Bears start strong, can’t keep up with the Packers

Those who thought the Packers would blow out the Bears today in Chicago were mistaken. The Bears came out strong and went toe-to-toe with the Packers.

But in the end, Aaron Rodgers was too much for Chicago’s defense, and Green Bay won 31-23.

Rodgers finished the game 18-for-23 for 189 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He easily out-played Jay Cutler, who was inaccurate for most of the game and threw away the Bears’ last, best chance when he had back-to-back overthrows in the end zone on third-and-goal and fourth-and-goal.

That’s not to say the Bears’ offense couldn’t do anything. Matt Forte had an outstanding day, rushing for 141 yards, and Forte’s second-quarter touchdown gave Chicago a 10-7 lead. A Robbie Gould field goal gave the Bears a 13-10 halftime lead, and even at the start of the fourth quarter it was a close game, 17-16 Packers.

Rodgers, however, engineered two fourth-quarter touchdown drives, and when the Bears finally scored again, it was with just 34 seconds left. The Packers recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal the win.

Green Bay entered this game as the favorite in the NFC North, and Green Bay remains the favorite in the NFC North. But the Bears showed something as well. They may be more competitive in the division than most people think.

  1. 1 Victory

0 allegations from opponent regarding dishonest or unfair game play in order to gain an advantage.

Packer Nation sleeps like a log once again.

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  2. The Bears Jay Cutler, Chicago’s gift to Green Bay, the gift that keeps on giving!

  3. Pack still has some weapons sans Jordy. Need our 2 other d-linemen back soon. We got skittles-boy coming into Lambeau next week and a mobile qb in Wilson. Better stiffen up the run-defense or it will be 1-1 after week2. Go Pack!

  4. Lovie, Trestman, and now Fox. No big difference as Cutler leads the way to another Green Bay victory.
When is Chicago going to get it that skill players make the difference and Chicago is very short on same, especially on defense?

  5. I was watching the game, and actually Cutler didn’t look as bad as he has in season’s past. A little gelling time in the new offense and the Bears may look somewhat competent. Sure, he sailed some balls and had a crucial pick, but there were lots of drops as well. Agreed with other posts that both defenses were lacking. Shields was brutal.

  6. This is going to be the story for the Bears a lot this year. Good gameplans, strong effort and relatively few mistakes but still an L in the end. With the least talented defense in the division and Cutler being Cutler, there isn’t a lot the new coaches will be able to get done this year.

  7. Bears played strong. Kudos.
We played just a bit better than mediocre. Offense looked alright and Jones looked great. Defense as usual gave them just about everything they wanted. Capers needs to go.
Overall a fun, hard fought game.
    Go Pack Go!

  8. Packers are 13-3 against the Bears in the Rodgers era, and Bear fans think this is a rivalry. Comical.

  9. Strange commentary,

Cutler wasn’t that bad… Forte was awesome on the ground but he dropped two easy catches.

One big one went right through his hands and hit him in the facemask… Did the writer or the posters watch the game?

  10. The Bears accounted themselves pretty well today, as I expected they would. John Fox is going to turn this team around sooner rather than later. I don’t picture them going to the Superbowl this year but I absolutely expect them to finish ahead of the Vikings.

  11. Packers=Rodgers. That’s it. Don’t delude yourselves into thinking it’s anything other than that. D stinks, Jones couldn’t hang onto a job with ANY other team. McCarthy is a fat joke. Just know that if it wasn’t for Aaron, you guys wouldn’t amount to a hill of beans.

  12. Loved the call after the timeout just before 2 minute warning to go for the end zone rather than running the ball. I assume it was Clements, but anyway good call. That’s the aggressive type of play calling that the Pack has lacked.
Thank you Giants for cutting James Jones.
Generally poor day by defense and special teams. But Matthews made a huge play, and at least they got the onside kick.
Chicago will need 2 or 3 good drafts and free agency periods before they can contend, but I could already see Fox has them headed in the right direction. They played hard and his teammates let Cutler know that they weren’t down on him.

  13. Victories on the road are always sweet.

(Except Soldier Field is kind of like Lambeau South.)

I believe the Packers tied the lifetime series with the Bears today! It’s been along time coming.

    Go Pack Go!

  14. Cutler didn’t lose this game. I’m not a fan but the Bears secondary sucked. Awful. Same old story. Blame Cutler and disregard the crap defense

  15. Things that killed the Bear’s chance: Two critical offsides penalties on G Vlad Ducasse, four passing plays on the goal line when they should have pounded the rock and Jay’s INT with 56 minutes behind him. Oh yea and the Bears WR’s couldn’t catch anything and the Packers caught everything Rodgers threw to them.

Overall, I was definitely not expecting the Bears to keep it that close. Packers are the most consistent team in the division for the past 10 years. Can’t expect the Bears to beat that team, but they looked a lot better than last year, that’s for sure! Good Game Packers, I know the fans are happy to see James Jones step right back in…

That’s pretty sad then of the Bears to not be able to stop one guy then, huh?

  18. Jimmy, I don’t know what game you were watching, but Soldier Field was a sea of blue and orange. It always is. Bear fans are every bit as committed as we Packer fans are.

My youngest stepson (a Bears fan) came over for the game today and we were actually discussing this very thing whenever the cameras showed the crowd.

  19. Pace needs to draft the hell out of CB and pass rushers next spring. Fuller and Ball are not starting caliber. Pernell McPhee and Jared Allen both looked like colossal wastes of money. Lack of impact at those positions plus the obligatory clutch Cutler meltdown were the difference.

  20. bassplucker, I don’t think Cutler melted down today. He threw the one pick, but only because Matthews saw what was coming and jumped it.

Another discussion my Bears fan stepson and I had was when they showed Jay standing at the sideline, clearly invested in the game, instead of sitting on the edge of the bench sulking. That was kinda new.

I’m telling you guys… there is reason for optimism in Chicago. It may not feel like it at the moment, but after the sting wears off and you look at the game more objectively, it should.

  21. The Packers started slow, but they did that a lot early in the last season as well. Thats the NFL regular seasn though and its back! The Phins had their hands full with Washington, and snuck away with a win, and the Colts and Seahawks lost to teams, I figure many had them beating.

It doesn’t matter how you get the Win in the regular season, as long as you have more than your division opponents.

  22. Bears did a good job of hiding limitations, made the most out of thin roster and contended for the most part. Cutler was consistent and converted 3rd downs, looks much improved to any “real” observer… Hats off to the coaching staff. Looking forward to more competitive games like this one by the Bears.

  23. The Bears accounted themselves pretty well today, as I expected they would. John Fox is going to turn this team around sooner rather than later. I don’t picture them going to the Superbowl this year but I absolutely expect them to finish ahead of the Vikings.

Funny. You post all week that the Vikings are not your rival. And the first chance you get you post about them. You’re all too predictable. I smell your fear.

  24. Hey Carl your onside kick recovery came a little late ,should have done it when pressure was on instead of choking it away !!!!!!!!!!!

  25. I didn’t see the game, but the updates I was getting from friends sounds like both defenses were horrendous. Rodgers out pointed another team. I’m not surprised. He will do that a lot in the regular season. It’s the playoffs where the Packers weaknesses come up (sans 1995 and 2010).

  26. Silly Conor… the point is, the Bears won’t finish last in the division this year. Nor will the Packers or the Lions. That only leaves one team… and it was much simpler to just type the name of that one team than to type out all this other gobbledegook in the hopes of making you happy.

But you go ahead and tell yourself whatever you need to. I figure you’re only going to be here for another 6 or 7 weeks anyhow. As soon as “that one team in the NFCN that isn’t the Bears, the Lions or the Packers” (there- happy now? )is mathematically eliminated, you’ll disappear… just like last year.

    You won’t be missed.

  27. @bigernmccracken,
Take any star player off of a team and the season will be in question. Whether it’s Rodgers, Peterson, Brady, Brees, Forte. Doesn’t matter. You’re a moron with your comment.

As for this game, our defense is awful. I didn’t think they’d be this bad. It’s early, so hopefully things improve. Otherwise, our offense looked fantastic as always. The bears are clearly better coached by Fox too. I was impressed with the Bears offense. Your defense, well, still sucked.

  28. WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY ABOUT US AND ONSIDES KICKS NOW?!?!?!
    ——
Good thing Jordy wasn’t out there…
    ——————————————-

    You mean Bostick of course.

  29. Sad sad small dog syndrome from a few fans of the Ex-Packers West. You really want to spend your short time inciting hate?

Is that why people in Minnesota stop talking football in-person once they find out you are a Packer fan? The vast majority of Chicago based fans held a mutual respect and at least had funny jabs to offer. Our true rivalry is clearly self-evident and full of rich history.

  30. Is it that hard to comprehend that defense across the league is lacking week one?? Teams have nothing to scheme off of and rules greatly favor offense in the modern NFL. Give it just two weeks of tape and teammates gelling at game speed and it’s a totally different game.

  31. The Bears were ready for this game. Hats off to coach Fox. It was a good rivalry game for a nationwide audience.

Never overlook the underdog whatever year these teams play. Always love the Packers/Bears games.

I always cheer for the Bears v. Lions and vikings.

The Bears should be moving up in every published Power Ranking.

And that “one team” you refer to, is the team that you Cheeseheads fear the most. And I don’t blame you. Your “D” stinks. . .majorly.

  33. So Matt Forte ran around all day and Bears still lost, kinda like playing the Vikings like when Adrian Beathison runs all day and they still lose.

Nobody “fears” the Vikings, especially the Packers or their fans. Why would we? You wish we did……because it would feed your ego. But we don’t. And the Packers D in 2014 was every bit as good as the Vikings. Fact.

Expect the same and get over yourselves.

  36. Cutler didn’t loose the game for us, but he sure didn’t help. Rodgers was simply better.

  37. The Bears will beat the Vikings if they play as well as they did today, and reduce the mental errors.

  38. Stellarperformance> Bears beating the vikings is like the Bears winning multiple superbowls soon! Give me a break or mind me saying “give your head a shake!”

  39. The red zone defense was huge today. They’ll fix the D-run in the coming weeks and once our O-line gets a better rythem our run game will be a lot better.
Viking fans that have the gall to post here and put down the Packers, are only here because they are scared. Well your only fooling your little boy self

  40. It is no coincidence that Favre had his best season by far in MN (even at age 40). As a Packer fan and part owner even I have to admit that if MN had Favre and Rodgers for 25 years they would have probably 6 rings easily.

    Lol. Ya. Right.

  42. It’s so cute when fans a team that can’t beat a team over .500 try to make fans of a perennial Playoff Powerhouse.

The Vikings are a terrible franchise.

The Packers are the most storied franchise in the NFL.

    These are facts.

  43. Was an entertaining game to watch. The Bears had a sound offensive game plan (good coaching as expected), Forte is a beast, and both Rodgers and Mathews remain game changers. Doesn’t look like any of the NFCN division games will be easy.

  44. Is it just me, or did Lacy look extra chubby and a little slow today? As part owner, I’m going to see if the team will allow me to consult with him about his daily caloric intake and workout regimen.

  45. This was a tune-up. No preseason action can prepare a team, especially a finesse team like the Packers, for the real season. The Bears let us get up to speed for real. R-E-L-A-X

  46. kinda boring game, but oh well. nobody had major injuries like a hand full of other games. chicago looked like they could pull off an upset but the game got away from them. would be nice if you guys could keep the vikings out of everything, but whatever.

they finally have a coach the figured out the best way to beat rodgers is to keep him on the sidelines, and it almost worked.

    was joe buck hungover?

  47. As a Packer fan I never expect a blow out in a game with the Bears. Usually this is a game that is hard fought and this one was as well.
To me the Bears have a future you can see that Fox had them ready to play and in my opinion he could get them on the right track.

Anyhow, it is always good to wake up on Monday morning the day after the Packers beat the Bears. The score could be 6-3 or 96-3 it doesn’t matter as long as they beat them.

  48. Coming from a fan and part owner of the Packers:

The Packers are who I thought they were. A soft defense, mediocre special teams, a chubby RB and Erin Rodgers. IF the Packers make the playoffs. There is zero chance they will win a game.

  49. Wins, losses, score don’t matter. It’s about the product on the field, as the cowboys/giants proved last night. Save some poor decision making by Giants on their last drive and a miraculous go-ahead td drive with 90 seconds left by Romo the game would have gone to the Giants. But anyone who watched the game saw the Cowboys dominate.

So what was the product on the field in GB vs Chi? Both defenses were atrocious and Cutler may be marginally improved, but it’s hard to tell as GB’s defense was, as noted, atrocious so it may be a mirage. GB was lucky to play CHI this week, against any competent offense they’d have lost. And don’t blame it on week 1, plenty of defenses played well this week.

  50. If I were a Bears fan, I would be very happy with the amount of moxie they played with. Cutler played better than the numbers indicate and they played hard for 60 minutes. I don’t think you could say that once in the Trestman era.

Typical slow start for the Packers…it’s become an annual event. Ground game looked better than usual at this time of year so that’s a plus. But man, that was one pathetic display of tackling and the penalties reminded me of 2008. Shields, Hyde and HaHa are three guys you wouldn’t think you would have to worry about and holy balls did they play bad.
