Tom Brady is a Donald Trump supporter, apparently

Donald Trump likes Tom Brady. Tom Brady apparently likes Donald Trump, too.

Asked by reporters on Wednesday whether Trump has what it takes to become the President of the U.S.A., Brady said, “I hope so. That would be great. There would be a putting green on the White House lawn. I’m sure of that.”

It’s not exactly an unequivocal endorsement, but it sounds like Brady is a member of Team Trump. Which sort of cuts against the prevailing thought that athletes should tread lightly when it comes to candidates they do or don’t support, especially for candidates who are more than a little polarizing, to say the least.

Trump is running as a Republican, and plenty of pro athletes lean to the right, in part because they pay a lot of money in taxes, and would prefer not to.

  1. Being a Republican isn’t ENTIRELY about us selfishly, and greedily trying to hold onto the money we spend the majority of our waking hours busting our backs over, rather than have a pensioned stranger spend it in a clearly defined and logical fashion.

  2. Hillary Clinton just asked an aide to get an intern to call a focus group to develop a study about what her feelings should be about this.

  3. It’s certainly interesting considering most NE fans live in a part of the country that is predominantly liberal. I’ve seen some fans whine about him supporting Trump, which is sad. If a player’s personal political views dictate whether you like them or not, you’re not a very tolerant person and are exactly what is wrong with our society.

  4. why are reporters asking this question to tom brady? seems kind of out of line asking someone who you support. He loses no matter what in that question.

  5. Maybe people to the right just have more common sense, and athletes in particular understand what it means to earn money through hard work.

  6. Even quality human beings like Brady make mistakes…..like cheating.

Had to help you finish the obvious ending. Tom is a perfect Republican cares about everybody to their face while stabbing them in the back if it advances his agenda. Sorta of a closet let them eat cake kind of guy…

  7. “I hope so?” That ranks right up there with his answer when he was asked if he was a cheater.

    “I don’t believe so.”

  8. At least Trump has the gonads to tell everyone what many are afraid to say. He may not know foreign relations, but he knows about our own internal issues.

  9. “……….. and plenty of pro athletes lean to the right, in part because they pay a lot of money in taxes, and would prefer not to.”

Or it could be something a lot less selfish like seeing the divisiveness cause by liberals control of the country over the past 7 years and like most of us, are sick of it. And there may even be a few who prefer freedom over socialism/communism, which is pretty much where the Democratic party is headed anyway.

  10. Considering Brady skipped the White House visit this year, it should surprise no one that he’s republican.

I think it’s a rule that if you’re a top NFL QB, you have to be a republican (Both Mannings, Steve Young, Joe Montana, John Elway, Brady, Marino, Aikman… I think Brees and Rodgers are as well.)

Actually, it is The Donald that shouldn’t be going near Brady. Brady is too polarizing a figure for a president to discuss.

So Massachusetts will vote Republican for the first time ever?

    Seriously, the voted for Dukakis.

I’ve lived here my whole life. More conservatives in Ma. than you think. I don’t trust a voting system that’s controlled by dems. Every election I’m suspicious.

  13. Wealthy men like the republican tax breaks for the wealthy. Same old same old.

I would say I am shocked that anyone would support Trump for president of the United States of America, just typing that makes me shake my head, but nothing related to politics really shocks me anymore.

Hell in a hand basket I tell you….. But at least we got football.

  14. “I think it’s a rule that if you’re a top NFL QB, you have to be a republican (Both Mannings, Steve Young, Joe Montana, John Elway, Brady, Marino, Aikman… I think Brees and Rodgers are as well”

People in fields where talent is the sole judge of success tend not to lean socialist.

  15. Trump came out against Roger Goodell a few weeks ago. He’s shot to the top of the polls since then. Anyone who values football has to back Trump, at least until another candidate figures it out.

  16. Tom Brady is a devout Republican. He always has been. He even attended George W Bush’s State of the Union address one year as the President’s guest.
It has been suggested by some that Tom has political aspirations – although probably not is Massachusetts which is strongly Democratic and always will be.
Don’t underestimate Brady’s skill in handling press conferences. It is good preparation for politics.

  17. Trump has said a lot of nice things about Brady and publicly supported him during the deflategate mess. It’s the least Brady could do. They are friends for goodness sake.

  18. I grew up poor, not welfare poor but poor nonetheless. I kept my nose clean; literally and figuratively and finished college. I worked for the government where I investigated fraud in Medicare, Medicaid and food stamp programs. Having that job and seeing the waste in those and other programs is what moved me from being a Democrat, to a conservative libertarian. I saw first hand how those agencies were more interested in signing up recipients, than making sure they actually NEEDED the help. Tom Brady and any wealthy person can set up their own foundations than growing the government.

  19. As a Latino who grew up watching the Patriots since the Pete Carroll days (I’m 25), it sucks. My father has watched the Pats since I can remember. Everybody else would watch soccer while he watched football. Then, the rest of the family and friends eventually followed as he was able to educate them about the game more and more. Every Sunday he would have cookouts and have the family over to watch the game while he rocked his TB Jersey. After watching him say he hoped Donald Trump, the guy who disrespected his race, his family, and the rest of the Latino population, he’s in disbelief. Every race has their port and cons and to put the blame on our race specifically is used for. My father has sacrificed a lot in his 52 years to give my family the opportunity to have a better life. Knowing that a guy he idolized in sports supports the type of judgment Trump gave to his race is devastating. Nonetheless, we will continue to support the team but not Mr. BRADY. You had a huge Latino fan base in Boston and all over the world and now you lost them. I don’t care if he cares or not but this is a reality check to those of us who thought he was the perfect idol.

  20. Good god, I hope he’s just being humorous about backing Trump in the putting green thing. If he’s serious about Trump for President, not gonna lie…

    that’s ridiculously stupid.

  21. It’s funny to see the comments about the wealthy leaning Republican… Like both parties aren’t controlled and dictated by money? Obama ran the richest political campaign in history during the last election – did he get that money going door to door?

  22. Trump supported Brady through his ordeal when most turned against him. Trump believes in the greatness of our country. At least we know that Trump will support and stand by the USA unequivocally. He will not sacrifice the interests of Americans in the altar of the almighty Political Correctness.

Sure Trump is bombastic. It’s refreshing. Better than the other sniveling, calculating, underhanded politicians. Biden is the clown not Trump. Trump has the demeanor and the mouth of construction workers he worked with in his youth which is quite a disconnect from his image of a billionaire. That’s why critics don’t ” get him”.

Brady is lucky to have such a real friend.

  23. And here you have it: this is what is wrong with this country. We literally have a segment of society who openly support a buffoon for president. Forget our best and brightest… He’s an idiot.

And I want to be clear. It’s not because he’s a republican. Far from it. It’s because he’s not a serious candidate. There are serious candidates in the field, but I bet even he knows he’s not one of them. Yet for some dumb reason, that’s who “America” wants.

Our founding fathers are rolling in their graves.

    ———

Was that before, or after, his Daddy left him $40 million, or before or after his first bankruptcy?

  25. The same Donald Trump who says he felt like he went to Vietnam because he went to military high school instead? There is more dirt on this guy than a pig in slop.

A complicit corporate media continues to abet the abject ignorance of a declining minority of Americans. Enjoy!

  26. Obama ran the richest political campaign in history during the last election – did he get that money going door to door?
    ===
In a manner of speaking: yes. Lots of email, social media and digital fundraising. Obama 2012 (not including D-aligned Super PACs) raised roughly $632 million from roughly 4.5 million donors with an average donation $65.89, though I’d be interested in seeing a quartile or quintile breakdown.

  27. Trump talks like an 8th grader and has zero substance. Brady’s obviously trolling the dumb and trying not to trash the guy who openly supported him during the nonsense.

  28. Obama ran the richest political campaign in history during the last election – did he get that money going door to door?
    ===

Donations to BHO’s 2012 campaign were 57% under $200, 33% between $200 and $2499 and 11% $2500, which is the max possible donation. For comparision, WMR’s campaign breaks down 24-37-39 for those same categories.

  29. I’m shocked, I figured Tom was going to be the a (D) Senator from CA or MA one day…he just seems like the current leadership that enjoys telling us how we should live and doing the complete opposite.

  30. The fact that anyone would vote for trump is terrifying. The man is a terrible human. Please people, if you are even thinking of voting for trump, don’t have children….ever.

  31. Previous reports indicate that Brady has been a friend of Donald Trump for a long time. Tom’s political leanings have never been indicated. We have no idea if Tom even cares about politics

  32. Wealthy men like the republican tax breaks for the wealthy. Same old same old.

We’re already paying more than you – we have a progressive tax structure that taxes us at a higher rate.

It’s our money, bud. We earned it, and we don’t owe it to government or you.

Class warfare gets us nowhere. Instead of hating the rich, try joining us. It’s possible. That’s what conservatives really want.

  33. though I’d be interested in seeing a quartile or quintile breakdown

I’m more interested in the breakdown of how he became wealthy despite never having a job in the private sector.

  34. “Yeah, she’s really something, and what a beauty, that one. If I weren’t happily married and, ya know, her father …”

Trump, speaking of his daughter. This guy needs to think before he talks.

  35. Seems like just a few years ago (Super Bowl XLVI) that you geniuses lining up behind Brady for supporting Trump were calling his wife a “gold digger”! More than half of you didn’t know she makes more than him.

Despite Gisele’s prayers, God preferred the Giants that year.

Feel free to return to talking about whether there’s enough Brady’s footballs.

  36. I wouldn’t read into this as an indicator of Tom Brady’s political beliefs, they’re personal friends and Trump has long lauded Tom Brady even listing him as one of the few people he’d be proud to have date his daughter.

Now if Brady said, “Yeah, then we can finally get rid of them Mexicans!” then you can start to worry …

  37. I’m more interested in the breakdown of how he became wealthy despite never having a job in the private sector.

Barack Obama wrote two books – “Dreams From My Father” (1995) and “Audacity of Hope” (2006). They moved a bunch of copy. there was also that whole Nobel Prize award in 2009. That comes with a big cash prize. Finally US senators get paid like $220k and POTUS gets $400k.

Then there’s Michelle… She was a highly compensated hospital administrator before BHO was POTUS.

But I wasn’t talking about the Obamas. I was talking about his donors, who frankly were legion and mostly small.

  38. A leader can always identify another leader. By the way, Trump has talked about raising taxes on the rich…um Tom Brady and wifey are rich. You’d think he would run the other way.

  39. Er, Brady’s punchline about Trump turning the Whitehouse lawn into a putting green should telegraph to anyone with an IQ above zero that he’s not being entirely serious.

Sadly (in my opinion) he could well have low-tax Republican leanings – most rich people do – but that’s what you get in a democracy, and he at least does charity stuff.

  40. Some 15 years from now Rep. president Brady will give dubya bush a run for his money as the worst ever. When he speaks he inserts his foot.
