Chip Kelly: We’re two field goals away from 3-1

AP

The Eagles are 1-3, but coach Chip Kelly would like to point out that they could easily be 3-1.

“We’ve lost three games by 15 points, so you hit two kicks, and we’re sitting here 3-1 and everyone’s happy,” Kelly said Monday. “It’s razor-thin, so you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water and say, ‘OK, we’re going to change our offense, change our defense, and change everything we’re doing with our approach.’ We need to settle down, take a deep breath, and when we have an opportunity to make a play, make a play.”

Kelly is right that the Eagles could have won at Washington on Sunday and at Atlanta Week One if they’d made their kicks: They missed a field goal and an extra point in a 23-20 loss on Sunday, and they missed a field goal in a 26-24 loss in Week One. The Eagles are the only team in the league with two losses by a field goal or less.

Of course, the Jets could easily say they would have beaten the Eagles if Brandon Marshall hadn’t committed the bonehead play of the year by lateraling the ball to no one, setting up an Eagles touchdown in a game Philadelphia won 24-17. If Marshall hadn’t lateraled that ball, the Eagles might be 0-4.

Most NFL games are close enough that the losing team can say that if a play or two had gone the other way, they would have won.

“It’s just one play here or there,” Kelly said, “and it’s a different story.”

That’s true, but that’s what every losing team in the NFL thinks.

  1. Chip, stop down playing your disaster. Your record doesn’t show or care how much you lost by. How many teams this season have lost by a matter of inches? (Lions last night, numerous game winning/losing field goals hitting the uprights etc) a loss is a loss no matter how big or small and 1-3 is still 1-3. I doubt your owner is saying “chip is doing a great job by only losing multiple games by a field goal, he was a great addition to this organization.” By the way, last years team wouldn’t be losing by field goals. They would’ve beat my cowboys and be winning out terrible division right now. You took a huge step back, THATS what matters

  2. That is a pathetic thing to say. Try a NFL offense, that would be a step in the right direction

  3. Whatever the reason, I think Chip is starting to lose it. Never mind 3-1, the Eagles could just as easily be 0-4. The cold hard fact is they are 1-3. You are what you are. Being delusional only wins you a ticket to the loony bin.

  4. Shoulda, coulda, woulda. All teams can make similar claims.

The difference between good teams and 1-3 teams are that the good teams successfully execute these critical plays. Bad teams constantly talk about being a play or two away.

  5. Even coaches play Monday morning QB. I mean everybody saw what happened. No need for an explanation. Your defense could not stop Kirk Cousins when you had the lead and needed to. When Cousins needed to drive 90 yards for a TD to win the game, they could not stop Cousins and go home a winner. They were past the point of blaming it on the kicker. They had the lead and they lost it.

  6. No one understands! Chip is an offensive genius. Mere mortals are just not savvy enough to comprehend his ways.

  7. I don’t follow college football so I have no idea what this guy’s story is. Former bobsled captain? Head groundskeeper at St. Mary’s School for the Hard of Hearing? Because the Eagles look terrible.

  8. However “true” it might be, the fact is that they are 1-3. And they are 1-3 because of things they did not achieve.

You are your record, Chip. That line of thinking is for fans, not coaches or players. You need to start looking inside as to what you can do and not look outside at what isn’t.

  9. Chip needs to do a better job.

Reid couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag, but at least he didn’t throw his players under the bus.

  10. Yeah, and we’re a Lee Evans catch, Billy Cundiff field goal, Torrey Smith catch and Anquan Boldin catch away from being a Dynasty. lol

    So freaking what !?!

  11. As the Big Tuna liked to say, you are what your record says you are. Anything else is just mental masturbation.

  12. Loser’s mentality. I would be rich and handsome if it wasn’t for my lack of education and poor genetics. Keep throwing your team under the bus, I’m sure they’ll just keep thanking you for it.

  13. thats how a blind man hearing the stat line only would call it.

but the rest of us have eyes.

  14. As a lifelong Bengals fan, jeesus do i feel sorry for all the eagles fans that have to see this bafoon on the sideline for another 12 weeks…can upper mgmt take the mic away from this guy so the rest of our sakes..

  15. Good teams score in the 30s on average and then the missed kicks, if there are any, don’t matter so much. Good teams lose 3 games in an entire season, not 3 out fo the first 4. Chip’s Eagles are an ugly offense for two or three quarters every single game and a solid defense for two or three quarters every single game. That’s not a winning formula. It’s not a winning game plan. And it’s not a winning roster.

  16. You are correct Chip! You are also…

1 win away from a Lombardi trophy
2 players short of your old Oregon roster
3 cards short of a full deck, and….
4 losses short of looking for a new job.

  17. Of all the bizarre things he has done and said, this is the one that takes me off of the fence about him and leads me to believe he will never be a great NFL coach.

No great coach has ever said anything like that. No great coach would ever think anything like that.

A great coach would be obsessing over the fact that they are one bonehead play from being 0-4, and would never focus, or allow his players to focus, on the “fact” that they could be 3-1. A great coach would say that they should never have allowed themselves to be in a position to lose a game because of a missed kick.

  18. It’s popular to trash Chip and the Eagles right now, I get it. As a fan, it’s really hard and disappointing, because we were starting to think the team might be something–especially after the Green Bay preseason game.

But it’s a long season, and I’m not writing them off yet. If they drop the next two games, then I’ll say they’re done. They still have a lot of talent. The reality is that Chip is right…a few dropped passes or made kicks away from a much different season. We’ll see.

  19. He went into the year knowing his field-goal kicker was either hurt, or struggling, and didn’t do anything about it.

So it doesn’t matter that they lost 2 games because they couldn’t make short kicks. What matters is Chips the GM is failing the team he happens to coach.

  20. “See, when we win by 3, it’s because I’m a genius. When we lose by 3, it’s bad luck.”

Is Chip even vaguely aware that the teams that beat him by a slim margin ALSO MADE NUMEROUS MISTAKES IN THE GAME?

  21. “You are what your record says you are”
    Bill Parcells

“Most games come down to just a few plays, the ones you make and the ones you don’t. As a coach my job is to have the players ready and in position to make those plays.”
    The Hoodie

  22. Here is the difference Chippy, you aren’t in college anymore. So you can’t have the mentality that running the score up on someone gains you more in the poll rankings, just like close losses don’t hurt as much as blow outs.

This is the NFL, wins and losses are the only thing that matters . . . at the end of the season you don’t look back and say, well we lost 5 games by three points or less, so we should be 11 & 5 not 6 & 10.

Put your big boy pants on, take the responsibility of putting together a team without enough talent to win (kicker, QB, WR, O-line, DBs – take your pick), not having your team mentally prepared for the game, not putting together a dynamic enough play calling and own that you suck. Stop throwing your players under the bus, which is exactly what you do every time you say execution, make a play, take advantage of a situation, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. At least Ryan in Buffalo will say, I was out coached.

  23. And if one of his own men didn’t mistakenly shoot Stonewall Jackson, the South would have won the Civil War. Let the Chip’s fall where they may.

  24. I see a Dennis Green “They are who we THOUGHT they were!” meltdown coming soon…

  25. 2 first half shutouts and an average of 10 points scored by the offense. I’d say they are lucky to be 1-3. Shame for Philly’s D they might be a decent unit if they didn’t have to be on the field 40 minutes a game

  26. The only thing other that would have been better than giving all that stupid money to Murray would have been Kelly trading away the future for Mariotta…

That would have totally sunk them for the next decade.

  27. As a coach once said who was much more successful in the NFL than Chip will ever be: you are what your record says you are.

This guy is hemorrhaging credibility every time he opens his mouth anymore.

  28. Yes, and Tom Brady is two ridiculous freak catches away from having 6 SB rings. But he doesn’t.

    /Pats fan
    //excuses always sound dumb

  29. Even if they made the FG vs. Atlanta, then the Falcons had two minutes left to get a FG of their own. And judging by how well the defense stood against Washington in the last 2 minutes, the Falcons still would have won.

  30. He is completely delusional. This happens to every team, every year. If we only made that play, if we only made that kick…

It’s over Chip, you are 1-3. Forget making excuses why you are, you have 12 games left to fix it.

Chip is auditioning & practicing for his end of year meeting with Lurie. “But, but we were soooooo close to 9-7 Mr Lurie…If we had made this play & that play. If Bradford only listened! If we only had a reliable kicker. I still think this is Howie Rosemans fault Mr Lurie, if he were out of the building, his bad Karma gone…”

Stop Chip. This is your mess. And Lurie’s of course for giving you complete control on players before you demonstrated the ability to win a playoff game in the NFL.

  31. “everyone’s happy,” Kelly said Monday. “It’s razor-thin, so you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water and say, ‘OK, we’re going to change our offense, change our defense, and change everything we’re doing with our approach.’ We need to settle down, take a deep breath, and when we have an opportunity to make a play, make a play.”

But Chip, THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID AFTER LAST SEASON WHEN 1-2 FGs WOULD HAVE PUT YOU IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!

  32. These coaches that don’t value a reliable kicker have no one to blame but themselves. That shows an inherent misunderstanding in the game. The leading scorer every year is a kicker. Try spending a little money on a kicker so you don’t lose your job on a few missed kicks. He’s the GM I guess it’s his fault.

  33. I’m a Saints fan and at least I own my teams record. While I’m optimistic about the young players, I also know their only win came against a Dallas MASH unit. This ain’t NASCAR or horseshoes Chip, close doesn’t count.

  34. And the GIANTS would be 4 & 0. Coulda, woulda, shoulda,
might have been. There still 1 & 3. THIS IS NOT COLLEGE Chip. Your playing with the BIG BOYS now. Most teams have very good DC’s and your going up againsat 11 defensive players who are the BEST of the BEST.

    GO BIG BLUE

  35. We’re only 5 injuries and a couple suspensions away from the Gloryhole.

    Dallas Cowboys

  36. I would be so pissed if he was coaching my team. What a fool!

I’m a Steeler fan. Not saying Tomlin is Chuck Noll but Kelly is way over his ability.

  37. LOL LOL LOL

Is this the best the head coach can do

Rutgers is going to be looking for a coach next year get your paperwork in early

Could of Would of Should of

  38. Whatever. Even if the Eagles had somehow lucked into 3-1 that wouldn’t change the fact that their running game has been terrible and their QB play has been at best average. If we weren’t keeping score and could only judge how good a team was base on their over all play this team would scream out 1-3.

One ridiculous catch from having 5 SB rings. Tyree’s catch was one in a thousand. Manningham’s catch was a perfectly thrown ball tossed after Eli escaped the grasp of 3 separate Pats defenders to throw it. Give the devil his due, for whatever reason Coughlin and Eli are The Hoodie and Brady’s Kryptonite.

Your right, excuses sound even dumber than you think.

    -A Giants Guy

  40. My Browns could be 4-0, if they hadn’t lost 3 games. There are wins and losses. No “coulda beens”.

  41. No, remember Chip is a genius! He knows what he is doing; right? I mean you gut your team of great talent and guys who know your system and this is the outcome? It’s pretty obvious.

  42. @jag1959

The escape from being sacked is part of the mystique of the Tyree catch.

The Manningham play was simply all Eli. He looked right, saw the double team & immediately looked & went left to Manningham, no Patriots touched him in the pocket on that play. The haters are gonna hate but quite simply the THROW to Manningham is one of the best PRESSURE passes in Super Bowl & NFL history. The ball is 1 ft in front of Mario, an absolutely perfect pass. Great job by Mario dragging both feet & making sure it was a catch. But he didn’t have to stretch or move to snag that pass, the throw couldn’t have been more PERFECT.

Eli gets no credit for that ball & every Pats fan wants to believe that pass a freak play when it’s the complete opposite. Eli threw one of the greatest balls in championship history on that pass. Anyone that doubts the greatness of that throw needs to cue it up & watch it again.

    ===============================================

I’d put Montana’s drive and TD throw to John Taylor easily above Eli’s throw. Montana was so cool in the pocket on the last minute drive that he was able to notice John Candy sitting in the stands. Then he yawned and threw a picture perfect TD pass to beat the Bengals.

  46. @granadafan

Never called it the #1 greatest throw…but is is one if the top 5 greatest throws in Super Bowl history. Eli was pretty cool & collected on both Super Bowl winning drives & did beat the team that everyone was calling the GOAT in 2007. Montana never faced a 18-0 opponent in a Super Bowl. Eli also beat a team the second time that wanted revenge so badly, they were motivated to best the Giants & once again failed. Eli twice led his team to championships in the last 3 minutes over the QB that is being called BETTER than Montana. But no one is comparing Eli to Montana (except you).

  47. They took it to the Jets early and held the lead. That one counts. I think they are exactly what their record says they are at this point but will get a little better. I’d guess a 6-10 season.

  48. When Kelley started trading away his talent I said from the start that he didnt understand that the talent in the NFL is so close that you NEED those game changers in order to win games consistantly. This isn’t college were you need a few blue chip players and your all set. Every player (well a vast majority anyway) are blue chip players. I’m no Eagles fan, however can anyone doubt that with all the players he cut/traded that he could have made up for those 6 points? Christ he traded his best two o-lineman then picked up Bradford!! Why would you do that? You trade for a glass QB and then get rid of his protection!! By mid season I’ll be shocked if bradford isn’t out due to injury.

  49. And if the team turns the season around all the Philly whiners will suddenly call him a genius. I like where the defense is going. Maybe we need one more year to re-tool what was a geriatric O-Line.

  50. The article says:
“The Eagles are the only team in the league with two losses by a field goal or less.”

… and at the same time states:

“Most NFL games are close enough that the losing team can say that if a play or two had gone the other way, they would have won”

Either the Eagles are the “only” team that have lost twice by a field goal or less in 2015, or they are not. That they where one successful play away from a win in two different occasions.

So “most” and “close enough” is not the equivalent to “only” and “one play”.

And by the way, Marhsall did not lose the ball inside the end zone, so it did not affect the score board directly. You are trying to hard to make -manipulate- your point.

  51. You run a college offense with mediocre talent.

Andy Reid’s players (McCoy, Maclin, Jackson, Foles) were much better at your scheme anyway.

  52. Coach Chip Kelly, please do the honorable thing and resign and go away!

Where are all those slimey folks who called Chip Kelly a genius as he was dismantling the team during the off season.

    Hell, he gone, Chip Kelly!

  53. Yea and Cow chip is two bricks shy of a brain. Who in their right mind lets DeShaun Jackson, and Jeremy Maclin go without any recoup !!!! Maybe by years end they will be 12 field goals shy of a 13-3 record. Coulda, shoulda, woulda

  54. And you could also say if Darren Sproles & Ryan Mathews catch 2 nicely thrown touch passes on wheel routes with nothing but open space ahead of them, then we’re not even talking about the Jets v. Eagles game & Brandon Marshall’s now irrelevant play as the Eagles would have won by 3 touchdowns.. In no way does 1 missed field goal & a missed field goal + a missed extra point in 2 games lost by 2 & 3 points respectively, even compare to a game won by a touchdown.

  55. So funny to read these comments after the last game. Fools.

Here’s a rule of thumb- if an offensive scheme can rack up 500 yds consistently with Mark Sanchez at Qb, the coaching/scheme isn’t the problem.
