Packers plan on calling Reggie Wayne after he visits Patriots

AP

Reggie Wayne wanted to play again, and it certainly appears he’s going to have a chance.

He even has some degree of leverage, and didn’t have to go to training camp.

According to Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN, the Packers are placing a call to Wayne pending the results of Jordy Nelson’s MRI.

Nelson went down yesterday, reportedly with a torn ACL. While the Packers have done a great job in recent years of finding home-grown replacements for departing free agents, having a proven guy like Wayne is obviously an appealing alternative.

But Wayne is taking a physical with the Patriots now, so there’s no guarantee the Packers can get him in for a visit, unless they’re willing to enter some degree of bidding war for the 36-year-old wideout.

It also makes sense that the Panthers would get in the mix, given the season-ending ACL tear to Kelvin Benjamin, but at this point, there are no reports that they’re interested.

  1. I’ve got a hard time believing this report. Losing Jordy is huge, but the Packers might be the deepest team at WR in the league. They might give him a call, but I can’t see TT doing much more than that.

  2. The Nelson injury is a tough break for the Packers. I really enjoy watching Rodgers and Nelson play. Rodgers is unreal.
He is good enough to be able to compensate using his other receivers. Kind of like Brady has done for his entire career.
See you guys in the SuperBowl!
    Go Pats!

  3. Agree with first comment. After Cobb still have Adams, Janis, Montgomery. White as well. I’m assuming Abbrederis is out given that the Packers wisely do not allow players whose injury history is too concerning to continue playing for them.

  4. Would seem very unPackeresque for them to sign Wayne…don’t believe it would happen.

Packers do a great of developing young WRs, and Rodgers will certain elevate the talent level of any WR who plays with him.

News formulated by his agent, most likely.
    Not a Packers move.

Could be. I don’t think a phone call or bringing him in for a look is out of the question. Thompson is pretty big on “doing his due diligence,” looking at every possible thing from every possible angle. If they signed him I’d be shocked, but a phone call or a visit doesn’t mean much.

  6. It would be an easy choice to make, GB is a far better team to play for than NE, Wayne would be silly to pass up playing with Rodgers for the Packers to play for the Cheats.

  7. Wayne is a Colt. If he has a choice between playing in NE or in GB he is going to choose GB all things being equal.

Wayne has a legacy in Indy that would be severely tarnished if he chose to play for the cheaters. Simple as that. He’s a hero in Indy now but wouldn’t be. Maybe he doesn’t care but I would find that hard to believe.

  8. I will believe it when I see him wearing Green & Gold. This news is not coming from Green Bay.

  9. The Packers and Ted Thompson looking at signing a free agent?? I thought the Packers only built their team through the draft?

That said, wish Mr. Nelson a successful surgery and comeback.

it wouldn’t be the 1st time the Packers were desperate enough to bring in a WR

    Andre Bad Moon Rison’

And he ended up catching the 1st touchdown pass vs. the Pats in Super Bowl XXXI

  11. Edleman, LaFell, Dobson, Tyms and Chandler are all injured and off the practice field. The lack of timing with receivers showed itself in Sat. game against the Saints. BB always liked this player and respects his knowledge of the game. He should stay in Foxborough if physically able.

  12. To the guy above, more like even with Nelson, Vikings would still get sweep Packers. I guess next girl up for the Packers, who can really help them choke.

No, no, no. They build “primarily” through the draft, not “only”. See Reggie White, Julius Peppers, etc. They sign free agents, just not as often as others.

Thanks for the well wishes for Jordy though. I appreciate a nice dose of class on this site.

  14. I’d trade a 1st Rounder for Conderelle Patterson. On second thought, I’d just wait until he’s cut.

Next man up! Oh crap, these guys all suck…

You wish. Adams, Montgomery, Janis, and White are all better than your starters. And the TE Rodgers is looking very good too. Janis, in particular, is a bigger, faster, version of Nelson. His nickname is V12. He just needs consistent repetitions with the No. 1’s.

The Packers will continue to own the Vikings.

  16. Wayne has a legacy in Indy that would be severely tarnished if he chose to play for the cheaters

Waaahhhhhhh you guys find those bugs you’ve been looking for for 10 years to explain your annual roasting in Foxborough yet? Didn’t think so

Hmmm maybe you guys are so worried because Wayne will let the Pats in on all the crowd noise pumping the clots have done all these years

  17. I don’t see Wayne in Green Bay. The Packers have plenty of WRs. All they need is Rodgers. Rodgers makes WRs great, not the other way around. Just look at the guys who left Green Bay. What guys, right?

  18. Everybody calling the Pats “cheaters” as if their own team is some sort of squeaky clean collection of saints better check the history of the team you follow.

All 32 nfl teams have been caught doing naughty things in the last 15 years and your team is no different.

You all need to get off your holier than thou soapboxes.

  19. I don’t believe a word of it, because I have read on the internet many times from Packer fans that they have at least 6 WR’s in camp that could all start for any other NFL team. So, if a Packer fan opens his mouth, it must be true. So, don’t even bother to look up these guys, or look at their career numbers. Because numbers don’t mean a thing, it’s all in what you “know”.

  20. It looks like Wayne’s short list of prospective teams to join includes only the serious contenders.

He won’t lower himself to play for the hapless and tasteless bottom feeders.

Yes and no. Prisons are divided into general population and segregation units. There are even minimum security prisons.
For purposes of this analogy, most teams belong in Danbury minimum FCI in Connecticut, whereas the Patriots might have a stay in ADX Florence (supermax) next to Terry Nichols (the OKC bomber still alive), Ted Kaczynski (uni-bomber), and Moussaoui (the ‘other’ 9/11 guy).

  22. LOL. ESPN knows so much about what the Packers are going to do even before the Packers can get a thought process going on about it. Clowns! The Packers is not the type of organization to jump the gun, unllike ESPN on their “reporting”. I take everything they say with a grain of salt esp. when these village idiots don’t even know what the definition of “courage” is.

  23. “Yes and no. Prisons are divided into general population and segregation units. There are even minimum security prisons.”

As I said look up the history of your own team. Almost every team has serious infractions in its record.

  24. Reggie made the Packers choose easy by not even giving them one. He chose Brady/Garappolo over Rodgers.

  25. I think Dianna is reporting from a “source” not affiliated with the Packers. The Packers have a lot of depth on their roster especially at WR.

They view it as an opportunity for players to gain experience and improve.

The Packers want young hard working players and would never bring in a loudmouth diva receiver who has washed out elsewhere.

  26. I love how the Patriot fans like this signing.

Bill is going away from the strategy that made him great.
No having old players on his team. Also cheating. He seems desperate and signed an old player.

I love This. Good luck to you NE fans, you are going to need it, Patriots go 8-8 no playoffs.

Why? No receivers except for Gronk, who will be double teamed all season. Period. You team has no other real options. NO CB’s. Oh yes and the Rookie #1 option CB, just broke his wrist. Probably out for season.

Brady? Probably out 4 games. Looks like the Patriots have more holes than Swiss Cheese. 8-8 no Playoffs!
