Report: Raiders reach out to Christian Ponder with Carr injured

AP

The Raiders cut Christian Ponder when they decided to go with Matt McGloin as the backup to Derek Carr, but Ponder’s absence from Oakland may turn out to be a brief one.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Raiders have reached out to Ponder in the wake of the hand injury that knocked Carr out of Sunday’s loss to the Bengals. Per Mortensen, Ponder cited family reasons when he turned down a offer to work out for the Eagles on Tuesday.

X-rays on Carr’s hand were negative and Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports he suffered a bruised thumb, but he’s waiting on MRI results to determine the full extent of the injury. Although the team and Carr are waiting on those results, Mortensen reports that the Raiders expect Carr to miss their Week Two game against the Ravens.

Ponder was 22-of-35 for 245 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Raiders in the preseason.

  1. Man, the only thing more consistent than the 13 years of non-winning seasons is RaiderNation’s ability to shoulder the failures and remain optimistic and supportive. I really think it’s time to move on from Big Reg. And it’s way past time for Bill Musgrave to retire.

  2. He’s got all the money he made from the Vikings, plus Samantha’s. I think it would be hilarious if he told the Raiders to stick it.

  3. let me get this right-
Christian Ponder TURNED DOWN Chip Kelly? Chip turned Foles into a ProBowl QB…would’ve been the best thing Ponder could’ve done for his career. #solidmove

  4. Raiders get smashed at home yesterday and the goods news on Monday is???? Cristian Ponder is coming back to help. I feel so much better now knowing this.

  5. No way Del Rio plays Carr next week. Based on how sorry we looked yesterday he knows there is a slim chance to win against the Ravens so looks better for him after the loss to say “well Derek didn’t play”. It’s a convenient “out” for Del Rio. I lay 100% of that performance yesterday on him. He didn’t have that team prepared or ready to play at all.

Between Del Rio/Musgrave/Norton JR I expected games where they would get worked by opposing coaches with X’s and O’s but never figured not being prepared to play and toughness would be an issue. But it was an issue yesterday.

S & B, thanks for the best laugh I’ve had all day.

  7. If you like 5 yard out routes and 5 yard hook routes pray that Christian ponder answers the call.
If not you would be better off not signing anyone and letting a running back or cooper run the wild cat. Vikes fan here and I painfully watched ponder his whole career. Those are the only 2 throws he knows how to read and complete. Musgrave know this too.

  8. Its tough being a Raider fan these days, and its funny watching Hugh Jackson ( who i wish was still the coach ) have his offense rolling yesterday with tons of formations and motion and all kinds of NFL type of stuff.

Musgrave called i think the same 5 plays all game, just different players catching the 2 yard pass or running strait up the middle…… our offense looked like a preseason game one type of offense, NOT a scriped first series throw the defense off balance offense.

and im not sure how much i can take looking at Del Rio stand there on the sideline with that stupid look on his face like ( whats going on? )

I know its only one game, but my god how long can this go on? Gruden come save us !

Or, he knows enough about Chip from the league grapevine that he simply doesn’t want to work with him.

He’s a free agent… if he’s not starving for a paycheck (which I highly doubt he is), the choice to sign or not to sign with a particular team is completely his.

  10. While it is tough to write off the Raiders completely after one game, it is hard to have nearly as much hope for them as there was when you’re looking to Ponder to save you.

I guess rumors of the resurrection of the Raiders were greatly exaggerated.

  11. God, I hope he told the Raiders he will “ponder” their offer. Bonus points for an Austin Powers voice.

  12. where and what is all the talk of the raiders being great this year……what kool aid do people drink. I remember reading the raiders were 300-1 long shots, although the best i could fine was a 100 to win….still the over under for wins is 5 and a half…….it’s only one game……to me it just looked like a bunch of guys playing there first game, which for the most part was the case…….raiders had the right play called on the 4th and goal when it was 0 to 0 , and should have taken the ball over after a 4 yard loss…. then we tried to convert a 4 and 1 on our side of the field, and that is when the game spun out of control.

I am still optimistic about the direction of the team, but only a fool would think there will not be growing pains from such a young team.

  13. I actually like Ponder. Dude has a 10 win season as a starter, but career arc got changed when he was injured and didnt start the playoff game(Joe Webb).

  14. Christian Ponder is well spoken, a man of quit wit, and despite being extremely comfortable in front of a microphone doesn’t play to the camera(Looking at you Sapp and Irvin with those crazy screeching noises). He will make an absolutely fantastic analyst or color-guy. Weather this season or after a 10 year career, it’ll be cool.

  15. Good job McKenzie ,I do believe Musgrave was in charge of JaPorkus Russell’s developement. No wonder our offense looks anemic.I know its one game but it just looks like the same results different personel.I’m tired of being excited in August for the new season and disapointed in September. You need to be fired you’re riding on the coat tails of Ron Wolfe you suck McKenzie.

  16. As a Vikings fan I’m just really sorry about ponder and Musgrave and I’m sorry you guys ever had to see ponder in a raider jersey instead of arena football or cfl jersey. I know what it’s like to be excited about the season only to see the season pretty go down the toilet week one.
