Raiders refuse to put gold markings on field

Plenty of you noticed in the Ravens-Raiders game the formation from Baltimore that looked a lot like the formation used by the Patriots in the playoffs against Baltimore, which some viewed as an act of hypocrisy.

None of you noticed a more blatant act of defiance, in either of the regular-season games played to date in Oakland.

The Raiders did not use the gold field markings that designate the NFL’s 50th Super Bowl. All fields, except Oakland’s, have gold NFL shields and gold 50s on each side of the field.

“The Raiders have asked us not to do that,” AEG Facilities VP and O.Co Coliseum G.M. Chris Wright told Don Muret of SportsBusiness Daily.

The Raiders declined comment to SBD, and the NFL said that the absence of gold marks for home games against the Bengals and Ravens flow simply from the fact that the A’s are still playing baseball there. The league said that, after baseball season ends, the Raiders will conform.

Chris Wright said otherwise.

“It has nothing to do with baseball,” Wright said. “The last six home baseball games are through this weekend, and there will be no gold marks for the rest of the Raiders’ regular season.”

While no reason has been provided the refusal to comply, Occam’s Razer suggests that the Raiders don’t want to acknowledge a Super Bowl that will be played down the road in Santa Clara, home of the 49ers. At one level, that’s because the two teams don’t get along. At another level, it’s because the 49ers had no interest in sharing their swanky new stadium with the Raiders.

At yet another level, it’s possibly a great big eff you to a league that arguably isn’t doing all that much to help the Raiders find a solution to its longstanding stadium woes.

Regardless of the reason(s) for being rebellion (as the guy who committed a recent assault and battery on that field would possibly say), the NFL’s willingness to just take it is the kind of think that would prompt Robert DeNiro to ask Joe Pesci, “What’s the world coming to?”

In all (or at least some) seriousness, a league office that spent months dealing with #DeflateGate fallout seems to be determined to avoid any and all fights with any and all teams over any and all things, opting instead to focus on the game, the game, the game. For all games played in Oakland, the focus moving forward will be whether the 50s ever turn gold/yellow/whatever — and whether the league will ever do anything about it.

uh…the stadium measure passed by the City called for TWO NFL tenants and the stadium was constructed to accommodate TWO home locker rooms (three total).

“No interest”? The Raiders didn’t get in early with the 49ers and then didn’t want to be tenants later in the process. Its on the team from the east bay, not the other way around.

  2. Harbaugh is a whiny hypocrite that doesn’t understand the rules in the first place. It was nice watching the Raiders pummel him.

  3. Not to sound paranoid but when the Raiders were playing nice with the league over the last few years the number of penalties called against them were way down (compared to the previous 40+ years). So perhaps there’s a correlation to the 16 penalties called against Oakland in the game against the Ravens to this ridiculous shield business.

Personally I’d love to see the Raiders win in spite of the penalties rather than lose as a bunch of league conformists but right now the talent level isn’t nearly good enough for that. I’d hate to see them lose close games down the road this season due to a renewed p*ssing contest with the league.

  4. Before we go down conspiracy road. Both the 49ers and Raider Lambardi Trophies are being presented together at different events through out the Bay Area. Also, both the Raiders and 49ers were equally represented at the NFL Kick Off party in San Francisco. The Raiders are sticklers for tradition (no alternative uniforms or changes to the logo) so this is just probably the Raiders saying no to gold cause it goes against the Raiders’s colors.

  5. The league won’t fight it. At this point, they need them all on the same page and agree to continue to go after Tom Brady. This the collective fight of the NFL.

  6. As a Bronco fan I hate the raider but this is why you love to hate them got to respect the silver & black that said two wins easy

  7. The gold 50’s sounded like a good idea but look awful. The number fades away when watching the game. I say just stick to white!

  8. A Classless act by a classless City..
The Raiders would be best to move out of Ol Kalafornie!
Tho I don’t like the Cowboys, and the Texans are a mess, Austin would love a team..
I’d suggest a team in Canada but you cant get into the Country if you have had a DUI so The Raiders and half the other teams couldn’t go there.
There are other States without a team.
How About Nebraska? They love football there, and the Nebraska Cornhuskers haven’t had an empty seat since 1962!!! That is, EVERY HOME GAME HAS SOLD OUT for 53 years! AND COUNTING! Heck they fired their Head Coach for losing 4 Games last year!
How About Utah? Heck some families could field their own team! LOL
Or how’s Richmond Raiders! I don’t know why the NFL wants to put a team in LA so Bad! they have proven they wont support a team.

  9. It’s a stupid idea, anyway. Bravo Raiders.

The apocalypse has got to be close….as I’m agreeing with something the Raiders have done.

  10. Rodgers Salary could easily fund half a stadium, at this point its a joke the NFL dont chip in. Tax payers shouldnt have to pay for the Stadium, its clear the Davis’ cant afford to build one so the NFL should step in.

For all Al did for the league you figure they owe them a stadium in his name. The Davis family should think about selling controlling interests in the team to someone with a bigger bank account at this point im sure theres plenty of wealthy people willing to own the Raiders.

Translation: It’s the Raiders (hatin’ the league) being the Raiders.

I am a lifelong Raider fan and bleed silver and black. Comments like this, however, are embarrassing. Just like comments about how the media hates the Raiders. I’m proud to be a Raider fan, but not proud about the nonsense from some of my Raider brothers.

  13. I agree with a couple of the previous posters. I don’t know why, but the gold 50 yard lines really annoy me. Maybe cuz I’m so used to the all white field markings. Whatever.

  14. They should fine Mark Davis a million and take away a first round pick for having a general awareness of a potential upsetting moment to Kommissar Goodell.

  15. Felons for fans, a sewer system that overflows with dookie, trying to field a competitive team for the first time in over a decade…a gold 50 is the least of the Raiders problems.

If the Raiders want a new stadium, they should pay for it. It isn’t up to Roger or the fans or the NFL. If Davis with a net worth 10 times more than Goodell can’t afford it, why do you think Goodell can?

And, so you aware, Al didn’t do much for the NFL. He actually rejected the merger. He did a lot for the AFL though.

  17. I don’t live in the Bay area and I have no ties to Oakland, but I’ve always admired how the Raiders find a way to give the finger to the NFL. Al Davis was a maverick, and I loved him for that. It looks like his spirit is still alive. Go Raiders!

  18. Who cares? If they really wanted to flip the league the bird for the lack of stadium support they should paint the numbers on the dirt gold.

  19. For one thing, the league would have been a lot smarter to keep the roman numeral, SB L. A large letter L in midfield would be unique and very cool. My sense is that the Raiders wanted the 50 in silver and were denied, so they gave Roger the finger or maybe even the big loser sign, “L”.

Seeing as we’re being scholarly on PFT, the “correct interpretation” you quote is NOT based one of the two surviving written versions by the man himself – English monastic scholar William of Ockham (ca. 1285-1349) – but a 17th century interpretation of Ockham by Anglo-Irish scholar John Punch. Ockham himself wrote “Pluralitas non est ponenda sine neccesitate” (plurality should not be posited without necessity). He considered it the principle of unnecessary plurality (but we now call it Occam’s Razor – we don’t even get his name right!). But the wider lesson is: never get your historical facts from a Hollywood movie.

  21. I didn’t know it was the other 31 teams responsibility to help the Raiders with their long standing stadium issues? Want to own an NFL team and you can’t get taxpaying suckers to build you a new stadium dig deep and build one yourself.
    Or move…..again!

  22. “At yet another level, it’s possibly a great big eff you to a league that arguably isn’t doing all that much to help the Raiders find a solution to its longstanding stadium woes.”
    =====================================

They’re multi billionaires of teams worth billions in a league worth tens of billions. This is BS. IF the Raiders wanted to, they could buy the land next to the Oakland Coliseum or make their own deals with Alameda County and build it themselves.

The so-called “stadium solution” is code for effing over the taxpayers once again. This is your workplace. You pay for it. We Alameda county taxpers are STILL paying for the last upgrades AL demanded.

  23. I don’t like that the NFL ditched the roman numerals for this SB. L=50. They could have incorporated that in the shield and it, IMO, would have been more interesting than the stupid golden numerals they are now using.

  24. Also, if you think about it. The NFL does already help the Raiders and other teams. It is known as revenue sharing. Maybe the Raiders should sock away that money so they can afford one in the future. IDK, just a thought.

  25. Lol. Good for you Raiders. I am wondering when the League Office is going to fine teams for not having uniform color gold like they fine players for not wearing the proper socks n shoes.

It looks absolutely ridiculous. Ive seen one version of “gold” look like the yellow orange crayola crayon color, ive seen another version of “gold” look like a pale yellow, ive seen other versions of “gold” somewhere in between.

Cmon League Office wheres your fines of the teams for not using the League Office approved “gold”

And of course the NFL shills named BSPN are putting alot of stats in the Gold shade. Makes me wanna puke.

Its weird that BSPN is up the NFL’s backside, considering the NFL gives them the crappy games to show on Monday Night.

Davis isn’t a multi-billionaire. If he had the money he would build his own stadium.

  27. Can’t say the Raiders have no right to be pissed. A very storied team stuck in the worst venue in the league, because of that they are one of the least valuable teams.

Meanwhile the league does major money moving for stadiums in Dallas, NY, SF, and of course the big daddy LA. It’s clear that SD will be one of the teams to get LA as two others team to LA would just deprive them of their own market. Kroenke owns the best remaining spot for a stadium and about 6 billion other reasons so that puts the Rams in LA as well.

Meanwhile the Raiders get nothing except a huge smile in south-central Texas and living in the shadow of the Cowboys instead of the shadow of the 49ers.

  28. Never conform! THE OAKLAND RAIDERS ….Commitment to non-gold 50’s :). Just Smash Johnny Baby!!!!

  29. As a Pats fan, I’ll endorse any action that constitutes “possibly a great big eff you to” the NFL. But I’ll also point out that it’s incorrect to say that the league “seems to be determined to avoid any and all fights with any and all teams over any and all things,” because they’re still fighting with Brady and will be until the appeal is decided.

  30. So just tell them that if they don’t conform to the regulation NFL Field for 2015, the non-compliant games will be forfeited and the visiting team sent home.

  31. Bob “one-shirt” Kraft ought to grow a pair and refuse as well….quit being a politician…..your fellow owners were pulling Roger’s strings and stick it to you…. I could respect a guy like Al Davis

  32. The bigger question?

Why in 2015 is there still an NFL team playing a regular season game on a dirt infield?

The A’s haven’t played a meaningful game since June.

  33. No problem with the Raiders decision here. If they choose not to comply at all this season though I wonder if Goodell has the beans to fight this battle? He’s good at going all in and laying the hammer down on irrelevant issues (deflategate) then ignoring some of the NFL’ s bigger problems.

  34. Al Davis was the commissioner for the AFL before the merger with the NFL back in the mid-60’s. If he were still alive I’m sure he would of done it too! Way to stick it to the NFL and Goodell, in memory of your dad Mark. Silver and Black for life!!!

  35. Oh for the love of….

They didn’t paint the 50’s gold because there is still a BASEBALL DIAMOND IN THE MIDDLE OF THEIR FIELD.

Looks like they WILL be painting the 50’s gold when they can actually paint their logo in the center of the field …and actually paint the end zones…and you know… MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A FOOTBALL FIELD?

NFL needs to wake up and realize that The Raiders really need a new stadium… and should get one before any other team who ACTUALLY PLAYS IN A FOOTBALL STADIUM ALREADY. If San Diego or St. Louis gets one before us… I will demand that one of their old stadiums be airlifted to Oakland ASAP.

  36. Raidersssss!!!! I hope the Rams do go back to LA & Kroenke finds out that they really don’t support thier football teams there! AGAIN! Bring the Black & Silver to St. Louis and they will have another great fan base for life! St. Louis Raiders! Sounds good to me!
