Report: Mike Daniels, Packers far apart in contract talks

Defensive end Mike Daniels has provided the Packers with 14 sacks through his first three seasons with the team, which is a good total for a player at his position in a 3-4 scheme and good reason why the team has engaged in extension talks with him this offseason.

As of now, though, it doesn’t look like they are going to lock him up before the start of his final season under contract. Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that talks have broken off recently because the two sides are very far apart. Per McGinn, Daniels is looking for a contract in the neighborhood of $10 million per season -- which is in the range of the deals 3-4 ends Corey Liuget, Cameron Heyward and Cameron Jordan signed this year -- while the Packers are offering several million less.

Daniels wouldn’t comment on where things stood, saying that his agent handles those talks while he concentrates on football. Daniels did say he wants to stay with the “best organization in football,” but may need to play out the year before he can get a deal with the team.

Another year of strong pass rush from the inside of the Packers defense would drive Daniels’s price up since teams are always looking for players who can get after the quarterback. The Packers haven’t made it a habit of getting into bidding wars for their free agents, however, so that new salary might be coming from a different team.
