Lance Dunbar likely done for season, as Cowboys injuries mount

AP

Not only did they lose more key pieces, it was the timing of those injuries contributed to the Cowboys losing another game.

According to Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com, running back Lance Dunbar is “almost certainly” lost for the season with last night’s knee injury, the most dramatic of a long list.

They were also without linebacker Sean Lee for the second half with a concussion, but it was another linebacker injury that left them thin at the wrong moment.

On the play before C.J. Spiller’s game-winning touchdown in overtime, Cowboys linebacker Andrew Gachkar went out with a foot injury. That left rookie Damien Wilson chasing Spiller in vain, with the Saints taking advantage of his inexperience for the 80-yard winner.

The Cowboys will get defensive end Greg Hardy and linebacker Rolando McClain back from suspensions, but they’ll be without Tony Romo, Dez Bryant and likely Randy Gregory either.

“You’ve got no choice [but to bounce back],” cornerback Morris Claiborne said. “That’s our job. Even though you don’t want to or not, you have to because that’s the only way. We’ve got another game next week.

“It’s a long season. Our destiny isn’t written yet. We’ve just got to put this one behind us and find a way. We’ve got a lot of guys injured, but they’re going to be out and injured next week too. And the guys in the locker room, we’re going to have to find a way to get it done.”

Of course, the number of guys in there who are healthy enough to help is dwindling, and continues to shrink by the week.

  1. The referees in that game, and all over the league, actually, need to be sent some tape this week and taught what a pick play is. The Saints, and a lot of other teams I saw, ran blatant picks all over the field. Gachkar’s injury, in fact, came on just such a play.

  2. Another game put into jeopardy (though in this case, ultimately won) because a kicker missed a gimme in clutch time. If this keeps up teams are gonna start going back to actually spending draft picks on that position

  3. Another hyped up season after a decent year (for once), already plagued by injuries. 2010 all over again.
Cowboys continue to leave no impression on anyone.

  4. And good luck, you got the Patriots next week. You’re better off just forfeiting that game to ensure no one else gets injured in it

  5. That was as pathetic of a win as you can get, but then again, when you’re as desperate as the Saints, you’ll take it. The Saints’ win total will be in the low single digits this season.

  6. I had no idea who Wilson was before last night. He looked lost. I thought this was a PROFESSIONAL football league, hope he gets cut for that horrid play.

  7. It’s hard to properly convey how damn frustrating this team is.

I’d actually prefer that they get their asses handed to them, then to see them be competitive and still give up leads. This was the second conference game that was entirely winnable, in fact we had the lead for a long time in the game.

Injuries happen, but you can’t just fall apart like this. Especially not two games in a row.

I am beyond pissed off about how this team is playing. They are capable of so much more than this.

  8. I can’t believe the saints didn’t get an offensive PI call on the play that knocked gachkar out. The dude decked him on a crossing route!!!

  9. Injuries will be the narrative of this years season for Dallas as they will struggle to even get to .500. It is unfortunate those injuries will over-shadow the real problem….a terrible coaching staff and worse GM.

  10. Injuries affect every NFL team. Planning for them is part of the game. The Cowboys continue to overpay for their “name” players, leaving themselves too thin in depth when the injuries inevitably occur.

  11. If that had been the Cowboys winning with those two plays in overtime, this site would be full of articles about that illegal pick play that put the starting linebacker out on that final play…

  12. To all you whining Cowgirls crying about a pick play? Jason Witten did the same thing about 10 times last night. So CRY ME A RIVER…..

  13. After further review the officials are still lousy,it’s a shame with all the money the league has that they can’t come up with better officiated game, I bet that if one would look up the call difference against visiting teams calls compared to home teams calls it would not surprise anyone. Then again I guess that it is why it is called home field advantage.

  14. “but it was another linebacker injury that left them thin at the wrong moment.”

    There’s a right moment?

I know. I can’t believe the money they threw at Jason Hatcher, and DeMarcus Ware, and DeMarco Murray.

    Oh, wait…

The problem is, most of them truly do not know. They’ve been told to look out for it, and only seem to throw a flag when a guy goes flying or gets hurt.

Then in NYG/BUF they called the Giants for one and it wasn’t even an illegal pick. I see Green Bay and other teams get away with blatant illegal picks all game, every week.

You didn’t seem to have a problem having Week 1’s game handed to you. It’s like that in today’s NFL. Dallas fans think they’re exempt from dealing with what almost everyone else does. That’s rich.

  18. The refs around the league were terrible yesterday. It wasn’t just the flags that were thrown but the flags that were NOT thrown.

In certain games, the refs threw flags for barely-there infractions that normally are overlooked but didn’t throw flags for OBVIOUS infractions that affected the outcome of a play.

I usually dismiss complaints about refs, but I toggled between several games to see refs “miss” some of the most obvious procedural violations of rules that I have seen. It was a sad day for the NFL’s integrity.

  19. I love reading the self entitled Dallas fans tears of injustice because of a “no call on a pick play” lol
