NFL Referees Association condemns attack on high school official

The NFL Referees Association has no jurisdiction over high school football. But the recent attack on a high school official was sufficiently stunning to get the group’s attention.

“These types of actions against any game official at any level are inexcusable,” NFLRA Executive Director Jim Quirk said in a press release. “We fully support the suspensions of the players involved, along with a full and complete investigation by the Texas University Interscholastic League. . . .

“I’ve never seen anything like this in all my years of officiating at the high school, collegiate or professional level.”

Charges could be filed against the two players who blindsided the official during garbage time of a Friday night game. The bigger question remains whether either player acted with the knowledge or at the direction of any coaches.
