Report: Reggie Wayne taking physical with Patriots

AP

When Kelvin Benjamin tore his ACL this week, some wondered if the Panthers would bring in Reggie Wayne to bolster their receiving corps.

The Panthers have opted to see what they have on hand already, which has left Wayne on the market. That could be changing, however.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Wayne is in New England to take a physical with the Patriots. Wayne is no stranger to the Patriots after spending 14 years with the Colts that featured many big games against New England and Patriots coach Bill Belichick said last year that Wayne was “still a very dangerous receiver.”

“Yeah, he’s still really good at everything,” Belichick said, via the Colts website.” [He’s] obviously a real smart and experienced guy; knows how to set up routes, make all of his routes look the same, does a great job of releasing and then at the top of his routes being able to create separation at just the right time when the quarterback is ready to throw. He’s been a key guy for them in critical situations and third down-type situations.”

Belichick made those comments before a November game between the teams and Wayne had five catches for 91 yards in that contest. That was one of the veteran’s better games last year as he looked to be on the wrong side of the hill after a 2013 ACL tear. He closed out the season with just one catch in Indy’s three postseason contests before having surgery on his triceps and knee this offseason, but he may get a chance to keep his NFL career going if the physical goes well and Belichick thinks his experience can help the Patriots this year.

  1. Damn, now the Colts will have to come up with a whole new scheme altogether. The Patriots could not bug the dressing room so they went and got a better option than bugging the dressing room. He knows too much.

  2. NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Not the evil empire. Say it ain’t so Reggie. Don’t go over to the dark side. I can never ever wear your jersey again. It would be just too sad. Please, for the love of all that is holy, don’t do it.

  3. It would be funny as hell if next week, Belichick says that “players who came over here from the Colts” told us that, for years, the Colts have been pumping in crowd noise from the P.A. system just like the Falcons.

  4. Wayne may be reaching the end but I doubt he has lost the ability to run the precise routes that have been his hallmark. Surprised he is still unsigned at this point.

  5. GASP!!!! But the Pats are cheaters!!! Why would Wayne ever want to associate with such a cheater franchise??? Surely, as a Colt, he knows their cheating ways and their over rated QB!!! This cannot be true!!!

    Yeah, thats sarcasm.

  6. “Pats can not draft any good players so they look to the retread market.”

If you mean just WRs and CBs, you’re right….yet they win anyway.

  7. “Pats can not draft any good players so they look to the retread market.”

Yeah they’ve only gotten to 6 Super Bowls in 15 years because they can’t draft “any good players”

    smh

  8. He walks in the room, gets tossed a ball and catches it….physical passed….

Hopefully he has another number he likes, #87 is sort of taken

  10. Another good move by the Patriots. Wayne wants a chance to win so he chose the best team to provide him that opportunity. I hope he learns what the Patriot way is all about and learns from it. Being led by softies peyton, dungy, polian, irsay etc. that culture has to be removed from his system so he can learn to be mentally tough and win games when they count.

  11. But, if a player is coming over from a rival team, doesn’t this blow the pats fans theory that the league is dragging them through the mud because of rivalries? Because players and executives care as much as we do about the teams they are employed by, right? They don’t just do it for money, right pats fans? That’s why Manning and Brady won’t even be at the same party together. Oh, wait. You mean they’re actually friends off the field? Well, that can’t be, everyone is jealous of the patriots according to every pats fan.

I’m not sure if you were being sarcastic but you might want to look at how the offense did against the Colts in the 2nd half of the AFC Championship Game

Oh yeah, and winning the Super Bowl

If you want a non-biased view of what happened in FrameGate I suggest you read Sally Jenkins in the Washington Post. N0 – actually I dare you to read it.

The same corrupt NFL folks who slandered Brady are also asking for billions of your tax dollars to finance stadiums. You might want to pay attention to that even if you want to brainwash yourself about Deflategate.

That’s entirely my point. But according to pats fans Troy Vincent is out to get them because he played for the Eagles and Bills. And Goodell had a job early in his career with the Jets, so he’s out to get them too.

  19. Gipson looked like he had a significant knee injury last night(he was having a good camp), LaFell hasn’t practiced yet after offseason foot surgery(had a nice yr last yr)and Edelman is hurt too. The ranks are a little thin. None of the younger WRs are stepping up much. No surprise there. If Belichick likes BCooks so much, maybe he should have traded up 9 spots and drafted him, instead of sitting on his hands and drafting DEasley

So I guess an all time great like Wayne (as you describe him) doesn’t have any problem joining a bunch of cheaters eh? Why would he ruin his reputation joining the Pats if he knows they are cheaters?

  22. You Pats fans crack me up. Have any of you paid any sort of attention to this offseason? You absolutely have NO secondary besides McCourty. Some of the defense players are hurt and are not playing. The entire offense is Brady, Eldeman, and Gronk and that’s it. They got rid of all of their RB’s. I don’t think they will barely win the division. And to all of you that say the Pats will win against the Colts like scores of 70-0, keep on dreaming. I bet Luck will put up some ridiculous numbers if all the offense is healthy and playing.

  23. No need for him. Brady makes all the receivers as we have heard ad nauseam. And it has been evident this preseason. (sarcasm)

You must have then have enormous respect for BB and TB. I’m sure they appreciate it.

On the other hand, every statistical analysis of draft history says otherwise. They are always top 4. You are now eligible for remedial NFL fan training or perhaps you prefer to remain uninformed.

  25. Great for Reggie! No doubt this would be a dream come true for him. Leaving behind a soft and poorly-constructed team of whiners to compete for a title with the greatest coach of all time and the greatest QB of all time. I hope it works out. Get him out of that rancid blue uniform ASAP.

What is there to know about the Colts?

    Soft, squishy defense.
    Lying, tattletales.
Play in the weakest division in the NFL.
Perfectly happy with second place banners.

Nobody needs to pick Reggie’s brain to learn these facts.

  28. While Goodell has sweeping powers to issue player discipline under the CBA, Berman made it clear he does not have the right to willfully misstate and mislead, gin up phony investigations based on pseudo-science and then issue draconian four-game suspensions simply because he’s furious Brady and the New England Patriots don’t say, “All hail to the emperor.”

    – Washington Post

  29. First part of physical.

“Reggie, raise your right hand and state that you are willing, at all times, to lie, steal and cheat for the mighty New England Patriots!”

  30. if the cheating pats are so great, why no SB victory for over a decade, and until victory is gifted to you on a silver platter with 30 seconds on a play everyone knows shouldn’t have been called?

  31. Tells me the news on Gibson might not be favourable 🙁

Always liked Wayne. Dunno how much he has left but I am happy to see him with the World Champions 🙂

Brady , Eldeman , Gronk , Amandola and Lafel plus add Scott Chandler. So pretty much the same Offense they had last season that was good for top 5 in the NFL.

And stop with the D talk. You have absolutely nothing to base an opinion on except for 2 preseason games.

So naive. Why did the NFL lie to the Patriots and the country about the PSI of the footballs? Do you honestly think they didn’t realize what they were doing here? Of course there are people in the league that are jealous of the Patriots. Also the NFL being out to get the Patriots and Wayne signing with them are mutually exclusive. It’s hard to get there and win. The Patriots themselves have lost 2 recently by fluke plays.

The Jets cheat, and they haven’t won one in 50 years. How come no one cries about that? Oh yeah, because they suck season after season.

  42. I was surprised that Wayne had 64 receptions for almost 800 yards in 15 games last year while playing hurt.

The Patriots must be concerned that one of their top receivers will not be ready to start the season because a fourth or fifth receiver would need to add value on special teams as well, something Reggie will not add.

And who is Brady? Some 6th rounder that they’ve keep for the last 15 years? Idiots! Everyone knows 6th rounders are just camp fodder.

Wilfork? Some nobody that the just sloughed off on the Texans first chance they got.

Mayo? Dude didn’t even play last year, and they are still keeping him around.

Yup, terrible all over. Probably won’t even make the playoffs…

  44. It’d be pretty cool for Reggie, when he finally hangs ’em up, to be able to say that he caught passes from Manning, Luck and Brady.

  45. To the haters that think Patriots fans live in denial I would suggest you look in the mirror. We have been on an unprecedented fifteen year run. Before that we had only one losing season in five years so it is really a 20 year run. We know this is a special time.

I am not religious but I count my sports fan blessings. As a young kid I watched the World Champion Celtics and Bill Russell, sneaking into the gym at Babson College where they practiced. Carl Yaztremski handed me a football I won in a raffle at St. Joseph’s School in Needham, where he lived as a young player. I grew up playing hockey (rink, pond, street) while watching Bobby Orr, who transformed playing defense into an offensive position. We had the Sultans of Swing, Rice and Lynn, as rookies make our 1975 playoff appearance along with Fisk’s historic home run in game six of the World Series possible. I was fortunate enough to share season tickets to watch Bird and Big Papi win championships.

All of it was surreal, but none of it matched the Belichick and Brady era, and all of you opposing fans know it as well.

70-0 is ridiculous. That said, everyone thought they were done after 4 games last year. I don’t expect them to win every year but 4 out of the last 15 ain’t bad.
