Coaches say headset problems happen often outside New England

AP

When the Steelers’ coaches headsets malfunctioned on Thursday night in New England, it was treated by some as evidence of cheating by the Patriots. But several NFL head coaches said on Friday that in reality, headset problems are commonplace around the league, and not just in New England.

“It’s a league problem. It’s wherever,” said Panthers coach Ron Rivera. “It will go out right in the middle and not just here or in New England or in San Francisco, but it could go out in a critical time.”

Said Texans coach Bill O’Brien: “It happened in Dallas, it happens here, it happens wherever I’ve been.”

Said Eagles coach Chip Kelly: “I’ve heard a lot of things on the headsets, I think there’s a lot of frequency issues some places. I’ve heard air traffic control and a lot of different things.”

Said Cowboys coach Jason Garrett: “That’s certainly been a part of having to deal with game day situations, throughout my career as a player and a coach.”

Said Jets coach Todd Bowles: “It’s happened a bunch of other places. There have been times when the headsets have gone out, it wasn’t New England, I can’t remember the places we’ve had it, but we’ve had some of those headset problems.”

Said Lions coach Jim Caldwell: “It happens sometimes, sometimes there are quirks and technology is not always perfect. Things pop up. The problem is if you’re not prepared for it. If you’re not prepared for it, you’re going to have some issues.”

On Friday morning, it appeared that the NFL was about to have another scandal on its hands in the form of “Headsetgate.” But as Friday wore on, it began to look more like the NFL just has a problem common in a lot of workplaces: The communications technology doesn’t always work properly.

  1. Why is the communications, coach to coach anyway, not hard wired? It seems like that would be more secure and more stable, at least employed as a backup system. It probably shouldn’t be a surprise the sideline communication systems often don’t work when we see refs mics often don’t.

That said, the Steelers seemed to question the timing of the communications working and not working. Working when the Pats had the ball, not working when the Steelers had the ball, and working when league reps went to check with the Pats sideline, not working again after they left.

  2. People jump to conclusions without any proof of wrong doing. Its the new way.

Haters gonna hate and say they still believe the Pats did it. Guess what, they’re all wrong and stupid.

  3. And as the NFL will find out this year, the ideal gas law exists outside of New England as well…

  4. Even the rain on Thursday night was NE’s cheating tactics.. They play well in rain than other teams and hence cheated the league and created rain #raingate

    Geezzzzeeeeeee…..

  5. The long-term effect of Deflategate will be to make every Belichick win on the field questionable. The league, most of it, wants Belichick’s head, but they’ll settle for his reputation.

Be prepared for many more routine issues to get become mini scandals just because Belichick happened to be in the same time zone that day.

  6. This was a really cheap and nasty move by Tomlin to pile on the Patriots. He’s been around a while and I’d be shocked if he believes this only happens in New England. This is all from a coach who deliberately tripped an opposing runner on the sidelines during a play (with only a slap on the wrist by the NFL). Sportsmanship and integrity are only a catch phrase to him. Enjoy third place this year Mike.

  7. Sounds a lot like the NFL’s ” Recording hand signals doesn’t help you” campaign! I’m sure the truth will come out in 2022. This league has a massive credibility problem.

  8. Unfortunately, in a way the damage is already done with the way the situation was handled. Those that don’t pay close enough attention already have it in their heads that the Pats cheated YET AGAIN. Buckle up, it’s going to be a long season accusations every week as long as the Pats win.

  9. Caldwell said it best. If your not prepared its a problem. The best teams in the league are the most prepared. The other teams either try to work harder and prepare better or make excuses.

Belichick said as much post game…We look at it as something you have to be ready for every week, and we practice it. Home, away – I don’t really think there is any common denominator on that. I’d just say, kind of tying this in with a couple things from last week or earlier in the week, I just think overall it’s kind of sad, really, to see some stories written that obviously have an agenda to them with misinformation and anonymous-type comments and writing about warm drinks and trash cans and stuff like that. I think it’s just sad commentary and it’s gone to a pretty low level. It’s sunk pretty deep. First of all, let’s say that I think that our program here is built on competition and trying to improve every day and trying to work hard, and it’s not built on excuses.”

  10. Tomlin should be fined by the Steelers, not for his comments but for the charge of conduct unbecoming of an NFL coach because he did not prepare his team for this contingency. He may have cost them the game and then he had that cowardly reaction to blame New England to try to cover his azz. What a lowlife.

  11. When asked how they would explain this to Trip Tomlin, the response was simply “can’t fix stupid”

  12. Tomlin’s excuse making after losing the other night was similar to Jim Harbaugh’s after the AFCCG.

If BB really isn’t doing anything wrong and he’s upsetting these coaches that much, then maybe BB really IS getting inside their heads which makes it even HARDER to beat him which frustrates them MORE, which makes it even HARDER to win…soooo good luck with all THAT fellas.

  13. The NFL is clearly lining up the coaches to defend the Patriots even thought they are documented cheaters. Hard to take, I know, that you can be world champions and documented cheaters at the same time. Sad but true.

  14. My lord! I don’t Tomlinson could look any more like a baby if he tried! To have coaches come out the very next day and say that basically he wasn’t prepared??? Lol!

  15. This obviously proves that Belichick is so powerful and will stop at nothing to cheat. His cheating network reaches into cities and games he is not involved with. Impressive!

And just wait until November when the temperatured drop and everyone in the northern hemisphere has their car tires magically deflated by Brady and his minions.

These guys will stop at nothing!

  16. That’s fine, but the Pats no longer get the benefit of the doubt. They have worked hard to earn every bit of skepticism that comes their way, and they deserve it.

  17. More current and past head coaches should be defending Bill. Kudos to the ones the have, especially young coaches likes Bowles who has an owner that hates the Patriots.

  18. The great Bill Walsh was accused many times of screwing with the headsets. It amazes me how you haters think New England is the only team that does it. What is even funnier is that the NFL controls the communications systems and not the teams like they did when Bill Walsh coached the 49ers. It amazes me how self righteous hypocrites comment on the Patriot’s here. Almost every team has a history of cheating yet you all feel the right to condemn the Patriots when all you have is spygate. Check the youtube video of John Madden laughing about it and how teams tape signals Was there any proof of locker rooms being bugged? NFL teams have security travel with them so if a player is dumb enough to leave a play list behind, the teams security is surely not going to let anybody just walk into the teams locker room and leave them unattended. You are really a sad group of people who are so hypocritical it is pathetic. When you can get a story with proof of the wrong doing and not accusations from unnamed sources then say something. I know you don’t like to deal in facts but accusations are not proof!
I know the haters answers I will get: typical Patriot excuse saying that is ok to cheat because other teams do to!
My response to that is stop acting like self righteous hypocrites when your own team has cheated. Another words, People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones! Beat them on the field and stop acting like little children and cry CHEATERS when they beat you. It’s called taking your loss like a man!

  19. I suspect the Rooneys had a talk with Tomlin. They might forgive his outbursts and various, ah, missteps if the team were dominant, but the Steelers have been very uneven during his tenure and looked unready to play Thursday night. If they lose at home to the Ravens this year again he could be in trouble.

  20. I hope the Patriot’s don’t go over the salary cap by paying too much rent for being in so many people’s heads!
This just in, Dan Patrick reporting that the Patriot’s are responsible for global warming. Hire Ted Wells Rog, the man behind all “Independent” investigations!

  21. We just frustrate the heck out of every team because we keep kicking their butts on the field. Whiners.

The next team who loses to the Pats and doesn’t complain, just gives credit to the great team that beat them should make headlines. Not this stuff.

  22. Tomlin got severely out coached, so he took a play out of the NFL PR book and needed a red herring.

  23. New England is the only place it seems to happen on a regular basis, and at crucial times in the game.

  24. weepingjebus says:

I suspect the Rooneys had a talk with Tomlin.

    ————————————————-

Prove it, numbnuts. You know, the way Pats fans insist on proof of everything.

    Hypocrite.

  25. Where are all the knuckleheads who immediately went to the knee jerk “the Patriots cheated” now that the NFL has completely cleared them of any involvement, which sane people already knew?

The problem is so many low intelligence people read headlines and don’t care about facts.

  26. Use hard wired headsets. I do the lighting for a rock band that tours internationally and use the same type of comm systems to talk to my spotlight operators. I always demand wired headsets because wireless almost always screw up.

There used to be a dedicated band for wireless mics and headsets that a few years ago Congress, in their wisdom, sold off to the mobile phone companies and moved mics and headsets into the consumer band.

The same band that everyone’s cell phone and numerous other devices are operating in. Anybody ever never had trouble once in a while with their cells ? Of course not we all do. Because the wireless bands are a freaking mess.

Any team that doesn’t want these problems needs to use hardwired headsets, period.

Furthermore, the league is aware of this because they were part of a lobbying group that consisted of the NFL, broadway theaters, huge concert promoter Live Nation and an association of churches that all use tons of wireless and did their best to block Congress selling the dedicated frequencies.

This is not a Patriots issue this is an issue for every person who uses cells or wireless of any type.

  27. chris mortenson reports the patriots cheat in 11 of every 12 stadiums they play to confuse the perception they cheat only at gillette, that’s a standard black ops diversion tactic

  28. So in other words Tomlin wasn’t prepared. Shocker.

Not sure why he needs the headset anyway. Never utters a word into it. In fact, he consults no one during a game and it seems no one asks his opinion either.

Watch the Steelers next time. He doesn’t do anything during a game. Steelers need a real HC.

  29. do the simple thing and regress. Ban all this electronic stuff and go back to the old school where it’s the players on the field and the pre-game coaching that matters. leave all the headset stuff to the teenagers watching the game at home.

  30. Maybe the Competition Committee should focus on fixing the headset problems instead of honoring the complaints of teams like the Colts and Ravens about plays that are legal according to the rule book.

  31. The issue isn’t whether it has happened from time to time elsewhere. No one should claim it doesn’t.

The issue is how often it has happened elsewhere, as compared to NE.

    Tomlin got severely out coached…

I don’t really know if Tomlin has a history of being an excuse making whiner but he certainly hit an excuse making whining low note after Thursday’s game.

As far as the Coaching in the game is concerned, this Pats fan saw that there is plenty of room for improvement from players and the coaches on the Steelers and Patriots. Fortunately that is not unexpected this early in the season.

  33. The headsets picked up southwest airline communications at a Raiders game a while back. This was mentioned on Boston sports Radio yesterday.

  34. Of course it is. And NE known for ever changing bad weather and Foxborough which is like middle of nowhere, I can understand if reception is worse than places like Miami or even Baltimore. All coaches know that and prepare for it. But Tomlin and the Steelers wanted to ride the anti-Patriots wave and deter attention away from their embarrassing play calling so it was cool for them to imply the Patriots was manipulating it. Shame on them. Sorry, but they don’t deserve to be holding he Lombardi trophy. I don’t see Lombardi making excuses for poor play.

  35. It is weird. They have total control over the stadiums and the equipment but cannot seem to get a consistent, quality signal. The tech exists. I never have these types of problems with my cell phone. I guess the NFL has to care about it enough to spend money on something other than Mickey Mouse style walkie-talkies.

  36. life long Pats fan that has nothing but respect for the Steelers- my first memories of watching football was those scary looking dudes back in the 70;s….imo only thing better than Pats/Steelers is Pats vs Jughead lol. They deserve better than the clown HC they have now, but unfortunately the Rooneys tend to stick with their HC as long as the HC wants to be there. Ironic I guess is the “Rooney rule” means they’re stuck with this un prepared clueless dolt. You never heard Noll or Cowher making excuses and Cowher lost 2 huge games to the Pats during the “Spygate” years

  37. People should lay off Tomlin. He is a competetive guy and was fired up after a loss. I have never seen him be one to make excuses. As a Pats fan I have allways had a lot of respect for him. While I am not an expert I am sure there could be reasons why some stadiums have more issues with radio frequencies. It could be related to proximity to airports, military installations or othe communications businesses and towers. if you have ever listened to a radio during a near by thunder storm you know that weather can cause issues too.

  38. NFL should ask NASCAR how they do it, 43 different teams and as much support radio use, up to 200mph and a rough conditions but they don’t run in the rain

  39. all this headset stuff is to make the coaches more involved than they should be during the game. Leave the game to the players on the field and do a better job of coaching the other 6 days of the week. ban all this electronic stuff and the issue goes puff!

  40. Tomlin never “tripped” anyone. Tomlin never said that the Patriots had anything to do with the issue. Tomlin never blamed the loss on the headset failure. Patriots fans are now doing to the Steelers what the rest of the league did to the Patriots. Nice…

  41. The US military uses similar wireless communication. The difference is the military pays a premium to protect it from the elements and attack. Shouldn’t it be possible to have a dumbed down level of that protection vs only weather?

The NFL controls the frequencies, but no one controls the weather.

That’s right NASCAR doesn’t run in foul weather, but I would not be shocked if they didn’t have some frequency issues at times.

  42. Yes Tomlin did trip a Raven ball carrier. No he did not say Oats but he did say he always has the issue at Foxborough. Where do the Pats play? so the implication is there. Also pay attention the league exonerated the Pats yet the trolls are stil out there convinced of their truth and not the actual truth

  43. The NFL is getting what it deserves. They made such a big deal about air pressure in a football which they knew nothing about to create the whole deflategate issue. Now when anything happens this is what we are going to get, “the other team is cheating”. Don’t believe this will just be a Patriot issue, you will now see every team complaining and making accusations about the home teams. Nice job comish! Like I said the NFL is getting exactly what they deserve. What a joke.

Sounds like this happens a lot and you think with all the cash the NFL makes they could get top of the line equipment that always works.

  44. The league handles headset communications, not the teams. So I’m sure the league wanted to screw the Steelers and help the Patriots. I mean…look how much they have favored the Patriots these past 7 months.

    #getalife

  45. Ths NFL is in a ‘full court press’ to supress this story as much as possible. After all the effort & money the NFL spent scheming with Kraft & the judge to suppress the Patriots’ cheating from last year & get Shady-Brady back on the field for game 1, the last thing they want to start the season is to regress back into another “Patriots are Cheaters” discussion. Thier position is simply “OK, we all now know they are cheaters. So what? Deal with it so we can all MAKE MONEY” mentality. The NFL has successfully completed it’s transformation from a worthwhile sports event to a disgracefull, money grubbing, media frenzy, entertainment show. It is no longer a Sports Event…becasue that would require fairness be applied to the game, which does not exist any longer.

  46. I am waiting for some simpleton to start saying the Patriots cheated in those games too even though they didn’t play and weren’t in the city.

  47. Tomlin never “tripped” anyone. Tomlin never said that the Patriots had anything to do with the issue. Tomlin never blamed the loss on the headset failure. Patriots fans are now doing to the Steelers what the rest of the league did to the Patriots. Nice…

    —————–

What color is the sky in that world? Every one of those things did indeed happen PLUS Ben tried to call out the Patriots for cheating by performing an illegal defensive shift which there is no such thing. ,crybabies

  48. Of course these problems occur everywhere. I don’t care about the Patriots one way or another, but I know you can’t deflate balls, tape signals, tinker with headsets, and ride off with four Super Bowls. It’s completely absurd to think otherwise.

  49. A wired headset would fix all of crybaby Tomlins issues. No frequency issues and it would act as a leash to keep him off the field.

  50. Yes Tomlin did trip a Raven ball carrier

Funny how Frog Eyes Tomlin could do that but the Pats, for something that can’t EVEN BE PROVEN, get whacked a million dollars and a first round draft pick.

    This is all upside down.

  51. screw headsets, am I the only one who noticed it appeared to be raining harder when the steelers offence was on the field? Not sure how he did it but obviously BB was cheating, only pats fans cant see that, of course nothing will happen because goodell is krafts puppet.. or something?

  52. My hunch is Tomlin was still angry about Blount. As I recall Blout was getting any touches so he went to the locker room before a game ended. Steelers immediately waived him rather than suspending him. The Pats made the claim. Blount got a ring and the Steelers got nothing. Someone in Pittsburgh actually ran a story that the Patriots put Blount up to it. Never explained how the Pats would know that the Steelers would screw up and release him.

  53. Bill has a ham radio operator in the light house jamming signals for the visiting teams. But let’s keep that between us!!! Freakin trolls…….PATRIOT NATION LOVES THE HATE……BRING IT ON AS WE DRIVE FOR FIVE!!

  54. 6 months ago everyone was an expert on air pressure and how a football should feel, now we have experts on sideline clear com.

    Y’all are clueless.

    ———————————-

He didn’t trip anyone. He just got in his way.

  57. BB has a plan to make sure that it will be cold in December. Kraft intentionally built a stadium in the Northeast to take advantage of the cold.

They should move to a State where it’s 60 degrees and sunny, not TOO sunny, with no wind.

Brady should get 1 ball filled with that foam stuff they make nerf balls from. The other team should provide that and all other balls, drinks, towels and headphones.

Pats should only be allowed to bring Kleenex & Pampers for the other team’s use after the game.

The opposing team will also provide completely partial TV broadcast crews. What, oh never mind, they already have that.

  58. Tomlin tripped Jacoby Jones on live TV. It is not debatable.

I honestly can’t say I’m surprised that the same people who are paranoid and believe 100% in all the Pats conspiracy theories as sure as they are alive, also deny something they can see with their own eyes. lol

  59. League making BILLIONS with a B and they can’t afford endzone cameras and reliable headset technology. This is beyond pathetic. There are no excuses NFL, none! DO YOUR JOB!

  60. Our high school team here in rinky dink Maine uses hardwired headsets. Yes, I know it’s hard to believe we have electricity but one thing we don’t have is sissified coaches using headsets as an excuse for losing instead of growing a pair and admitting they were schooled by a superior coach and team.

    ======

Not a Squealer fan, like the Pats they cheated for their trophies but with steroids, but when Pats’ fans keep saying obviously false things they lose even more credibility (as if it’s possible).

Tomlin didn’t trip the return guy, he got in his way which allowed his guy to catch him.

Of course, like Belicheat and hair plugs, Pats fans are light on truth.

  62. We have the truth!

Headsets were turned off because there was a complaint that there was this high pitched whining sound coming from them.

  63. It was only treated as ‘evidence’ by the stupid and the gullible. The same ones that have never read the Wells Report and seen how laughable it truly is.

  64. Stepping into the field of play is cheating, whether or not he made contact, the guy hitched…What makes Tomlin a horses ass, is the fact he denied it. After we all saw it on video, not the act of stepping out onto the field, but looking at the jumbotron, and at the right time doing it..

  65. Gee, all 3 Pitt coaches were on the sideline, now this might seem archaic but why not just walk over to each other and talk IN PERSON!!!! We can’t even enjoy a win anymore without having to argue against all this crybaby accusations!!!

  66. The Patriots haven’t just been accused of the headset stuff, they’ve also been investigated for guess what… radio frequency shenanigans.

The from a few years ago:

“The league also was reviewing a possible violation into the number of radio frequencies the Patriots were using during Sunday’s game, sources said. The team did not have a satisfactory explanation when asked about possible irregularities in its communication setup during the game.”

That’s right, the Patriots couldn’t explain things, even with their and their fan bases’ normally vast knowledge of physics and electronics.

The league’s explanation, speaking of Ideal Gas Law kind of stuff, is bunk. They boast of having a 268 million military-grade encryption coded DIGITAL communications system. But the fact is, as any junior telco guy can tell you, is that it is IMPOSSIBLE for the grounding problems claimed by the league to have occurred in a digital system. Sorry no dice, no cigar. Your explanation is as scientifically lame as is your covering for the Patriots electronic hijinks yet again.

The Steelers couldn’t wait to get rid of Blount and saw him as a bad (puff puff smoke smoke!) influence on Bell. So your jealousy theory doesn’t really cut the mustard. It wasn’t just leaving the field early, there was a lot of other stuff he did.

Second of all, I happened to be listening to Boston radio a couple nights BEFORE they released Blount, and they were discussing what Belichick should do after the Stillers release Blount. The next day after the game, sure enough the Steelers cut him loose. I’ve always wondered, just how did they know this? Either someone had inside info or this was the luckiest speculation ever.

That’s why if you read my posts going back to last winter, I’ve said that Defllategate is the wrong scandal to look at. Forget that little shrunken balls stuff, the calls and texts they oughta be demanding are the ones between Blount and his former team up in New England.

If you think I’m bad, I know people who will tell you Blount and the Pats drummed up his bad behavior on purpose to get himself cut. Like purposely flubbing the ball the way he did in the Jets game, when he’d been sure-handed all year.
