Cardinals improve to 2-0 with a beatdown of the Bears

AP

The Cardinals took the opening kickoff back for a 108-yard touchdown and never looked back in today’s win over the Bears.

Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald caught three touchdown passes, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was knocked out of the game trying to make a tackle on a pick-six, and basically everything went right for the Cardinals while everything went wrong for the Bears. Arizona won 48-23.

It was a vintage game for Fitzgerald, who caught eight of the nine passes thrown to him for 112 yards. He may no longer be the player he once was, but he’s capable of playing at a very high level. He proved that today.

For the Bears, the most disappointing part of the loss is the injury to Cutler, who was actually off to a very good start before he threw that interception that became his last pass of the day. Jimmy Clausen struggled in relief of Cutler, and if Cutler is out for any significant length of time, things could get ugly in Chicago for the 0-2 Bears.

But things are looking sunny in Arizona for the 2-0 Cardinals. On a day when the Rams and 49ers lost, Arizona is now alone in first place in the NFC West.

  1. I am not so sure that things would turn ugly without Cutler. Bears are bad, maybe even very bad, with our without him and inching closer to a very high draft pick and, say, Connor Cook, would not be a bad outcome at all!!!
P.S.: no criticism whatsoever aimed at Cutler with this post, btw

  2. Sure glad the Bears got rid of Trestman and hired Fox. Fox is showing us the meaning of D and how good Robbie Gold is. What was Denver thinking about? Wonder who the Bears will play in their first game in September 2018?

  3. I wouldn’t say everything went right for the Cardinals. A muffed punt & Int led to points to end the half for the Bears. A blown coverage where no one covered a WR which led to a long TD.

There is enough there for Arians to keep the team hungry & motivated.

  4. I had honestly expected to avoid any more Trestman esque meltdown games now with legit coaches on staff, but oh well whatever I guess.

As for the Cards, hats off. Arians clearly had a message to send to the Bears org for not hiring him (as seen by leaving Palmer in and passing when the game was well in hand), and you delivered it convincingly. Lots of talent on that roster and heart to go with it.

  5. Cutler would have found a way to lose this game if he’d have stayed in the game. He may be the most overrated and overpaid player in the history of the league other than Kevin Kolb.

  6. Clausen: 14/23 for 121 yards – 1 pick – 56.6 Rating

    Cutler – 8/9 for 120 yards – 1 TD, 1 INT – 116.2 Rating

Hopefully this will shut up the dumbs who were calling for Clausen in the offseason/1st game.

  7. Cutler and Forte are the Bears best DEFENSIVE players. They kept the Pack off the field last week. The Bears ‘held’ GB to ‘only’ 31 points, but only because the Pack had only 7 possessions. SEVEN. (Not including kneeldowns) The average per game is 13. If the Bears defensive is on the field alot, ALOT of points will be scored.

  8. Cutler needs to renegotiate, he taking too much money and that D is terrible

Gosh, what a swell idea. Cutler is such a nice man. I am sure he will go to the Bears and give them lots of money back. Great idea! You must be a successful business man.

  9. Cards fan since 1970 and have high expectations for this squad. I do question keeping in Palmer for entire game (less against risk of injury and more to get Stanton some game time).

Solid effort on the road. Special teams. Offense. Defense. A few breakdowns, but overall, they’ll beat most teams in the league playing like they did today.

They’ll get Iupati and Ellington back next week at home vs. San Fran. Should be good game.

  10. I’m pretty sure Kyle Fuller got benched in the 4th after yet another terrible game. I hate to think of a 3 or 4 win season being the ceiling but this team needs talent upgrades all over the place.. more than can be done in anorher offseason. If Fox and Fangio need to fiddle with the lineup every game this year to find the combination that sucks the least so Pace knows how to prioritize our 2016 draft I’m totally OK with that. It’s the bill for a bunch of awful Angelo and Emery drafts coming due.

  11. 10-6 not good enough! The ungratefuls deserve all the losing seasons that are coming. My guess is after 4 more measurable seasons you all will be begging Jim Harbaugh to come save the Bears from a decade of losing. And then of course, after he gets the team to a Super Bowl and a couple of conference championship games but hits a rough patch the same geniuses who demanded Lovie’s firing will also demand Harbaugh’s firing! lol

  12. This team is abysmal. It’s a wonder why Cutler doesn’t just walk away. He’ll take the brunt of the criticism in Chicago all week long..again. People blame him for his 1 turnover that cost the team to lose by 20?

That secondary is a disgrace. The rest of the D is average at best and whoever is at QB is throwing to WR’s that wouldn’t make anyone else’s squad. Yet, again the only thing they have going for them is Forte.

Hate to agree when someone called 5 wins this year. It looks that way.

  13. Bengals fan here, glad to see Carson doing well for himself in Arizona where he has no huge egos like Ocho and TO around him yapping in his ear. Him quitting on the Bengals is what sent them the message that things have to change and they finally woke up and started getting high character guys like AJ, Andy, Gio, etc. Good luck Carson just stay healthy.

  14. 2 down 14 to go! BIRDGANG!!!

I never thought I’d say this , thanks Pitt for yanking those Whiners back to earth.

  15. 2 games 0 sacks. The Bears CBs range from barely capable to awful but without a lot more heat on the QB than that, even a solid D Backfield would struggle.

  16. The Cutler injury doesn’t make sense to me. he either got a concussion on the helmet to helmet hit he took earlier or a concussion when he went to make the tackle. But they are saying a hamstring? Something doesn’t sound right. it almost seems Cutler has personal issues that are being covered up and not his Diabetes either.

Why don’t you root for the Cardinals then? That way you can spew your negativity on their comment board? Lowered expectations? What a load of crap. Your comments show that you never have had any positive expectations for this team.

  18. The Cards are looking pretty dang strong, and it looks like the Bears just don’t have the horses on D right now.

On the Bear fan in-fighting, it seems to me Indybear that your posts similarly are limited to negatively trashing bassplucker. Lighten up man — comment boards are for fan opinions — both negative and positive.

  19. @Indybear:

Exactly right and well said. He already spews his negative crap on Bucs boards and I’m here calling him out on it. I do not take joy in the Bears losing, I just realize that it goes deeper than one man to blame. Bass plucker, you sir are a football halfwit. Open mouth, insert foot.

My posts are not nearly limited to trashing bassplucker because it appears there are plenty of others taking turns. However, I will always respond to his/her ignorance and constant negativity. That makes it almost a full-time job.

  21. Indybear……..

You description of Bassplucker is right on target. Keep it up
He posts 4-5 times regarding the same article. All he is doing is taking up space.
And I don’t think he knows if he is coming or going.
