Chiefs place offensive lineman Paul Fanaika on injured reserve

We’re not even to game day, and teams are already running into injury problems.

According to Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star, the Chiefs have placed offensive lineman Paul Fanaika on injured reserve.

Fanaika was apparently injured at some point this week, after they made their final cuts to a 53-man roster.

He started at right tackle in the preseason when Eric Fisher was injured, but was a depth player once everyone was well. The Chiefs signed him this offseason to a three-year deal, bringing him in from Arizona. He entered the league as a seventh-round pick of the Eagles, when Andy Reid coached there.

To replace him on the roster, they’ve brought back linebacker Dezman Moses, who was released when they claimed tight end Brian Parker off waivers from the Chargers.

  1. Mystery IR…they signed Jah Reid and suddenly Fanaika, who looked terrible in pre-season, is put on IR. Also, as it just so happens, the Chiefs can save money by releasing him next year but would have lost money by releasing him this year. Hmmmm.

Fanaika did decent at RT not terrible this preseason. And Chiefs would save money cutting him now opposed to IR… Though it does seem odd nothing has been said about the injury.

  3. Gabe has this one figured correctly. Fanaika is an $8 million dollar bust. Besides, who wants an offensive lineman that the Cardinals make available? If you can’t play line for AZ, you don’t belong.

It’ll be curious to see how the Canadian doctor and El Busto do blocking J.J. Watt for K.C. If Fisher can hold out Watt, I’ll take back the El Busto tag.

  4. Paul was a guy we never really saw in AZ play. He made the team year after year, but didn’t make the field on game days. I was highly interested to see how he was doing…sad that he’s hurt. I wish him the best.
