Vikings pare roster to 53 players

The Vikings got around to announcing their roster moves a couple of hours after the deadline to make them on Saturday, which meant there was plenty of time for the biggest name to leak out ahead of time.

Or the biggest player, anyway. That would be Polish import Babatunde Aiyegbusi, who announced his own departure on Facebook well ahead of the Vikings’ decision to do the same thing.

The Vikings also parted ways with defensive tackle Chigbo Anunoby, defensive end B.J. DuBose, guard Isame Faciane, center Tom Farniok, wide receiver Donte Foster, wide receiver Isaac Fruechte, safety Anthony Harris, running back DuJuan Harris, defensive tackle Greg Hickman, defensive end Leon Mackey, linebacker Michael Mauti, linebacker Brian Peters, cornerback Shaun Prater, fullback Blake Renaud, cornerback Josh Thomas, tackle Tyrus Thompson, center Bob Vardaro, linebacker Brandon Watts (pictured), wide receiver Ryan Whalen, running back Dominique Williams and offensive lineman David Yankey.

Thompson, Watts, Yankey, Mauti and DuBose were all drafted by the team with Thompson and DuBose coming in this year’s draft.

The Vikings also made a trade with the Chargers for offensive lineman Jeremiah Sirles and placed cornerback Jabari Price on the reserve/suspended list Saturday.

  1. Wow they let go of David Yankey I thought they would keep him around to develop him a little more. I remember all the buzz about him last year. Can’t remember if he was high or lower 3rd rounder

  2. They may miss Mauti on special teams. Tough to lose some guys who contributed last year, but then again it’s not like the Vikes are dumping former 3rd and 4th rounders picked by their “genius” GM like some other NFCN teams we know.

A sad day. When you’re cut from the Vikes you know your career is over.

Well, there’s always the Packers but why put yourself through that nonsense?

  4. Packers are bummed we didn’t let Taylor Heinicke go.
With One Hit Rodgers getting long in the tooth,
    They are shaky at QB.
The had a major strike out with his supposed replacement. HA!

Shouldn’t be unemployed long. I hear they’re hiring stadium roofers.
    …………..
That’s a good one. I get it. Because that construction worker died, right? Next, I reckon you’ll write some jokes about cops getting shot at. You’re a funny guy…….I mean packtard.

What a prick thing to say

  8. It would make reading this so much easier to group the guys of the same position together instead of listing the position every time. I bet it would even make writing it easier, too!

Teddy B posted a stellar 111.3 passer rating this pre-season. 2nd year in the system, playing with 1’s and 2’s against 1’s and 2’s. Good showing – really. 1TD no INT, 295 yards.

Brett Hundley posted a 129.6 passer rating this pre-season. First year in the system, 5th round pick playing with 1’s and 2’s against 1’s and 2’s. Better showing – really. 7TDs, 1 INT, 630 yards.

So I wouldn’t exactly go crowing about how bad GB’s back up situation is – considering their #3 is a 5th round pick that’s outperformed Teddy in all respects.

  10. Yankey wasn’t a 3rd round pick! He was like a 5th or 6th round flier and he turned out to be a total wimp. Not meant for the game of football, but played at Stanford like that tackle Martin did. They keep certain linemen around to raise the team GPA and use their big bodies as stop gaps.

  11. I remember last February that David Yankey was being considered a 1-2nd rounder. Haven’t watched him play since college (Stanford), but I’m still surprised.

Ha ha ha. You think he played against #1 defenses. Ok. Sure. You’re right. GB will be fine when Rodgers goes down. Except….absolutely nobody actually believes that. 4-12 tops without AR.

  13. So I wouldn’t exactly go crowing about how bad GB’s back up situation is – considering their #3 is a 5th round pick that’s outperformed Teddy in all respects…

The problem is, The Green Bay Rodger offense will have to score 40 points to overcome that defense and special teams

That must be a new alias for Tokyofilthidiot. He’ s the guy who made bridge jokes about Minneapolis after the bridge collapsed and people died. Ignore him, hopefully he’ll just go away. He finds humor in others’ pain. He’s a true football fan, just ask him.

  15. Wait, over in the Packers thread, they were saying that Thompson cutting any person who he drafted was a clear sign of failure for the Packers?

5 Vikings draft picks cut here… TWO from this year??? Well, I guess the silver lining for the Vikings is that they’ll definitely make the practice squad. No one’s going to want them if the Purple Stink was too good for them.

  16. Aside from punt returner…which Stephon Diggs can excel at….Marcus Sherels brings nothing to this team. Micheal Mauti was the teams leading special teams player on every unit. Can not believe we got rid of the most emotional leader on this team!!! Bad move!

  17. Oh no you didn’t! You just cursed us for life in that stadium. Don’t you know that bad things happen to bad people, even when they think they have better football?

  18. I’m not even going to read the comments on this one. Lemme guess:

    “All could start for _______”

Poor Vikings fans. Overrun with preseason myopia.

Or trolls. I’m thinking trolls. TROLLS! I tell you.

  19. Another ex Packer in the cuts, (Harris RB), which followed the release of ex Packer Bostick so at least their personnel department is starting that it takes more than playing for the Packers to make it in the NFL. Its possible that the Vikings will finish higher than the Bears two years in a row.

  20. the arrogant packers are the only nfl franchise with ‘owners’ that make fun of the death of innocent Americans on the job. you’re a disgrace to the game of football and humanity in general.

  21. As a realistic Vikings fan I believe we finish the season 6-10 or 7-9 with plenty of upside but not enough experience to win the games deep in the fourth quarter. Two reasons that stick out are that the Vikings had an easy schedule with the NFC South having anyone in that division finishing above .500. We barely beat Washington and New York had to go into overtime. Second reason is that we finished 1-5 in our division. I know those game were really close and one wasn’t (@GB.) We want to see the playoffs we have to be at least 4-2 in the division in which i don’t see that happening especially in and at home against Greenbay and winning in Solider field. Also, with a tougher schedule this season another problem is that our offensive line is in shambles with the whole right side with rookies or non-starters.

We will be a better team as the defense gels and the line gets better or upgraded and Teddy still blossoming into an elite quarterback but no playoffs or a winning record this season.

  22. Being cut by the Vikings is a two edged sword.

On one hand, you are now free to sign with real NFL team.

On the other hand, what does it say about your talent level if you can’t even make it on the Vikings?

  23. IT’s a good sign when starting ex-packers aren’t good enough to make our roster. Whether based on skill or principal, I applaud the movement to expelling sconnies from the state at all levels.
