Roddy White wants more catches, but will “bear with it”

Eagles running back DeMarco Murray isn’t the only player who wants to have the ball in his hands more often.

Falcons wide receiver Roddy White currently ranks fifth on the team in receptions with six catches through the first four weeks of the season. White, who went without a catch in Weeks Two and Three, averaged more than 76 catches a year coming into this season, so it’s been an adjustment to see his role change in offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan’s scheme.

“For me, at the end of the day, I want to catch passes,” White said, via Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com. “I’m not out here just f—ing around just to sit around to just block f—ing people all day. It’s not what I want to do. I’ve contributed to offenses for this franchise for the last nine, 10 years. It always bothers me when I go out and don’t catch any balls in a game because it hasn’t happened in so long.”

White said he’s been open, but that quarterback Matt Ryan follows progressions that don’t lead him to White. He was quick to add that he’s not trying to make waves, calling good that Ryan doesn’t go off script and adding that he’ll “bear with it” in hopes that more balls come his way in the coming weeks.

Falcons wide receivers coach Terry Robiskie said White has to set his “pride aside” and realize his job is to be part of an offense built around Julio Jones because that’s going to help him get the Super Bowl ring that’s missing from his resume. White says that’s his mindset, even if he wouldn’t mind having the ball a bit more on the road to that goal.

  1. See, this is the greatest thing about julio and roddy. It’s been a long time since there was a duo who are truly able to think about the team first over there own personal desires.

This also reminds us of how good matt ryan is. As devin Hester said last year, ryan never plays favorites, he simply spreads the ball to whoever is open.

  2. Roddy never has been one to keep to himself. I wonder how candid he would be if the Falcons were 2-2 or 1-3. Here is the thing about this new regime. They do not have any loyalty or ties to Roddy White. He was even drafted before Dimitroff arrived. If Quinn feels at all that Roddy is becoming a distraction or is in anyway disrupting the team chemistry, he is going to be released during or after this season. This is a team that just released the highly productive Antone Smith. Roddy White’s status as a member of the 53 man roster is not a certainty with this new regime. Far better players have been released from teams with new regimes>>>> see Darrelle Revis in Tampa.

  3. I am on Roddy’s side here. Throw him some bones Kyle Shanahan. You are a smart OC so you have to understand the mindset of a great WR, even an aging one. If the Falcons aren’t going to, they should just do Roddy a favor and cut him, because this will not end well if they keep running him out there to block 80 plays a game and never throw the ball to him.

  4. Also anybody who thinks Roddy is upset because Julio is taking his catches isn’t paying attention. Roddy is upset because Leonard Hankerson is getting targeted 5-10 times a game and Roddy is being completely ignored.

  5. Your team is 4-0 and you’re complaining about lack of catches. There goes any credibility if he ever claims to be a “team player”.

  6. I’ve met the guy, their are not to many people that you meet in life and say to yourself, “””this guy/girl is a really good person and if you can’t get along with them? ITS YOU, not HIM/HER He’s one of those guys that is really nice and everyone on the team LOVES! Heck, everyone likes the guy Teammate or not!! He is a good person, he’s always has been and HE IS team first! So if someone has a problem with Roddy or they don’t like him or get along with him? ITS YOU, not him! THROW HIM THE BALL ONCE IN AWHILE! “Regime” has nothing to do with it! Also they didn’t draft Julio! Well they cut him? Why not? According to your logic! Julio is also complaining that Roddy should be getting the ball more! JULIO is also complaint they’re running the ball to much! So I say they should cut him too! Your “new regime” logic, well has NO LOGIC LOL plus if your going to get to a Super Bowl? It’s only the 4th game of this season! Come mid-season and playoff time? They’ll be doubling and tripling Julio! So they’re going to need Roddy sooner rather then later!

  7. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, right? Looks like Roddy knows about his old adage.

He’s team first as long as he is getting the ball, as with any Type A personality receiver. It is the very definition of the position, “receive.” My fear is that this may end with the Falcons trying to force feed the ball to a vocal receiver, which may detract from offense’s identity. Time for Matt Ryan to be a leader here and deal with Roddy behind closed doors.

  8. Hankerson is not a scab on Roddy’s butt, he drops to many passes over his carrier, it will show up sooner or later….

  9. Silly Falcons staff. The team is made up of 53 players and building around 1 guy is just a faulty plan. Toss this team in the trash. I feel you Roddy. I’ve not agreed with this franchise for over 22 years. Also, Shanahan will undoubtedly leave behind a mess when it’s all said and done. Look at Washington and Cleveland. He’s a 1 trick pony. Sorry 2 trick pony if you add his papa.

  10. Has K. Shannahan done anything, anywhere, to deserve anything? He dad’s a 2 time SB winner, that’s about it.

He’s worked with the Buc’s, Texans’, Skins and Browns O. And now the Falcons during and 8-8 season. Not exactly murderer’s row of offenses there, 2 playoff appearances total, one of which was RGIII’s lightning in a bottle year.
