Goodell: No connection between Spygate and Deflategate

AP

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell denies that he cracked down on the Patriots over Deflategate in part because he faced criticism within the league for going too easy on New England in Spygate.

Moments before Goodell appeared this morning on ESPN’s Mike & Mike, ESPN dropped a major report about Spygate. That report suggested that the Patriots’ cheating in Spygate was more widespread than previously known, and that Goodell hastily ended the Spygate investigation before it could damage the league’s credibility. One unnamed owner is quoted in that ESPN report as calling Goodell’s Deflategate punishment “a makeup call.”

But Goodell says that’s not the case. Asked by ESPN’s Mike Greenberg whether the league went harder on the Patriots in Deflategate because of the previous cheating in Spygate, Goodell said that’s not the case.

“I have not seen this report, Mike, in any way, but I can just tell you I’m not aware of any connection between the Spygate procedures and the procedures we went through here. We obviously learn from every time we go through any kind of a process, try to improve it, get better at it, but there’s no connection in my mind to the two incidents,” Goodell said.

Although Goodell denies there was a “makeup call” element to the Deflategate punishment, the league has already said the Patriots were treated as repeat offenders in Deflategate because of Spygate. So there’s a very real connection between Spygate and Deflategate, in that they’re both part of a widespread perception around the NFL that the Patriots are cheaters.

  1. The pack of liars are beginning to disintegrate! Now they can’ even keep their pathetic stories on the same page. When is this clown show going to be disbanded?

  2. Fxosports1 this is the perfect time to take down ESPN in case your aren’t paying attention…

  3. Why werent the Jets ever treated as “repeat” offenders after the taping other teams, Alosi scandal, tampering with players and tampering with game balls?

  4. So let’s get this straight; ESPN is HUMILIATED after their reports on deflategate (which were supplied by league sources) were shown to be almost entirely false. Brady gets cleared, ESPN looks like fools, and THEN only AFTER this, they put out a report about Spygate?? Give it up already. The NFL used you as an outlet for their ‘state-run media’ in essence, and you’re just mad that they fed you a batch of lies. Taping signals wasn’t even illegal until after the 2006 season. You could be out there with a camera and boom mic for all it mattered.

  5. Videotaping rule was not in place in 2001, 2003, or 2004. In fact, the first mention of this rule was in the 2007 NFL Game Day Operations Manual.

Give it up – there is only one “spygate” game and that is was week 1 of the 2007 season against the Jets.

The Pats admitted wrongdoing, paid the fine, lost the picks and moved on.

    Period. End of story.

  6. This shipwreck of a franchise is the worst in all professional sports. They should do things the “Right way” also known as the “Raider Way”. Being from a city of champions like Oakland, the Patriots and Boston should take notes on how to win and do it the Right way instead of cheating and scandals. It’s a shame the team is filtered with despicable people like the low life owner dating 20 year old women, the HC consistently cheating and never having an explanation, and the star QB cheating in the game and on his wife. Consistently signing players of questionable character like Aaron Hernandez, Donte Stallworth, Corey Dillon and so on. This team needs to sign Tim Tebow to get things right so he could preach to these misguided souls and there trainwreck franchise.

  7. So funny to watch all the dislikes and comments by these loser Patriots fans trying to defend these cheaters. Sorry Pats and Pats fans, the rest of the NFL will NOT put a blind eye to your cheating ways and philosphys. Asterick!!!

  8. Let me get this straight.

ESPN releases a hatchet job of an article days after the NFL is publicly shamed, and does so an hour before the commissioner goes on the air—and most of you clowns buy into this mess?

I hate the Patriots as much as the next guy, but come on. This is as bad as it gets.

If you want to be a fool, go right ahead and believe the NFL? Um, OK, sure….

  10. The rule was in place since 2006, Jets were caught taping from that spot in Foxborough in 2006. Why were they not subjected to the same penalties as the Patriots were in 2007? Couldn’t have anything to do with Goodell and Kensi being former Jets could it? Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

  11. In 2006, the Miami Dolphins paid money for a tape that had pulled the audio of all of the Patriots’ offensive line calls. They were able to beat the Pats 21-0. The league response as well as the Patriots response. “Hey that’s football” Be better.

  12. Yes it does, check out why Senator Arlen Spector was so angry about Goodell destroying the SpyGate Tapes. and then decide if an angry Senator might have the power to cause great concern in the NFL. Keep in mind Senator Spector warned Roger Goodell that the League could lose it’s anti-trust exemption over destroying the tapes. Read it all and then decide.

Of course a politician from a state that had two other NFL teams wasn’t pandering to his constituents – give me a break – the only group worse than the current ESPN/NFL dweebs is politicians!

  14. Looks like the NFL and ESPN had that article ready to go the moment they lost deflategate. It’s a shame. Goodell just happened to be doing a spot on ESPN? Implicated himself slightly to try and make it look good but really nailed the Patriots with tons of information that has not be substantiated with no named sources. It’s sad.

  15. Why is it that fans are NOT allowed to tie Mike Vick to dog killing because he “paid his debt to society”….BUT….the Pats always have to pay for “spygate”? The Pats paid their penalties levied by the NFL, WHY does the media ALWAYS label the Pats cheaters if they did EXACTLY what Vick did….they paid their debt for what they did wrong.

Teams and players MUST be treated the same….after all ESPN/NBC/PFT are always lecturing the world about “fairness” and equality”. It’s about time that they practice this same “fairness” and equality”.

  16. It’s only Pats fans who think they have a dynasty. Belicheat hires 3 men to come up with ways to cheat so they cheat 100 ways every week to beat the 2 win Jags and brag. The players don’t have a choice. They’re all tarnished. You guys keep forgetting what you’re not getting caught at. Belicheat needed to cheat because he had the worst QB and roster ever.

I celebrate real successful franchises. Not fake ones. I don’t hate untarnished real winners.

    Packers 13
    Bears 9
    Giants 8
    Steelers 6
    Niners 5
    Cowboys 5
    There’s a bunch with 4, 3, 2, and 1 without cheating.

**** puts the Pats at -4. That’s what the Pats fans call the greatest dynasty ever when every other NFL team has a classier tesm to root for. They won 0 without the greatest cheating coach in NFL history.

  17. Oh, please.

ESPN is just the NFL’s Pravda. There’s no way they sent that out without the NFL’s ok.

Lol. Just more piling on to appease the hater crowd and try and win the PR battle while the Patriots win the legal one.

    Goodell: can’t handle the truth.

  18. This Patriots stuff changed my perspective on Roger Goodell. Previously, I couldnt stand him, and wanted a new commish, buts the picture has gotten clearer. He only does what the owners ask him to do, and the owners wanted to slam the Pats for cheating AGAIN! He got the wells report to support what his bosses (or at least 31 out of 32 bosses) wanted. Dude was just doing his job.

Another element here is the fact that he let them off before. It’s like if your a manager, and your best employee does something that he shouldnt, perhaps even a fireable offense. Because he is the best employee and you like him, you give him the ‘ol, “I’m gonna let it go this time, but I’m trusting you not to do it again”…only to find out that he never stopped doing it and now has made you look like an idiot for not firing him in the first place. Brady and the Pats asked for it, and were mad when they got it.

    Patriots***

  19. The timing of the release of the ESPN piece and Goodell’s appearance a coincidence, I think not.

The league and ESPN are doing everything in their power to disrupt the Patriots organization it is a disgrace and the only way to end this lies firmly in the hands of the New England Patriots and their lawyers. So far Robert Kraft wants to stay in the Club of owners and not upset them, it seems to me they don’t really care Mr Kraft its time for you to change your ideals and bring the legal hammer down on this fiasco!

  20. Hahahahaha.
    I knew it.
Fraud since 2000. (that’s pat fans que to lose it at 1, 2,….)

Wonder how many thumb downs I’ll get. (pat fans)

  21. Troy Vincent seems to disagree with Goodell. In his letter to the Patriots on the penalties he writes

“Here, there are several factors that merit strong consideration in assessing discipline. The first is the club’s prior record. In 2007 the club and several individuals were sanctioned for videotaping signals of opposing defensive coaches in violation of the Constitution and Bylaws. Under the Integrity of the Game Policy, this prior violation of competitive rules was properly considered in determining the discipline in this case.”

Does Roger even know about this Internet thing?

  22. Is the “make-up call” owner admitting that the NFL went after a player instead of an owner and a team? I would love to see him testify at Brady’s defamation trial.

The NFL owners are now calling themselves out as blackballing players for the misdeeds of owners and coaches if I am reading these accusations correctly.

  23. “We obviously learn from every time we go through any kind of a process”

Based on the league’s record in cases that have gone to court, no, you DO NOT learn.

  24. “I have not seen this report, Mike, in any way,…”

And he is just now looking at the Ray Rice video.

It isn’t that Goodell is a pathological liar so much as he actually thinks people believe him.

  25. So Goodell claiming there is no connection after when he handed out punishment of Deflategate he said one of the reasons for the big fine and loss of draft picks was for past misdemeanors?

Sure we believe you Roger, you continue to lie and make things up as you go along!

  26. and yet the blind jealous envious haters can’t see through this

don’t know who is more pathetic, the NFL front office, ESPN or these blind sheep haters…..

  27. It is readily apparent at this point that when a toilet flushes at 345 Park Ave the dinner bell rings at bspn

  28. MINUTES AFTER THE ESPN OTL REPORT GOODELL APPEARS ON MIKE AND MIKE!!!!
    Coincident????
This clearly shows the carefully crafted PR campaign to save Goodell’s rep
This continues to be a smear campaign orchestrated by the league office made up of ex execs from teams the Pats have taken a part when they were coaching those teams

Cant beat them on the field—get a league job and continue the fight

  29. Either this guy is an incredible liar or he’s not in control of the NFL office. Today we have near identical reports from ESPN and SI covering the video scandal from 8 years ago with the same leaked sources. And over the weekend the NFL Twitter account posted a graphic promoting SB50 with 8 top QB’s, none of whom are named Brady.

my milk came out my nose from laughing so hard!

Raider Way? Somebody call an ambulance, just threw out my back ROTFLMAO

Yeah, Oakland, the Garden spot of the NFL.

  31. So let me get this straight, how did the Patriots ever lose? Knowing every play of every team, fixed footballs, tapped phones, vulcan mind melds, weather machines, giants fans, super magnets and laser beams, all this and they still lost games, playoff games? How did they manage to lose to the Giants with one of the best teams ever to play?

Only now can the truth be told.

They decided, in a secret meeting with Roger Goodell that in order to keep it looking somewhat fair they would toss a few games. They could have beaten the Colts but Kevin Faulk let himself get tackled 2 yards short on 4th & 2. Rodney totally could have knocked the ball away but in fact he provided the Gorilla Glue Tyree used on his helmet. Brady clearly threw interception against the Broncos on purpose and took not one but two grounding calls against the Giants, just to keep up appearances.

    Mystery solved.

  32. Ever notice that now and again a color commentator will point out a certain player, then you see an isolation shot of that very player, then he makes a significant play. Happens every game. Just at a critical point in the game. How do you suppose that happens?

i really hope the FBI comes into 345 park ave and starts collecting files, this is truly criminal conspiracy they are undertaking.
    ——–
Agreed, and while they’re at it, let’s see if Arlan Specter had a big savings account withdrawal right after the Pats beat the Eagles. Bookies don’t care if you’re a Senator. How much did Arlan lose betting on that game?

Haternation is giggling now but if/when the FBI digs in it won’t be so funny.

  34. Its obvious that Patriots are held to a higher standard, because when they win its because they cheated and when they lose its because they actually arent good. I wonder how different the NFL would be if Mangini didnt rat out New England because of his own coaching ineffectiveness.

  35. I want to thank the entire Patriots organization, specifically Kraft and his band of fools for turning the game that I love into a complete circus. You’ve managed to ruin the entire offseason and are now spilling into the regular season with this BS! Please tell me why, WHY can’t you and your team just put your damn hand on the ground and play straight up football. Why do you feel you have to cheat?

  36. Goodell is a liar.

    AND

    The patriots are lying, cheaters.

Why is it so that so hard to understand for some? NFL owners and their henchman Goodell will do any thing to keep the impact (competitive advantages) of the patriots cheating from coming to light. They’ll change rules after the fact, but they love their money more than love fairly contested games.

  37. From Troy Vincents letter…

I guess when you tell that many lies its difficult to keep them straight.
