Pagano says Colts job is his “last job”

AP

Next week, Colts coach Chuck Pagano turns 55. By January, he could no longer be the coach of the Colts. If that happens, Pagano says he won’t resurface anywhere else.

“My plans?” Pagano told Ray Lewis on ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown. “This is my last job. And that’s what my plans are. We’ve won, and we’ll continue to do that. But when I took this thing, I said that’s my last job. And when I said that I meant it. I’m not going nowhere.”

English majors in the crowd would say that this technically means Pagano is definitely going somewhere. The real question is whether he’ll be staying where he is.

Pagano could have signed a one-year extension in the offseason, but he declined the offer. That makes it easier — and cheaper — for owner Jim Irsay to move on, if the Colts disappoint in 2015.

Some would say that Irsay wouldn’t even be firing Pagano. Instead, his contract would expire, and Irsay would decide not to renew it.

Regardless of the label applied, if Pagano means what he says, it means he won’t be resurfacing elsewhere if Irsay decides to go “big-game hunting” in the hopes of finally getting back to the biggest game in football.

  1. Irsay is becoming a jerry Jones, Dan Snyder and al Davis! They are great business men but know very little about football! Let the gm’s take over! No wonder those teams are the way the are! Can’t get over the hump!

  2. The Colts are choking. The pressure is getting to them. Penalties. Turnovers. Missed chip shot field goals.

  3. Can the Jets be better sans Rex and with Fitzpatrick than the Bills with Rex and what was a top four defense last yesr?

  4. Pagano wasn’t the coach in the Suck for Luck year. That was Jim Caldwell. Also battled Lukemia and got it in remission a couple years ago.

Kind of a hard guy to hate. Don’t blame if he walks away. Don’t hate Luck either.

Grigson and Irsay on the other hand…..

  5. “We’ve won, and we’ll continue to do that.”

Right, since sucking for Luck. And you have that sorry participation banner to show for it. Keep upholding that integrity.

  6. This is something most of these guys should do after a few years of head coaching. Take your millions and enjoy them.

  7. Well if he needs to say this just so to ease the blow when it comes to getting another head coaching job… then so be it .
Since we can assure him he wouldn’t have to worry about that, especially if the Colts don’t improve from last season.

  8. They would have never done it, but they should have kept Arians and dumped Pagano. It was clear who the better coach was.

  9. As a Pats fan, I just hope that the Colts hold onto Grigson. As long as he’s the GM, and drafting like he did this year, it won’t matter who the coach is, the Colts will just continue to spiral downward

  10. This year the Colts are aiming for a “Wild Card Participation” banner! Woo Hoo!
Now losing 10-0 to the Jests. The Colts would be better off staying out of the Northeast US and just forfeiting the games.
    Bleeping Rat Bastards!

  11. Would’ve been kind of a mean move at the time because of his health issues but they should’ve hung on to Arians instead of Pagano. Football decisions sometimes outweigh morality reasons in the NFL.

  12. Is this the same team that beat Denver in the playoffs? Embarrassing. That participation ribbon they hung from the rafters might get pretty lonely up there.

  13. With the team that’s fielded, I mean, this coaching staff is not long for this world. Hell, he might be gone before end of the year with the way this team is playing.

  14. I grew up in the same neighborhood as Chuck (in Boulder, CO) and we knew each other. He was a really a straight up good guy. His dad was a legendary high school football coach in Colorado (Sam Pagano). And his three sisters, OMG. They were hot!

If my Broncos don’t make it to the big dance, I’ll be pulling for Chuck. Colorado dudes must stick together.

Sorry but Al Davis forgot more football than any of those other owners ever knew.

  16. I apologize but Peyton was injured last year when they played denver in the playoffs. If Peyton had not been injured, Indy would have not won last year.

  17. Your thoughts about andrew luck becoming an elite quarterback? Do you agree if Indy would provide a better offensive line and defensive line, he could become an elite quarterback? Why does Indy not provide the proper protection for luck?

  18. All of these Patriots fans saying this is Karma for the Ravens:

I guess Karma for spygate was losing in the Super Bowl in 2007 and Tom Brady breaking his leg in week 1 in 2008.

So I guess that proves they did cheat.

  19. Funny a Pats fan even have the ordastiy to even speak. All the cheating your team has done. Should be more like drive for 1. Can your team win 1 championship without any cheating scandal? Don’t worry I’ll wait.

  20. If Gruden goes to the Dolts……who will tell us all how great everyone is on a Monday night??

  21. Tom Brady over rated, Your coach career cheater & owner paying the NFL to sweep it under the rug. I would like to see the NFL adopt baseball rules & remove those Pats Championship’s from the records & make them remove all banners as if it never happened. Then will you be saying drive for 5. Ummm No!!!!

  22. So are there patriots fans here, I assume. I am a die hard denver broncos fan and I predict this year denver will beat the patriots in the playoffs. I also predict Peyton will win his second Super Bowl an then retire. Your thoughts are welcome.

  23. So back to the game, what does Indy need to do in order to start winning games? What changes need to be implemented asap?

LOL yes, the NFL, which leaked lies regarding deflategate for months and levied the harshest penalty in sports history, is sweeping things under the rug for the Patriots.

  26. Since conspiring to frame Brady and the Patriots in the AFC championship last year, the Colts and Ravens are combined 0-4. Since being supposedly ‘caught’ with ‘deflated’ footballs, Brady has thrown 13 TD in 14 quarters, winning a Super Bowl and setting a record pace.

    Can you say karma?

My thoughts are that you are stuck in 1998-1999 when Elway won and retired. Peyton isn’t looking very good and he usually starts the season on fire and then fades in the playoffs. He is going to have to reverse that trend which will be tough with his age. The Patriots will be tough to beat again this year. I like the Broncos defense but Peyton looks old. If he proves me and a lot of people wrong, good for him, he has had a great career.

  28. “Lets Sign Ty Hilton to a team crippling contract, hes average but since hes our #1 we have to make it look legit Dont forget our Franchise QB needs a contract, but he can wait a year, he wont mind. Oh we can sign some 30+ year old skill players to go around him too, thatll work out, who needs an offensive line, we can draft some scrubs in the 6th and 7th round after we get some one trick pony WRs in the first few rounds.” – Colts Management

  29. Piping in crowd noises, and sticking a needle in a ball to frame the GOAT is about as low as your turd franchise can go. You have brass ones to call the Pats out for cheating, when your cracked out owner invented piping in crowd noise. Enjoy your dumpster fire of a season. KARMA IS A BIOTCH.

  30. Love all the tears from that cheating organization after their dumpster fire tonight….maybe the guy who pumps in crowd noise was asleep at the switch??? Enjoyed the cheaters getting their azzzes handed to them. TB-12 is gonna pull his best manning impression on u all in week 6 by padding his stats. Haha.

  31. Gotta love watching the RATBIRD fans agonize over Their dumpster fire too. Now that fluncoos salary cap numbers jump sky high and he’s playing awful…….lets restructure and get him help….lmao….you really think this overpaid, overhyped, one hit wonder, average Joe QB is gonna take a pay cut?? Don’t hold your breath. Get use to that musty smell as the RATBIRDS will be residing in the basement for the foreseeable future!!

  32. Luck and Wilson went to teams that are the polar opposite of one another. After watching the last two Super Bowls I bet luck has had a dream about being the Seahawks quarterback and winning back to back championships for one of the best organizations in pro sports.

But alas no he is a colt under an owner in a drugged up clown suit

  33. Will lame duck HC Pagano even last this season? I suspect not– the first bad meds day Irsay has, Pagano could find himself gone. Management of course never blames itself!

  34. To the haters bringing the Pats into this Colts thread…..can you enumerate all of “the cheating” of which you claim the Pats are guilty? I have asked this 100 times and none of you haters has posited an answer. I guess that is an answer….

Back to the Colts……they are awful. And so are the Ravens. I guess Karma does exist.

  35. Pagano is not the problem in Indy. The problem is the former lineman pretending to be a GM. Grigson was in no way qualified for such a position and his decisions so far should cement his termination.

Trading for one of the worst draft busts in league history, taking a WR in the first round despite having a wealth of WR talent, ignoring the issues on d-line, and failure to protect the future of the franchise with an adequate defensive line.

Lombardi couldn’t win with the scrubs Grigson has drafted over his tenure.
