Stanley Jean-Baptiste goes unclaimed

There were 32 players drafted in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft and only one of them failed to remain with the team that drafted them through Saturday’s cut to 53 players.

Cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste was the unlucky fellow who failed to make the Saints despite getting picked No. 58 overall following his career at the University of Nebraska. Most pundits thought at the time that Jean-Baptiste came off the board too early, an opinion strengthened by his quick departure from New Orleans.

That feeling should be even stronger now that the other 31 NFL teams decided that Jean-Baptiste wasn’t worth a waiver claim after the Saints waived him on Saturday. It probably goes without saying that getting passed over in a league that’s always looking for cornerbacks is not a great sign for Jean-Baptiste’s NFL future, but we’ll say it anyway.

Jean-Baptiste is now free to sign with any NFL team on either their active roster or on the practice squad. Given the lack of interest on waivers, the latter is probably going to be his destination in the short term.

UPDATE 1:48 p.m. ET: Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports, via agent Sunny Shah, that Jean-Baptiste will join the Lions practice squad.
