Maurkice Pouncey likely to miss first 10 games

AP

Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey appears likely to miss the first 10 games of the season with a broken fibula.

Although the team has not made the designation official, the Steelers’ website says Pouncey is expected to be placed on the injured reserve/designated to return list. That would mean he’d miss at least half the season. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that Pouncey is likely to return after the Steelers’ bye week.

Pittsburgh’s bye is Week 11, which would mean Pouncey would miss 10 games and then perhaps be ready to Week 12, November 29 at Seattle.

Of course, less than a week after an injury, there’s no way to say for sure how long it will take a player to recover. Pouncey might recover faster than expected, or he might need more time. But for now, set the over/under at 10 games, and expect the Steelers to get their All-Pro center back for what they hope is a playoff push late in the year.

If he doesn’t get lost or arrested on the way….

  2. ratbirds home of criminals! and sadly because of tomlin the steelers are following suit! steelers used to be a proud franchise. ever since tomlin they aren’t anymore. numerous drug charges by teammates, the hiring of a dog killer which was all his doing by the way…, stepping on the field in ratbirds game! very standoffish with the media.. tomlin has made our beloved steelers organization similar to all the other joke franchises out there. your oaklands, baltimores, new York teams, Philadelphia etc.. a lot of fans have jumped ship. I am proudly 1 of them. the rooneys have let this spiral out of control and now they are paying the price!

  3. I hope the steelers go 0 and 16 and tomlin gets fired! please allow this to happen baby jesus if youre listening! hes ruining our beloved steelers organization! tomlin loves a dog killer! only a soul less human can do that! AMEN

  4. It’s the Patriots that need to miss the first 10 games. They are getting away with way too much.

  5. Pouncy missed most of the 2013 season and the Steelers were 2nd in the division, even though the Ravens won the same number of games. However, edging out the Ravens in terms of the “ranking” seemed to qualify as an amazing feat according to Steelroid fans and they still trash talk about it like they trash talk about winning the division last year even though they had to bow to the Ravens on Jan. 3 and turn over the crown when they got clown stomped at home. My point is that injuries suck when they happen to your team but if you celebrate another team’s injuries, i.e. Perriman, Elam, you look and feel like a FOOL when it happens to you.

  6. The Stillers should trade him while he still has some value. “Glass Ankles” Pouncey is what he should be known as. Ever hear of braces? Geez.

Legursky will be a great fill-in for the 10 games. The Stillers should keep him around b/c Glass Ankles will get hurt again.

Colbert and his scouts should start looking at college centers NOW b/c they need a solid replacement for Pouncey in 2016.

  7. idiots, all of you. pittsburgh still goes 12-4 this year and represents the afc in the super bowl.

    BANK ON IT!!

  8. No need for to place him on the injured reserve /designated to return list. The team is just waiting for their shipment of Holy…er Recovery…Water to come in.

  9. I’ve broken my fibulas three times. It won’t take him 10 weeks to recover, especially not with the sports medicine facilities at his disposal. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he’s back on the field between Weeks 4 and 6…

  10. Its been a little bit of bad luck lately for the steelers but i’m fully confident the steelers will overcome this and go on and win the division this year. If anything it keeps guys like bryant and bell fresher towards the end of the season.

Recovery isn’t the problem. He’s on IR/DTR. Per rule, he can’t practice until week 6 nor can he be active until week 8.

  12. Steelers defense is in disarray and now they have two key starters injured or suspended. Questionable whether they can finish ahead of the Browns now.

  13. I just do not understand how people can be gleeful over a major injury to a player, regardless of what team he’s on. We’re talking about a guy’s livelihood here. I don’t like the Steelers at all, but give me a break. I hope he’s back in the field by late November and my team beats them anyway.

Let’s see how your ankle holds up to having your foot and leg rolled up on by a defender pulling down a ball carrier which was basically 500 pounds pinning his ankle to the turf.

  16. I just dont see how this makes much of a difference. Seems like this guy never plays anyways, and big ben hasnt had a healthy offesive line in five years. They will probably be fine.

Yes, but he hasn’t been placed on IR/DTR yet. They can’t put him on it until after the final round of cuts, which may be enough time for him to demonstrate he’s recovering a lot faster than expected, in which case they may just carry him on the 53-man roster and wait for him to heal.

  18. Now that troy is gone, pouncey is now the most over-rated steeler. like troy, often hurt and can’t depend on the needed contribution. a well-paid spectator

Isn’t final cutdown in like ten days? They aren’t going to know anything in ten days that they don’t know now.

  20. That is going to hurt more than people realize I think. Center is a very overlooked position. Pouncey has been snapping the ball to Big Ben for years now, people take for granted what the familiarity brings. Not to mention, Pouncey is not your average C in terms of blocking ability. There are very few (Mack and Kelce come to mind, but not many) that I would rather have blocking for my team.

Losing a guy like that in the middle of the line can be a killer to a line. People focus on the Guard/Tackle combo, since many of their blocks are in tandem, but the center is the one calling out those blocks, and he’s the path of least distance to the QB/RB.

There aren’t a lot of lines where you can look at them, and say the center is the “anchor” on the line. Even the 2 guys I mentioned above, Cleveland that guy would be Joe Thomas, Philly it would be Peters. The Steelers are one of those very few teams

The rule allows allows one player to be placed on injured reserve to be brought back to the active roster. Provided that the player was on the final 53-man preseason roster.

Even if they could do it now it would be foolish to do so. They may have another injury to a player they deem more critical.

  22. Pouncey couldn’t hold the great Steelers centers jocks ! He’s always hurt, he’s over rated, and vastly over paid. It’s a typical Colbert move to empty the bank on a few and never fill the voids with quality player but rather who’s the cheapest. They have the hardest schedule in the league this year and are already going to miss 4 starts ,maybe 5 . And just for the record, I’m a lifetime Steelers fan so don’t think this is coming from a Ratbird or Browns fan.

  23. I don’t get all the hate, nor the celebrating of an injury that some fans here
    seem to revel in.
” The Pouncey’s have never been arrested for DUI, drug use, domestic violence, etc. They’ve never been arrested or convicted for any crime.”

@ bengalsfan73 – ”Pouncey is made of glass plain and simple” ??
Perhaps you should re-watch the two plays where he got hurt and
tell us how your guy would have come out of that unscathed, tough guy.
