason opener last week, but tonight he’s getting plenty of playing time, and he’s expected to play quite a bit next week as well. It’s a delicate balance for the Broncos, wanting Manning to get some live action in the new system but not wanting to wear him down in the preseason.

Based on the first quarter tonight, it looks like the new offense needs more work.
