Steelers get to 52, sign a 53rd

Like all teams, the Steelers were required to get to 53 players by 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday. They got to 52, then added a 53rd.

The team has announced the release of running backs Jawon Chisholm and Josh Harris, defensive linemen Matt Conrath, Ethan Hemer, and Mike Thornton, safeties Jordan Dangerfield, Alden Darby, and Gerod Holliman, offensive linemen Reese Dismukes, B.J. Finney, and Doug Legursky, cornerbacks Kevin Fogg and B.W. Webb, linebackers L.J. Fort, Shayon Green, and Howard Jones, and wide receivers Shakim Phillips and Jarrod West.

Legursky, who spent 2009 through 2012 with the Steelers and played for the Bills in 2013 and the Chargers last year, was signed after center Maurkice Pouncey suffered a broken ankle in a preseason game. Legursky started Super Bowl XLV, when Pouncey couldn’t play due to a sprained ankle.

The Steelers also waived offensive linemen Kevin Palmer and Mitchell Van Dyk with the “injured” designation. If they clear waivers, they’ll be placed on the team’s injured reserve list.

The Steelers filled the 53rd roster spot by signing cornerback Ross Cockrell, a fourth-round pick of the Bills in 2014 who appeared in seven games. He was signed to a one-year deal.

  1. The veterans will be picked up as soon as their money isnt guaranteed… and i REALLY hope Pitt picks Holliman and Jones back up for practice squad… i love some Howard Jones… just cant get him on the field with all the depth!

  2. Having watched a lot of SEC ball, I kinda wondered if Dismukes was going to cut it at the next level. Maybe he’ll catch on somewhere else but the dream could be over for him.

As for Legursky, he might not be good enough to make the Steelers but I saw at least two or three teams this offseason where he could start from Day One and be an upgrade. There are a lot, and I mean a LOT of really bad O-Linemen stealing paychecks out there right now.

  3. I pity the Steelers. A depleted roster missing so many impact players…heading into Foxborough to play a QB/team with the biggest chip on their shoulders. This will be ugly….this will be a rout of epic proportions.
The Steelers will need to treat their game #2 as the real start of their season. If I was coaching the Steelers, I would let their scrubs take the field vs NE ….preserve their stars from the beat down that will occur vs NE.

It doesn’t help the Steelers cause that backroom weasel, Dan Rooney, has been a outspoken driving force behind Goodellbot’s lynching of Tom Brady.

Rooney talked tough when the deck was stacked in his favor with the bogus Wells Report and sham appeal process. . Unfortunately for Dan, Judge Berman slapped him and his little cartel of crybabies down.

Now, the Steelers and their untested defense will be facing a Tom Brady energized by his first opportunity to seek revenge against those who willfully and maliciously tried to destroy his reputation, livelihood and even marriage. Good luck with that.
    I’m giving the points.

  5. Hopefully they can find a good CB on the market and shore up that horrible secondary. Life long steelers fan but this year has the making to be a nightmare. an offense that can score 40+ a game and a defense that allows 50+ a game. I know the defense is young but these guys need to get up to speed quickly!

  6. The Steelers now have a 51-man roster and some guy with “Archer” on his jersey standing around on game day.

  7. What is the real problem in the team..the defense is a parody you don’t need to be a great critic to saw the team don’t have a defense and secundary is a joke.. Now tomlin have all his friends in couch’s table and erase all rest of players and couch’s cowher staff..I cant understand why take vick in second back position..is his friend too?.. the third Qb is a secure to lost any game. My prediction this season ..a bump road worst the previous Lebau era.

  8. @cmiich2006-I really hope you are wrong there don’t need/want him at all
@bassplucker- legursky is one of those guys stealing paychecks my man, he gets credit for his experience but he should have never been there to get that experience from day one on this team he was in over his head and looked abysmal.

Wow I know you fan boys get a little dramatic sometimes, but “tried to destroy his marriage?” Seriously? Wow.

Actually, justice would be a good hard snot-bubbling Harrison hit delivered to Golden Boy Brady, to do the job the judge wouldn’t. Trust me, a lot more people want to see that than anything directed at Rooney.

But hey, if you have to live in that manufactured chip on my shoulder world, have at it.

  10. redrew must not know the rules of the game. when the patriots score and we know they probably will…that’s the end of the offense….that’s it. they get off the field and the defense takes over. and lets not pretend like the patriots have top tier defense. remember they have to check Antonio brown who for the past couple of years has been uncheckable. also bell is out. indeed. not the first time. Deangelo should prove to be worthy. Sammy coates should prove worthy as well.

bettis3636 is hilarious. I don’t understand the landry jones thing either. I mean if they were that concerned about injuries why not just allow 75 players. that way if your qb gets injured and your 3rd string gets injured before the starting qb and 2nd string qb comes back……like when does that ever happen?

as for our secondary. idk….I wish I was a manager. I was the main one who felt we should have signed darelle revis. give him whatever he wants. let him shut down one side of the field. and then it would be be him and gay. sign a good safety and be done. now we have guys who need over the top help. and it appears those over the top help(Mitchell and Thomas) need over the top help. this year as a steelers fan. I will just watch and see. if we win…great. if we go 8-8 well…that’s pretty good for it to be a losing year. most teams losing years are 3-13. as far as defense, i understand the nfl is different but speed doesn’t matter when the blocker is in your pads. i will see what shazier and Dupree have to offer. I’m also interested in seeing what golson has to offer when he gets back. i was really for the steelers picking nate orchard and ekpre ifo so this is like a fast forward season in my eyes.

HOWEVER. considering the last 2 seasons and many seasons in the past where we lost to the bengals Oakland and Houston. we seem to beat the good teams and lose somehow to the horrific teams. so since this year we have a tough schedule. lets see if that theory still applies.

  11. Not just that, but I’m pretty sure the Steelers were the only ones who voted against the current CBA all of you Pats fans have been whining about.
