Veteran receiver Reggie Wayne had a short stay in New England. As one source with knowledge of the team’s approach to veteran players explained it, the team has a habit of bringing in an older player long enough for him to get familiar with the other players, the coaches, and the system, in the event that the Patriots need him later.
If that was the objective with Wayne, he may not want to come back if the Patriots need him later. Scott Zolak, who works on the team’s radio broadcasts and played for the Patriots, reports that Wayne asked to be released because the “work environment was tough,” and because the situation was “not fun.”
Even if football is supposed to be fun, it doesn’t take a genius to know that football, fun, and Bill Belichick don’t really go along. And if Wayne doesn’t find anything else, he’ll have ask to himself whether he prefers having no fun not playing football to having no fun playing football.
