Geno Smith cleared for action, might be backup this week

The Jets have made it clear that Ryan Fitzpatrick will remain their starter, but Geno Smith might be back in uniform this week.

Via Seth Walder of the New York Daily News, Smith has been cleared after having his jaw broken by former teammate IK Enemkpali, and could be Fitzpatrick’s backup Sunday.

Asked whether Smith would be active this week, Jets coach Todd Bowles replied: “It’s possible, it’s between him and Bryce [Petty], [we’ll] see how much he learns this week. One of them will be the No. 2 quarterback, he could be.”

For a guy who walked into the season having been declared the starter, that’s a fairly lukewarm welcome back. But Smith had done plenty to be less than secure in the job, and Fitzpatrick has been solid, which is all the Jets really need from the position.

  1. smart move.

Bowles is kinda impressive two games in. The team hasn’t imploded and he is in the process of makin’ a monster d.

has another team in the afce finally hired a half way decent coach?

  2. With all of the scrambling teams like the Cowboys are faced with after losing their starting QB, the Jets have to be content knowing Fitzpatrick deserves to continue starting and Geno is available if (and when) something happens to Fitzpatrick, and having a rookie QB behind both of them learning while holding a clipboard.

So out of nowhere, the Jets are actually in a pretty good spot at the QB position.

  3. Jets, do yourselves a favor, don’t let Geno anywhere near a football, have Petty as the back up, and Geno as the emergency QB. Geno can ruin a wet dream. He’ll be gone at the end of the season, so don’t be afraid of hurting his feelings, as a matter of fact, I’d see if Buffalo would work a deal for IK.
