Byron Maxwell shrugs at criticism, for now

Last year, cornerback Byron Maxwell was the Legion of Boom’s Ringo Starr. This year, Maxwell is getting beaten with his own silver hammer in Philly.

But the man who signed a $63 million deal in the offseason is undeterred by the criticism inherent to playing for a Philadelphia team, and not playing well. (The $63 million helps.) As he prepares to try to cover Jets receiver Brandon Marshall this week, Maxwell explains that his upbringing allows him to deal with hostility.

“Everything’s in your face in the South,” Maxwell told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “That’s how it is in the South. They got Confederate flags running around. . . . I’m just saying. You’re used to sh-t. You grow up with a thick skin in the South.”

He may need even thicker skin if he continues to surrender a perfect passer rating of 158.3 to those who throw his way.

“That’s part of being the guy with the big contract and being the big free agent coming in,” Maxwell said. “I haven’t performed up to it, but it’s a new week against the Jets. I get to play again.”

He may not get to play much longer, if he doesn’t eventually improve. His contract is, essentially, a two-year, $25 million deal. With only $3 million of his $10 million salary in 2017 guaranteed, he’ll likely be gone after 2016 absent significant improvement.

  1. yeah, he’s been getting burnt when manned up or in cover 3.

Billy Davis is the main liability on that defense though. He can’t keep making these coaching errors with this vanilla D scheme.

Our DB’s are walked in up in a man press look. They don’t press, the WRs sprint on by.
    That’s technique and coaching.

    talent would help though.

  2. Chip Kelly is in way over his head. He played fantasy football with the checkbook bought all of “his guys” and the results are pathetic.

No head coach should be the GM too. It didn’t work for Holmgren Shanny or Andy Reid and its not working for Chip.

  3. Way to try to deflect blame/criticism for your sucktitude to try to get some level of empathy instead. Awww, hey you guys! We need to give him a break. He grew up in the South, none of us could possibly understand what that’s like. You were a teenager in the Carolinas in the MID 2000’s. Souther rap has taken over the radio, the SEC destroying everyone in college football. Spare me your hardships guy. This isn’t 1800’s Mississippi..

  4. Maybe he should have held out for more money this summer too. If they gave him more money maybe he’d put forth some effort.

  5. No head coach should be the GM too. It didn’t work for Holmgren Shanny or Andy Reid and its not working for Chip.

-it’s working very well for Bill Belichick and the patriots, has been for 15 years.

  6. When you watch the db’s that have left this system go on to be productive elsewhere, it is obvious that the problem is scheme and coaching. This is going on year 3 with the same problem. I like what Davis has done with the front seven, however, it is clear that he is lost with how to put together a secondary. Probably time to move on. Quickly!

  7. So, he really went with the race card. I’m glad he has thick skin. If he had thin skin, maybe he would be a little lighter and be able to run and cover the WRs.
I’d take all the criticism too if I stunk but still had 25 million in the bank.
    Criticize away.

  8. “He may not get to play much longer, if he doesn’t eventually improve. His contract is, essentially, a two-year, $25 million deal.”

A contract, and a scheme, that he is only 2 games into…

Chip isn’t BB. Hell, by his coaching record he isn’t even Marty Shottenheimer. There are many more stories of guys failing in a coach/gm’s role than having success. He should have partnered up with a personnel guy & worked with him as a gm that agreed with his philosophies in regards to assessing talent…but more likely the problem is that very few real gm’s would have agreed with the moves made this off-season by chipster.

  10. Still too early to be objective, only 2 games have been played. However, I agree with poster above, he maybe a product of the system as well. Just because a player does well in one place doesn’t guarantee success elsewhere.

  11. He reminds me of Adelius Thomas. Got money solely based on those around him. When he leaves the nest, it is then that we realize he is an ugly duckling.

  12. The idea of paying this guy 12.5 million per year is laughable. He’s worse than Nnamdi. Kelly is a fool. He should be coaching high school.

  13. Certain players fit into certain types of schemes. Many players washed out because they were drafted by teams who thought “we’ll teach him to play in our scheme” but sometimes it doesn’t work. for the eagles its not working with Maxwell, and it is not working for Demarco. Chip Kelly wants to fit square pegs into round holes and its not going to work.

  14. Game 1 was asked to single up Julio Jones and failed not a big deal, (most do). Game 2.was because the Offense couldn’t get off the field. Only really bad play was the late 4th period pass when he was to deep and jelly legged. He’s a better corner than this and the Eagles are a better team than this. Let’s see where they all are when December starts, it all comes out in the wash.

  15. You suck and instantly pull the race card. Not only that, but the comment really doesn’t make sense in the context given. Who gives a F where you grew up. The worst places in America are typically better than the best places in most other countries.

Spare us the rhetoric and play harder.

  16. Sadly the PC crowd is making it impossible for kids to grow up with thick skins these days. The wussifiction of America.

  17. He’ll be gone Murray will be gone Bradford will be gone and chances are so will Chip. They will all be playing for veterans minimums or maybe out of the league. Sometimes cash grabs aren’t the best thing for your long term earning potential. You see it happen all the time a player that looks great as a two or three with a superstar in front of them, or on a good team, takes the money and dwindles away on a mediocre team.

  18. Haha, and the legend of Pete Carroll grows…..best secondary coach ever??? Not to mention the incredible play and talent of one legion of boom. Guy was lights out in Seattle, clear to anyone who watched a game as he was thrown on constantly….Seattle is a magical place, too bad for Maxwell…Cary Williams looks like a new man since he came over….hmmm

  19. Maxwell is fine, as a #2 with a great free safety. If you watch him when he played in Seattle he was rarely out of position, but he also falls short when he’s up against a solid route runner. His upside has always been as a physical CB who goes after the football. His fists are like heat-seekers trying to knock the ball loose.

Let’s not hate on B-Max because he’s in a poor scheme with too much responsibility for his talent level playing in a mediocre secondary. Everyone knew he would be overvalued and overpaid as a free agent.

He’s a solid player on the right defense. That Eagles defense isn’t right for anybody except their opponents.

    ===

    Um, it works for Belichik.

  21. They put him one on one against one of the greatest recievers in the league in week one. That was inexplicable and indefensible.

As for week two, no one on that roster can look in the mirror and say they played a good game with a straight face.

Have we honestly become such a bunch ADHD addled dingbats that we are going to pass final judgement on this guy after 2 games?

  22. You Chip haters are full of yourself after two weeks. Give it some time or you could look foolish toward the end.

  23. He got worked by Julio Jones. He looked good in the Cowboys game outside of the long Terrence Williams TD which was in garbage time.

I don’t think anyone is in a position to write him off yet.

  24. I knew Chip Kelly shouldn’t be in charge of personnel when he gave this guy money, then turned around and signed Ryan Mathews AND Murray. Why do that??

  25. Maxwell replaced Browner, and did well because he had the same height,so the defense didn’t skip a beat.

Maxwell is younger, and bigger weight wise than Browner, but Browner is more athletic which is why he got the money.

The same height meant that qbs continued to have to throw to the inside rather then over the top of the CB, and then you have to deal with Chancellor and Thomas.

But take that safety threat out, and don’t have athletic LBs which take the underneath of the field away, and don’t have a decent pass rush which forces the QB to throw quicker into the LBs or secondary, and Maxwell and his height don’t have the same effect in a defense.

  26. Chip picked a bad year to overhaul the team. If he had kept everyone he would have gone 10-6 again, which will be good enough to win the NFC East.

  27. “Don’t blame my sucktitude this year, I saw a confederate flag once”
Instant excuse….just add water. Obama has taught his minions well. When questioned….cry racism.

  28. I like him playing the mini race card. I bet most of the hostility and crap he grew up with came from other black people but hey, better to bring up a flag and try and act like he was held down by evil whitey.

  29. “Last year, cornerback Byron Maxwell was the Legion of Boom’s Ringo Starr. This year, Maxwell is getting beaten with his own silver hammer in Philly.”

I’m sorry, but that is an all-time great lede!

  30. So he get’s $25 mill over 2 years whether or not he defends a single pass or get’s benched.

Unless he turns into the second coming of Revis, the GM who signed him should be fired.

  31. Starting to get the feeling that Chip Kelly has no idea what he’s doing in the NFL.

    C. Williams was horrible in Philly last year but looks good in Seattle so far. Byron Maxwell looked great in Seattle but is totally sucking in Philly so far.

    Hmmm

Read a couple stories how Cary Williams says he’s having to completely relearn how to play the position here in Seattle. That should tell you something

  32. Oh, this is absurd. He thinks he has a thick skin because he grew up in the South and saw some Confederate flags? That’s insulting to the people in the 1950’s and 1960’s who were were practicing non-violence while they were being beaten or attacked by dogs simply for exercising their civil rights; THOSE people had thick skins. When Marshall says “Everything’s in your face in the South” he should take a history lesson if he really wants to understand what it was like to “in your face” in the South forty years ago. He may never be humble, but there’s no reason he couldn’t be a little more educated.

  33. So the “real” money in the contract is not even close to being a damaging cap hit and the contract is structured to give the Birds an escape route if they have an opportunity to upgrade the position?

Could it be that Chip knew he was signing a guy who could do more than Fletcher and Williams, but certainly isn’t the greatest to ever play the position?

Those saying he sucked in Seattle need to try watching something else, as I think football is too much for you, maybe soccer?

    ——————————————————————–

I watch plenty of Seattle games with lung on my fantasy team every year and he was always the one getting burnt or letting up big plays.

  35. I really don’t think many people actually watch football. It is extremely easy to see that the reason any Seattle CB looks good is because of their Safeties and Front 7.

Browner is decent cause of his size but struggles with penalties.
Walter Thurmond fell off the face of the earth.
Byron Maxwell is just plain awful and it looks like his technique is just plain pathetic.
You take Sherman away from the Pacific Northwest and I guarantee you will get the similar results as the 3 names above.

There is a reason why Sherman was a 5th round pick. And with out Chancellor, I’ve seen Richard get beat quite a few times already this season Kenny Britt and James Jones names quickly come to mind.

  37. Can we just accept the Bill B is the exception that proves the rule? And it kills me to say that, because I loathe BB, but you have to respect what he does. But most coaches can’t do both jobs at the same time properly.

  38. Chip Kelly will bolt back to college after this season. Reminds me of that guy from atl a few years back. Looks like him to.

  39. “That’s how it is in the South. They got Confederate flags running around. . . . I’m just saying. You’re used to sh-t.
    ========================================

And Philly has Black Panthers running around, standing in front of voting centers with billy clubs.

  40. The problem isn’t Maxi, it’s Bill Davis’s ridiculous press man screen. They’re not press corners for a reason. Davis needs to go. Really wish they would have taken a flyer on Spags.

  41. You listen to him talk and you understand he can’t put a sentence together without using profane language.

Maybe if he were smarter when he lived in the south, no one would have gotten in his face.

He should be very happy because Chip Kelly — the so-called racist — paid him a King’s ransom to come to Philly. And if I’m not mistaken, he looks pretty dark skinned to me.

  42. It would be “playing the race card” if he tried to excuse his poor play that way. He obviously wasn’t: he was talking about dealing with hostility. So falsely trying to make it look like Maxewell is playing the race card…is you playing the race card.
Glad I didn’t have to grow up black in around those inbred throwbacks…

  43. The intelligence of people on this site is as concerning as Maxwell being asked to play man, no press, against Julio Jones. People are actually blaming Demarco Murray for getting hit at same time he gets the ball. Lol. I mean, if ya don’t know what you’re talking about, why contribute to the convo? Chip takes 4 win team, and wins 20 in his first 2 years. Now he’s a “joke” bc of the issues he’s had through 2 games. Good thing no other team is 0-2… Oh wait… Maybe the Hawks do miss “Ringo”…

  44. “Last year, cornerback Byron Maxwell was the Legion of Boom’s Ringo Starr. This year, Maxwell is getting beaten with his own silver hammer in Philly.”

I know Ringo was a Beatle, yet I have no idea what these sentences mean.

  45. “Chip Kelly will bolt back to college after this season”

I’m not so sure about that. To do so would be admitting failure, and Chip is not the kind of guy to admit that he failed. He’ll either make this thing work out or he’ll keep trying until he gets fired. That probably won’t happen this season (unless the Eagles go 0-16 or something like that). However, if 2016 doesn’t get desired results, anything could happen.

  46. You know for all you philly haters that call us filthy Delphia or what ever that have never even been here, it always amazes me how we get the pope the last two times, live aid, live 8, all of the made in America concerts and more. Suffer!!! The only city hat rivals us is nyc. Yea we don’t have a super bowl trophy but we do have 3 national championships before they became superbowls. It does not matter when you got them. It’s all history!!! Suffer losers!!!

  47. It’s been TWO games. This is why the rest of the nfl makes fun of our fanbase. We lose two games and everyone is ready to blow it all up. It’s not even our defenses fault were losing. Our O-line is absolutely the issue right now. Eagles fans give it a lil more time before you start hanging yourself in your closets!

  48. saints12013 says:…There is a reason why Sherman was a 5th round pick. And with out Chancellor, I’ve seen Richard get beat quite a few times already this season Kenny Britt and James Jones names quickly come to mind.

Chancellor was a fifth round pick too. Was there a reason for that?

Maxwell was a stud in Seattle. Cary Williams is playing well so far in Seattle.
    __________

Both of these claims are false. Maxwell was Jeckyll and Hyde in Seattle. Some games he played well, others he was the worst player on the field. I expected him to leave in free agency, but I was shocked when Philly offered him what they did. He’s not horrible overall, but Philly dramatically overpaid for him and for what he’s being paid, I don’t blame Eagles fans one bit for being upset. He’ll never live up to his paycheck.

But Williams is playing far from well in Seattle. Aside from the strip sack return for a TD, he’s been horrible.

  50. Max was great in Seattle. I have no clue what’s going on now. With teams not throwing at Sherman Max got pounded all game long and held up great. Of course knowing you have Earl Thomas at your back must help some.
