Patriots cut Jonas Gray

Bill Belichick has long believed that running backs are easily replaceable. And so he’s going to replace the running back who was widely expected to start Thursday night’s opener.

The Patriots have cut running back Jonas Gray, according to Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal.

That’s a surprise, but maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise any time Belichick makes any move at the running back position. Gray had a huge game against the Colts last year, rushing 37 times for 201 yards and four touchdowns, but Belichick benched him the next week when he was late to practice and largely phased him out of the offense after that.

Starting with Week Two, LeGarrette Blount is expected to start at running back for the Patriots. Blount is suspended for Week One, so the Patriots will go with a running back by committee approach. At the moment, the rest of the running backs on the roster are Brandon Bolden, James White, Travaris Cadet and Dion Lewis.

  1. I’d sure like to know the real reason Gray was cut. I suspect he rubbed Belichick the wrong way more than once because he seemed like a pretty talented player. Sure was fun to watch in that game against the Colts.

  2. There has to be something going on with him to not make the team. He looked great when he played last year. Weird.

  3. Wow! Figured he would thrown another 200+ yards up against the Colts in game 5. Oh well, some other guy will get do it instead.

  4. Belichick knows something we don’t and probably we will all soon know why. Wouldn’t surprise me if he already has another back ready to sign or Travaris Cadet is not going to be cut.

  5. yeah… he had one good game against a team that couldn’t stop the run. They couldn’t stop the run the previous year when Blount had a breakout game. And Blount really isn’t all that awesome either. I mean… really… he was a distant second to Le’Veon Bell in that other organization

  6. Maybe he didn’t know how to use the headphones properly. His offensive line didn’t hold enough for him when he was in practice and he couldn’t catch the cheating signals in time.

  7. Too bad for Jonas, he was fun to watch. But good news for another Pats RB, without Gray somebody else gets to run for 250 yards against the Colts next month.

  8. Everything about their use of him has been bizarre. He ran for 200 YARDS in one game and then barely saw the field after that? Don’t tell me about him oversleeping one time; you don’t bench a 200-yard rusher for the season, and then cut him the next year, because he was late one time. Then he outsprinted a cornerback for a 55-yard touchdown in the preseason. What’s he gotta do to earn a spot?

He’s certainly said all the right things. And of course, nobody on the team will give us any hint of what they didn’t like about him. Sometimes it’s just infuriating to be a Pats fan.

  9. Not happy about that. Kid can ball. Browns should be all over this. Bill just did not like this kid period.

Dude… Get over it. It’s been many years since your girls got slapped around by the Bruins in the Cup Finals.

Man that was fun to watch. I knew that series was over when Marchand decided to use Daniel Sedin’s head as a speedbag and no one on the ‘Nucks did a thing to stop him.

  12. .
It’s saying something that the Patriots couldn’t even get a conditional seventh in 2018 for him.
    .

  13. Love the haters who read a Pat article about a player cut and somehow we get cheater comments. The Patriots have really gotten into their heads. Love to see their tormented souls.

  14. Can’t wait to see the 4th super bowl banner go up Thursday with TB12 the GOAT, standing next to Bill ,one of the greatest coaches of all time!
    Go Pats!

  15. Either you have what it takes…in talent AND attitude… to be one of US.

    Or you don’t.

    It’s that simple.

Unfortunately in this case…it was the latter.

  16. Weird. Gray seemed like a well spoken, clean-cut young man and Blount looks more like a dirtball. The appearances must be deceiving. Wonder what the inside scoop is on this.

    .

It shows the Pats and other teams weren’t as high on him as a lot of us were.

His attitude has a lot to do with it I’m sure.

  18. I am a bit shocked that Cadet is making the team and Gray isn’t. Brees got hammered last year because Cadet had serious blitz pick-up issues; I wasn’t under the impression Gray had the same problem.

    Well, in Bill we trust.

  19. C’mom haters… Cheat, cheater, cheating. Is that all you got? It’s getting so old that it’s now downright lame.

How about a real repartee, hmm?

Patriots fans… Just ignore these losers. Don’t fight wit with them. They are unarmed.

  20. Projected to be week one starter and gets cut? This solidifies my notion to never draft a pats RB in fantasy.

  21. BB’s genius is in building championship TEAMS not in grooming individual superstars.
Probably the biggest competitive advantage the Pats have over teams like the Colts and Broncos in particular and rhe rest of the entire league in general with Carol (an ex-Pat) being the closest second.
Love it when people comment “well Gray said all the right things”, hey in.Bill’s world EVERYONE says “all the right things”.
Obviously Gray DID NOT have “it” when it comes to teamwork. My personal theory is that Gray got all big headed after the big game he had against the Colts, even a hint of Premodonnaism ain’t gonna cut it with BB.

And oh, btw all the whiney haters out there who are stuck on cheat, well….yawwwwwn….

Bill was obviously afraid that one day Jonas would rat out the Patriots cheating philosophy.

Yea, that’s it for sure. Just like all those former players and coaches who have left since the year 2000 have had a lot to say.
