Raiders sign Aldon Smith, who’s eligible to play Sunday

The Raiders signed talented but troubled linebacker Aldon Smith to a one-year deal Friday, giving Smith a possible chance to rejuvenate his career.

Smith served a nine-game NFL suspension last year and is subject to eventual league discipline — as well as possible jail time — for his August arrest on DUI and hit-and-run charges, so it’s no guarantee he’ll play at all in 2015.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Smith is eligible to play Sunday, and his availability will depend on his conditioning.

The 49ers released Smith the day after the arrest, his third DUI-related arrest since 2012.

“This organization has tried very hard to help Aldon fight his issues,” a 49ers statement about Smith’s release said. “Although he is no longer a member of this team, our support and concern for him will continue.”

Interestingly, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Smith had other at least three other teams interested in signing him. The one-year deal means Smith could be an unrestricted free agent next spring.

Smith has 44 career sacks but has played in just 18 games over the last two seasons. He was second in the NFL with 19.5 sacks in 2012.

  1. This guys got a rap sheet a mile long and gets chance after chance, another much shorter player can’t get another chance years after making a single mistake.

  2. Being the Raiders, I am sure the deal includes a healthy signing bonus which he will collect without ever playing a single snap for them.

  3. If he gets time on the field it’s going to be huge for the Raiders D. Mack is already showing signs of excellence this year and now both sides of the line would be stacked. How long before he’ll be able to play is the question. Instantly turns the Oakland D into a top 10.

  4. Aldon Smith Khalil Mack Mario Edwards and Dan Williams is a killer D-Line rotation. Oakland who I got 6-10 (most of the losses will be less than 7 points) are gonna be a tough outing. This team is really moving in a good direction. Here’s hoping they can provide Smith a lot of help and he can stay the right path. What a steal for them if he can play well.

  5. It’s about time the Raiders realized what used to make them great. Nothing ventured…
    “Just win baby”

  6. Kind of a headscratcher here. Waste a roster spot on a guy who probably won’t play 16 games when we really need corner help. What am I missing here, Raider Nation?

  7. That’s interesting. Seems to go against their desire for ‘good character’ people on the team. But, if he’s allowed to play (and gets/keeps his personal life in order), this will be one scary front seven.

  8. Del Rio and Norton JR will monitor his actions closely and will guide/mentor the young and talented All-Pro rusher.

    Long live Al Davis!

Mack and Smith together. Manning, Rivers, and Smith is in trouble this year.

Which I’m sure you’ve been hoping for years.

Besides, you think Smith just walks back into football? Nuh uh.

  10. Good signing by the Raiders and for Smith. Smith is still young and can add a lot to the d-line. Because he’s playing for a new big contract, he’ll be highly motivated to be productive.

I’m sure some holier-than-thou rival fans will try to flame this signing and to this I would say: Yes, he’s had a history of DUIs but that is not uncommon in the league and none of them resulted in injury to others. If Smith had been culpable of taking another’s life while driving drunk (like Leonard Little) then I would be against the signing. And DUI is nothing comparable to domestic violence or dog-killing.

  11. I still don’t think this guy plays another down in the NFL. I can’t believe anyone (even the Raiders) signed him.

  12. SCARY…if he makes it to the field that is a problem…I hope Aldon gets his non football life in order, that’s the one that really matters.

  13. This is so out there.

    1) When will the suspension be served?
    2) How many games will it be?
    3) After this year he will be a free agent, who does he sign with then?

Raiders must think he will be able to play enough this year to make it worth while right? Unless its a favor to the niners to keep him in town so they can keep tabs and they can re-sign him after the season ends?

  14. Here’s hoping that he plays this season. Would love to see him teamed up with Mack/Edwards/Williams and Tuck. AFC QB’s are in trouble!

  15. Oakland is smart. Smith’s lawyers will push the dui out until after this season. Smith will get suspended for next year. Problem is Smith can’t be trusted. Hope he doesn’t do any harm to anybody. Oakland’s PR can’t get any worse can it.

  16. Not sure how it works if he’s suspended for the year. I would imagine the fact they signed him anyway would give them the chance to use the franchise tag on him next off-season and keep him from hitting FA. For a minimum deal as long as you have the cap space that could be considered a smart move anyway. Like buying an extra draft pick in next year’s draft. Except there is no question that the guy can produce. As long as he’s on the field, that is.

  17. 49ers let him go because he can’t stay out of legal trouble…and then the Raiders pick him up….yet I don’t see a single word about the damage it is going to do to the Raider’s image.

  18. How is he not suspended? DUI hit and run. The league doesn’t need to wait for the court. Suspend his butt for conduct detrimental. This isn’t a Brady witch hunt, this guy is actually guilty.

  19. “Great to have you on board Aldon, now practice is at 11 tomorrow and you can park in the…better yet, we’ll send a cab to come pick you up!”

  20. If he’s not under contract to a team he’s not an NFL employee. Not sure they can suspend him until he signs a contract.

  21. Not so sure about this from Aldon Smith’s perspective. He could have benefited greatly from a change of scenery and a new group of friends.

  22. wow talk about a total Al Davis type of signing.

I just hope they didnt pay him to much since he probably wont be playing.

but if he can turn his life around and just focus on football. man him and mack together could be doom for QBs.

  23. That is a smart move. I am glad he found a new team. I am also glad that his new team is not a division rival of the 49ers. I think the Niners gave up on him too soon. They could have gotten a 7th round pick by trading him, and they would also have control over which team he is traded to. Hit and run is not a serious crime, and the DUI part is not supported by a field sobriety test. The San Jose police basically threw the book at the guy. It is likely that he may not even face a trial and may only have to perform community work for hitting a parked car and walking away.

  24. As a 49ers fans, I’m just glad he didnt go to the Cowboys or Seahawks, tbh.

Raiders arent going anywhere for at least a few years. This does not put them ahead of the Broncos, Chiefs or even Chargers for that matter.

He’ll last one year (with a partial suspension) then go somewhere else, maybe back to the Niners.

  25. Now I’m sure all of those Raiders fans who lambasted the Niners because of Smith feel differently now that he’s on their team.

One-year deal. Like it matters. He won’t make it through the season without getting suspended again.

  26. Mack had all of 0 sacks last year. Zip. Zilch. Nada. He was also already legendary and freakish by the end of his first pre-season.

Conversely, both Von Miller and Aldon Smith tallied double digit takedowns in their respective rookie years.

Until proven otherwise, the Raiders added a bookend. They do not, as of yet, have bookendS.

  27. OK, so we trade Sio Moore due to work ethic issues, and sign Aldon Smith? If we think we have a positive and supportive environment for Smith to flourish in, how come we didn’t believe we could help Sio grow up?
Sure, if Smith stays clean, and plays up to his talent, this is huge. But can we count on that? Is Kenny Norton going to house him? SMH
This move also shows the power shift from Reggie to Jack…

  28. The way I understood it , and anybody can correct me if I am wrong, but the hit and run occurred in a parking lot. Aldon Smith was not even aware that he hit the car while backing up which resulted in no damage to either car. Later came a claim from the car parked next to him this it was scratched by Smith’s car door when he opened his door. Smith’s car had no damage whats so ever to his door, and the other car claimed it had a small scratch. Smith left unknowing, and returned later on foot, where he was given a DUI…(while on foot.) My point is time will tell, but have a hard time thinking he will be guilty of any of this…..

As far as Raiders, I am happy to get him, but am somewhat shock that Reggie went out of his comfort zone of choir boys.

when you saw the run on backers in the draft, didn’t you think maybe the hip injury was worse than what they were saying…..after all Sio couldn’t practice all camp.

    3 DUI’s!?!

How is this criminal even free?
Because fool, a DUI is a traffic infraction, not a crime.

  31. Funny the Raiders have been irrelevant for a decade yet they still draw all the haters out on every column that is written about them. If you talk about them so much you must be a fan

  32. @ raiderman81

WOW! Mack. Smith. Tuck. Williams… WOW that D line just got real

The D-line was already looking decent. The problem is Smith will likely be suspended, and he brings a major distraction to the team as a knucklehead with multiple
    run-ins with the law.

SO SURPRISED the Raiders signed this guy. It is completely out of character for them to sign a guy like this……. ; 0

  33. Nice! And he is playing THIS week! Raiders D just got better. This helps the secondary as well. I see Woodson blitzing and getting a bunch of sacks cause teams are worried about Mack and Smith. Watchout Peyton, Alex, and Philip, who are your backups?

  34. Typical Raider haters. Reggie has signed clean cut guys since he’s been there. Why not take a chance of an extremely young and talented player with little risk if things don’t work out? You don’t need 53 angels on the team. Mack + Smith = potential havoc on defense!

  35. RaiderJon when you have a great pass rush you don’t need elite corners just corners to disrupt routes.
The NFL passing game is about timing, Mess that up and a team will struggle

  36. Good Luck Aldon! If the Lions didn’t sign you, I was hoping my 2nd favorite team would, Da Raidahs

  37. For those saying, “This is so Oakland,” name the last time the Raiders signed a problem child? You can’t name one because they don’t do it anymore.

This is perfect. He’s an idiot, and they’ll pay him not to play.

He’s done some silly things off the field but on-the-field he’s more than comparable in production to Justin Houston. Chief fans can deny it all they want, but the facts don’t lie:

Aldon Smith – 49.5 sacks in 58 games (50 regular season, 8 playoffs)

Justin Houston – 49.5 sacks in 60 games (59 regular season, 1 playoffs)

He had four sacks, 10 hits, 40 hurries, and 61 tackles last year. Linebackers do play run defense.

  40. I can people celebrate this? Oh yeah, the Church of Football. Take responsibility for yourself, it’s not up to others to constantly save your from your own stupidty and arrogance.

  41. Raider fans who ripped the Cowboys over Greg Hardy??? Now it’s a great pick up when it’s their team, right?

  42. Raider fans who ripped the Cowboys over Greg Hardy??? Now it’s a great pick up when it’s their team, right?
Please! Comparing dependency issues to putting your hand on a woman. smh

  43. Yep Hardy and Aldon sound the same:

On May 13, 2014, Hardy was arrested for assault and communicating threats, after he was alleged to have assaulted an ex-girlfriend by grabbing her, throwing her into furniture, strangling her, and threatening to kill her. On July 15, a judge found him guilty of assaulting a female and communicating threats, and sentenced to him 18 months probation, suspending a 60 day jail sentence
