Packers plan on calling Reggie Wayne after he visits Patriots

Reggie Wayne wanted to play again, and it certainly appears he’s going to have a chance.

He even has some degree of leverage, and didn’t have to go to training camp.

According to Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN, the Packers are placing a call to Wayne pending the results of Jordy Nelson’s MRI.

Nelson went down yesterday, reportedly with a torn ACL. While the Packers have done a great job in recent years of finding home-grown replacements for departing free agents, having a proven guy like Wayne is obviously an appealing alternative.

But Wayne is taking a physical with the Patriots now, so there’s no guarantee the Packers can get him in for a visit, unless they’re willing to enter some degree of bidding war for the 36-year-old wideout.

It also makes sense that the Panthers would get in the mix, given the season-ending ACL tear to Kelvin Benjamin, but at this point, there are no reports that they’re interested.
