John DeFilippo on Manziel’s final TD pass: Coaching is overrated

AP

When Johnny Manziel was at Texas A&M, he regularly made the highlight reel as a result of plays that couldn’t be drawn up by any coach who was trying to convince his players that he knew what he was doing.

Manziel made another play like that in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s victory over the Titans. With the Browns up 21-14, Manziel avoided a rush from Brian Orakpo, spun, rolled to his left and then fired the ball back to his right where Travis Benjamin was open for his third touchdown of the day.

Coach Mike Pettine called it “vintage Manziel,” although we haven’t seen much of that from him at the professional level. Offensive coordinator John DeFilippo had a more self-referential take on the play.

“Certainly wasn’t the way the play was designed,” Pettine said, via Cleveland.com. “I think Flip had the best line of the day on the headset after he rolled out of it, ended up throwing backwards across the field, scored the touchdown. He just says real calmly while everybody was cheering, he said ‘coaching is overrated.’ They did a nice job, brought pressure. We didn’t pick it up. Johnny did a nice job getting out of it and finding Travis and making a play.”

Pettine said Sunday that he wasn’t getting into the question of who would start once Josh McCown gets cleared to return after a concussion, but Manziel’s outing, which featured a more traditional strike to Benjamin for another touchdown, will make the call more difficult for the Browns.

  1. Have to stick with Johnny just because you took a chance at drafting him as franchise QB and since he finally have a good game feeling confident let him keep trying to build on it. Don’t sit him after playing good for somebody who didn’t just dissect the defense when he was at QB.

  2. Anyone who even thinks about starting McCown over Manziel should be fired on the spot. I’m not saying Manziel is or will be great, but at least he has a chance. McCown doesn’t

  3. I’m not sure why this is so hard on the coaching staff. McCown hasn’t shown anything in 2 years and was so bad his last team is still paying him not to play for them.

Manziel may or may not be the answer but McCown is just cashing a paycheck until retirement. Why not play Manziel and find out?

  4. Johnny made one great pass his whole career. Good job kid. Your the next GOAT. You hit a wide receiver in stride. Folks are proud Johnny. They are talking about you big time man. Nice throw. Way to really put it in there. I know its hard because its your job, but you cant coach that.(sarcasm)

  5. Manziel’s trade value will never be higher than it is right now. Somebody in the Browns organizations needs Jerry Jones on speed dial, pronto. They could get a mint for Johnny today.

  6. who called it earlier in the week that Johnny would lead the browns to a victory this week? oh yea, it was me….good work Johnny, keep it rolling next week, ur getting the nod yet again

Then you are watching a different Tom Brady than everyone else. The rest of us have never seen a player more in lock step with his coaching staff, it is one of the cornerstones of their success

Look, the coaching staff knows this. Their hemming and hawing is in my opinion a message to Manziel that he’s not going to be handed anything and he needs to continue to work hard . It’s more about keeping him in the correct mindset than anything.

  10. The Browns “Manzell” bubble bursting will be sweater to watch then the Bills losing the latest Rex Ryan early season super bowl.

At least the Buffalo isn’t a dumpster fire like the Browns.

  11. This doesn’t need to be hard. You just stick with the hot hand until it cools, then bring in the other guy. Lather, rinse, repeat. Try to make it through the season, which means trying to win one week at a time.

  12. Well, it was the Titans. But that being said, of course you start him the next game. Why wouldn’t you start him the whole season and see if he improves/develops into a real NFL QB? It’s not like your other option is getting you 6+ wins this season.

  13. Here’s hoping Johnny does a decent enough job so the Browns don’t draft Goff next year. I’d hate for a great young QB go a dumpster fire of an organization. Great state, great people, lousy owner. Browns fans have long endured pain and deserve a lot better.

  14. I don’t think you Manziel over McCown this week. Manziel had a decent game against the Titans and people are acting like he went 43-47 for 500 yards and 5 TDs and NO FUMBLES….but he didn’t – He went 8-15 for 170 yards, 2 TDs and TWO FUMBLES.

McCown is the best chance to win….period

  15. Even a blind squirrel (manziel) will find a nut once in a while. It was the Titans for Christ’s sake. You’d think he just won the AFC Championship!

  16. Calm down folks, 8/15 completions against the team which had the #2 pick in the draft is nothing to brag about. Let’s wait for more games because I am sure he will have worse days & people will be asking for McCown again.

  17. ^^ If his team had a real running game, I might agree…

They need a playmaker at QB, not a game manager. McCown isn’t much of a game manager, and he’s definitely not a playmaker…

I’m not saying Manziel is a star.. far from it. I’m saying the Browns have no reason to put a middling QB out there when they have a chance to see what Johnny can provide. I don’t even think “who gives them a better chance to win” should even be considered this year. The Browns likely aren’t winning anything this year.

  18. Stick with Manziel!!! PLEASE BROWNS MANAGEMENT!!!

Listen, I smoke and I drink, I’m getting older, and I was 4 years old the last time the Browns made it to the AFC Championship Game… which is the furthest they’ve ever been.

So, you know what I’m saying.

  19. calm down and let Johnny have his shot….he’s basically a rookie as he played what, 2 or 3 games last year , and those being drunk and who knows what else in his system….ease him in / along …. McCown is nothing but a career backup

  20. I’m not sure if the argument that it’s “only the Titans” holds up.

Tampa couldn’t score on the Titans defense.
New Orleans played about the same against the Tampa offense and the Cardinals offense.
That Cardinals offense put 48 on The Bears.

Seems by comparison, the Titans might have a decent defense, but I suppose any chance to kick Manziel.

    Well done Johnny.

  21. Yes Pettine start McCown and put another year wasted trying to see if Manziel can be a franchise qb.

Kinda feel bad for the guy. He got his life right has done the right things and when he does what he does and wins. He gets replaced .
