Report: Most teams take extra precautions to combat Patriots’ spying

Getty Images

When it rains, it pours.

The Patriots are finding that out the hard way this morning, as for the second time a major investigative piece has accused the team of widespread cheating. First there was ESPN’s investigation revisiting Spygate. And now comes a Sports Illustrated report that also says there’s a perception in the NFL that the Patriots routinely break the rules to gather information about the opposition.

According to the report, at least 19 NFL teams — most of the league — have confirmed that they took precautions against the Patriots that they didn’t take against any other opponent, because they were more concerned about spying when they faced the Patriots than they were when they faced any other opponent. Steps teams have taken against the Patriots include running fake plays during walk-through practices in case the Patriots were spying, not leaving anything sensitive in the trash at their hotels in New England, declining the Patriots’ offer to use their facilities, blocking off the visitors’ locker room at Gillette Stadium to keep Patriots employees out, sweeping for bugs, and telling the Patriots’ visiting locker room manager to leave because they didn’t trust him not to spy.

One team told Sports Illustrated that it butted heads with the Patriots over locking the doors to the visitors’ locker room, with the Patriots telling them they couldn’t because it’s a fire code violation, and the team telling the Patriots to go ahead and report them to the fire chief if they wanted, but that the visitors’ locker room doors would be locked. (Patriots spokesman Stacey James denies that ever happened.)

Both the ESPN report and the Sports Illustrated report suggest that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was determined to crack down on the Patriots for Deflategate in part because many teams think Goodell failed to come down hard enough on the Patriots for Spygate. Goodell denies that. But there’s no denying the perception around the league that the Patriots are cheaters.

  1. Huh, it’s almost as if football is a game, and the Patriots are much better at it than most.

  2. “..there’s no denying the perception around the league that the Patriots are cheaters.”

    ———————————————

    That’s because they are….old news.

  3. Tell us something we don’t know. I still remember Marvin Lewis’s comment “We felt like they were right in the huddle with us.”

  4. I love it. 19 teams are so paranoid of the Patriots mystique, that they actually run fake plays??? Really???? I would wager most of them are under .500….lol….this may be the funniest thing I’ve ever heard in my life.

First of all, by the time one gets to the NFL are there really any plays that are “new”? Cmon……different language, but the plays are the plays. It comes down to matchups.

19 teams are paranoid to the point they run fake plays in practice…to “confuse” the Patriots. Perhaps they should practice the plays they run, so as to not get blown out.

    Jeez….that is funny….lol………….

  5. I don’t see it as finding out the hard way. Anyone who has followed ESPN & the NFL’s leaks, misinformation )without corrections) this year had to expect they woulddivert the heat from themselves

  6. A movie (Concussion) that puts the NFL negative light is announced last December, here comes Deflategate.

A trailer is released for said movie (concussion) that will hit theaters this year, here comes an ESPN (NFL’s propaganda machine) with a new report on the heels of the NFL getting creamed in federal court.

The hordes of sheeple flock to the “new” reports out of ESPN like flies to honey, and happily slurp it up as gospel because they love them some Patriot bashing.

7 months of deflategate – and years of empty accusations – and ESPN has just sat on these details? Yeah, sure. News report comes out 20 minutes before Goodell is on ESPN’s M&M, and this isn’t timed? Uh, right. Sony themselves said internally that the NFL would go to great lengths to get the movie (Concussion) squashed, or not noticed by the sheeple.

The NFL is playing the sheeple like a drum, and the sheeple are letting them do it. Wake up and realize the enemy isn’t the Patriots, it’s the league offices.

    Don’t be a sheeple.

  7. This is hilarious.

Goodell is so upset that he lost the ruling that this is his response.

Of course the Patriots are not exempt either, biggest cheating organization in professional sports.

Someone investigate the no name cornerback who did the “great play out of no where” in this years superbowl…

  8. Lame for the League to leak these reports. Shameful by Goodell and co. But it’s what you’ve come to expect from the league that has lost nearly all credibility under his watch.

  9. Odd timing for all of this to come out against the Patriots. The league got hammered in court so it continues to leak information to try to destroy the patriots in the public opinion pols.
ESPN is now in the business of creating news rather than reporting it and they definitely are being influenced by some powerful folks who have an agenda against the Patriots.

  10. Of course they cheat and they hired a cheater back in Josh McDaniels. His getting caught cheating while the HC in Denver is the main reason he was fired. That and the fact he was a terrible HC.

  11. The Super Bowl last yr makes more sense now…everyone in the world knew the Seahawks would hand the ball off to Marshawn except, OC for Seattle, Pete Carol and Belicheck…the Pats were waiting for that play…trust me, the Pats are still cheating, they are just more sophisticated about it now than before….

  12. This is nothing new. Most teams are aware of their cheating, especially at home.

It’s no coincidence that the communications system for the visiting team goes out on a regular basis…even though the Patriots system is working just fine at the time. This rarely if ever happens in other stadiums, but it happens all the time to visitors at Gillette.

  13. Tee hee 🙂 I love hearing this stuff. The paranoia and fear just proves the Patriots are in their heads!

Doesn’t get much better than that. 🙂

  14. Why didnt the league punish the Jets when they were caught taping the Pats in Foxboro during the 2006 playoffs?

  15. I just read the article – it starts with the Seahawks being etra careful with their practices for SB prep and increasing security along an unprotected area. They didn’t uncover anything. It says the same for the other events as well – that teams took “extra” security measures but didn’t find anything when they did.

This reads more like a story about how the Patriots are in everyone’s heads than the Pats actually doing anything.

  16. Let Patriot homers tell it where there continues to be smoke there is never fire. Never mind Josh McDaniels was busted for cheating in Denver and fired, never mind Mangini blew the whistle, never mind any of this. Let them tell it we are all jealous of the Patriots success. Nobody does the Steelers this way and they have more Superbowl trophies.

  17. So teams use their practice time to run fake plays because they think BB is watching? That’s hilarious!

  18. So were these reports put together over the long weekend, or was the NFL’s head of smear campaigns prepared for this since the beginning?

The coordination behind this attack today is truly embarrassing. The NFL has to move on… the seasons starts in TWO DAYS.

  19. Brilliant strategy. Teams consume resources to combat their paranoia about the Patriots, whether real or not, takes away from game day preparation. Score one for the Patriots.

  20. This will get fun when the former patriot employees start coming out of the woodwork seeking $$$ signs for the story about “what they know”. Get your popcorn ready!

  21. So teams are running fake plays during walk throughs, the Pats are preparing for these fake plays and they are STILL winning? That seems odd.

  22. “to combat Patriots’ spying”? Inaccurate headline.

Try this: “to address their own paranoia over a perception that is not supported by any factual information.”

A team that’s confident in its players and coaches would have no need to be this paranoid. The Pats are so obviously in the heads of all their regular opponents, it’s pretty funny.

Meanwhile, the better teams in the league don’t complain and play quite well against the Pats. I’m expecting my Cowboys to give them a heck of a game this year, and hopefully a win over them.

    Without any whining.

  23. Are the folks at ESPN really this dumb? Do they not realize they are being used? Jeez… the dumbing down of America and especially media continues.

I feel guilty about my lack of attentiveness toward the bountygate BS that impacted the Saints.

I apologize to Saints fans. The league, this commissioner are not to be believed. The fans deserve better.

  24. Seahawks would hand the ball off to Marshawn except, OC for Seattle, Pete Carol and Belicheck…the Pats were waiting for that play…trust me, the Pats are still cheating, they are just more sophisticated about it now than before….

    ——————————-

I saw in a commercial how they said “they practiced for that play”. My ass they did.

  25. Again, coincidence these two articles came out today isn’t it? What a shameless exhibition by the NFL and these media outlets. Just admit it other owners and teams you can’t take the patriots success period. Of course you,the other teams, are all saints and do nothing wrong or against the rules! Halos abound over all the other coaches and players in the NFL inclusive of the commissioner.

  26. I admit…it’s hard for me to figure out which is worse: the fact that the Patriots are serial cheaters, or the fact that Goodell allowed and empowered them to remain serial cheaters.

    ====================

Still a heck of a play by Butler.

  28. As they should. The patriot cheat and cheat and nothing ever gets done about it. I would do what I could do as well when playing those bunch of liars and cheaters

  29. This is completely insane. With all of this paranoia and hunting for evidence of cheating, funny how so few teams have found anything. Did bugs ever turn up as the locker room was searched repeatedly? No? Wow those Pats are good. Has anyone ever caught the Pats spying on practices? No? Must be serious deep cover.

Teams don’t leave their playsheets lying around in New England? Really? Do they make a practice of leaving them around in other cities?

And if all of these countermeasures are in place, why do the Pats keep on winning?

I also can’t help but notice how few of these brave truth tellers from other teams dare to attach their names to these completely delusional rumors. That tells you everything you need to know.

  30. Ironic how these stories are rampant and accepted as truths yet no evidence to say they have has been gathered. No bugs found, and even the “deflategate” sting didn’t turn up anything but fabricated evidence.

Seems like paranoia and people not accepting their failures and pointing fingers instead. NFL is becoming TMZ. Can we just watch damn football.

  31. Just like Lance Armstrong, you can cheat and run, but you can’t hide.

Sooner or later, we will catch you Brady. Better be paying tons of cash and gags to NE employees. Once you retire and all is done, they will talk. They will show where the bones are buried…

You will NOT enter the Hall of Fame.

  32. One things for sure here. There are Pats fans, and then there are realist. Too much smoke to not have a fire

Seattle had 3 WRs and the Pats had 3DBs and were in Goaline, Heavy package.

If they knew why would they do that?

  34. I feel guilty about my lack of attentiveness toward the bountygate BS that impacted the Saints

    ^ This.

I know better know. Sorry Saints.

  35. I’ve defended the Pats forever, and that’s saying something as a Jets fan. But this is just too much. Their legacy, to me, is thoroughly tarnished. There is no coming back from this. You can’t compare Belly and Brady to Walsh and Montana. This is just wow.

And I’m a firm believer that this was leaked by NFL employees and owners to ESPN. ESPN doesn’t go the bathroom, if the NFL doesn’t want them to. It’s pretty clear that the NFL gave them permission to run this story, namely owners who are sick of GODdell, as well as the Pats, Kraft, Belly, and Brady. They want GODdell out and what’s-his-name who edited the “independent” report. Mission accomplished. I don’t see how GODdell comes back from this. His reputation is tarnished for good. I’m expecting a press conference sooner than later that he is stepping down.

  36. After the ruling, I think Goodell and ESPN had a niiiiiice sit down interview.

It’s amazing how much info “leaks” when stuff doesn’t go their way.

All these petulant children. Let’s play football, sheesh. While y’all are taking extra precautions for the Patriots…other teams are spying on you.

  37. Isn’t this really the biggest win? The Patriots are in other teams heads. Running fake plays and practicing somewhere else. Opponents changing their routine instead of practicing as usual.

  38. Goodell absolutely needs to be fired. Whether his intensions and good or not he’s simply incompetent. He is really demanding the NFL brand.

The NFL needs to find a Gerald Ford and end our national nightmare.

  39. THIS JUST IN:

No team attempts to hide it’s plans from any other opponent, EXCEPT The Patriots.

What a bunch of trash. Is it coincidence this garbage is being released in a stream early in the week, the day after a long weekend, leading up to a big opening night game? Is the NFL trying to sabotage opening night for the Patriots? I think they are….

    Sore losers…..

  40. Hillary Clinton agrees with her comrades that this is all just a vast right-wing conspiracy and insists that nothing inappropriate happened here.

    …..

This reads more like a story about how the Patriots are in everyone’s heads than the Pats actually doing anything.

    True, very true.

Soon we will be reading that the NSA has contracted with the Patriots to do their spying on Foreign dignitaries.

  42. Perception is reality. Pats were caught cheating red handed and will always be painted that way. How long until a Tim Donaghy type revelation from a Pats employee comes out?

  43. And the Patriots obviously cheated. If you gave a minor league baseball steroids they aren’t going to become Babe Ruth but if you give them to Barry Bonds…

The Raiders or Jaguars wouldn’t have won a SB doing these things but it obviously helped put really good New England teams over the top.

  44. This cuts two ways.

If the teams spend so much time using countermeasures against the Patriots why have they not found any “bugs”?

Why is the only proof of the Patriots “cheating” the fact that the Patriots “win”?

Why is the evidence all “touchy feely” and not factual?

People believe a lot of things but you with all the scrutiny you would think they would find something substantive, but they have’t. In fact, they wanted to believe the Patriots cheat so bad they ignored the facts and science in deflategate and just ran with their assumptions. And we all know what we do when we assume.

  45. If all these teams are taking all these precautions. How come no team has found any bugs in their sweeps?

If they had ESPN would have reported it. Not to mention 345 Park Avenue would be handing out Fines and taking away draft picks.

Payton standing in the hall to talk because of his fear of bugs.

No Bugs – but plenty of paranoia and getting into peoples head.

  46. As if the World Champs even want to be infected by the terrible plays cooked up by your sorry teams.

“Coach, the Jets have come up with a real doozy, their QB runs into his own lineman’s ass and drops the football. How can we ever defend against that?”
“My god, we must find a way.”

  47. Huh??? oh yeah, the patriots cheat when they can…i thought we knew this!?!? At this point i really think everyone is kinda over this except the media.

  48. Patriots are a stain on the NFL. I find their name offensive, as they act in a most unpatriotic manner.

Only one way to describe the SB win:

    *

  49. Actually, this is the first motive that I have heard about why the NFL was not impartial and wanted the “Independent” Ted Wells report to show that the Patriots cheated and why this became a full blown investigation instead of a slap on the wrist.

The Patriots are so good at cheating, that they never get caught red handed, so the NFL implemented the sting operation instead of giving them a warning. He figured the only way to stop them is to catch them and hammer them. Unfortunately, they botched the sting and subsequent investigation, so the Patriots still wiggled out of it and gave their fans and the judge reasonable doubt about the cheating.

  50. Not only has there been proof but Kraft admitted cheating by accepting fines and lost draft choices. It’s just that the penaltys were not severe enough to stop the cheating from continuing.

  51. Patriot fan in denial: This isn’t really a big deal. Knowing the other teams plays and exactly when they’re going to be called and the game plan is just being “smarter” than everybody else, lol.

  52. All u fools who want Goodell fired are idiots… jumping on the bandwagon. Roger is only doing his job. Enforcing the rules… whats the problem???

  53. Every thing they’ve accomplished in the BB Era is suspect. Pats fans can be as stubborn as they want while sticking their heads in the sand, but history will not be kind to this team.

Cheaters and liars. That’s how they’ll be remembered.

  54. So where is the link of proof that any of these 19 teams were actually spied on in a way that is outside NFL norms? This is like saying Russia nuked us because 40 states made contingency plans in the event it ever happened.

    ————————–

And after all that those teams still lose. That tells me the Pats are just preparing well. No, “spying” going on. Sounds like those teams are butt-hurt. At least, thats all I can assume since no evidence is being presented. If the Pats are really doing all of that then how is there no evidence over the last 16 years? Surely, there would be a bug, poor game performance due to fake plays, etc.

    Yeah, butt-hurt.

    -Steelers fan

  56. It blows my mind that that Pats fans continue to deny the obvious. The entire success of their franchise for the last 15 has been based on cheating. You have to be truly delusional to think that this is all some big made up conspiracy. I mean you literally have to be insane. I don’t even think that most of you who are defending your team believe what you’re saying you just feel like it’s what you have to do.

  57. and yet…..the Patriots are still the winning-most team of the last decade.

looks like these 19 teams aren’t as good on the diversion as they think they are.

  58. Zero evidence that the Patriots have bent the rules in any way that every other team in the league has. Zero. For those of you saying, “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” you are correct. The fire is an agenda by teams that have been being beat by the most consistently winning team in the Superbowl era getting salty and being willing to do anything to bring them down. It’s that simple. Other teams are not willing to put in the effort the Patriots are, and so can’t win consistently against them. They can’t beat them on the field, so they make up stories or they point out a rule everyone is bending but only indict the Patriots so they can hobble them with suspensions, fines, and the loss of draft picks. It’s lazy, cowardly, and immoral, as are everyone who chooses to support this relentless witch hunt constructed to bring down a team relentlessly in the pursuit of excellence.

  59. “jvw1982 says:

What I found interesting is that in an interview with butler after the superbowl, he said they had run that play during practice and bellichick got on his case about it. I find it interesting that the pats practice a defense against a goal line pass play specifically against a team with Lynch at RB.

  60. Let’s take this report and establish the Pats are cheaters. Fine.

Now, then..the question is why didn’t the other teams do more to blow the whistle? It’s pretty clear. They went to the NFL and the NFL tried to squash it, instead of letting it get out to the press. Or, perhaps the press did get wind of something going on, but it wasn’t hard evidence and/or those sources told the media to keep it off the record.

The NFL knows what we all know, that dirty little secret of every team in the NFL tries to gain any advantage they can, legal or illegal. Some go right up to the line and others go over it. I wouldn’t be shocked if other teams at any point since the NFL existed and even currently, don’t tape signals, steal playbooks, basically anything that would be considered grossly cheating. Otherwise, why not out the Pats to the media? Because other teams do it, too. That and the NFL doesn’t want it to get out that every team tries to cheat and not get caught.

Seriously, I doubt there is no team, since the inception of the NFL in 1920, that hasn’t tried to do something outside the rules to gain an advantage, even egregious as taping signals or stealing playbooks.

  61. I’m so tired of this. The NFL are a bunch of liars and the Patriots are a bunch of cheaters. We all get it. Both sides are wrong.

    Pats Fans,

Science does not prove if a person attempted to deflate a ball or not, so please stop using science as a defense. The text messages are what make Tom look guilty. And just because the judge ruled that the NFL over stepped its boundaries does not mean that Tom is innocent. The NFLPA just found a loop hole in the system.

Can we just all admit that both sides are wrong?

  62. Where there is smoke there is fire. These teams just didn’t wake up one day and say hey I think the pats are cheating. They will slip up eventually and get caught red handed.

  63. “Steps teams have taken against the Patriots include running fake plays during walk-through practices in case the Patriots were spying”

Maybe these teams should practice running their real plays more. You know, get better at it.

  64. Since the NFL is becoming a hybrid of reality TV, pro wrestling and a soap opera, I would like to propose Kim K for a sideline gig. We clearly don’t care about football anymore so why not make the show a little easier on the eyes.

  65. How can these delusional NE Cheater FANS deny these accusations? They have no professional or personal relationship with the team in any capacity. In other words, it’s just more Cheater BS.

  66. “What I found interesting is that in an interview with butler after the superbowl, he said they had run that play during practice and bellichick got on his case about it. I find it interesting that the pats practice a defense against a goal line pass play specifically against a team with Lynch at RB.”

lol, did you ever play football? my god some of you people crack me up. teams spend HOURS watching film, breaking down plays, and practicing against them. this happens at every level of the game. they practiced defending that play because the seahawks had run that exact play on the goal line previously that season.

this sentiment is the exact same as the people crying about plays with eligible/ineligible receivers. there is no mystery. the things you think are mysterious are due to common practices at every single level of football.

  67. Lolz at the pathetic sheep believing these lies.

Didn’t you read the other article with Martz saying the league added lies and changed his statement to the point it didn’t resemble what he had said ?

Don’t you people get it ? The league and bspn are lying through their teeth.

  68. Yes, it’s sooo good to be a Pats fan. The patriots scare the bejeezus out of the rest of the league, and owned the comissioner in court…..it’s good to be king!

Can’t wait to see the shiny new Super Bowl 49 Championship banner raised Thursday night.

  69. Wow, and yet none of these precautions or steps have turned up any additional evidence that they were actually doing anything inappropriate. And yet the dominance continued….

Maybe the problem is your team, not the Pats….

  70. Simple question if their cheating is rampant how come nobody will put their name to the claims?

Funny how they are reported as being serial cheaters and so few people will collaborate that in the public domain.

  71. What a bunch of suckers. If the Patriots were doing these things for all these games, there would have been much more concrete evidence by now. The Patriots received harsh penalties for Spygate. But it looks like in the long run, the Patriots have had more gain than they lost, because of the paranoia these other teams face. Belichick hates distractions (Welker “foot” press conference). Belichick loves that all these other teams spend valuable time trying to combat non-existent spying, the distraction is valuable enough in itself.

Better story would be which are the idiot teams not taking counter-measures?
    —–

The other teams may be. Since this was an investigative report, they would only include the 19 teams that volunteered information. The other 13 may have simply said ‘no comment’. Although, there are some teams who only play the Pats every 4 years, and may not have invested the effort.

    Pats Fans,

Science does not prove if a person attempted to deflate a ball or not, so please stop using science as a defense. The text messages are what make Tom look guilty.

Please tell me you understand Wells took hand picked text messages, months apart, in different conversations and pieced them together in a way to make it look like it was a single conversation. You need to read the notes and citings before making claims.

  74. I am sure most patriot fans are unc tar heel fans also. Their beloved team can do no wrong and it is always sour grapes, jealousy and all kinds of other conspiracy theories that everyone is out to get them.

  75. If its jealousy for winning then why hasnt this happened to the giants with 2 recent SB wins? The Steelers with multiple wins? Why not to Indy who was winning their division every year for over a decade? This doesnt happen to any winning franchise except the patriots, good lord pats fans- get ur head out of the sand and admit fault. If A-Rod was my fav player i wouldnt still defend him and say its just ‘jealousy’. 19 teams arent wrong, or jealous- they are just sick of one specific team cheating.

  76. The fact that other teams are worried about the Pats cheating is hilarious. Spygate was such a phony story that ESPN, the world wide leader in false reporting, blew up. The infraction was taping signals from the sideline, which was legal til 06(FACT) . The fact that you can still tape opponents signals, except from the sideline is comical. There have been multiple teams caught breaking the rules but when it comes to the Pats, everybody wants to grab their sticks and pitchforks. You know why? Success. After Spygate, the Pats have had the best winning record in the NFL. (FACT) They have been on top and continue to remain on top while others look for excuses to why the win. It’s pathetic how the majority of opposing teams and fans will go to great lengths to try and bring an organization down for having such success. Bill cowher said many teams were talking signals at the time, the Panthers were caught heating up footballs, the Jets videotaped the Pats during a playoff game, the Colts and Falcons pumped noise. There are endless infractions from other teams but none of it matters because they haven’t won as much as the Pats or lost against them. Ultimately, for the haters, keep posting your uneducated posts that have no credibility. Keep thinking that ticks of psi from the legal limit was the reason your team lost. It’s pathetic and embarrassing.

  77. The headline is very misleading and should be changed. Teams aren’t doing this to combat “Patriot’s cheating” – none of which is even slightly indicated in that hilarious SI piece – they are doing this “because they fear the Pat’s are cheating, and can’t demonstrate it.”

The SI piece is worse than the ESPN piece. Deflategate is crashing in flames and these two outlets both run long, breathless pieces on Spygate, neither of which even claim to prove anything new or interesting. It’s clickbait, I realize, but please show some independence from your masters in the NFL. Pathetic.

The only news out of either piece is several owners admitting that the Deflategate fiasco was a make-up call. In the league office, as on the field, make-up calls are bad calls, and damage the “integrity” of the game, such as it is. Now that Brady has won, will we get more “make-up” calls from the League office trying to punish him?

  78. So let me get this straight. Teams do everything they can to stop the Patriots from getting any information. So even if the Patriots are trying to cheat (doubt it) they can’t actually get anything. But the Patriots still kick their a#s…..So this just verifies the Pats are better.

  79. What a bunch of suckers. If the Patriots were doing these things for all these games, there would have been much more concrete evidence by now.
    ————–
How much more evidence do you need? LOL

You have to realize, there isn’t a bunch of NFL police patrolling their every move. So when the Packers for instance caught the guy filming “field conditions” from the sideline and was told by their security to stop….then gets busted filming it from the tunnel and told to stop again, the only thing they can do is report it. Then the Patriots can deny what they were doing and pawn it off as “taping field conditions”. The Packers couldn’t take the camera away and turn over the evidence to the league…so there is no evidence, even though it is clear what they were doing.

This isn’t an Episode of 24. Jack Bauer isn’t going to swoop in with satellite images of their videotaping and playbook stealing. First hand accounts are generally the best you’ll get. Most think that’s concrete enough, more so when it is done in numbers, unless you want to just call them all the former employees liars.

  81. Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania charged the NFL of a cover up. He threatened a full congressional hearing and put the NFL under oath. This came after the 2005 Super Bowl where the Pats “defeated” the Eagles by a field goal. At the time many accused the Pats of cheating during the game. Thus Specter got involved.

  82. I love how patriot shills write 800 word essays on this site and then sign it “Green Bay fan” or “giants fan”. Get real. Patriot fans are as dumb as they appear.

  83. Delusional Pats fans were proven right by a federal judge. Sheeple line up and pray at the ESPN alter of false truths. I’ll take being delusional and right every time.

  84. Someone investigate the no name cornerback who did the “great play out of no where” in this years superbowl… ————————————————————————————– What a stupid staement – the Patriots were in a “Goal line heavy pkg”, they were expecting a Marshan run!

  85. This is never going to stop until Congress gets involved as a matter of anti-trust. The NFL gets an anti-trust exemption which has a high level of accountability and government oversight. If there has been long term institutional cheating by a flagship team then hearings need to called with subpoena powers to determine NFL and team culpability. Just as with steroid hearings, there’s a national interest in the integrity of multi billion dollar businesses which trade on fair play. This isn’t the WWE where everyone knows it’s fake entertainment. The truth will come oug when low level employees are facing federal perjury charges if they lie to protect Belichick and the Patriots.

It needs to be settled or it will continue to taint the game. Yes it’s a waste of government resources but if these allegations are true then this will be the biggest scandal in sports history.

  86. Goodell ordered tapes and notes from the Patriots destroyed, eliminating “a library of scouting material.”

    — Goodell told Sen. Arlen Spector that the Patriots’ tapes destroyed by NFL employees went back to the 2006 season, but then confessed that the Patriots began taping in 2000 and that the destroyed notes, on mostly AFC East rivals, went back to 2002.

    — Numerous allegations were sent to the he NFL’s competition committee members, but none of those were investigated.

    — A former Patriots assistant coach said the “system of covert videotaping” and ” a secret library” had gotten “out of control.”

    — The Patriots had an employee, Ernie Adams, whose job it was to spend all week decoding signals on spreadsheets obtained by a scout at Patriots’ future opponents’ games.

    — Patriots videographers were told to put tape over their team logos and say they were from Patriots TV or Kraft Productions when questioned by opposing team’s security. In November 2006, the Senate investigation of Spygate said Patriots staff member Matt Estrella said he was “taping panoramic shots of the stadium.”

    — The Patriots would sign players recently cut by upcoming opponents and “pay them only to help decipher signals.”

    — The Patriots would send low-level employees into the visiting locker room to steal the play sheet, consisting of the first 20 scripted offensive calls, or into the visiting team hotel to look for playbooks and scouting reports.

    — When at home, the Patriots would scramble and jam the coach-to-quarterback radio line of their opponents, and it happened so often that when a league official was told to sit in the coaches’ box and wait for it to happen, it did, as expected, on a big third-down play.

    — The Patriots’ tactics helped them against lesser teams like the Dolphins and Bills, who never changed their signals throughout the season.

    Patriots legacy!!!!

  87. The shame of it is: these teams shouldn’t have to consider taking these kinds of action. That’s why you can’t have a merit system…eventually someone starts taking advantage of it.

  88. Love it, and I am sure Belichick loves it too. Every minute spent thinking about the Patriots’ spying is a minute less spent thinking about football.
… and every minute spent NOT thinking about the Patriots’ spying, is when the Patriots may find a way to steal all your sensitive super-secret info and cost you the game.
Face it, your team can’t win this battle.

  89. I love the fact that teams are so distracted from what is important when preparing for the Patriots. The Pats are so in the head of other organizations that they actually waste precious time worried about things that really don’t serve their own performance.

Remember when you played the game, your coach would execute a play in scrimmage, be unhappy with the result and yell. RUN IT AGAIN! Now you’re own teammates knew what was coming, you coach told them, what does it boil down to? Execution! If you execute YOUR JOB as EXPECTED it doesn’t matter if your opponent knows what you’re doing.

I’m a Pats fan. When Miami sprung the wildcat offense on us back in ’08(?) you didn’t hear anyone from the Pats cry foul? or claim Deception they way Baltimore did.

    Rant..

  90. Meanwhile, MLB clubs are glancing over at NFL teams and giggling behind their hands because the football guys are amateurs. If you want real, creative cheating, then go look at MLB sometime.

NE’s just in everyone’s head, and “they cheated” is an easy out to explain why you lost, and probably in a humiliating fashion. NE doesn’t test Baltimore’s run defense, and instead uses quick passes and tricky maneuvers to win, well they cheated. NE beats Indy so badly they had to limp all the way back to Lucas Oil with two black eyes and a broken arm, well, they cheated.

I’m a Texans fan. To my regret, but that’s not the point. Though I do still miss the Oilers.

A couple of years ago, we were firing on all cylinders. The offense was clicking, the defense under Wade Phillips was taking names and kicking ass, and nobody could stop us. Then NE comes to town and hands us our bloody heads, because we had no secondary – primarily thanks to the masterful drafting of Rick Smith, who’s still there.

I have my criticisms of Texans ownership and management, but at least we took that licking like a man. We got back up and finished the season as best as we could. We didn’t go cry about it for the next ten years the way some other teams have.

Don’t accuse the Patriots of cheating just because you lost, get good. Football is as much about drafting, coaching, and preparation as it is the actual game itself. Belichick isn’t stupid. If you have no secondary, they’ll pass all over you. If your D-line looks like swiss cheese, then Blount is going to beat you three times over.

Just like Indy found out. They’re a soft organization in the easiest division in the NFL, and they cry foul any time a real team kicks their teeth in.

wow. NFL non-pat teams are really looking more and more pathetic as they whine about their suspicions without tangible proof of any kind.
    _____________________________________________

I know, right?! If only there was some sort of video tape….

  92. It actually makes perfect sense for teams to do this. Anyone who’s read the articles and evidence in Spygate is aware the Patriots not only routinely video’d play callers but also pre-game walk throughs from 2000-2008, that we know about. They were sent official warnings in 2006 and 2007 telling them it was illegal and to stop and they kept doing it. So it would be more surprising if any team trusted NE to play by the rules or to even stop cheating after they’ve been caught.

Ex-Pats and other players characterize Belicheat as a shady lawyer that will use any loophole they can find to gain an advantage and when those loopholes are closed, he’ll find others. Winning on a level playing field is simply not in the Patriots nature.

  93. I love how the Pats fans claim it’s all about “hate!”

Funny how we never hear anything about the San Antonio Spurs, San Francisco Giants, Chicago Blackhawks, or any other modern day powerhouses being labelled as cheaters. Plenty to be jealous about if you’re not a fan of those teams, yet somehow no repeat allegations of systematic cheating with those teams.

  94. Another AFC team has brought its own sports drinks because the ones the Patriots supply are often late, warm or both.

Perception is reality. Pats were caught cheating red handed and will always be painted that way. How long until a Tim Donaghy type revelation from a Pats employee comes out?

    ——————————————–

I don’t know, how long has it been? We are still waiting. There were supposed to be a parade of them after the Wack-job video guy / Hawaian golf pro who turned out to have mostly nothing. Just some stolen tapes of coaches on the sidelines, just like Bill said they contained. Plus some fun stadium people watching.

After 8 years, the “just wait until….” line is wearing thin.

Are they the best dynasty ever?
    Yes

Do they have the best coach ever?
    Yes

Do they have the best player ever?
    Yes

No wonder they have the most haters ever! We’re all JEALOUS!!!

————-Yes, the rest of the league are all Paranoid and are persecuting the poor, poor Patriots. You know, as opposed to maybe the Pats are actually Crooks??? Maybe other sports don’t have crybabies for fans.

  101. If the Patriots didn’t cheat then why did the ball boys take the balls into the bathroom for app. 100 seconds. Could it be scientifically explained why the balls were deflated? Maybe but the video tape doesn’t lie. And if you don’t gain any edge by changing the PSI then why try to do it in the first place?

  102. Extra precautions should be don’t show up to the stadium until game time if you want a fair chance to win. Even that might not be feasible with this cheating organization.

  103. SI is looking for a bed time story…they should have started with “Once upon a time there was this big bad wolf…”
Who wouldn’t be paranoid playing NE? When your playing the best team over the past 14yrs. Heck, they’ve even gotten better since ‘spygate’, which was a rule break of the lowest order. The real problem is the front office is filled with bitter folks whose teams got thrashed by NE. Now, they are intent on looking for revenge. You can bet if opposing teams found hidden mikes, proof of theft, proof of anything, it would be splashed across the papers. The only thing they have found is their own paranoia. Seattle could have won that game, but as I’ll say again, that passing play was a Brady play, not a Wilson play. Wilson is too short to see over the line, and deliver a bullet to a slot receiver.

  104. This is awesome lol teams are actually wasting their practice time running fake plays because the Patriots are that much in their heads? They’re violating fire codes because they’re that scared of the big bad Patriots? Why stop there? They might as well provide a decoy bus to a decoy hotel. They must be laughing up a storm at 1 Patriots Place right now

  105. This is hilarious. The Pats are really in the heads of most of the team owners/management in the NFL. So much so that the league office attempted to make up a scandal in deflategate just to get them. The Patriots at this point should be the ones that act paranoid yet there are 20 other teams out there hearing voices and foot steps that’s not there.

  106. I believe this is exactly what the NFL wanted to happen. Brady was just a means to an end (aka: appeals court). Patriot employees, past and present, will soon start talking. Kraft can’t buy off all of them. Grab your popcorn!

  107. Can never be too careful where the Pats are concerned.

And people laughed at the Colts/Peyton for worrying about a bugged locker room. Meanwhile, most of the league believes the Pats are cheaters and try to protect themselves. It’s a shame. It shouldn’t have to be this way.

  108. the main point of this article:

You could say the rest of the NFL is paranoid, and you might be right.

Multiple unnamed sources, all talking about looking for bugs and never finding them, suspecting wrongdoing but never finding any evidence, so gripped by paranoia that if their plane lands 10 minutes late they are convinced that air traffic control is under the influence of Bill Belichick

  109. At the very least, the pats owe Bill Cowher an apology for their cheating-led win over the Steelers in the 01 AFCCG.

  110. OK football fans. . .Here is what happened in a nutshell.

The p*triots were caught cheating between 2000 and 2007, and cheating PROFOUNDLY. However, they happened to be rewarded for their cheating with a couple of Super Bowl titles at that time. Which left the NFL in a bad situation. They couldn’t take away their titles (even though they were ill gotten), because of how bad that would make the league look. So they destroyed the tapes, covered up as much as they could, and had everyone say “everything’s OK”.

Then the p*triots had the AUDACITY to cheat AGAIN!

That’s why the league and Goodell went after them so hard, and for something as trivial as deflated footballs.

  111. In the words of Stephen Stills, “Paranoia strikes deep. Into you life it will creep. Starts when you’re always afraid. Step outta line the man comes and takes you away.”

19 teams are saying,”They can’t be that good. They must be cheating”. And where did this little gem of a story come from? Much ado about nothing. If this keeps up I wouldn’t want to be a Pats opponent this year. This year’s team doesn’t have the talent that the 2007 post spygate team had but they will be one very PO’d team and Colts will feel their wrath, among others.

I have to agree with some observant Pats fans who posted their thoughts above. The Patriots have gotten inside the collective heads of the NFL. The response to this is to come up with lame excuses to make the rest of the league feel good like, “They must be cheating”. Good luck with that chumps. See you at the Super Bowl.

Yes, Bill is so good that he managed to get Philadelphia to mismanage the last 2 minutes of a 3 point game so badly that they ran out of time. Then in a desperation throw, right down the middle to the elusive and sneaky Rodney Harrison for the interception. Amazing what video taping signals can do. Why it can even make a All-star QB dry heave on the sideline (or was it in the huddle, anyway ask TO) at a critical point in a championship game. People have lost their minds.

    147 42

Why does it seem there is another cheating story every week against the Patriots? I don’t find the timing odd, just seems normal now. When 19 teams and former coaches and personnel of the Patriots are saying they cheat, it is not all Goodell trying to get them back, there is definitely smoke that the Patriots interpret rules and sportsmanship differently than other teams. I want the allegations to go away, I really do because I think it hurts the game, but all the Patriots fans saying it is just paranoia by lesser NFL teams is pretty lame. If this was coming out against my team I would have serious questions about the integrity of the people in charge. My team beat the Patriots the last time they played, they don’t fear them, I am sure they would like them to follow rules though.

  128. “….Ex-Pats and other players characterize Belicheat as a shady lawyer that will use any loophole they can find to gain an advantage and when those loopholes are closed, he’ll find others.”

    ==================================

Who??? There’s been hundreds in and out of Foxboro since 2000. With all this “news” now exposed, why should any “ex” have any fears? Sounds like there should be lots of money for someone to tell.

Also, name a cut player who was brought in and paid just to decipher the former team’s signals, as someone claimed.

  129. Lol wow the rest of the teams look really pathetic in this!! They are so in the other teams head that it makes sense they’re best dynasty in NFL history. Keep fretting NFL over fake claims and we’ll keep on winning Super Bowls

  130. “The Salem witch trials occurred in colonial Massachusetts between 1692 and 1693. More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft—the Devil’s magic—and 20 were executed. Eventually, the colony admitted the trials were a mistake and compensated the families of those convicted. Since then, the story of the trials has become synonymous with paranoia and injustice, and it continues to beguile the popular imagination more than 300 years later.” – The Smithsonian

Now, in 2015, we are in an extended period of hysteria known as Patriots hating, a pathological paranoia very similar to Salem where logic is cast aside so that the paranoid can explain their beliefs (really what they want to believe) and explain away reality (what they don’t want to believe, the Patriots win because they play better than their opponents). Patriots hating is so paranoid that it has lasted 7 times longer than the Salem witch hunts.

If it wasn’t for science and the legal system, Tom Brady would have already been a very public sacrifice.

Alas, the haters, so certain in their beliefs, just can’t stop accusing.

The problem is that many teams coaches and players view the NFL as a game whilst BB and the Patriot players view it as a career. Just look at how Reggie Wayne recently left the Patriots because “it wasn’t fun”. Are you kidding me? This leaved little wonder why the Pats manhandle the Colts and many other teams year after year. Its not just paranoia. Its a combination of a lot of things. Less people notice when other teams cheat. Less media coverage when other (and let’s be honest, worse) teams cheat the salary cap, pump in crowd noise, spy, mess with ball pressure, etc. And then there’s paranoia, and then there’s the fact that many allegations are being levied by bitter Pats rivals who have an axe to grind.

So it’s lots of things. But no one has ever caught the Pats deflating balls, or bugging locker rooms, or stealing play books. You’d think if they were really doing all those things all the time they would have been caught.

  137. This is hysterical. Patriot fans have to be laughing their asses off. I mean, consider the source. ESPN, a bunch of morons rivaled only by those in the league office.

  138. If they are then it ain’t working as the Pats continue to win. Only two miracles on the Giants side prevented the Pats from winning 2 more Superbowl.

  139. Next thing you know the Pats will be using stickum or piping in crowd noise, or heating the balls on the sideline, or rubbing the balls down with sticky towels….

Then, everybody will care about those things.

  140. ESPN. The worst of the worst. Obviously nobody wants to click on the “patriots defending their 4th super bowl story”… the “patriots cheated” one is much more clickable.

Nahhhhh. Brady will take it out on 16 teams on the field during the regular season. Then he will take it out on 3 more teams in the postseason. Then as they take Goodell away from the podium in straight-jacket because he just can’t bring himself to hand the Lombardi trophy over to Brady….Brady will have the last laugh.

  144. If all these accusations are true take the Super wins away from Patriot Organization. Oh ya they don’t do it because it’s all BS from other owners and players who lost to Pat’s. Seriously take them if you have any proof.

  145. The difference between success and failure:

    Commitment.

Prepare to win and if you lose, you still win.

You see, it is about commitment, not about wins or losses. They come as a result of commitment.

Excuses are not acceptable. You lost.

    You lost…

  146. It’s funny how ESPN never manages to ever get any of these whiners to give their names. Probably because they are all liars with not one ounce of proof who would end up getting sued by the Pats. I think the Pats need to sue ESPN for slander and libel. This would force ESPN to reveal the sources or pay and apologize to the Pats. You can’t just report anything you want and hide behind “anonymous sources”. The last guy who reported the Pats cheated ended up recanting and the reporter got canned by the Boston Herald who did a two page apology. It’s sour grapes. I’m sure this new ESPN story is another false leak like Mortensens’ “2 pounds under” lie. Leaked by Roger Goodell and the other Jets losers. Have any of you noticed taht those blaming the Pats are all former Jets employees who were with the Jets at the time Belicheck told them to suck air and left. Grigson, Pasch, Goodell, Kensil, the former Panthers GM. It’s such a joke. I just wish the Pats would just file a lawsuit just to make the league and ESPNs lives difficult and watch them scatter like roaches.

  147. Now sore losers, explain how they win while on the road?

Do they have spies or secret agents in all opposing camps feeding them information? Do they have jamming devices they take on the road?

Do they have cronies at the NSA who use satellites and read the emails of opposing teams?

With all of the counter measures run against them, and the Pats are still so effective, maybe they should get out of the football business and start running our intelligence agencies.

Something tells me we wouldn’t have invaded Iraq if the Pats had done the scouting since they appear more effective at intelligence gathering. All while doing so undetected. My goodness if everything they say is true, they make the Mossad look like amateurs.

  148. This doesn’t diminish their accomplishments on the field*

*The rest of the league, two commissioners and every fan outside of Maine and Mass believe the Patriots cheated over a long period of time. Get used to the ********************************************.

  149. This is getting ridiculous and comical. The Pats are in everyone’s head. Apparently, they are wasting their talents on football. With their stealth like spying skills and equipment, they should be in charge of National Security and spying on Isis. Forget the Secret Service, Obama should have the Pats covering his security!

  150. So, if the Patriots are doing all of these things to cheat, does it therefore mean that when they DO lose, the other team cheated better????

  151. If all this crap about the Patriots that keeps coming up year after year about their institutional cheating was about a division rival…Patriots fans would circle the wagons talking about how it’s obvious that said team cheated.

But because it is their own team, they can’t even be close to rational and instead try to poke holes in every incident as “they hate us cuz they ain’t us” and “we are in their heads!” and all of the other ridiculous crap you wouldn’t expect from even the most delusional fan base.

  152. So, if the Patriots are doing all of these things to cheat, does it therefore mean that when they DO lose, the other team cheated better????
    ————
Just because you cheat to try to get a perceived advantage, doesn’t mean it will give you that advantage in every game or even at all. They still have to play the game with players.

It’s not odd timing at all. The news oganizations haven’t been sitting on this. I’m sure there are some owners who perceive that Brady got away with this, so they are now opening their mouths. The timing is perfectly logical for this leaks to come out…

    Patriot fan in denial…

Not true at all. I do not deny that teams are paranoid of the greatness of the Patriots. I just wish opposing teams and their fans would not lie about that greatness. There are certainly plenty of legitimate reasons to criticize the Patriots during the Belichick/Brady era. Just off the top of my head this Pats fan can quickly list more than 5:

    1. Waiting until 6th round to draft Tom Brady. Patriots are given kudos for that pick which, in reality, they should have made much earlier in the draft.

    2. Robert Kraft’s support of Goodell. I am still not sure that support is over which is nauseating to me.

    3. Belichick’s hubris in ignoring a league-wide memo in 2007 (a/k/a Spygate).

    4. Extending Aaron Hernandez. It did not bother me that they drafted Hernandez in the 4th round in spite of the red flags, but there should have been some signs he was not worth extending even if they did not yet realize he is a homicidal maniac.

    5. Chad Johnson

    6. Struggles to Develop CBs and WRs. The Pats have had some successes in that department but still too many high picks that have not panned out.

There are certainly plenty more although, FWIW, going for it on 4th down against Indy still does not bother me. I have always been okay with that call even though it failed.

  155. Wow. The Patriots fans who like to make non-arguments about “haters” and “jealousy” look pretty inane at this point. The evidence of a long history of cheating that clearly impacted games and forever damaged their own reputation and that of the NFL is incontrovertible. A well written well sourced article makes the compelling case that Belichick and Brady are two of the most successful cheaters in the history of professional sports. Shoeless Joe Jackson is turning in his grave muttering “and I was banned”?

    ____
OMG. I don’t even know where to start with this. The first three things are things you should be mad at the league for if they happened.
Some of the stuff is pure conjecture.
As for Bills Dolphins not changing their calls, my god, how lame are those 2 franchises for not figuring it out if the Pats were doing all of this? They play the Pats twice a year. `
Low level employees? So, the other teams don’t recognize someone skulking around in the locker room and they don’t ask who it is? Who leaves a playbook lying around a hotel room in mid season? Don’t they already know the plays?
Tape over team logo’s? Really? You show up at my door with duct tape all over things and I am going to be curious as to why.

It really sounds more and more like other teams are really not to bright.

  157. Anyone believe this didn’t come straight from the NFL. Email your senators and ask them to start an investigation into NFL corruption. It’s time for the league’s anti-trust status to be revoked! (Anyone here trust the NFL? Even if you hate the Pats? This could happen to your team, it did happen to the Saints)!

  158. Eric Mangini pretty much started this whole wave against New England because he was mad that his Jets teams were awful.

What evidence? Show me any piece of evidence that proves they cheated outside of taping signals from an illegal spot…

What? There’s nothing? Because it’s all conjecture and “in-your-headness”.

I could do the exact same thing and call the Giants cheaters because there’s no way they should have been able to beat the unbeatable Patriots. But they did. I don’t have proof, but it couldn’t have happened, so it must be cheating.

Or I could say they won on a great defense and a lucky as crap catch and get on with my life (after crying myself to sleep for a few nights, lol).

Why can’t you do the same thing?

Because the Pats are so far in your head, you can’t see reality for the fantasies playing out in your brain.

  161. Much satisfaction derived that every close victory the Pats have won is now put into question – as are all of their postseason exploits. Their legacy has morphed from winning team to winning by cheating team and the same clouds that hang over the 1919 White Sox and Barry Bonds now hangs over Belicheat, Brady and that whole unethical organization. Now when a parent says “I want my son to grow up to be like Tom Brady,” the implication is “if my son’s a winner by whatever means, it doesn’t matter if he’s had to cheat others to do so.”

  162. Belichick is a military man and Kraft allows him to run the team with military style discipline. Belichick weaves that spirit of combat into his strategy by treating each game like a battle to be won.

Therefore, ANY advantage or edge he can acquire for his team to win he will take it. BB’s approach to football is serious–he’s out to win. And win he does.

Other owners, GMs or coaches may whine about all the winning that the Pats are doing but are they not willing to bend the rules and seek out every advantage for their team to win? That’s on them.

  163. Not only are the Patriots in every NFL teams head, now it’s in the minds of the haters…

Sorry, but can’t help but laugh at all of these “allegations.”

  164. “Being labeled a cheater is bad. That is the worst kind of person. I almost feel bad for Pat fans. ”

What about when the justification for labeling someone a cheater are lies from the people making the accusations ? Because those people are less competent and jealous of those they are accusing ?

And personally I would say rapists, torturers, etc and other things along those lines are far worse than someone who has been labeled a cheater (whether or not there is any truth to the table)

  165. I’ve never seen two articles with so many ‘unnamed players’,
‘ex-coaches’, ‘ex-players’…The only name I read was Mangini and he refused to comment for the article. You have to wonder why these “people” wouldn’t consent to have their names used…..either they don’t exist, they lied or they are too cowardly to come forward and let us know who they are.

  166. 19 team ran fake plays, eh? Gee I wonder if the 2008 introduction of the “wildcat” in Foxboro by the Dolphins was one of them…

What exactly is new in this report? That Patriots allegedly stole playsheets more than 7 years ago?

It was already known they were stealing signals 7 years ago and they were punished for it.

The Patriots stole signals from the time of Belichick’s arrival until they were punished. That is an assumption I made in 2007. Of course it was an advantage, or why would you do it.

The 3 million dollar Wells investigation reviewed all the teams communications and video and found no reoccurrence of this kind of stuff, which I am sure is what the league was actually looking for.

Why is it suddenly news now. The timing is dubious for a report that literally provides no new information and repeats many slanderous accusations that have been disproven.

  168. This whole story is another concoction by the NFL and ESPN because they lost and were put t0 shame by Brady, Kraft and Berman. The NFL and ESPN lied to try to take down the Patriots in Deflategate and they are doing the exact same thing here. Some fans of other teams have started to catch onto the conspiracy and lies after what happened in Federal Court. This ridiculous story may backfire on the NFL and ESPN, more are realizing that the information coming out of these two organizations is nothing but a big, steaming pile of poo. Yes, poo!

  169. And people laughed at the Colts/Peyton for worrying about a bugged locker room. Meanwhile, most of the league believes the Pats are cheaters and try to protect themselves. It’s a shame. It shouldn’t have to be this way.
    ===
We laughed because they repeatedly scanned their locker room for bugs, never found any, and then talked strategy in the non-private hallway.

  170. I see what’s going on here. If you’re not a Patriots apologist, you are a sheeple. Seriously guys, you’re responsible for your own problems. Man up for once. I know that’s asking a lot of Brady, Belichick and Kraft but it’s the only way.

So what you are saying is the Pats cheat and its all the other teams faults that they don’t?

  172. What amazes me is how vulnerable most that post here really truly are. People take an opinion article with nothing more then old news with fresh paint on it and run with it like its factual evidence and gospel.

Here is a fact. The NFL Game Day Ops Manual clearly states that teams can video tape anything and everything. As a matter of fact it directs teams to make sure that scoreboard operators are on point with getting down/distance, time, etc all on point. Why? As the manual states, BECAUSE TEAMS ARE TAPING EVERY PLAY and need that information.

What the ESPN article didn’t give the thirsty kool-aid drinkers was a link to the manual or even a statement off the top that VIDEO TAPING IS LEGAL!

So someone please tell me how they cheated? Why are the Pats held to a different standard then the other 31 teams in the league who are taping every game, the same way, in the same manner?

Not too hard to find and read the manual unless you don’t want to know the true facts and just want to drink the ESPN Kool-Aid.

  173. 19 teams and obviously 19 owners who just can’t ask the simple question:

show me who is making the allegations and what proof do they have?

ESPN and SI should be sued unless they can provide credible evidence otherwise this is simply league driven slander.

I want to know the truth, if it is true, suspend the team for a year, the death penalty.

If complete BS and the NFL is being sore losers because they lost the case, then a pox on them.

    WWE, just unbelievable.

  174. The very last sentence in this article is telling:

“But there’s no denying the perception around the league that the Patriots are cheaters.”

Wow……it really is unbelievable how many teams believe they cheat!

There is something to be said in HOW you win.

It seems the patriots don’t care HOW you win…….just win.

  175. As much as I hate to admit it, my Patriots will always be labeled as dirty, snake-like, cheaters. That being said, I am contemplating becoming a Redskins fan because they won 3 Superbowls legitimately. Arghhhh, so conflicted! Thoughts?

  176. How about that report on Kraft hanging out with the judge who ruled in his favor? The Patriots’ karma is coming.

  177. “ESPN and SI should be sued unless they can provide credible evidence otherwise this is simply league driven slander.”

If the Pats could file a lawsuit for slander they would. What does that tell you?

  178. Anyone saying that the NFL is releasing all of this new info to make the Patriots look bad, don’t have a clue. That damage has already LONG been done, mainly by Bellichek, Brady, and all the other employees both past & present covering up the truth. In the eyes of any clear thinking individual, the Patriot organization as a whole will be tainted and contain nothing but asterisks & parenthesis for the rest of all time. Nothing any Patriot fan can ever do about it, period. It is, what is will always be, completely foul and totally inappropriate behavior.

And GODdell should have been fired over the weekend.
    .

  179. I love you scrappy Pats fans and the way you always make lemonade out of lemons. It’s not about the fact your team puts the whole league on alert because of their rampant systematic cheating — it’s the fact that you are in their heads!

It’s not about why should teams HAVE to waste time dealing with one’s team’s cheating, it’s about how GLORIOUS it is that they do!

    Brilliant!

  180. Fairly clear that most of U don’t understand that everyone was taping in 2005 and part of 2006. It wasn’t illegal in 2007 as long as it was done in certain areas. SB’s 2001, 2003, 2004

Liar and cheater is Goodell. No doubt he whipped up the frenzy today…Mike and Mike? Oh I forgot to mention coward too. Not enough balls to show his face at opening night! Deflated..

BB is the devil… Sure whatever you say. I’m going to embrace the hate.. Come get the belt, take it if you can. Patriots 2014 SB49 Champions

  181. bspn & si are never shy about putting on the knee pads for the league. Character assassination, the last vestige of the defeated. The Pats are in almost everybody’s heads. Very thankful to be a Giants fan instead of belonging amongst the whiners, none of the BS just strap up and ball

  182. Booo Hooooo cries the rest of the NFL. Booooo Hooooo! Funny how this new “story” comes out after the NFL lost it’s case against Brady. How convenient. LOL! What a joke, the NFL front office is making themselves look even more pathetic than they already are and I didn’t think that was possible! Who knew?

  183. So had Goodell punished the Patriots harsh enough the first time, he wouldn’t have been trying to stick something on them that cannot be stuck?

So basically because they cheated so bad before and got away with it, they tried to double up the punishment for the new time they’re caught cheating.

So the real issues here are 1. Roger Goodell let a team get off way too easy with cheating. And of course #2 The cheating patriots continue to cheat and not get punished….

    ok great

  184. Every anti Patriot hater here and elsewhere need to take a deep breath and just shut up! If they can’t see what’s happening here. They are as delusional as that Mad Hatter Commissioner running the NFL. And his sinister organization that is feeding the pliant media this stuff. This is literally a smear filled PR blitzkrieg being waged against the Patriots by Goodell, media hacks from ESPN & elsewhere and a core group of hateful, vengeful owners/conspirators. Wonder why this happened so close after the humiliating court loss?????

Now after taking a deep breath-digest facts & common sense please. Football is a WAR GAME! As are Competitive Intelligence gathering & Marketing Campaigns by every successful Corporation in the world! A company, league, team routinely engage in spying, espionage and any means necessary to win. Every company, everyone works for, who is reading or writing on this forum does similar stuff or worse under the radar.

What the Patriots did and do PALES in comparison to what Global corporations, banks and other institutions do every single day. In fact, those who put that steak on your table, drug in your cabinets, car in your garage, and gasoline in that car are all cheaters against their competitors in the same ways. EVERY SINGLE NFL TEAM DOES EXACTLY WHAT THE PATRIOTS ARE BEING SMEARED FOR TO A GREATER OR LESSER DEGREE! SOme are just lousy stumblebums losers at it. And are most like the very ones waging the hidden anti Patriot PR War. Do any of you think Pete Carroll in Seattle doesn’t bend the envelope? Why did he flee from USC? I say GOOD FOR PETE! Keep on winning dude. And let the losing whiners whimper for help in their corners (with their Binkies in tow). Jets, Colts (tanking a season for Luck), Saints, Giants et al. THEY ALL CHEAT! And they do it to gain a competitive edge in a debilitating WAR GAME.

Wake up and stop being stooges in this Goodell/NFL slight of hand Blitzkrieg. To distract way from the sheer incompetence and sinister motivations for what he is actually doing!

  185. This is supposed to be some kind of news? Everybody knows how they win. The part I can’t stand is that this is coming from the same media outlets who have continued to praise Belichik and Brady for their “brilliance”.

  186. Just proves that the only team that we know for sure has not cheated is the Patriots. All these precautionary measures by the other teams prove it.

  187. the following paragraph was exactly written in both the SI and ESPN articles. If you believe these “stories” are published the same day is just a coincidence you need to think again. The NFL offices are now conducting a slime campaign with innuendo and anonymity.

Check the stories, how amazing almost word for word, on the same day.

“It got out of control,” a former Patriots assistant coach says. Sources with knowledge of the system say an advance scout would attend the games of upcoming Patriots opponents and assemble a spreadsheet of all the signals and corresponding plays. The scout would give it to Adams, who would spend most of the week in his office with the door closed, matching the notes to the tapes filmed from the sideline. Files were created, organized by opponent and by coach. During games, Walsh later told investigators, the Patriots’ videographers were told to look like media members, to tape over their team logos or turn their sweatshirt inside out, to wear credentials that said Patriots TV or Kraft Productions.

  188. I don’t like New England but 99% of accusations on this site is made up, people read it and believe it. I am guilty sometimes of believing the posts that I read but in reality most of it is made up. Anybody can write what they want, distort the the truth and have no repercussions it’s easy. Do the Patriots really spy on other teams ? Show me hard evidence not he say, she say it’s all BS. It was a while before I realised the infamous deflator texts were nothing to do with the AFC championship game because of the selective information put out there and all the other selective BS by the league and ESPN and others in the end I didn’t know what was going on.

Headlines like: “Jets Cheat, But They Still Lose” don’t garner any clicks. Who really cares about a team that hasn’t done anything since they first landed on the moon?

Of course, the fact that most of the league office is filled with former Jets people means they aren’t going to get a lot of negative attention anyway.

  202. As more time goes by more and more information is going to be leaked and come out of the woodwork exposing just how low-class and without sportsmanship the Patriots organization is, and eventually it will have severe consequences for them and completely tarnish their legacy.

It’s going to happen, it is just a matter of time. We haven’t seen anything yet.

  203. 1. Tuck rule

    2. Vinateri kicking in a blizzard

    3. Mike Martz 3-4 in playoffs

    4. Warner’s interception

    5. Brady’s winning drive and Vinateri’s kick (times two)

    6. McNabb throwing up

    7. Reid’s slow-down two-minute offense

    8. McGinnest tackling James on the goal line

    9. Manning throwing the ball to Ty Law

    10. Bruschi’s interception

    11. Sterling Moore knocking the ball out of Lee Evans hands

    12. Missed Billy Cundiff field goal

    13. flacco interception by Duron Harmon

    14. Butt fumble

    15. Jonas Gray runs over Colts

    16. Brink goes for 145 yards against the Broncos in the playoffs

    17. Malcolm Butler makes biggest play in super bowl history after Brady brings them back from 10 points down

I believe that is called execution, not cheating.

  204. Bill Belickick in 4 yrs as head coach of the Browns: 36-44. Below .500 coach. Tom Brady a mediocre college player at best getting drafted in the 6th round. They both go to the Patriots and with Krafts close relationship to Goodell the franchise gets leniency with cheating and two below average guys shoottt to stardom. Or maybe just one night a unicorn came to them in their sleep and gave them special powers to magically become great. I guess that’s more probable then they cheated.

  205. All these Patriots fans, or their sympathizers are really part of the lunatic fringe.

Why on EARTH would the NFL and Roger Goodell WANT to have to find something wrong with the most successful franchise in the sport? Why would he want to have to punish them? This makes ZERO sense. Anything bad about the Patriots, simply makes the entire NFL look bad. What would make more sense is for the NFL and Goodell to supress these stories as much as possible, not to start them.

The recent story about the Rams SB loss seems much more realistic. A “panicked” Goodell insisted that head coach Mike Martz issue a statement saying that he was satisfied with the NFL’s investigation of SpyGate and that he was satisfied that the Patriots didn’t cheat. Martz provided a statement, but said the “statement” from him that the league released was unrecognizable, probably because he wasn’t satisfied that the Patriots didn’t cheat.

And if you are a logical, reasonable person, not a delusional sports fan, you know this makes more sense. It would be in the NFL’s best interest to take any cheating allegation and make it disappear, make it seem like it was nothing, no big deal.

The NFL has everything to lose if people think the most successful team in the league constantly cheats. Why would they be the source of these constant cheating stories?

Patriots fans, stop living in your delusional world. Your franchise is run by a cheater. It is not a coincidence that the Patriots are the only team in the modern era to be able to be great for 15 years.

I am a Giants fan so I have nothing to be jealous about here. We kicked your cheating asses twice in the SB. I wished once upon a time that Belichick would have followed Parcells as our head coach. But now I am so glad that the Giants’ organization has nothing to do with this cheating loser. We can look back at our SB titles with pride.

Again, a logical, rational man that sees that the NFL would do anything to make all these cheating allegations and truths go away. It is not in their best interest. If these stories keep coming out, it’s because there is something to them not because the NFL for some completely illogical reason, wants to ruing the reputation of the most successful franchise and coach and QB in the league. It ruins the NFL’s reputation along with it. IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE.

  206. “there’s a perception in the NFL that the Patriots routinely break the rules to gather information about the opposition.”

The word “perception” stems from the word “perceive” which means “to observe”. What people in the NFL have is a belief, not a perception.

Don’t know exactly when it became popular in this country to conflate belief and observation, but it’s not a good thing to do.

Only team that I know of that of that allowed a snow plow to plow the spot for thier FG kicker to kick a game winning field goal when no plowing was done for the other team.

    —-

The plow followed the Dolphins up the field and was ready to do the same job for Shula, but he was too proud.

BTW, plowing the field was not against the rules at the time. But accusing the Patriots of “cheating” when they do something legal is nothing new. Indeed, it is the most typical form of accusation.

Do u think its at all wierd that the tapes were burned and they were punished for ONE instance of taping? I mean if it was ongoing for 7 yrs………..thats a much bigger punishment than for 1 game correct?!?!?! And i get what ur saying about evidence, but if every team seems to come forward with the same mentality………there HAS to be something to that. Its not a coincidence, teams that arent in their division, have never lost big games to them have zero reason to make this up. This is the basic idea of my buddy telling me he saw my girl cheating on me and me saying he is just ‘jealous’ of our love and its BS. Then 5 more friends ttell me the same thing and i tell them that they are all jealous too. C’mon, at some point u gotta face reality.

  209. Yeah, well prepared with stolen game plans, stolen signals and a litany of other cheats employed by the Patriots to get an edge in a league that strives for parity.
    ===
If it’s in the trash, then it’s not stolen.

What you have isn’t a litany of cheats, but rather a litany of nameless, baseless accusations.

  210. Those of you who think the nfl wanted this released to make them look better must have been reading a different article. Goodell looks awful in this article in my viewpoint.
    ===
No one ever said that they’re smart – in fact many have said the exact opposite.

  211. The Giants were well prepared.
    ===
The Giants had a simple plan. Rush four on D. Run and play-action on offense. Catch a break or two. They executed it perfectly.

  212. Again, a logical, rational man that sees that the NFL would do anything to make all these cheating allegations and truths go away. It is not in their best interest. Your mistake is assuming the league office to be rational or intelligent. Deflategate showed that the league is run by dishonest, lizard-brained, irrational, ignorant fools.

    ———————————————————
Remember ESPN gives the NFL the cost of what it takes to make a Harry Potter film per Sunday night game aired. Over 100 million bucks a game given to the shield.

  214. Do u think its at all wierd that the tapes were burned and they were punished for ONE instance of taping? I mean if it was ongoing for 7 yrs………..thats a much bigger punishment than for 1 game correct?!?!?!
    ===
Ex post facto. It doesn’t matter what NE was doing PRIOR to the memo. Taping signals from various points wasn’t illegal, no matter how much the people who were taped wish it were.

Arguably: it wasn’t even illegal in 2007 because proper channels weren’t followed for changing the rule, but that’s really water under the bridge.

  215. “But there’s no denying the perception around the league that the Patriots are cheaters.”

I got news for you, it’s not just “around the league,” it’s everywhere outside of Boston.

    * * * * It’s the way they will always be remembered.

  216. At some point you have to think the HOF voters will be using this heavily against Coach Belicheat and Tommy Uggs. Barry Bonds and Roger Clemons treatment may be in their future.

  217. So let me get this straight …

Something that happened over 10 years ago is only coming out right now, a handful of days after the NFL suffered a crushing blow at the hands of the Patriots.

Then when asked earlier today, Goodell said that there was no tie between spy gate and deflate gate when it came to punishments. I believe that about as much as I believe his original response to the elevator video.

According to ESPN, hundreds of people knew the detailed goings on of the Patriots and their shenanigans, however there were no leaks or reports on leaks over that ten-year span, until today’s bombshell.

Something smells very fishy when we live in a country of tattletales and have a news media that pounces on everything … but all of this goes unnoticed for over a decade, until today.

  218. This whole thing has been an ugly, steaming mess of the Patriots and the NFL trading blows back-and-forth.

The NFL seems to be living in a giant glass house while at the same time, chucking stones with reckless abandon.

There has got to be an endless amount of league wide dirty laundry that the NFL would never want made public. Yet they keep teasing that angry dog that is backed into a corner. And that dog could attack at any moment.

I can’t wait to see the Patriots fire back with a knockout blow that takes the entire league down.

  219. Now we know why Goodell said he would ‘Stay away from Foxboro on Opening Night this Thursday’.

Goodell & ESPN are on the same script they started since the Patriots pummeled the Colts 45-7 AFCCG.

The SCRIPT is clear and repeating = Slander & Defame Brady & Patriots to prevent a Super Bowl win. Use social media to perform as executioner via the airwaves controlling the minds of the Sheeple who believe = what they are told to believe.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Giants won with this ‘simple plan’ because they had a front four who could get it done. Patriots mistake was not compensating and game planning with that in mind.

  221. This ESPN article would like us to believe that the PATS have applied various methods of spycraft for over a decade and have never been caught other than the original SPYGATE situation. These other NFL teams actively try to counter and catch the PATS utilizing these methods and have never been able to provide proof that it occurs.

So the PATS have managed to pull-0ff a long term systematic spying program that the NSA and CIA combined would not have been able to accomplish without being caught.

If true then Bill should immediately be selected as the new Director of the CIA – get real folks.

  222. I do love all the Pats fans – “they didn’t find any proof, so it must not have happened”.

Look, I think the NFL front office looks like a bunch of keystone cops…. but even I know with THAT much smoke, something happened.

Worst of all, the Patriots are an excellent team. They don’t need to cheat to win, yet, here we are discussing it yet again.

If you would say that 100% of all allegations against the Patriots were false… I’d say you’re being naive.

If you would say that 100% of all allegations against the Patriots were true… I’d say you’re also being naive.

As usual the truth is usually somewhere in the middle.

  223. With a story this juicy, I would think ESPN and SI would have published them long ago if they could have. So why suddenly investigate and publish now? Because the NFL didn’t want them to before? Because they didn’t have access to sources previously? To capitalize on deflategate now that it is kind of over? Any other thoughts?

  224. I think its hilarious that the Patriots have teams psyched out
prior to ever having set foot on the field to play a game.

Opposing teams look across the field and wonder

    “Are they THAT good ?”

    Yes. They are.

  225. What makes more sense?

That this is a big multi-faceted conspiracy hatched by ESPN, Sports Illustrated, all the other owners and Goodell to unfairly pick on the Patriots because of their success (like that impacts ESPN or Sports Illustrated) and despite it hurting the very NFL that the other teams form?

Or that the Pats HAVE been cheating for some time, that other teams DID try to get it stopped only to be stone walled by Kraft’s buddy, and that other owners DID “eat it” for the sake of the league, up until they can no longer do so?

    Which requires a tin hat???

    Patriots are cheaters.

    FACT

  226. I dated a woman several years ago who worked for the NFL in public relations.

She said they were told they would lose their jobs if they discussed two events with the media. 1) Spygate 2) Super Bowl 40 (Pitt over Seattle).

I always thought there was more to Spygate than what the NFL let out. If there wasn’t…they wouldn’t have destroyed the tapes within hours of receiving them. If the NFL ever needed to prove what little impact those tapes had….I’m sure they would have wanted to keep them as evidence. It’s obvious those tapes showed a lot more than they ever wanted getting out.

  229. This whole story is the equivalent to a sucker punch after the bell in a boxing match.

The rest of the NFL and Hateriot Nation lost fair and square. Deal with it. No amount of cheating by the rest of the league (The NFL’s entire approach to deflate gate from start to finish) could produce a victory for them in the end. An impartial federal judge made sure of that.

  233. It is so much deeper… Think Watergate. Now think 9-11. (The Patriots are what “lifted” this country up) It was all organized as a way to move past the tragedy and on to war. The Patriots are just a piece of the puzzle.

Belichick is a master at communications. Everything he says and everything he doesn’t say is carefully choreographed. So, if he does nothing to dispel the notion that he is spying on you … it’s because that’s what he wants you to believe. Now, ask yourself why.

    YOU ARE AN IDIOT…….

I wouldn’t call a guy holding a gun a murderer either, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t one!

They’ve been proven to be cheaters, Spygate was proof of that and they all benefited from that.

Since Spygate how many SuperBowls do the cheaters have? and they can thank Pete Carroll for that one too.

Those are the facts and they are not disputed!

  247. Can you say paranoid. Let us not forget that jimmy Johnson announced a few years ago on national TV that him and his Cowboys use to dig through trash and search opposing teams locker rooms for anything that would give them an edge. Yet know body cares since Dallas is “Americas team” (named by ESPN). How is this not the same, as many teams do. It’s easy to hate the patriots even when there is no proof because they win,

  248. Let me get this right, a number of teams take extra measures that should uncover… something, but never have? Oh, yeah, that’s definitive isn’t it? The pats must be cheaters if enough teams (and their fans) say so. If I were the pats, I would be telling people that they bought the refs, have other teams’ playbooks, bought off other teams coaches, assistants, etc. How many more teams will be preoccupied with anything other than the game at hand?

  249. A perception? This is news? Because it isn’t new. Haters already think the Pats are cheaters. So what? Ain’t gonna change their minds no matter what you say.

  250. His getting caught cheating while the HC in Denver is the main reason he was fired.

    Oh?

That and the fact he was a terrible HC.

And that he spent a 1st round pick on Tim Tebow?

I think that might have had more to do with it.

Look, the Broncos won two Super Bowls while abusing the salary cap rules. I would argue that’s far more significant that videotaping a game _played in front of tens of thousands of people_ in order to get the coaches’ signals.

Throughout all of this, there is a constant: Roger Goodell doesn’t know how to deal with rules. He doesn’t manage people well. He lies constantly. And somehow, he’s the commissioner of the NFL. The situation will not improve until he’s replaced.

That ESPN and SI would both publish stories now, on the eve of the Super Bowl party in Foxboro on Thursday, is a sign that these clowns are not willing to Let It Go, even though it would be better for the league if they did.

    Goodell is a small man.

  251. Look the majority of teams in all sports try to get an edge. In baseball, players try to steal signs. Hockey players try to get an edge in face-offs.

In football taping of games is accepted. They study films!

To me, this is sour grapes, The Patriots were punished for the spying issue and this was years ago. The only reason to bring it up now, is to make excuses for losing and because judge Berman handed the patriots a win.

  252. You tube has a clip of John Madden, saying live on the air in 1992, that NFL defensive signals are sent in by three guys because it was usual practice for opposing teams to tape the defensive signals.

  253. Sounds pretty rational to me. Who in their right mind trusts a proven cheater to be on the straight and narrow?

Spygate. Opposing team headsets ‘mysteriously’ stop working at integral points of the game at Gillette stadium. Belechick’s injury reports can have 10 guys be questionable before the game and all 10 guys can play.

The Patriots are known around the league for their underhanded tactics. They bend the rules to the point of breaking them. It’s only rational to guard against a cheater as much as possible.

  254. Spygate: Answer ONE question. Is WHAT they taped illegal according to the rules? The answer is no. The video rules ONLY prohibit location not content. If it’s not illegal, then how is it cheating in terms of gaining a competitive advantage? Did they break a rule? Of course they did. Did they gain an advantage by filming from the sideline versus a booth? No. This is why it is overblown. I don’t care what an owner, the Commish or a journalist says. What does the RULE say?

Haters read a headline “Patriots illegally film Jets” and think you cannot film your opponent when the “illegal” part only references camera placement.

Then the haters scream about the memo. Again, while Anderson adds the line “including but not limited to offensive and defensive signals”, the memo does not prohibit filming signals. It prohibits it from the locations listed in the memo including the addition to the rule of “any place accessible to staff”.

Even though Matt Walsh says that he never gave a tape to anyone until AFTER a game, haters don’t care, which is why this SI article is just dumb by saying the “perception is”. Of course , the perception to haters is that they cheated. They believe the lies that have been fed to them, including that the Pats filmed a Rams SB walk through even though the paper issued an apology and retracted the story as being false.

So as far as perception? It is what it is.

  255. It’s not a rumor, it’s not paranoia. It’s not a conspiracy, it’s not another rogue media report.

When “Most teams” think the Patriots cheat then it’s something else entirely.

Whiny apologists and staunch defenders have been around for ages. It doesn’t make them right.

  256. I see a lot of comments, a lot of stories, a lot of allegations about the Patriots being longtime cheaters, but I have yet to see one actual shred of evidence.

I’m a Giants fan, I normally care little about the Patriots one way or the other, but if “everyone” knows they have been cheating for years, I would like to know one thing.

    Where.
    Is.
    The.
    PROOF?!?!

I grow weary of rumors. Time to put up or shut up. Try to remember that the burden of proof rests on the accuser, and not the accused.

  257. Take any of the Pats players or Coaches(BB) included and let them run an organization that doesn’t cheat and whattdya got?

A bunch of losing chumps. I’m totally digging the NFL smacking the Pats around all year long!

    ===
And yet, no one has ever publicly caught NEP except on a technicality in 2007 about filming location.

  263. This is like reporting that tomorrow the sun is expected to rise.

Of course teams take extra precautions against known cheaters, they would be fools not to.

  264. It would be naive for the haters to think that other teams do not try to steal signs or push the boundaries. All teams make tapes which is allowed.

My guess is this will come out sooner or later.

  265. Hilarious stuff!!! Hoodie is in everyone’s head!! Funny how the espn piece is full of anonymous owners and former pats coaches and players, but not ONE has the stones to put their name on it!!! Sounds like EsPn fiction to me…

  266. I’m just not surprised…I’ve been watching football since the late 80’s, and when Mr Belichek coached in the 90’s. And Bill had almost the same staff as he did with the Patriots…Seriously, that run n shoot would destroy him and he’d get out coached by all the coaches in his division. Same guy that paid Andre Rison a zillion dollars…Same guy that got rid of Kosar, Eric Metcalf lol. He had no clue how to direct or manage personell. Probably the worse head coach in the AFC.

Then he gets back with the Jets via Parcells. This guy can coach defense now, they get to the AFC championship and lose to the eventual Super Bowl champions Broncos. Hmm…can’t debunk Elway I guess neither..

Then…He gets with Patriots and inherits above average talent, and they go 5-11. Next year, they acquire a 6th round pick QB, 9/11 happens, and we’re all morons, because we believe all this. These guys went from losers to winners practically over night with the same 5-11 team and a 6th round QB.

The only coaches HE CAN’T BEAT are ones that has coached with him or with Parcells. Hmmm.

Maybe they should interview Coughlin on how or what he does to prepare against New England, because a very inconsistent offense seems to be awesome against a New England defense when they play…Maybe, because oh, that defense has no awareness at all and is playing a Giants offense straight up instead of having 50, 75, or higher of a percentage knowledge of plays via signals..

And I’m not surprised players and coaches covered this up, or even commissioners for that matter. No one wins when a corrupt business such as the NFL gets exposed for cover ups, scandels and wwe like entertainment for those to see..

So, IMO…Goodel needs to go, and the Patriots should be expelled from post season play for each of the years they cheated. Yes, meaningless games for 3 years. Those early years IMO are so tainted you got to do it.

Hilarious stuff!!! Hoodie is in everyone’s head!! Funny how the espn piece is full of anonymous owners and former pats coaches and players, but not ONE has the stones to put their name on it!!! Sounds like EsPn fiction to me…
————————————————- If you are going to post, at least get your facts straight!!! ESPN posted the first article, not this one! Sports Illustrated wrote this one…lol…..I actually see a lot of good things coming from all this! Brady, BB, and the entire organization will be under a microscope. More people are talking about the cheating culture in NE! The Pats will be caught, yet again. Last, but not least, you can bet Tommy won’t whine for a flag and the refs throw one. This is not over and the Pats can’t blame ESPN on this one….lol….Other teams are sick of the cheating!

    ———————————————
Go watch 3 games to glory 3. There is a director’s track with a few Pats players doing play by play.
Watch the last 3 minutes of that game. The Pats players are laughing their butts off at the lack of urgency by the Eagles Offense.

  270. I can’t tell if the new NFL motto is “If you can’t beat them, accuse them.”, or “If you can’t beat them, blame them.”

    Either one works, I guess.

  271. Cowboys Head Coach Jimmy Johnson filmed signals exactly the same as Bill Belichick. Yet the new ESPN story claims Belichick invented the system. Ridiculous:

Jimmy Johnson thinks Spygate is overblown in this WFAN interview during Super Bowl week in 2008. It actually dates back to September of 2007. Regardless, it’s still interesting to note how commonplace former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson feels the use of cameras is by NFL teams. He admits he used them to steal signs all the time.

Q: How about the spying thing Jimmy. You’re a coach does that bother you what Belichick did?
JJ: Oh please. I’ve said it on our show. Eighteen years ago a scout for the Chiefs told me what they did, and he said what you need to do is just take your camera and you go and zoom in on the signal caller and that way you can sync it up. The problem is that if they’re not on the press box side you can’t do it from the press box, you have to do it from the sideline. This was 18 years ago. Q: You think the NFL came down too hard on them? JJ: No, no, I said it on the show. He was wrong for doing it for the simple reason that the league knew this was going on not just in New England but around the league. And the league sent out the memorandum to all of the teams saying you cannot do this. And so that’s when Bill Belichick was wrong. After he got the memorandum saying don’t do it any more, he did it.
Q: Did you ever steal signals? JJ: Oh in a heartbeat, yeah. Yes I did. Q: Via video, Jimmy? Or no? JJ: Oh yeah, I did it with video and so did a lot of other teams in the league. Just to make sure that you could study it and take your time, because you’re going to play the other team the second time around. But a lot of coaches did it, this was commonplace. Q: But did you do it by taping the signal caller? JJ: Yeah. Q: Oh you did. JJ: That’s what I’m saying. I was saying one of Marty Schottenheimer’s scouts, Mark Hatley, who has passed away now, Mark told me that’s how they did it, and Howard Mudd their offensive line coach with Kansas City, who now coaches for Tony Dungy, he was the best in the entire league at stealing signals. Q: Where’d you put your guy who was videotaping? Where was he? JJ: My guy was up with my camera crew in the press box. So you’d just put an extra camera up with your camera crew in the press box who zoomed in on the signal callers. That’s the best way to do it, but anyway you can’t always do that because the press box camera crew might be on the same side as the opposing team. If they’re on the same side as the opposing team that’s when you need to do it from the sideline.

    Lord Manning 1 Super Bowl

    Brady: 0 Super Bowls

    Wipe the Patriots slate clean

18 stands above the fray, clean as a whistle.

Brady is equal parts Bonds and Armstrong.
    ——————————
Wake up Dorothy, you’re not in the land of Oz anymore. Time to come back to reality crybaby nation.

  273. No wonder some pats fans here are so uninformed. They boycott sports outlets because their tinfoil hats won’t allow it. Add SI to the list.

  274. I always wondered what function this shadowy Ernie Adams character performed. He’s not a scout, doesn’t manage personnel and doesn’t diagram a single play. Then, after reading a couple articles in the past, it became clear: he’s the Patriots Director of Cheating. It fits, too, with the photographic memory and the translating of Spygate video into easy-to-read cards that ID every other team’s signals.

Forget Brady, he’s the guy that Goodell should be investigating. Frankly he ought to be banned.

By the way, what new conspiracy angle are you Pats fans gonna invent now that somebody else besides ESPN has chimed in with the reporting?

Oh and for the guy who posted the Jimmy Johnson interview, it’s a well-known fact how buddy-buddy he is with Belichick. Believe me, if JJ were still coaching and had a dog in the hunt, he’d be screaming bloody murder about New England.

  275. 60 Minutes Sports just aired a scathing critique of Goodell and the NFL and an exoneration of Tom Brady. Yes, I said exoneration.

PFT needs to link to the video or transcript. Now I know why the NFL and ESPN are going so hard with the revisionist history.

  276. Wahhhhh!!!!! No Super Bowls for you, Patriots! I “wished” them away, so….take that!

    —————————

…hey buddy, I just checked. Yup–they’re all still there. Too bad for you–pretend time is over now. Nighty night.

Time for one of your nightmares where Belichick and Brady are comin’ for ya! Get ready for a visit!

Giants don’t worry about the Pats cheating ways, we just go out and beat them.

    ——————–

Yes, once every ten years or so when they make the playoffs. The Patriots are good every year.

  278. I guess facing one’s own failure is just too much for people to deal with. It always has to be the other guy who was the cheater.

The sad thing is that this morass has grown out of control because of the incompetent in charge. Railroading the Patriots to make owners happy hasn’t helped him very much.

And he’s created an incredibly large number of virulently angry fans, people angry for no good reason whatsoever. What happens if this turns violent?

    ===============
This statement is even more pathetic than Manning’s 9 – one and done playoff trips.

  280. Belichek could never stop Neil oddonell, Warren moon, and Boomer Esiason. These were qbs in his division when he was with the Browns. Couldn’t stop jim kelly in the Super Bowl, it took a ball control scheme from parcells and coughlin. Couldn’t stop Elway in the playoff game jets/Broncos in 98. Couldn’t stop no one in his division his first year as coach in New England. But all of a sudden this guy can stop with worse players Kurt Warner, Peyton Manning, Donavon Mcnab, Big Ben, etc?? Seriously I guess they got so much better in a league that was supposed to be watered down parity since the Cowboys dynasties.

He’s been a loser until he started doing this. Plain and simple. A losing record. If the entire NFL taped other teams, great, but the Patriots habitually took it to an entirely different, probly insulting level due to this mans desperation of trying to not get fired anymore.

Don’t take away the sb’s. But I think 3 years no post season play would hit this team hard.

The commissioner should have disqualified them for post season play in 2007, but he blew it and blew it again. He must go

  281. Try using some logic. If any of these teams that have scanned locker room for bugs, searched hotel and locker room trash barrels, complained about communications system (acknowledged to be owned by NFL, not team, and confirmed by majority of coaches to be a standard occurrence in all stadiums), don’t you think someone would produce hard evidence ? Where are the bugs ? Where are the play sheets ? And doesn’t everyone see that the reports on Spygate came out on the same day from SI and ESPN ? Coincidence ? I think not….smells like the NFL office to me.

  282. No one can say that Belechik was totally unsuccessful as an NFL coach before he landed with Brady & the Patriots. He was the linebackers coach for the NY Giants who engineered the dominating defense of Harry Carson, Lawrence Taylor, Carl Banks, and Pepper Johnson in the 1980’s. Those teams won two super bowls on the strength of their defense.

    ——–
It was BBs gameplan that did in fact stop Kelly in the SB. That game plan resides in the HOf. That was Bill, not Coughlin who was a WR coach.
But anyone that knows anything about football shouldnt judge anyone for what they did in Cleveland. But I believe the last time the Browns won a play off game, BB was the coach. He brought them from pathetic to having the #1,D,,Talk of him being a massive failure there is way off. They were on their way when Modell decided to move them

  284. The more time these teams spend avoiding any spying, whether real or imagined, is less time they spend preparing to beat the Patriots.
