Antonio Brown gets $2 million moved from 2016 to this year

AP

Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert said recently that the team would not break from tradition to revisit wide receiver Antonio Brown’s contract this year.

Brown signed a six-year, $43 million deal with the Steelers before the 2012 season and approached the team this offseason about altering it to get himself more money. Colbert met with Brown’s agent Drew Rosenhaus, but said that Brown’s contract would remain unchanged.

That wasn’t quite right. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Tuesday that the Steelers restructured Brown’s contract and Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that the restructure involved moving $2 million of his 2016 salary into a bonus this year.

It’s a raise for Brown this year and, along with restructures of tight end Heath Miller and kicker Shaun Suisham, helps the Steelers gain $6 million in cap room. Per Schefter, that money will be used to offset the money they’ll be spending on injured players this year.

PFT has confirmed the restructuring and that Brown is happy to be the player that got the Steelers to change their philosophy on reopening a deal for a non-quarterback with more than a year left.

  1. Well, when your team has o playoffs wins since being tebowed out of the playoffs years ago, and when your organization has a history of cheating so much over the years, that only the Denver Broncos can trump (google your team cheats for these facts), then you sometimes have to take drastic measures to keep decent players from fleeing the dumpster fire

  2. How would moving 2016 salary into a bonus this year help the cap this year? Wouldn’t making it a signing bonus this year prorate it over the remaining years and cause a cap charge this year of like $400k and a $1.6m cap reduction next year?

  3. Guys do this all the time, then next year they’ll be looking at the contract saying “I don’t make enough money this year, I’m going to hold out”. They never give a team credit for up front money which should work its way into any calculations. Mark my words next year Antonio brown says he’s underpaid

  4. He certainly deserved it.

Don’t look now haters, but the Steelers are already $13m under the cap for next season before rolling anything over, or an increase in the cap itself.

And here I thought those restructures were “crippling to the future.”

    Bye.

  5. am glad PFT confirmed this news. BSPN likely had it wrong or just flat out lied about it.

  6. Steelers breaking “tradition” left and right! Tolerating pot heads hiring dog killers coach standoffish with The media and stepping on the playing field, now giving into contract demands just to make the baby happy! Unreal… I miss the days of when teams and their fans looked up to the Steelers. Now they are a punchline! Good ol Steelers ain’t what they used to be! thanks a lot Tomlin and rooneys!

  7. Also, this is a restructure not a change to his contract. As our Ravens and Bengals friends will gladly point out they do this all the time.

Hardly breaking tradition or giving into a players demands.

No – next year his contract will be torn up, and he will
sign a new, long term deal. Watch.

  9. 2 million moved from next year and taxed as a bonus at about 60% – yeah that’s a good deal for you AB

The best 5 WRs in the league are
    RG3, RG3,RG3,RG3,RG3

I am sure he can throw and he can catch the ball himself. Problem is he doesn’t know whether he is QB

  11. The Stillers made an excellent call when they opted for AB over Wallace. I’m surprised Wallace hasn’t been cut yet and slunked back to the Steelers.

Stickybuns is good, but he’s no Trick Montleban.

  13. Breaking from tradition, lol… I keep seeing this over and over! I’m a Steeler fan, just not a Steeler fan, fan… Get it? I dislike Pittsburghers. You know the issue with Pittsburgh fans? They are exactly that, Pittsburgh fans… They aren’t fans of “sports”, they stick in their bubble. But that bubble doesn’t include steroid abuse, woman beating, nor taking advantage of females when drunk.

  14. All the steelers haters wish Brown was on their team, and that their team had 6 trophies too. Sorry, I feel bad that your only outlet for frustration is to troll with unrelated hater talk.

  15. I am a hated Ravens fan and I can’t think of a player in the NFL who deserves it more than Brown. Guy is a thorn in our side and well a thorn in the side of every NFL team that the Steelers play. I hate the Steelers, I hate Ben, I hate Brown but I respect their accomplishments on the field. (let me point out that the Ravens have beaten the Steelers 6 of the last 9 games they have played. Had to say something that wasn’t nice about the Steelers)

Your jealousy is acknowledged as everyone knows Ozzie can’t draft a receiver to save his life. Brown will torch the criminals again this year….can’t wait.

  17. Other receivers in his same talent-range are signing new deals at 14 mil/yr, twice what he is getting. And it looks like all they are doing is giving him 2 mil of his money a year earlier. I’m usually not in favor of a hold-out but that is a lot of money to miss out on right in your prime.

    1. Impossible to say with any sort of accuracy, since there is no realistic projection for the salary cap yet.

    2. As it stands right now, you’re in the bottom five in salary cap space. Whether or not the cap increases by a lot or a little, you’ll still likely be in the bottom five in cap space. So $13M might sound like a ton (given that you never have any), but when a lot of your direct competition has $30-$40M, you’re nowhere near good shape bud.

And given the way that defense is shaping up, you might be an average football team with well below average cap space.

    Bye.

  19. And given the way that defense is shaping up, you might be an average football team with well below average cap space.

    Bye.

And given the way your offense is shaping up you can put in a high school team and stop Toss it Up and Pray Joe. I think Raven fans pay way too time worrying about the Steelers and not enough on their criminals. Every year trolls like you point to a cap problem that never happens just like an honest comment from Coach Whiny Pants Harbaugh.

LMAO your comments are so hilarious and delusional. I know your a skins fan and u got to believe in your team but come on lol. Last week you posted RG3 was going to be MVP and Redskins were going 13-3.

U serious bro? If so your in for a very disappointing season. Skins will be fighting for 4th place with the G-Men.

I think this is exactly what Kam Chancellor is after in Seattle.

  22. He’s due to make 6.25M in 2016. It’s either ball out and holdout , or ball out and get a long term extension. If he doesnt ball out, he takes his 6.25m in 2016 and tries again. He is essentially betting on himself for 2015. Hopefully for him , he doesn’t get hurt, that would sapp the guaranteed money hr would most def get.

That should be almost enough to afford your draft class next year. Hope nobody wants a raise.

I am glad PFT confirmed he was happy with a 2 million dollar bonus. Ha

  25. Steelers defense looks ready for the regular season. Besides the fact that they have no CB’s, Jarvis Jonss still sucks and Shamarko Thomas is a concussion waiting to happen. Yep, all is well

  26. This is the first time I’ve ever seen a player rewarded for pooping the bed during a crucial home playoff game. Dangerous precedent. Now Big Ben will want a bonus for every interception he throws in the end zone. LOL.

  27. Dumb dumb had to pay for that Rolls. Too bad he didn’t realize he really wasn’t getting more money.

For the umpteenth time, it was not his Rolls. It was a promotional car that was loaned to him. Even if it was, so what? Jealous much? Brown has been a stand up guy both on and off the field despite the media’s attempt to make him selfish through speculative articles. Maybe you should have a better understanding of situations before you start lobbing insults at people you don’t know.
