NFL morning after: Reactions and Overreactions in Week One

AP

Whether your team won or lost on Sunday, the best advice I can give you is this: Don’t overreact to Week One.

Here’s a little story about how wrong our perceptions can be after Week One of the NFL season: The best defense I’ve ever seen was that of the 1985 Chicago Bears. Do you know what the Chicago Sun-Times wrote about after the Bears’ Week One victory over the Buccaneers? It was about how the Bears’ pass rush wasn’t up to par, and defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan was concerned that his players weren’t getting to the quarterback enough.

If the ’85 Bears’ defense wasn’t obviously great in Week One, then that should tell us all we need to know about how hard it is to judge a player or a team after just one game of the season. The sample size is so small that the conclusions we can draw are little more than guesswork.

Think back to last year. The Patriots got blown out by the Dolphins in Week One. The Titans blew out the Chiefs in Week One. If you were a member of the Week One Overreactors Society, you never would have guessed that the Patriots would win the Super Bowl and the Titans would go 2-14.

So as I review Week One, I’ll be careful to separate the reactions that that will still look reasonable in Week 17 with the overreactions that will look foolish by the end of the year.

Reaction: Peyton Manning doesn’t have the arm he used to. It’s just not debatable anymore: At age 39, Manning doesn’t have the same kind of zip on his passes he once did. Although the Broncos won on Sunday, Manning struggled, completing 24 of 40 passes for 175 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception. He’s not the player he once was.
Overreaction: The Broncos can’t win with Peyton’s dead arm. For most of his career, Manning was the reason his team was winning. He won’t be the reason Denver wins this year, but that doesn’t mean Denver won’t win this year. The Broncos have a very good defense, and that can take them far. Manning may not be able to beat teams with his arm, but he can still beat teams with his brain, and with Manning as an effective game manager, the Broncos can be a Super Bowl team.

Reaction: The Bills’ defense is great. When you take a defense that was already among the best in the league and you add Rex Ryan as coach, you can bet that you’re going to see something special. That’s what we saw in Buffalo yesterday, where the Bills absolutely shut down Andrew Luck & Co. on their way to a dominant victory. I don’t know how good the Bills as a team are going to be, but I know their defense is going to be good.
Overreaction: Tyrod Taylor is great. The reason I don’t know how good the Bills as a team will be is that I don’t know how good a quarterback Taylor is. He was outstanding on Sunday, his first NFL start, completing 14 of 19 passes for 195 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions, plus 41 rushing yards. But when NFL defenses get more time to study his limitations as a passer and prepare for his abilities as a runner, will they figure out how to stop him? Until we know the answer to that question, any assessment of Taylor based on his Week One performance is an overreaction.

Reaction: J.J. Watt is the best defensive player in the NFL. Watt was the best defensive player in the NFL last year, the year before that and the year before that. (He only won the Defensive Player of the Year award twice, but he should have won it all three years.) Yesterday against the Chiefs, Watt had nine solo tackles, two sacks, six tackles for loss and three quarterback hits. He dominated the game as much as any defensive lineman ever can, although unfortunately for Watt and the Texans there’s only so much a defensive lineman can do to take over a game. Houston lost because the Texans’ defense left too many open receivers underneath, and because the offense couldn’t get going.
Overreaction: Bill O’Brien chose wrong when he named Brian Hoyer the starter. It doesn’t look good for Hoyer after he struggled early and was benched for Ryan Mallett, who played pretty well after coming in off the bench late in the game. But that doesn’t necessarily mean Mallett is the answer for the Texans. If O’Brien was confident after spending months watching Hoyer and Mallett in practice that Hoyer was the better quarterback, he shouldn’t allow one game to change his mind.

Reaction: The Cleveland Browns stink. The Browns are a mess. They’ve been a mess for more than a decade, having last been to the playoffs in 2002. It’s one thing to lose in Week One, but to get blown out by a bad team like the Jets? To have your running backs combine for 20 carries for 46 yards? Cleveland is a bad football team. I say that confidently after one game.
Overreaction: Johnny Manziel stinks. Manziel didn’t play well in relief of an injured Josh McCown, but it would be unfair to suggest that it’s proof that he can’t make it as an NFL quarterback. Manziel didn’t get much practice time with the first-string offense during training camp, and he hadn’t been practicing at all recently because of elbow tendinitis. His bad game Sunday wasn’t proof that he’s unable to become a good NFL quarterback.

Reaction: NFL kickers are no longer automatic on extra points. There’s no doubt that the extra point is harder now that the NFL has moved it 13 yards back. Last season, only eight extra points were missed all year. Yesterday afternoon, four extra points were missed. NFL kickers will still make more than 90 percent of their extra points, and probably more than 95 percent. But they’re no longer automatic like they used to be.
Overreaction: Broncos kicker Brandon McManus is automatic from anywhere. Only five kickers made a field goal of 56 yards or longer last season. On Sunday, McManus kicked a 56-yard field goal and a 57-yard field goal — in the first quarter. That’s an impressive feat, but we shouldn’t overreact to it. The reality is that at Denver’s altitude, where a kicked football will typically travel about five yards farther than it would at sea level, every NFL kicker can hit a 57-yard field goal. McManus had a good game, going four-for-four, but get back to me when he hits a 57-yard field goal away from Denver.

Reaction: Ameer Abdullah is for real. Abdullah, the Lions’ rookie running back, was outstanding in his NFL debut, with 50 rushing yards, 44 receiving yards and 105 kickoff return yards. That made him the first player since at least 1960 to have reach 50 rushing yards, 40 receiving yards and 100 kickoff returns in his NFL debut. I don’t know what kind of career Abdullah will have, but there’s no question that he’s a special talent.
Overreaction: Marcus Mariota is great and Jameis Winston is terrible. In the battle of the first and second picks in the NFL draft, Winston struggled mightily while Mariota was brilliant. But success at the quarterback position requires so many different traits that it’s really impossible to say with any certainty after one game what kind of career a quarterback is going to have. Mariota will have some down days, and Winston will have some up days. By Week 17, we may have largely forgotten how much better Mariota was than Winston on Sunday — and we may forget just about everything else that’s making us overreact in Week One.

105 responses to “NFL morning after: Reactions and Overreactions in Week One

  1. Jameis Winston may or may not be terrible, but Lovie Smith, Jason Licht, and most importantly the Glazers boys are terrible, and the Bucs will be going nowhere with those three elements in the franchise.

  2. Well written. And I’m seriously trying to temper my reaction to Manning’s performance yesterday but dang, he just seems like he lost “it” over night.

His passes yesterday were in slow motion, he looked like everything was a struggle, and if at any other point in his career I said “He had 40 passing attempts” you’d guess that he had at least over 250 yards passing. He didn’t even break 175.

It’s sad to see an era come to an end. He’s gotta walk away after this season. No one begrudges him a farewell tour but don’t be “that guy” that hangs around. I don’t think he will.

  3. I think it causes some people physical harm for journalists to say that the Bills might finally, finally have decent QB play again.

Tyrod had a good day while getting blitzed to death. He looked sharp, actively prevented two possible turnovers and could have run up the score more if Indy and their vaunted “best in the league” passing attack had been less than two scores away.

Just let us enjoy it for a minute.

  4. typical jets hate. jets will have one of the best defenses in the league and actually have very good players on offense for a change. they’ll be a tough game for most teams in the league.

  5. My reaction is that if you’re wearing deodorant, you’ve got a better defense than my Packers.

The overreaction would be that the Bears are great, and that you’re safe coming to Wisconsin.

  6. JJ Watt is great. But he looks like an imbecile whenever he celebrates a great play he has just made w/ one of his stupid finger wags while his team is getting their asses handed to them. What a meathead.

  7. Reaction. Aaron Rodgers is in MVP form. Other QBs had better numbers yesterday but none were playing at his level.

Overreaction. James Jones = Jordy Nelson. Hold your enthusiasm Packers fans. Jones had a nice day but the Bears have a serious lack of talent at CB and a nonexistent pass rush. Let’s see how he does against a real D before expectations get out of control.

  8. Sorry, but JJ Watts only had an average game. He was playing across from a scrub signed off of the street on Monday. In addition, one of his sacks was a shoestring tackle for a half yard loss. Unfortunately this was one of the few bright spots for Houston especially since the Chiefs were in prevent mode most of the second half.

  9. Peyton’s arm isn’t what it used to be but man, that Denver D is legit.
I have a feeling we’ll be going back to Denver in December.

  10. It’s rare for me to feel bad for a professional athlete for something other than a serious injury. But I always feel bad for Joe Thomas whenever I’m reminded how bad the Browns are.

  11. I would guess most long kicks (50 yds plus) are missed left or right not short. This is because any kick that isn’t dead center will eventually be wide given enough distance.

So McManus deserves recognition for his long distance accuracy. Accuracy is not helped or hurt by thinner air.

  12. I don’t know that Winston is terrible, but I’m fairly certain that Mariota is going to be great.

  13. Reaction: Terrell Suggs’ loss on defense for the season stinks.

Overreaction: The Ravens’ pass rush doesn’t have enough depth to absorb losing Suggs for 2015.

  14. Yeah jj watt absolutely dominated that game- giving up 27 points to make the game over by half is totally dominant. Pretty easy to look good on defense when the offense is in “conservative don’t blow this huge lead” mode.

This is like sc yesterday that kept hyping up watt as his defense got run all over the field. I’m sorry but it’s hard to say someone had a dominant game when the game wasn’t competitive until a few garbage time scores in the fourth quarter.

  15. Regarding the Browns-Jets: The Jets are not a bad team. They may end up being mediocre or even below average but they are not bad.

Also, it is not an overreaction to say that Johnny Tebow is terrible because, well, he is.

  16. Reaction: Suh is the most overpaid player in the league.
Overreaction: Suh is going to be suspended for the rest of the season for kicking Morris in the head.

  17. As for the Bucs, the 1 constant is they lose, especially at home….

Mediocre Qbs, weak oline, outdated defense a rookie can take advantage of…

Nothing but 1 horrific coaching hire After the next since Gruden’s departure… The only question is which will be the next one the fans will have to suffer through!

  18. Bill O’Brien should have remained at PSU where he was loved and respected on how he reacted to the scandalous NCAA and Mark Emmert. He is also a great NFL coach. He will right that ship in Texas just as he did in Happy Valley.

  19. Five (5) “Quick & Glaring” Takeaways from Week One:

    1. Big Bro Manning is no longer effective, across-the-board.

    2. Texans HC Bill O’Brien should let his starting QB (Brian Hoyer) face adversity, rather than pull him out of the game. When learning to ride a bike, you have to allow your child to fall off in order for them to learn to stay upright on their own.

    3. The Bills seem very dynamic; the Rams seem very dynamic; the Chargers seem very dynamic. Early post-season favorites, just after one game.

    4. Lovie Smith and Rob Ryan are early candidates for the Unemployment Line.

    5. Marcus “Baby Brady” Mario-tah is the real deal.

  20. @zackd2: This is an underdiscussed topic. Bad teams constantly take coordinators and role players from perennial playoff teams in the hopes that they can respectively become great head coaches and players in their own rites and it’s lazy and uninspired. How many former Patriot QBs, Ravens LBs, Seattle DBs, Packers WRs etc do teams have to burn through before this is understood?

  21. There’s a little bit of Brett Favre in Jay Cutler. Every time the guy throws the ball in the fourth quarter, you have to hold your breath.

Then you die a thousand deaths.

  22. I love the narrative that the bronco’s offensive struggles are all on Manning’s arm. He has been declining for a few years but I don’t recall him under throwing open guys. I guarantee the offense will get up to speed. The fact is the Ravens defense was great yesterday. Jimmy Smith when healthy is a shut down corner. Whether it will hold up without Suggs remains to be seen.

  23. Were any footballs tested yesterday for air pressure? I mean the NFL just spent the last 7 months and tons of money because air pressure was so important, so surely they tested footballs, right?

  24. Reaction: Chicago fans were surprised the game was competitive late. If we had decent corners they could have won the game. Cutler is always good for a minimum of one pick per game.

Overreaction: Forte will have these type of games when they are committed to the run.

  25. Hoyer is awful. First play of the season and he throws up a 5 yard out off his back foot directly to the defender. Hoyer directly handed the Chiefs 14 points in that game. It’s not an overreaction to say Mallet should start. Hell, give the QB job to Shane Lechler. He couldn’t be any worse than Hoyer. That was some bad, bad football.

  26. Peyton looked as bad… as Bronco fans feared he would. Even many of the completions were late.

Good thing their Defense can play Offense, they’re gonna need it.

  27. I just don’t trust Kubiak to let Manning manage the game. Any smart coach would. Kubiak, not so much.

And Winston will stink because he will not learn to not make certain throws. He will always throw a lot of picks. You can get away with that in college, not in the NFL.

  28. Manning overthrew three long balls, and no, I don’t think it is because he ‘over-compensated’ and ‘flung it down the field’ as one Post reporter suggested.

Baltimore has a very good defense, and the O-line is make shift at the moment. Manning was sacked what, 4 times, 5 times? How often does that happen?

As the year moves along, hopefully the O-Line will gel, and Peyton will be more comfortable in the offense. Heck of a last drive. Didn’t quite ICE the game, but it did force the Ravens into having to score a touchdown to win it.

At 39, he’s still better than 80% of the league, and that isn’t bad.

  29. Re: Ameer Abdullah being “the first player since at least 1960 to have reach 50 rushing yards, 40 receiving yards and 100 kickoff returns all in the same game,” that must only be referring to players making their NFL debut (?). Otherwise, I’m sure I see those attainable numbers on a regular basis.
I know for a fact that I saw them in 1995, when Glyn Milburn of the Broncos was a one-man wrecking crew against the Seahawks with 131 rushing yards, 45 receiving yards, 133 kick return yards, and 95 punt return yards. It was a single game all-purpose yards record at the time; not sure if it still stands.
I’ve spent a lot of my precious morning minutes looking this up so please post it and don’t make it all for naught.

  30. Wait until Sunday when the Patriots put up 38pts on that Rex Ryan defense.

Then lets see what everyone says about this “Great” defense.

    Patriots 38 Bills 13

Why……. because BB is fantastic against 1st year QB’s and has plenty of time to watch the tape on Taylor.

Oh and they can’t stop Gronk, period.

  31. I know on paper everyone thinks the Jets are terrible, but this Jets team isn’t that bad. An efficient offense and a good defense. They will likely win more games than most people think.

  32. This SUH drama is fabricated story lines.
He put a hit on a guy then walked to his defense.
morris tried to get up quick and put his head in front of that knee.

  33. Your wrong about the Bills Tyrod Taylor
he has already stated that he is in the pocket QB
and will make most of his throws from the Pocket
thats what we saw in the preseason and thats pretty much what he did in his first start with a QB rating of 123 and over 10 yards per pass attempt with a 73 percent completion percentage.
So you guys better get used to the Bills winning a lot of games. You just keep listening what the mass media pushes out there about Taylor. Taylor is 6 foot one and he sees him self playing from the pocket and that is what he will do. Plus he has the arm to do it. Did any one see that ball he threw to Percy Harvin it was a 51 yard touch down pass but the Ball traveled 56 yards in the air. This guy is going to be Russell Wilson
2.0 Yes Taylor will run a little when the pocket breaks down just like Russell wilson does and or when Greg Roman has a designed read option for him. Roman who happens to be one of the best offense coordinators in football really knows what he’s doing. Know lets talk about the Bills defense
They have played dating back to last December
the Played Payton Manning in Denver, Aaron Rogers in Buffalo and Andrew Luck in Buffalo
there combined stats in those games from those
    3 QB’s are as follows 601 yards, 2 TD, 6 INT
Yes thats correct those 3 QB’S did those combined stats against the Bills defense. The Bills have the Best Defense in the NFL at this moment and now you add in the defensive master mind of Rex Ryan and you better watch out. Oh by the way the Bills had 3 of there best defensive players out for yesterdays game. Marcel Dareus, Corey Graham and Leodis McKelvin This what they they did to
Mr Luck yesterday. 26 for 29 243 yards, QB rating
of 63 completing 53 percent of his passes, Yards per pass attempt 5.o with is laughable. I guess you can tell by know that I’m proud of the Bills and what they have built. This is not the same old Bills.
They have a QB in the mold of Russell Wilson and
all these great Skill Players. Shady McCoy. Sammy Watkins, Percy Harvin, Robert Woods, Charles Clay
I would say the AFC and the NFL is in for a Rude Awakening this year.

  34. Mallett got to come in when the Chiefs shut it down and started coasting on defense. Not sure he would’ve fared any better earlier in the game.

  35. “And I’m seriously trying to temper my reaction to Manning’s performance yesterday but dang, he just seems like he lost “it” over night.”

“It” has been a long, slow process.

  36. Reaction: The Cowboys are really going to miss Demarco Murray. Averaged less then 4 yards per carry running it against a Giants defense that is without it’s best run defenders (JPP, Beason). Holes were opened by it’s O-Line, but their backs lacked patience in hitting the holes and failed to break tackles.

Over-reaction: The Cowboys running backs suck! While they didn’t have a great day running it they did look good in space catching the ball. I loved hearing Chris Collinsworth say”Tony Romo says Lance Dunbar is the Cowboys Darren Sproles”. You guys name your players after ours? That’s so cute!

  37. This off season BS is starting to temper down. There was one one post about the Patriots cheating.

Buffalo’s defense is for real… Rex is one of the great defensive coaches and next Weeks Pats/Bills game will be a highlight of the weekend.

  38. Small Ben in Big Games did what he always does. He got 3 points in the first 38 minutes and 14 points in the first 59 minutes and 58 seconds.

Small Ben in Big Games will have 4 good games, 4 average games, and 8 poop the bed games. This one goes under the PTB category.

  39. Reaction: Rob Gronkowski is the best player in FB

Overreaction: Tyrod Tayler is a bonifide NFL starting QB. It was the Colts.

  40. Sorry, but the greateast defense ever was the 1976 Steelers and not the 1985 Bears. Not only can this can be verified statistically, but that same defense dominated the better part of a decade, not just one year.
The 1976 Steelers didn’t even win a Super Bowl that year due to serious offensive injuries, but the defense dominated like no other team before or since.
They surrendered only 28 points in the final NINE games. They held 7 straight opponents to either zero points or a lone field goal, incuding 5 shutouts. They held 8 opposing offenses to no touchdowns. During that stretch, they didn’t allow an offensive touchdown for 22 consecutive quarters. It was the greatest run of statistical and physical dominance in NFL history. The league changed its rules regarding defensive play to try to curb this mastery, but it did no good. The Steelers went on to win 2 more Super Bowls to match their previous 2 and the rest is history.
Not to take anything away from the 1985 Bears. They were indeed a great defense. Just not the greatest ever.

  41. Just how badly did the Giants miss James Jones yesterday? if he did for the Giants what he did for the Packers they would have won the game but the brain trust in NY said he wasnt good enough to make it as a reciever there.how stupid is that.

Keep dreaming. Won’t happen. Bills will kick the snot out of the Patriots on Sunday.

  43. Finally, finally the Bills are for real. Watch out New England. The Bills crushed Pittsburgh in the preseason and New England only beat them by a touchdown. Brady can’t handle pressure as evidenced by last years early games. This will be the Pats first post deflategate game outside the shelter of Gillette and it will be a hostile environment. Rex will solve the Gronk thing by COVERING him unlike the Steelers. Go Bills!

  44. Tampa should be more concerned with that defense than Jameis…..Jameis played like a rookie what was TB doing on defense when you let a rookie QB throw 4-5 touchdowns on you?

Mariota looks like Wilson the way he moves in the pocket and is just as accurate on the run as if he was in the pocket…kid looked good but lets wait until he plays a real defense

  45. Reaction: Suh is the dirtiest player in the league

Overeaction: saying anything negative about the REDSKINS O line performance

  46. Reaction: Packers pull out a win over the Bears aided in part by a Clay Matthews interception of Jay Cutler.

    Overreaction: Same old Jay.

Thoughts: I (Packer fan) watched the game with my 30 year old stepson (Bear fan). Cutler was NOT the “same old Jay.” His completion percentage wasn’t great but there were many catchable balls that went uncaught and there were some pretty good pass breakups by the Packers’ young corners (Veteran Sam Shields was torched mercilessly and Safety Morgan Burnett was sorely missed).

In the 4th quarter, with the Bears defense on the field and the Bears being in a bad way overall, the TV crew showed the inevitable shot of Cutler on the sidelines. While you, me, and everyone else in the world would have expected to see Jay sitting on the end of the bench sulking, he was not. He was standing at the edge of the playing field, clearly still invested in the game.

There is reason for optimism in Chicago… and this Packer fan is excited to see it.

Thank you for your feedback. We will look into it.

I meant to “like” it and aimed too low and reported it. I’m a BAD QB. Oops

    ==================================

    2. I would LOVE to see this column every week. Not only was the column great but so were the great majority of the comments.

  48. Ok I got it.
Reation Houston we have a problem, Cleveland,, need I say more

Overeaction. Why won’t the REDSKINS just cut RGIII?

  49. Browns are definitely awful. I was impressed by Manziel. Any time he made a play, a flag was thrown. How would any qb do given third and a mile?

That said, he still needs to work on pocket awareness. Great zip to his balls. Fast reads. Great feet. Bad qb rating = bad game? The context says otherwise. There’s a bigger picture to examine here. He passed the eye test.

Btw, absolutely could not stand the holding call on Mack. Ridiculous. He stood his man up face to face, hands were inside the shoulder pads. Pancaked him.

  50. So for the last couple of months colts fans say we cheated all last season. Now after a big loss theyre using the patriots @ miami game as a reason to not panic. So if the 2014 patriots game werent legit than why are they using our past games as a way to feel better? Colts fans are sorry

Texans HC Bill O’Brien should let his starting QB (Brian Hoyer) face adversity, rather than pull him out of the game. When learning to ride a bike, you have to allow your child to fall off in order for them to learn to stay upright on their own.
    =====

That point would make more sense if Hoyer wasn’t 29 years old in his 7th professional season making his 18th professional start.

  52. Manning was sacked 4 times. He does not have any faith in his O line and lets not forget at least 3 of them are nubies. Yes, I know they have practiced for months but this was a GAME. Don’t seal the casket just yet.

  53. Well I was a doubter going into this weekend on the Bills. I agree, that it is one week, but they looked pretty good. My Colts had some awful field position, committed some drive killing penalties, and Luck was off all game. I expect them to be fine, but this was a tough one.

  54. Reaction: The Panthers have one of the best defenses in the NFL. True, they were playing a Jaguars team that doesn’t have any elite receivers, but they took advantage of most of the mistakes Bortles made and largely held the newly-anointed-greatest-thing-since-sliced-bread TJ Yeldon to minimal impact. The Jags were unable to make a big move after Luke Kuechly went out with a concussion.

Overreaction: The Panthers have no left tackle. Oher was pretty bad, but he has a chance to improve against weak defenses the next 3 games. Hopefully he will.

  55. I think O’Brien has turned the spotlight squarely on himself with such a quick, desperate-looking change at QB. If you can’t even give your starting QB a full game to get comfortable, what does that say about your decision making and your faith in your team?

The Texans were going to lose that game with any QB. They were beaten by a better team. Better to use it as experience rather than suddenly put a bunch of question marks over your team.

O’Brien should worry less about finding the perfect QB in one game and more about avoiding ending up in 3rd place in the division, and putting his own job at risk. It may be an overreaction, but the Titans seem to have a higher ceiling at this point.

  56. How much longer are the Bucs owners going to put up with Lovie Smith and his antiquated defensive scheme and all the Bear throwaway players?
The media bitched like crazy about Rutgers players, but you hear almost nothing about Bears players playing for Tampa.

Urlacker and Briggs are still available!

  57. The Bills D is definitely for real, but we knew that last year anyway so its not lile this is some unknown football secret.

The Pats will have their work cut out here, no question about it. This will probably be the toughest test the Pats O line gets this season.

But you don’t win 6 rings by crapping your pants every time you see a good D that you’ll face next up. The Pats have arguably faced better D’s than this before so its not like this is going to be a new and shocking experience for them.

Buffalo may well win on Sunday, but they’re not soft like the Colts. It’ll be a close game but probably not one that the Bills kick the snot out of the Patriots in.

  58. You run Marshawn Lynch on 2ND AND GOAL in the Superbowl, and you THROW a 3 yard pass on 4th and 1. Damn you Darrell Bevell. Seahawks put up some great film to learn from yesterday. Everyone except for Lockett needs to step it up several notches.

  59. “Overreaction: Johnny Manziel stinks.”

No! This is just a fact. He stinks. He’s looked like garbage in every NFL game that’s he’s played in. An over-reaction would be that Manziel is awful and will never be any good.

Although the latter is probably true, he still has time to figure it out. The reason it probably won’t happen though is because his game never made sense for the NFL. In college all he did was scramble around and heave it up to Mike Evans. That doesn’t quite work in the Pros…

  60. Over Reaction=The Redskins are horrible and dont have any talent

Reaction=This team is not as bad as everybody thinks,Morris=122 yds offensive line is much improved,And for once the Defense did not allow a 100 yard rushing game

    Think about it!

  61. Reaction: NE wins
Overreaction: Sniveling coach sadly diverts attention from his atrocious coaching by pulling out the Patriots cheated card.
Mega overreaction: Media and non NE fans treat cryin coaches word as gospel.
End result: NFL to blame for communications problem and Tomlins coaching is still atrocious.

  62. Watching the Jets-Browns game was watching e very under-budgeted “C” movie!

And I am a Jets fan!!

  63. RE: Brandon McManus, those kicks would have been good from 70…so by your 5 yard logic they would be good from 65 anywhere else. Still very impressive. There hasn’t been a question that McManus can nail the long field goals. His problem has been the intermediate kicks.

  64. Reaction: Texans need to minimize turnovers.

Overreaction: Chiefs fans posting about garbage-time scoring. Don’t forget the 14 point the Texans (aka Hoyer) gave you.

  65. “By Week 17, we may have largely forgotten how much better Mariota was than Winston on Sunday…”

… because we’ll have an entire season’s worth of evidence that Winston sucks and the Bucs should have taken Mariota.

  66. Reaction: Chiefs blasted the vaunted Texans defense
Overreaction: Texans fans making excuses for the loss

  67. The Bills need to get their O-line up to snuff and their secondary healthy if they want to beat New England next week.

But, promising week 1 performance by the defense as a whole, and especially the depth guys in the secondary who stepped up.

  68. manning won his only super bowl when the colts had a great defense and he relied on the running game more during that season than in any other. Denver won their two super bowls under Elway when they had a strong running game and Elway did not have to carry the offense on his back. So, if Manning’ arm is not what it used to and he has to rely more on his d and running game, then that just may be the recipe for a second super bowl ring for him.

Finally, finally the Bills are for real. Watch out New England. The Bills crushed Pittsburgh in the preseason and New England only beat them by a touchdown.

    *************************************************************************

The Bills look like they’ll be solid this year, but not sure I’d use preseason games as a gauge for anything. The Steelers hardly played any offensive starters at skill positions (Roethlisberger threw four passes and then was out; Bell and DeAngelo Williams combined for five carries before they were out; Antonio Brown and Heath Miller weren’t used, Martavis Bryant was out the second half). The guys who played most of the downs on defense, particularly in the second half, were those vying for bottom roster or practice squad spots. Kind of hard to draw any conclusions from that.

  70. I ended up with both Bell and Abdullah from my draft. And now know which one to start. Which means benched Bell will probably have the big game.

    ———————————————————

What is so cute is Eagle fans acting like kids starting kindergarten every off season & preseason. But once the regular reason starts & January rolls around the cutest part will be another year with zero championships. 1960 Eagle fan, your concerns are much bigger than Romo speaking off the cuff comparing Dunbar to Sproles.

  72. Reaction: Texans fans talking about how they are the real deal this year but already knowing they aren’t

Overreaction: They continue to yap, yap, yap.

Lol…. He had an “average” game…

2 Sacks ( one of them after the tackle ripped his helmet off)
    6 tackles for loss
    2 tackles for no gain
    1 batted ball

JJ had 9 total tackles, 8 of them were at or behind the line of scrimmage.

To be honest…. I guess maybe that has become an average game for JJ.
