Saints spending one-fifth of their cap space on players not on the team

AP

Every NFL team has some dead money on its salary cap, money that is allocated to a certain player who’s no longer on the team. But no team is allocating cap space like the Saints.

In New Orleans, 20 percent of the cap is dead money, according to Spotrac. Among the players who count huge amounts against the Saints’ salary cap even though they’re no longer on the team are tight end Jimmy Graham ($9 million), guard Ben Grubbs ($6 million), linebacker Junior Galette ($5.45 million) and linebacker Curtis Lofton $5 million).

The Saints’ cap situation has been problematic for a while now, and the problem isn’t going away. Based on the contracts they already have, the Saints are projected to be $7.3 million over the cap next year.

The team with the lowest dead cap number is the Bengals, who have less than $1 million allocated to players no longer on the team. Bengals owner Mike Brown has been criticized at times for being miserly, but if you’re going to criticize the Bengals for that, you also have to credit them for being smart enough to make the playoffs four years in a row while not mortgaging the future with high-priced contracts for players who don’t last.

The player with the league’s highest dead-cap number is Ndamukong Suh, who counts $9.737 million against the Lions’ salary cap this year even though he signed with the Dolphins in March. After Suh, the highest dead cap number in the NFL is $9.5 million, the amount of the Ravens cap that is allocated to Ray Rice.

  1. Everyone who says the Ravens will be forced to renegotiate Flacco’s contract next season should take a look at their dead money situation this year. Between Rice and Ngata, there’s more than enough space already to take on a larger cap number for him. Renegotiating would be nice, but it’s not mandatory… cap keeps on going up.

  2. Umm…this report may be flawed…Doug Free is listed as dead cap space but last time I checked he is our starting RT

  3. Ouch. Not sure if that’s on the current GM, the guy he replaced (Ryan Pace), their capologist, or all of them… but no matter whose fault it is, it ain’t good.

  4. With all due respect to the Saints, man that crap seems like the Raiders of old!!

Thanks Reggie Mac for cleaning Oaktown’s mess left from Al (RIP).

  5. Guys that aren’t that good or cause team chemistry issues have to go. Preferably before they ruin a season. That’s what happened last year. I’d rather have a bunch of try hard rookies than cancerous vets.

  6. Yikes that’s not good. Hopefully the Saints can do ok in spite of their GM’s decisions (I don’t like or hate the Saints so might as well wish them luck).

Sounds like they tore a page out of the federal government’s playbook.

    LOL sad but true.

  8. Just curious, but how does Suh count almost 10 million against the Lions cap when he left as a FA? I thought his contract expired? Did he have a team option they didn’t pick up or something?

In the long run, they saved about 15 million with him gone even with the dead money, but was just curious how that worked

  9. @gabrosin
You’re not looking beyond the cap hit. The Ravens have $140 million 2016 cap dollars in existing contracts NOT counting RFA contract tenders or 2016 draft picks. Players cut now will also impact their cap next year. They will definitely need to find some dollars, possibly not Flacco, but that is the deepest well.

  10. $7 million over the cap projection eh? A certain qb is in the final year of his deal next year with a plus $20 million salary. If he is done, cut him and magically you are $13 million under. However if drew looks like he still has it (which seems to be the case) then some deals will need to be re-done. Plus armstead and hicks will have to be paid in the next couple of years. But Cap number is going up each year and saints have a bunch of room the year after next so even that is not as bad as it sounds (extend drew 3 years with a low 2016 number). This has been the same song for how many years? The front office will figure the numbers out. They always do.

  11. The cap issue this year wasnt good. But, they needed to get rid of those guys so they bit the bullet this year. Junior Galette’s disaster cost them about 12 mill next year and some this year. I believe the team upgraded each position minus the DE/OLB and TE. Offense should still be just as potent as it always has. Still have no clue where these guys get their numbers from. The saints are a projected 4 mill under the cap. They sit at 156 mill and some change and the cap is projected to be at 160. Its called research!!!! Im just a fan and i know more about the state of the article that you wrote. SMH

  12. Couple of things worth noting. Three of the four guys mentioned were jettisoned for cap reasons and that accelerated the hit they are taking this year that should largely have solved their issues. The big hit next year is almost all for cutting Gallette, and it is unrealistic to think they should have expected that.

In other words the current dead money hit was intended to get them out of long term cap jail and would have worked without the Galette nightmare

  13. this is the last year Woodley counts against the Steelers – about 7-8 million.

  14. Loomis! Best CAP man in all of football!

At least, according to Saint fans… Everyone else knows better.

  15. Basically 40 percent of the team’s salary cap is spent on the QB and players no longer on the team. Not exactly a recipe for success.

  16. I can sympathize. I’m spending one-fifth of my income on alimony for my first wife.

Cap is supposed to be 150 million.
    overthecap.com
    13.7 Million in dead money.
Not sure where you got the 160 Million figure. Hope it works out that way.

  19. datdude84, I think you used the 160 million figure for 2017 instead of 150 million for 2016.

It’s pretty clearly listed that Doug Free’s dead cap money is from a previous contract that was renegotiated.

  22. How is Suh costing Detroit any dead money when he signed with Miami as a free agent? Can someone explain this to me because I really can’t figure this out.

The lions added a phony year to Suhs deal. It voided at the end of last year. It spread out his cap hit but left dad money behind when he left.

Its signing and option bonus pro-ration from his previous contract that was terminated after the 2014 season. Free signed a new contract in March 2015.

Ditto. As if it were my fault that she had no marketable skills when we got divorced.

  26. Cap efficiency and team excellence isn’t a one-to-one relationship. Good coaching and poor cap management still beats good cap management and poor coaching.

  27. I tried to tell you Saints fans that tried to say how you ripped off the Seahawks. You guys are paying part of Jimmy’s salary, and all of Ungers 7 million, plus that “First round” pick (really an expensive second rounder since it was 31). Unger is a good dude, but he will get hurt, he doesnt play hurt like Graham does.

  28. Some of the names are interesting.
Kyle Orton is dead cap for 2 teams.
Greg Jennings 6 million in dead cap (more than Brandon Marshall and Miles Austin, but not as much as Mike Wallace or Percy Harvin).

Some players like the ROAR (retired on active roster).

I’m guessing the Raiders are second since it feels like they cut players every year?
    ———————
They had a lot more than 20% a couple of years ago. I think it was around 50M. They have about 9M in dead money this year, and most of that is for Tyvon Branch.

  30. All that dead money on a team that currently stinks is a formula for an upcoming tear down and rebuild. Saints fans should get used to a return to historically bad ‘Aints football like I remember so fondly.

  31. Loomis in New Orleans and Ozzie Newsome in Baltimore have been juggling the numbers for years, but ultimately the chickens come home to roost. It is like spending big on credit. Ultimately the debt has to be paid and don’t be surprised if it also reflects on the field with the loss of key players that could they could not afford to keep.

  32. Nah. Nowadays, Starting QBs are sucking up all the cap space. (Brees) Even though the Saints screwed up on some bad contracts, they need to know where the majority of the cap money is going to.

  33. Can someone explain why Suh is counted almost 10mill in dead money for the Lions, when he left as a free agent? Was it how the contract was prorated?

  34. The Dolphins on Deck… Really, everyone has been saying that for the last 4 years. How is it that they signed Pouncey and Tannehill and also got Suh? Oh…. Perhaps shedding losers like Ellerbe, Wheeler and Wallace. The Dolphins have the absolute best Contracts personnel in the league. I wish they had the best players and coaches, but we are getting there. Please all of you worry about your own teams… The Dolphins have never had Cap trouble even though you all keep saying they do. Take some time and look things up and stop repeating that same drool over and over.

  35. Same old doom and gloom reports on the Saints every year but they average double digit wins

    ____

Suh re-structured his original deal to free up some cap space a couple years ago. They pushed 9.7 million out to 2015, expecting to pay it as part of the next contract. Suh signed with Miami, Detroit still has the cap hit for 2015.

    A) The cap will not go up $14 million to $160 million. It will go higher than $150 million, but it won’t be near $160 million. Let’s call it an even $155 million.

    B) There’s a thing called draft picks that you need to sign every year. They also cost money. Since the Saints won’t be very good this year, they will have an expensive first round draft pick.

    C) Your $156 million in cap spending for next season doesn’t even include an entire 53 man roster.

    D) You’re not as smart as you think you are. Either are the Saints. After Brees bails on your team, it’s back to being the Aint’s.
