Report: Jets called about trade for Cousins after Geno’s broken jaw

Ryan Fitzpatrick will start at quarterback for the Jets against the Browns on Sunday afternoon, which wasn’t the Jets’ plan for Week One when camp got underway.

Geno Smith was expected to be the team’s starter, but a punch from IK Enemkpali broke his jaw and forced the Jets to move in a different direction. They’d traded for Fitzpatrick in the offseason to prepare for such a situation, although it reportedly wasn’t the only option they considered in the wake of Smith’s injury.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the team explored trades with other teams when they were unsure how long  and called the Redskins about making a deal for Kirk Cousins. Cousins was also thought to be a possible target for the Jets when they were in talks in January with Dan Quinn about becoming their head coach.

The Redskins said no, obviously, and their own questions about their presumed starting quarterback didn’t take long to surface in the preseason when Robert Griffin III’s concussion opened the door for coach Jay Gruden to name Cousins the “the starting quarterback in 2015.”

Smith has started doing some work in practice and is expected back in the coming weeks, leaving the Jets with Bryce Petty backing up Fitzpatrick until he’s back.

  1. They were willing to make the deal. A 4th rounder I heard. When Washington threw in RG3 as well the Jets dropped their offer to a 5th.

  2. so one turnover machine for another? even though ryan fitzpatrick is weak he’s better than those two.. jets need to eventually get a real qb.

    go raiders

  3. Cousins is overrated. Average NFL QB, yet so many teams are interested in him and the Redskins are running RG3 out of town who has so much more potential than Cousins. I just don’t get it.

  4. Why would anyone want to play for the Jets everyone in the tristate area knows the Jets are the B team in there own Stadium.

They are now and always will be the redheaded stepchild to the Giants

That’s still better then what RGIII AKA “The Best QB in the league” will be able to say after this season.

????? you mean teams prepare for there starting QB’S to get there jaws broke ?

  7. Petty has looked just horrid so Im not real shocked. Actually surprised they didnt make a move of Barkley. Or just keep Flynn and put Petty on the PS. Good thing Geno will not be out long

  8. @ wnadler… Have you been drug tested? Geno was the lowest ranked QB in the NFL last year, IK should have been given an award for breaking Geno’s jaw. I’ll bet if Geno started that game the Jets would have lost.
