Griffen denies Tate’s claim that Vikings took cheap shots

After the Lions lost to the Vikings last Sunday, Lions wide receiver Golden Tate accused the Vikings of taking “a bunch” of cheap shots at Lions players. Tate said he was “110 percent sure” there were plays that should have been flagged, and Tate said he wouldn’t be surprised if the NFL takes a second look at some of them.

Clear violations,” Tate said.

Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen appeared on PFT Live Tuesday and was asked about Tate’s claims, and in the opposite of a shocker Griffen sees things 110 percent the other way.

“No. We don’t take cheap shots,” Griffen said. “We are not that kind of football team.”

Griffen is rarely short on words, but he saw going further with this as a battle not worth fighting.

“We are moving on from Detroit,” Griffen said. “Detroit played us hard and played us strong but we are moving on to San Diego.”

  1. That is rich coming from a guy like Tate. I am sure there are plenty of players around the league that would not mind a shot on Tate if they could get one lined up.

  2. As much as I hate the Vikings, I don’t think the Lions have any room to talk here. Not after years of allowing Raiola and Suh to play as dirty as their hearts desired.

  3. You can’t deny they’re taking cheap shots at their mascot. They’re firing Ragnar! That’s embarrassing. They say he’s asking for too much money, but given how much they gave to players like Benard Berrian, Greg Jennings, and Fred Smoot to not perform, you can hardly blame him!

  4. For all of those who aren’t Vikings fans here is a funny tidbit: Everson Griffen sounds like the ladies man when he talks. He is also hilarious.

  5. The crybaby lolions cryin about getting beat up by the Vikings.Awwww. They should get used it just like everyone else will. Soft teams can’t hang with us. The overrated also soft cheeseheads are gonna cry when we beat them down as well. The whole league is nervous about playing this Vikings team and rightfully so. Scary part is, we will only get better.SKOL

  6. Zimmer said Barr’s hit was cheap. He wants his team to be physical but not dirty. He told Barr this much when he yanked him out of the game and yelled at him.

If you didn’t like it Golden, maybe you or someone besides one rookie should have got into Barr’s face about it.

Instead, you decided to complain to the media.

Reminds me of why you aren’t in Seattle anymore.

  7. It will be a while before anyone can take a Detroit Lion seriously when they call another team dirty
    SMH

  8. Well he certainly wasn’t going to agree with the guy…. even if they knew they did as such they would quote Pacman and say ohhh just got caught up in the moment…

  9. “…we are moving on to San Diego.”

…and San Diego will be moving on from you, just the same. 😉

  10. If you want to see a dangerous cheap shot check out Mike Mitchell of the Steeler’s targeting Carlos Hyde’s knee on Sunday . . . and he looked very happy that Hyde was slow to get up. Hopefully karma catches up.

  11. The late hit on Stafford was flagged and for good reason. Beyond that, I didn’t see anything that was cheap or dirty. Stop talking Golden. You guys wrote the book on dirty play.

  12. Maybe the Vikings are finally getting back at the Lions for the cheap shot Gosder Cherilus took on the legs of Jared Allen a few years ago?

THAT was a real Cheap Shot/Dirty Play.

  13. Vikings played hard. There were, however, at least three questionable incidents on Sunday. One, the vicious helmet-to-helmet hit on Stafford by Shariff Floyd. Two, the personal foul on Anthony Barr vs. Stafford. Three, the Stafford punch to the head after he made a tackle post-interception. The NFL should probably take a look at all three of these incidents and send FedEx envelopes if appropriate.

  14. Tate what a whiner! If he is so worried about cheap shots, the Lions should have brought back Suh! There you got you the biggest threat coming from cheap shots!

Oh yeah they couldn’t afford him! So maybe Tate and his teammates should have taken a pay cut! 🏈

  15. How about refs gave you Lions cheat play for 5th down in the 4th qtr on 4th and forever when clearly the ball did not cross the first down line. Stop whining, you lose the game, move on.

  16. I love Everson Griffen but he does sound like the Ladies Man LOL.

Hey sweet thing can I buy you a fish sandwich?

  17. You can get away with a lot in the NFL but the one thing you cannot do, as in ever, ever, ever, is complain after losing to the Vikings.

Look, it should be embarrassing enough to lose to lower level of talent that is the Vikings trademark but you only make it worse when you complain about it. Now its alright if your fans are complaining, that is the norm in Minnesota but a NFL player should know better.

  18. First good time Pete Carroll is crying about the refs jobbing him vs Geen Bay, and now Tate whining about cheap shots?
    It’s called Karma Jack.

  19. Not a Vikings fan per se but Tate thought the play of Cherilus, Riola and Suh-sie was just hard-nosed football and next to the retired Hines Ward, no wr takes cheap shots like Tate himself.

Well it’s clear that one of them was a cheap shot. Barrs hit was late and dirty. That’s not even debatable.
    ——-
It is debatable. It was a late push near the out of bounds. Ok. He got flagged. But “dirty”. Not at all. He didn’t yank him down, hit him low, blow to the head, land on top of him or drive him into the ground. He shoved him out of bounds. Not Barr’s fault Stafford went flying like a little boy.

  22. I guess if anybody knows what a Dirty hit looks like it would be a guy from the Lions!
I sure didn’t see any, for the Vikings that didn’t get flagged. I did see some obvious holds on the Lions that weren’t called.. and about that hit on Teddy out of Bounds…..
He learned to complain from his H.C. Carrol, one of the best. With 22 guys on the field going full on, you could probably call “Something” on every play.

  23. A replacement ref butchering a call on national television is the only reason anyone even knows who Golden Tate is.

  24. After playing with Suh in practices everyday, the Lions know a cheapshot when they see one. This is a legit complaint.

Whenever someone says, “we’re moving on”, it means they’re guilty and don’t want to take responsibility.

The “punch” to Stafford’s head that you are referring to, was more of a slap to get Stafford off the back of Trattou’s legs. Trattou was trying to get up and Stafford just laid there. Besides, how much could it hurt to get hit in the helmet by a guy who’s facing away from you? I think Stafford went a little hollywood with his reaction. The way he was getting pummeled, I think it was more of a “I hurt all over” pose.

  27. The hit on Stafford out of bounds was no worse than the one on Teddy the drive before. The one on Teddy that wasn’t called was worse honestly.

  28. The Vikings deserved the win as they played tough, but that was expected in their home opener after getting embarrassed on Monday night.

The elbow to the head on Stafford was a very “suhesque” cheap shot. Not enough to get called for a penalty but certainly cheap.

  29. Tate’s correct about this team ask the 49ers how they were crying last week and will be crying next week after Rivers eat them up, the vikes will finish at the bottom with their pass less QB

  30. I’m onto san diego, cant decide if i want to buy tickets and cheer on the defense against the best passing offense they’ve seen yet or watch the game and see how this defense handles the best passing offense its seen yet. decisions. decisions.

and then its onto denver and peyton manning.

  31. There certainly are worse things in the world than having your defense called mean. Then again, had Randall Cobb made similar complaints, Pack fans likely would be in a PBR-enhanced rage petitioning Lord Goodell to put the Vikings’ defense on double secret probation.

Imagine having no other reason to exist other than to make stupid comments about a football team, oh wait, you already know what that’s like…….carry on

I see the Vikings have fans again this week. They must have won.
    ____

Shouldn’t you be off calculating the odds against an NFL team suffering multiple injuries in the same season?

  35. I don’t see Tate complaining about the fourth down conversion the refs gave them near the end of the game. The official was clearly marking the ball short of the first down when somebody kicked it away from him, another official grabbed the ball and spotted it and called it a first down without a measurement!

  36. First of all I was at the game and the only possible “cheap shot” I saw was when Barr hit Stafford in the 4th quarter and the fact is he had just gone out of bounds. But if Tate wants to get real, there were a lot, and I mean a lot of ridiculous penalties called against the Vikings in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Let’s not mention the 5th down the Lions got when they scored their last TD. Watch the highlights. They were a yard short of the first after a fourth down play. Not one referee signaled first down nor was there any measurement done but the refs placed the ball down as quickly as possible and allowed Detroit to run another play.

On the next note, any Lion that has been there over the past few years do not have any room to talk about cheap shots from another team. I see Suh has continued his nonsense with the Dolphins by kneeing Alfred Morris in the head. Accident? Yeah right!

  37. The Stafford OB shove was late (penalty called), as was a sideline hit on Bridgewater (penalty not called). My take is that nearly all the hits MN dished out were hard, but clean. Which means Tate is whining and basically being a wuss. Shut up and play better, Detroit.

  38. What is embarrassing to me is how 1 person will post as multiple people on a single story. All of these are one person mind you. And these are only the ones I know about.

  39. As a Packers fan, hear me out here. I highly doubt coach Zim encourages his players to go anywhere past the boundaries of the whistle. I’m sure he encourages them to be a tough physical team, but he doesn’t seem like the cheating or cheap shot type of person let alone coach.

I’m not particularly fond of Harrison as he reminds me a bit too much of Roy Williams (always looking for the big hit taking credit away from the truly great safeties in the game because of his highlight hits) but even that dude doesn’t come across as cheap.

Same with Purple Jesus. You can and should say anything negative you want about the guy when it comes to his parenting skills and faithfulness, but dude just runs hard. Period.

Still doesn’t mean I like the Vikings or respect their fanbase in the least, but move on and accept the loss with dignity, Tate.

  40. I saw cheap shots aplenty from Minnecrapolis against SF. I am surprised the league hasn’t taken action.

  41. Packer fans, be wary, the Vikings defense is coming, hide your QB, RB’s & WR’S, they’ll rape, pillage and plunder oh my.

  42. Zimmer took Barr out of the game because even though Stafford was still in bounds . He told Barr the refs are going to call that most of the time. That is what he was telling Barr. Not that it was a dirty hit. It was a stupid play. Don’t make up any other thing about it.

  43. First they get busted having an orgy on lake Minnetonka and now their caught knuckle deep in a lion. No means no….rapers

  44. Wait til the Lions face the Broncos deadly D. Goldie won’t even be able to spell “cheap shot”. I can’t wait to watch THAT game.

  45. If you watch Zimmer’s latest presser he says that he called the league office about another issue and was told that Barr’s hit on Stafford out of bounds was legal because Stafford slowed down before crossing the sideline. League official says if a QB slows on his way out of bounds that he is fair game to be hit. Official also said that a lot of QB’s are doing this now in an attempt to draw a flag on the defender. Zimmer says “I may owe Barr an apology” (for getting on Barr for the hit)
