Patriots hold on for 40-32 win in Buffalo

Getty Images

Things looked very good for the Patriots before getting cloudy in the fourth quarter, but they were able to weather the storm and finish off a 40-32 win that improved their record to 2-0 on the young season.

The end came when Logan Ryan picked off a Tyrod Taylor pass with just over a minute left in a game that saw the Bills rally to cut the Patriots’ lead from 24 points to five points in the fourth quarter. The Patriots ended the run of unanswered Bills points with a Stephen Gostkowski field goal just before Ryan’s interception. The kick capped a drive that featured Tom Brady completing four passes to bounce back after a fumble earlier in the quarter set up a Sammy Watkins touchdown catch.

Brady finished the day with 466 passing yards, which is the second-best total in his career, and threw three touchdown passes while the Patriots were building their 37-13 lead over the home team. While Brady was doing that, the Patriots defense was sacking Taylor eight times and intercepting him twice on a day that proved that Week One results aren’t promises for future success.

Taylor was resilient enough to throw two touchdowns and run for another in the fourth quarter, however, and pushing themselves back into the game gives the Bills something to feel good about on a day when not much went right. In addition to the turnovers, pass protection problems and eviscerated secondary, they also committed 14 penalties for 140 yards that they really could have used to make it a more competitive game for the entire 60 minutes.

With Brady playing the way he’s playing, that might not have been possible. He’s now 63-of-91 for 754 yards and seven touchdowns on the season, numbers that compare favorably to his start to the 2007 season that stands as Brady’s finest in the NFL. To date, anyway.

  1. Check the footballs, check the videotapes. New England Patriots*, cheating/liars. These wins are tainted. I can’t wait for the Redskins to go into Gillete and beatdown those cheaters. Matt Jones will doing the Gator chop ALL DAY in the Endzone.

  2. This is what I’m talking about. This guy.

Patriots are going down Sunday just like they did last December when Brady and his 1st team played the whole first half 3-17. difference here is Brady and Co will play the entire game and still go down……your dynasty is over Pats fans….

See. Run the yap and you get owned.

  3. Patriots kept Buffalo in game as long as they could but in the end won as usual. Give that Buffalo vaunted defense credit they held them to under 50 points. Typical Rex Ryan undisciplined team.

  4. Going for it 2 times 4th and 1 near midfield allowed them back in this game. Bellichick will clean up those mistakes. He was going for the jugular there.

  5. Lost their SB in Week 2.
Meet the new boss, SAME AS THE OLD BOSS!
More schadenfreude for the NE fans.

  6. Game 1: 288 yds/4 TD/0 INT
    Game 2: 466 yds/3 TD/0 INT

Incredible incompetence by the NFL in allowing the balls to continue to be illegally deflated. 466 yards, Brady must have had the balls at 0.5 PSI! You’d think they’d be looking out for that. I bet they taped the Bills walk through and jammed their headsets too.

  7. Week 1: “We want Brady! We want Brady!” We’re planning out the super bowl parade and we are gonna beat the pats by 30!!!

    Week 2: “…… …… ……”

Anyone heard from the bills fans? I figure we are about 3 minutes away from the excuse making. The refs helped the pats (you know, since it was the Pats worst game for penalties in 8 years).

  8. But but but…this buffalo defense is awesome!!! And tyrod taylor is so amazing!!!

There may be a reason nobody else considered him a starter.

  9. How do you surrender 32 points to a team like the Bills? Deep playoff teams don’t have defenses like this. Brady’s hopes of winning a legit championship is dwindling.

  10. Yeah but, did the measure the weight of the footballs? Did Buffalo’s headsets go out (even though they were running them)? Were the Pats taping signals?

You mean, they just beat down the Bills? Who would have thought it possible?

  11. The Bills play their Super Bowl in September; the Patriots play theirs in February.

The Bills troll the Patriots by selling air pumps; the Patriots troll the Bills by selling Super Bowl Champion merchandise.

Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose.

  12. 466yds this week, franchise consecutive-completions record last week – how’s that deflated balls theory working for you Roger? What’s that? – I can’t hear you – still nothing, hang on I’ll try another headset. Nope, still nothing…..

  13. Brady is simply and unequivocally the GOAT. That, we all know. It’s the rest of the team that plays with machine like precision.
    Bills fan.

  14. Rex had his team so jacked up they made mental mistakes. All the time they wasted trash talking could have been better utilized by preparing for the actual game.

  15. Giving up good field position to Brady early really hurt. I am encouraged by the 4th quarter play of the Bills.

Good game, Pats. See you week 11.

  16. As a die hard Bills fan I gotta take a moment to step back and give it up to Brady. He’s been killin us for years and nothing has changed. With that being said, I’m proud of the effort the Bills put out there. But it wasn’t enough to take down the power house of the NFL.

  17. My pre-game well wish to Buffalo fans that there be no injuries did not come to be – here’s hoping Williams is OK, though Buffalo was more in control after he left the game

Beyond that, Buffalo coaches, players, and fans should remember that smack talk and boasting isn’t boasting if you can back it up

If you can’t you’re just pathetic

Credit to the team for not giving up – but they played like their coach’s personality for most of the game. Out of control

  18. I can’t wait to hear the losers lament on this one. How did the Pats cheat? The Bills will think of something.

Wrecks Ryan, mouth writing checks his team can’t cash.

Jills had everything in their favor today and still lost. It’s what happens when you spend 34% of your cap on 4 dlinemen.

  19. Did all you moronic haters really think the GREAT Tom Brady needed 0.02 pi to dominate the league he has owned since 2001. Hahahahahahhahaha.

The GOAT isn’t going anywhere. Brady owned the alleged best defense in the league and the NFL should be very scared of what’s to come.

  20. Maybe Sexy Rexy will learn to keep his big mouth shut?
Yak yak yak ! Really tough defense, he thought. More like Swiss cheese. Brady on a role with all his weapons.
Maybe Buffalo fans will find that 2nd place is where the Bill’s belong and they will find some consolation in being ahead of the dolphins and jets.
    Go Pat’s.

  21. Pats loudmouths wetting their drawers at the end. Nice to have refs in your pockets. Watkins called for PI when he didn’t touch the guy. Sketchy calls in Pats favor all game. That, and you’re still cheaters. No one respects you. No one.

  22. The defensive genius with the stacked roster gave up 40 points and 500+ yards at home against the hated rival in a game they had been pointing toward for months and yapping about for a week.

  23. After Rex ran his mouth all week, the much-hyped Bills defense gave up over 500 yards and 40 points playing at home.

Makes the Steelers holding the Pats to 28 points last week in Foxborough look pretty respectable.

  24. elevandoo says:

Jdblasi. Chill. Buffalo’s got this. Pats fans will still talk crap after losing, enjoy it. Don’t set the bar low, bills have a good team, everyone knows it.

    Nice prediction, genius

  25. Uncle buck and the rest of the Pats trolls must live very boring and unhappy lives. I couldn’t imagine visiting every story about a team I don’t like to talk smack just to try and rile up people I don’t know and will never meet. Sad existence. These are the type of people we see in sports bars that need attention and everyone despises.

  26. Lack of discipline, what Rex Ryan teams will always be remembered for.

Maybe if they actually shut up during the week and spent the time yapping on working on fundamentals they might be a much better team.

Plus after talking themselves into a frenzy during the week they lost it when things started to go wrong for them and the unsportsmanlike penalties started flying.

Bills have a lot of good players. But if the Pats D hadn’t gone to sleep for much of the 4th quarter the game would never have gotten even vaguely close.

Ask the Jests fans, Rex ‘s mouth grows old & annoying FAST.
Hope Williams is Ok, hate to see anyone hurt, even a loud mouth.

  29. You just got to love the trolls. Pats beat Bills fair and square. Bills D is apparently overrated. Hey, I get it, I despised the Cowboys back in the day of Aikman, Smith and Irving when they were winning everything but I never thought they were cheating. Now it’s our turn to enjoy athe winning after suffering through early years of awful teams. Someday our run will come to and end and it will be someone else’s turn. Until the Go Patriots, let the lesser teams that can’t compete hate.

Three fumbles in first two games after four fumbles all of last year.

Apparently inflated footballs are harder to hold on to.

Keep up the good fight little guy.

  31. “Three fumbles in first two games after four fumbles all of last year.

Apparently inflated footballs are harder to hold on to.”

Since 2 of them were by a player that was not with the Pats last year you can’t included them in this conversation.

And the 3rd one was a strip sack of Brady not a running back or receiver fumble, and any QB in the league would have lost it from that hit.

Thanks for playing though. Next time please study the actual facts before posting.

  32. In week 2 you don’t read too much into anything. That includes how sloppy this game was on both sides.

Still, divisional road wins are nice, especially when you are going up against the best (self-proclaimed) defense in the league.

To their credit, they did hold Brady under 500 yards passing.

  33. Impressive that the Pats are 2-0 with that defense.

Back to back weeks they put up huge numbers but only win by one score because their defense is so bad.

Gotta think that catches up with them at some point.

  34. Brady 754 yards 7 TD 0 INTs 🙂 On pace for an NFL record in passing yards and passer rating.

Cmon Patriot hater entertain us. We want to get in your grill and laugh in your face. Tell us again that Brady can’t throw inflated footballs. Tell us that your team belongs on the field with US.

    🙂

  35. Okay, who the heck was that impersonating Belichick in the 4th quarter? His decisions single handedly almost cost the Patriots the game. Could it be that the hoodie in his quest to shove it down Rex’s throat temporally lost his legendary discipline? C’mon Bill, you’re better than that. All that said……Hey Bills fans? SHUT UP!

  36. At this point it looks like the only team that can stop the Patriots is Denver. I would include the Cowboys but they are missing Dez. The rest will be ran over.

  37. As for the Bills….

Tyrod Taylor… not impressed. He won’t make it to midseason as starter.

Oh look. Another comment from a Patriot hater who doesn’t watch the game. While you blather about some lunacy based on made up accusations, I’ll continue to watch some of the best football that has ever been played. This is one of those games. Spectacular performance by both teams and the most amazing play won.

  40. Teams without discipline,,,do not win vs good teams in NFL.

Buffalo….WANTED BRADY…you got him…Be careful what you wish for.

That may have been one of worst coaching jobs I’ve ever seen Rexy…Cmon man…20 penalties????? Yoiur team played like a jilted girlfriend.

  42. “Back to back weeks they put up huge numbers but only win by one score because their defense is so bad.”

Yeah, 8 sacks, 3 INTs and 2 forced fumbles is just plain awful.

They went to sleep for much of the 4th quarter in garbage time but were great most of the game.

They do need to learn how to close games out but Belichcik will beat that into them soon.

  43. Rex is the only coach that can break your heart multiple times in the same game. The Sanchz Era will start again soon.

As for Brady, he still can’t throw a regulation football, aside from winning the Super Bowl, then breaking the franchise record for consecutive completions against the Steelers, then having one of the highest yardage totals ever against the Bills on the road. Haters still learn nothing.

  44. Another day in the park for the G.O.A.T.. 466 yards 3 TD passes 0 interceptions. Wow those properly inflated balls really makes a difference..NOT…this team is winning SB #..back to back baby!!

  45. I guess some steelers fans don’t realize any team in the arc north would only be the 5th best team in the aft east….they will though after each beat down they get

  46. Brady through 2 games: 63-91, 754 yrds, 7 tds, 0 picks.

The Patriots are going scorched earth this year, just like 2007. The only reason the Bills score was close was that the patriots tried to run up the score towards the end and got a little careless with the football. Brady will probably throw for 400+ and 4-5 tds next week against The Jags.

Using the cherry picking method employed in the debunked study to which you are no doubt referring, there would have been two fumbles so far this year. He only counted fumbles lost.
So there was the one Lewis fumble (not on the team last year) and one strip sack.
Plus, you are missing the most important point:
    THE BALLS WERE NOT DEFLATED.

    Sad really. Quite pathetic.

  54. Hey Rex, why don’t you make some more jokes about how the Steelers played Gronk. Let’s see, how many MORE points did your defense give up to New England than the Steelers did?

    Can’t handle facts, huh?

So for all the years before the rule changed when the Pats avgd a fumble for 44 plays, must have had the exact same players at every position, every year.

Then overnight must have got rid of the fumblers and had the exact same players at every position since the bathroom breaks when Pats have avgd 1 per 75 plays?

And darn it, now they brought back fumblers just coincidentally starting this year?

Oh yeah, and Brady hasn’t been strip sacked EVER in the last 7 years until today.

Never thought Brady was the reason for deflated balls. It was Belicheat and it was for fumbling.

3 fumbles in two games or 1 every 38 plays.

Interesting coincidence. Can’t wait for bad weather games.

  84. The Patriots are an overrated team who’ve gone 2-0 thanks to an opponent who lost the game for them, and the Buffalo Bills. Their secondary is a joke without Revis, and they will be exposed as the season goes on.

When the Steelers meet them in the playoffs this time with Bell and Bryant in the lineup, they will easily brush past this band of has-been headset screwer-withers, and cruise into Golden Super Bowl 50. Bank it.

  85. “These comments are why people hate the Patriot fans. You don’t show any class when you win.”

Every week Pats fans have to listen to an insane level of trash talking from each team’s fans that we play. That goes on all week before the game and most of the time very few come back to eat their crow after the Pats beat them.

So somehow that’s “classy” but doing so now isn’t ?

Either you want to talk trash and you get what you deserve, or you never talk trash and just talk about football with whatever few reasonable fans of the other team turn up.

  87. Probably the best stat from this game:

Brady’s 466 passing yards is the most the Bills have ever given up.

    Nice.

  88. greatest team ever to play this game, it’s not even close. You don’t belong in the same field with pats, Truth.

And oh, to the ” we want Brady” chant crowd, be careful what you wish for. when you mess with bull, you get to deal with the horns.

Dream on. The score was only close because Belichick got to cute trying to run the score up. If we hadn’t gone for those 2 4 and 1’s, it would have been a 3 score difference at the end. The Bills didn’t shred anything.

You’re Full of it “secondary got shredded” he had 89 passing yards at the end of the 3rd Q.

All his yards came late in the game on busted plays.

  103. I’ll agree the refs called too many penalties on both sides; but, they made no difference to the outcome of the game

It was annoying. They looked like they were trying to impress somebody.

Agreed the 4th down plays let the Bills back in it, but more often than not New England will convert those. Can’t run the Brady sneak every single time.

    ===================================
So, despite the fact that the balls weren’t actually deflated, you first told us this was a conspiracy orchestrated by Brady to help him throw the ball.

But now that that has been debunked by his epic performance in the SB, Week 1 and Week 2, you now want to argue that this was a conspiracy by Belichick to help the RBs and WRs, even though the league cleared Belichick, and suspended Brady?

Honestly, I think you’d feel a lot better if you just let this nonsense go and admit that they are better than your team.

  105. “Can’t handle facts, huh?”

I can handle the facts just fine. Unlike you i also understand statistical analysis.

Lewis who has 2 of the Pats 3 fumbles was never a Patriot before this season. Therefore there is no data of him playing with supposedly deflated balls. That makes his fumbles invalid to a comparison model.

Brady’s fumble was a type not in question. .2 psi does not effect whether the qb would fumble or not when any qb would have done so if hit like that.

None of these three fumbles is valid for tupe of comparison you are inferring.

  106. catquick says: Nice to have refs in your pockets.

Gotta love the Haters. Even after FrameGate they still insist that Goodell and the League Office LOVES the Patriots and gives them special treatment.

Wake up. Bob Kraft is the only owner to invoke Article VIII of the NFL bylaws and point out that the Commissioner lacks the “unquestioned integrity” required to be in that position.

If it wasn’t clear the Jets personnel in the NFL League Offices HATES the Patriots before, it should be now.

If the Refs did give Brady or the Pats any special treatment it’s because they know the truth. Deflategate was a frame job and Goodell slandered Brady to save his own skin.

Seriously, the Bills have, what, three wins against New England in the Belichick/Brady era? And every summer we read about how this year the Bills, Dolphins, and Jets have made huge changes to improve the team, and we hear the trash talk, and occasionally one of them wins a game, but the trash talk always keeps coming.

Rex is part of the problem. He seems to sincerely think that bravado is a key component of building a winning program. Belichick thinks the opposite. I don’t know if either is right in any kind of global sense, but certainly recent history favors Belichick.

The “fumbles that don’t count” would be part of the off base analysis that the Pats haters love to cite, which only counts fumbles LOST, does not differentiate between types of plays, does not factor in home vs. away, even though the home team controls balls, cherry picks dates and data, and makes the errant assumption that plays per fumble would be a normally distributed statistical data set.

No, pathetic is still living in the early 90’s and thinking Kelly, Thurman, Bruce, and Reed are coming back. That time has passed, but Buffalo fans still cling to it like its still happening. Look around at a game, notice how many fans still wear jerseys of those guys at the games? I bet the Kelly jerseys out number ANY of the current players. Buffalo is lost in time.

Shame on you NFL! Brady and Company are creating great highlights and you are burying them because you are still bitter about your loss to Brady in Federal Court. Brady will get another SB Ring before Goodell wins in Federal Court. Brady 4-2 in Superbowl-Goodell 0-5 in Federal Court. I can tell you which record I like better!
