Panthers add some offensive line depth with Fernando Velasco

Panthers center Ryan Kalil might have played more snaps than they were hoping last week, but the Panthers have an experienced reserve now.

The team announced they had brought back veteran center Fernando Velasco, and placed backup tackle Nate Chandler on injured reserve.

They were hoping to limit Kalil’s work coming off a preseason knee problem, but he played every snap last week against the Jaguars.

Velasco started seven games for the Panthers last year, and was in camp with the Titans this year but was released on Aug. 30. He played with the Titans previously (2008-12) and did a year with the Steelers as well.

With Chandler out for the year and rookie tackle Daryl Williams expected to miss a month with an MCL sprain, the Panthers are thin at tackle, and will need guard Amini Silatolu to stand in as the third behind starters Michael Oher and Mike Remmers.

  1. Oh really? I called for new OL help after Kalil was hurt in preseason and his backup, Folkert was waived due to injury.

Gettleman, step away from the donuts. While other teams take in vets because of non guaranteed contracts, ya still don’t go after any WR help.

  2. Gettleman needs some of those draft picks that he traded up four to choose chumps who are not doing much of anything. Trust me…Gettleman is no genius and his trade up style drafts are turning out to be a disaster.

  3. That’s a good dude. Kind of wishing the Titans had kept him for depth (re-signing him after week 1 to avoid the guaranteed salary), but hopefully if anyone on the interior goes down for the Titans, the untested kids who flashed in camp can step up.

May not blow your socks off but I think Velasco is good veteran insurance.

So let me see if I have this straight…. DG traded up to get Funchess and Williams. Williams is hurt and Funchess didn’t get thrown to. In WEEK ONE.

And that’s enough to reach the final conclusion that they aren’t doing much of anything?

Dude, chill. Make that declaration in November.
