No excuse to be deflated at Bills-Patriots game Sunday

Getty Images

They’re planning on pumping up more than the volume at Ralph Wilson Stadium Sunday.

According to Lauren Hall of WIVB in Buffalo, the Bills are tweaking the Patriots in perhaps the least subtle way possible, by selling air pumps in the team store.

[tweet https://twitter.com/laurenhallnews4/status/644857940885794816%5D

Of course, they won’t directly invoke #DeflateGate, as retail manager Jason Klein told Hall that the pumps were available “in case anybody needs to inflate their football” in the parking lot.

Right.

While the Bills are feeling good after rolling the Colts last week, they’re also tempting fate. Tom Brady and his team have generally performed well when challenged, so taking shots at them left and right this week might only serve to get their attention.

  1. A blowhard coach who hasn’t won squat since he’s been a HC, but still trying to keep his name in the news. His Super Bowl I guess is Sunday!! He’s a character no doubt, but his act has gotten stale now. He’s really half a coach, and he’ll never win the Big Game.m

  2. Don’t worry, after the Bills lose, there will be plenty of excusess being made. Rex is the king of Moral Victories. Why else would someone with a 4-9 record against the Patriots claim he has been fairly successful against them? 1-7 in his last 8 games.

  3. Brady is 23-2 vs the Toronto Arg…I mean Buffalo Bills.

Not worried. Everyone was spouting about the Bills defense last year and the Pats went in there and dropped 30+ on them like it ain’t no thang.

  4. New England has ran rough shot over the Bills for the last 15 years.let them get in there little kids games and tidlywinks….games are played betwenn the lines and games are played in September and October……Good games are played in December and January…If the playoffs were Halloween the Bills would be fine…..I will take my Patriots for long sustained success over a guy with a bigmouth who bites off year after year what his team can chew….the Bills are no different…..Rex will never be quiet and that puts his teams in the crosshairs….he will never learn

  5. That’s cute. Meanwhile the Patriots plan on bringing out all 4 Super Bowl trophies when they play the Bills later this season to represent the Bills 4 Super Bowl’s that they lost. 0-4 in back-to-back-to-back-to-back Super Bowls . Pathetic.

  6. The gift shop might be a different animal but I love that Rex and his players talks trash like its supposed to be done. None of this wimpy stuff about warm gatorade and shifting your line when its not gentlemanly to do so.

  7. Buffalo,

WELCOME BACK TO THE NFL – it must have been a rough 20 years for you in the CFL

welcome back, Welcome Back, WELCOME BACK!!!!

you might be almost relevant again!!!

  8. This reminds me of 2012 when the Texans were running their mouths before a Patriots game, and bought letterman jackets for everyone on the team.
    Despite the jackets,Houston lost 42-14.
    Expect similar results Sunday.

  9. Oh great, one of the poorest cities in the country is going to have people blowing their last $20 on air pumps that they can wave around while they watch their team lose.

  10. I truly thought the Bills and their fans were above this cheesiness. This feels more like a tone deaf publicity stunt you’d see in an NFL backwater, like Miami.

  11. C’mon fellow Pats fans this is funny. Just like the Pats hat on the Ralph Wilson statue.

We can’t expect Bills fans to have a sense or humor if we don’t.

  12. I really hope the Bills straight up curb stomp these clowns. I think it’s about time for that to happen to them. Most people in this great nation can’t stand a cheater and I think Buffalo is poised to put a big smile on the face of every American who values fairness and sportsmanship and hates lying and cheating.

  13. Get ready Patriots fans, this is going to happen everywhere you play on the road. We know what you did!

I think they should also hand out ventriloquist dummies dressed up in judge’s robes, sitting on Robert Kraft’s lap.

  14. I’m a 55 year pats fan…I was born the week before their very first game….

That said,,,it’s not wise to poke the bear,,,thats all I’m saying,,,just 12 mos ago…people backed a truck load of Trash talk on Tom..and the result of pissing off the PATRIOTS was a SUPERBOWL…..so keep going REX,,

  15. As a Bills fan I have absolutely hated this week. The Bills via just one win have effectively become the Jets team that Ryan coached which I hated. And all the reasons I hated them for, the Bills have displayed this week.

Chandler Jones is right. Shut up and play.

  16. “None of this wimpy stuff about warm gatorade and shifting your line when its not gentlemanly to do so.”

Are you kidding me ? Shifting your line when its “not gentlemanly” are you freaking kidding me ?

Every football team for a length of time longer than anyone in the league today has been alive has used defensive shifts.

What would you like the Pats to do ? Say “excuse me other team, we’re going to shift our defensive line now, please adjust your offensive players so you can stop us ?

Its just plain pathetic the things opposing fans are complaining about now.

And if you want to talk Gatorade how about they learned that one from the Colts ? In the 2006 AFC Championship game in Indy the Colts new several critical Pats players had the flu, turned up the heat in the dome to 90 degrees and turned off the cold water in the Pats locker room.

Oh it was the Indianapolis Marshmellos so it was perfectly acceptable of course.

  17. Nobody is scared of this Pats team. They are who they have always been, an average team. The big difference is they no longer gets sweetheart calls from the Ref’s.

  18. Ummm – are Bills fans under the impression that these stunts and expected name calling will somehow HURT the Pats and help the Bills?

    This team THRIVES on that

Bring it on – and thank you Bills Fans for inspiring the Pats to a win!

(But bonus points to Buffalo for having done fun with it and getting creative!)

First you talk tough, then you talk about the rules of Golf. This is football, defensive line shifts take place in every game and have for eons, you have just exposed yourself as not being as “tough” as you want to portray.

Cant wait to see the Cheaters fumble stats at the end of the season…..

What will you say when it is consistent with what they have been for the prior years? Will you admit you are wrong and that the Pats did not cheat? As I recall many claimed Brady could not throw a properly inflated football. He looked really good in the Superbowl and last week in the rain completed 19 straight passes. I expect that you will just change names in troll in some other fashion.

  21. Brady vs. Bills : 23-3

    That’s 88%.

That’s Larry Bird’s career free throw percentage.

Would you have ever bet on Larry Legend to miss a free throw?

And that 23-3 record includes the loss in game 16 last year, after home field was locked up, which was treated like a preseason game #4 by the Patriots: Don’t get hurt, get the starters out, & don’t show anything.

    ————————
you mean like the non-holding call on Gronk against Carolina from a few years back. Or the non-call on Talib in the AFC championship game? Such a loser mentality, “the ref’s screwed us”, how are your headsets working?

  23. “Curb stomp those clowns.” Once you have said that you have proven that you have no sportsmanship.

Rex Ryan is a big fat jerk and the game should be a hell of a lot of fun.

  24. So what happens if the Pats lay their usual beat down on the Bills on Sunday? This team and fan base have whipped up emotion to such a point that I fear for the safety of thousands of upstate New Yorkers if/when they realize changing the coach doesn’t change the fact that you need a QB in the NFL.

Don’t get me wrong, I would not be surprised if the Bills win on Sunday — the Pats almost always struggle in Sept as they mix and match their rotations looking for the right fit. BB uses Sept like the pre-season.

Just wondering if it’s really wise to give the Pats extra incentive to treat this game like it is a big one.

  25. Ummm – are Bills fans under the impression that these stunts and expected name calling will somehow HURT the Pats and help the Bills?

Why does everything have to be about you pats fans? What’s the matter, can’t take a little joke?

I, for one, think this is hilarious and I’m glad we finally have an owner who gets it.

  26. Oh, for Heaven’s sake, Pats fan here….we don’t care. Let’s just play football. The Bills look like they have a good team this year, the Pats will be playing their all…..can we let the drivel stop?

  27. Belichick is a genius, Rex Ryan is a dunce. Rex Ryan’s Super Bowl is in September every year.

And that’s why Rex Ryan came into Foxboro with Mark Sanchez and won in the playoffs.

The Bills might lose this game – if they do, the season isn’t over. When two good teams face off, one of them will lose.

  28. Actually I have no problem with what the Bills are selling at theri Pro shop. Sounds like good marketing to me.’

The fact is that THIS game IS a must win game for the Bills. They have everything going perfectly for them. They get the Pats at home and get to play against an OL starting not only 3 rookies, but not any “elite” rookies (two 4th rounders, and a UDFA).

They did OK in the first game, but that was at home. In their 2nd game, they will be going against arguably the best DL in the league with Darius returning.

So ALL of the pressure is on the Bills this week. They have the perfect situation to beat the Pats, and if they don’t win here, they certainly won’t win when they play in Foxboro later in the season when the Pats OL issues will be much more settled.

Given the situation and how early it is in the season, this could be one of the 3 toughest tests the Pats have this regular season. If they lose, so what? The Pats always play their best football after Thanksgiving. Just look at last season and several other season where the Pats started slowly.

If the Bills lose it will likely mean the end of their hopes to win the division (even this early). They HAVE to win. Lots of pressure on Rex and his team.

It should be one of the better games this year. One that will come down to turnovers and injuries, It’s been a LONG time since a Bills game was this much fun.,

  29. Wow…..most of you Patriot fans don’t have a sense of humor, grow a pair will ya? I thought it was funny about the Ralph Wilson hat and I think this is funny too. …………………
Go read the 538 article that breaks down the Pats stats for the last several years….away and home games almost identical. One line from the article: “Stats disprove cheating allegations against the Patriots.”

  32. “you mean like the non-holding call on Gronk against Carolina from a few years back. Or the non-call on Talib in the AFC championship game?”

Not to mention the playoff games where they’re been screwed. A few examples:

    – the phantom pass interference call on Asante Samuel in the divisional game against Denver in 2005. That call resulted in a TD for Denver and totally swung the momentum in Denver’s favor.

    – numerous calls in the 2006 AFC Championship game against Indy. There was the bogus interference call against Ellis Hobbs in the end zone that led to a Colts TD (the league later admitted that that call was wrong). Then there was the non-call when Reche Caldwell was blatantly interfered with in the endzone – that cost the Pats 4 points, since they had to settle for a FG. And of course the bogus roughing the passer call. The league honchos were REALLY intent on making sure choke artist Manning finally got a ring.

    – in the SB 46, there was the bogus intentional grounding call on Brady that resulted in an early safety that set the tone for the game.

If these are “sweetheart” calls then all I can say is..PLEASE, stop helping us!

  33. This is hilarious!!! I’m a Fins fan (read: hate both these teams) but I am loving this!

    For the record:

Selling air-pumps in your pro shop = all in good fun.

Putting your hat on the statue of the other teams dead founder = not cool.

  34. Rex Ryan is obsessed with the Patriots, which is fine, but he really should worry about what happens on the field. This high school trash talk and selling junk to the fans is not going to rattle the Patriots in the least.

  35. This is what you have to do to get “pumped up” when you are a fan of a team with a collection of hot air and dust in the empty trophy case……..#INFLATETHATJILLSFANS.

    It is definitely funny.

  41. Why is this such a big deal to Patriots fans? It’s like there overcome with guilt and hiding it by lashing out, can’t understand why. Seriously though, what do the Bills have to lose by stirring the pot for this game? Nobody gives them any credit so if they lose it’ll just be “same old Bills”. However, if they win, and it’s not far fetched at all to think they won’t, it will make it that much sweeter. Everybody is ragging on the Colts and saying it doesn’t mean much to beat them. Andrew Luck, right now, is head and shoulders above Brady in terms of skill at the QB position. Not a knock on Tom, but the dudes 38. Arms not the same, even less mobile now. However, he has a better team and he can pick you apart with the superb abilities he still possesses. With that said, The Bills shut down Luck and will have similar success on Sunday. It’s a matter of the offense taking advantage of what our defense will give them. If they can’t do anything with the Ball, Jimmy G. could suit up and still win this game for them. Hopefully Tyrod will Strut his stuff and take the Ball to the Joint… Mechanic humor, sorry.

    ————-

    What?

I’d hate to know what a team would have to do to be considered above average in your opinion. People have to let go of the calls thing. Every fan thinks their teams get jobbed on every call. Patriots fans think the same. It’s not true. Bad calls go both ways and aside from a few calls a year the officials are very good.

  44. “I was saying I appreciate that Rex and his players keep their trash talking to the field. Teams that trash talk by whining about warm gatorade or headsets, line shifts or whatever esp. after a loss, are really pathetic.”

Fair enough. Forgive me as some of the things I see people complaining about the Pats are beyond ridiculous and its hard not to dump on them sometimes.

  45. Reaching into the cage to tease the tiger. Not too bright Rex. Some things never change.

As for Patriots hat on Ralph Wilson statue, laying odds Rex was behind that also.

Can’t wait to see Rex skulk out to midfield for post-game handshake, head bowed and shoulders slumped.

Feel sorry for you Bills fans.

  46. Yes, the Pats are going to get ‘revved’ up due to a cute joke made by a guy who works at the pro shop next to the stadium.

Anyone who thinks this has any push on the outcome of the game, probably has never played (or doesn’t watch much football).

The fans need to grow thicker skin. Many teams have an unfavorable ‘identity’, just shrug it off. Until the Bills win a superbowl, the rest of the country will view them as ‘0-4’ in SB’s. The rest of the country view the Pats as successful cheaters. Neither view is positive, but doesn’t effect the home town fan’s enjoyment. Just roll with it.

I have to think that’s the kind of thing most real football people would understand and appreciate. If someone put a Lakers jacket on the statue of Larry Bird, I’d think it was funny and done in the spirit of good, honest trash talk. It’s the constant accusations, the calls for teams (mostly the Pats) to be kicked out of the league, the assertions that all the our accomplishments should be vacated….I’ll take a hat on a statue any day and expect that your team should take it out on us on the field and vice versa.

Absolutely. The Bills clearly have their players/coaches working week days in the Pro Shop pulling end cap hijinx, while the Patriot players are singularly focused on game preparation.

It’s just like smug Tammy claimed in his response to the Bills fans hating on the Patriots. Clearly the Patriots are the only team who focuses on game preparation, while remaining clear of any distractions.

  51. Rex Ryan. Has there ever been any coach who is more famous or gets more attention while being a complete failure as a coach? Maybe if he’d pay more attention to coaching his team than to stupid antics and sucking toes, he could actually win something.

  52. You guys are idiots if you think Rex has anything to do with what is sold in the gift shop. Btw other teams sell air pumps in their gift shops too even before deflate gate.

  53. Seeing the Patriots fans lose their minds over this is what makes it totally worth it.

  65. Just be ready for Rex’s “Line up the coaches to trip opposing players” routine

Now I know having coaches actually trip players in the middle of games (like Tomlin did too) doesn’t compare to the loss of PSI by half a pound due to the cold, but it’s still cheating

But of course when the Bills or Jets cheat no one cares – mainly because they’re irrelevant

But that doesn’t mean Rex isn’t a bigger cheater than anyone in the league

In fact I can’t think of much worse than interfering with an active play

Own it Bills fans – your coach cheats

  66. Everyone ask yourself:

Would Belichick allow this type of stunt?

The answer of course is “no”

Typical LOSER… Can’t beat Brady on the sham scandal. Can’t beat Brady with properly inflated football. Can’t win against Brady fairly so you want him INJURED. Take Brady out of the field at all cost. We know that’s the only way to level the playing field for you LOSERS. We are flattered… You and the other losers’ wish to injure Brady, no matter how despicable, is the ultimate validation of Brady’s greatness.

  71. I seriously doubt that Rex had anything to do with what’s being sold at the Bills store that these Patriot fans are giving him the credit for.
These are changing times, and this isn’t the Jets they’re playing Sunday, this is a Bills team with a defense that the Jets never had in previous Rex Ryan coached teams. We’ll see on the field Sunday. New England is one bad call by Seattle and Pete Carroll from having lost their previous 3 Super Bowls appearances.

You can expect stuff like this for the next decade at a minimum.

It’s already been about a decade that this jealousy-driven “hate” has been going on, so how’s that working for you? Us? We’re good.

  73. The Patriots ALWAYS generally perform well, whether challenged or not. Do you really think Brady or anyone else on the Patriots aren’t up for a divisional game and THIS is what will get them over the hump to perform? Seriously, come-on man!

  74. The only team to lose 4 SB in a row razzing another team? Now that’s what losers do. Tell Kelly and that band of losers they are still losers. Lmao!

The Bills aren’t the brightest bunch, nothing like getting the Pats more pumped up.

I’m sure you didn’t mean it to be but that was very “punny”

  77. Finally, a competitive football game!! (Maybe) Week 2 and already tired of Jags vs Tampa, or Browns vs Raiders. None of these teams really want to win. Why do some have to watch that crap?

With their porous run defense that is likely to happen again should they play.
