Goodell “very excited” about results of new extra point rule

AP

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says the new extra point rule has been good for the game, making extra point kicks less of a sure thing and more of a competitive football play.

“Our PAT rule, which we’re very excited about, it’s had a very positive impact,” Goodell said. “It’s exactly what the competition committee focused on.”

Goodell said that extra points are harder and more teams are successfully going for two, and he likes to see that.

“It’s about 94 percent success rate. We’re also seeing that the two-point conversion has gone up to about 53 percent,” Goodell said. “Both of those are very positive trends.”

The extra point change hasn’t significantly changed strategies: Teams still usually kick the extra point as the default option, and only go for two when the score calls for it. But extra points are no longer automatic, and Goodell likes that.

  1. I thought he’d be happy Greg hardy was gunning not only for Tom Brady, but also, Brady’s wife, her sister, and her friends.

    Rodger Goodell – Mr. Integrity.

BTW, new PAT rule helps the mentally tough and prepared teams – like the Patriots.

  2. Was Roger commenting from an “undisclosed location”? I’m pleased that Roger likes that extra points are no longer automatic. I was waiting for his opinion before I decided whether I liked it or not.

  3. Coward,
Like a petulant child Tom “Terrific” ate your lunch…..
You been licking your wounds for the first 4 weeks of the season.

    Shut up.

  4. He was also “very excited” looking at the tire display at the local Goodyear shop.

I hope no one told him it was Belichick’s idea. If so, they’d have to take him out for an ice cream cone to cheer him up.

  5. I would really like to see the league allow teams to accept penalties on the PAT instead of just adding it to the kickoff. In the New Orleans game they scored a TD and had a celebration penalty it would have been cool if the 15 yards could have been added to the PAT making it a 48 yard PAT

  6. Do away with ties now. The probability of overtime has decreased so much now that a chance of a tie should be completely nullified. And don’t retort with player safety.

  7. On the contrary, I think they should do away with OT in the regular season and just accept more ties, or possibly just play a full 15 minute extra quarter without any sudden death aspect.

  8. It really was a good change.

Having said that, it’s gonna SUCK to be the kicker who misses a game-tying extra point after his team scores a last-second touchdown. You know it’s coming.

  9. I like the new rule, makes it less automatic. I also like ndcarls suggestion above of putting a penalty onto the extra point try rather than the kickoff (although 15 yds for excessive celebration is a bit much, an additional 5 yds would be enough).

FWIW, Gostkowski’s record of 425 straight may now stand forever.

  10. Can’t listen to anything he says now without rolling my eyes and shaking my head. I have zero respect for him and believe nothing he says anymore. Can’t the owners see he’s lost all credibility?

  11. I’m just happy Mr. Goodell has been located. I thought we’d have to send out a search party.

  12. Wait until a team scores a last second td in the Super Bowl and the game ends like a fart in church as the kicker misses the extra point to tie the game.

  13. One down 2 to go, now if he would get get equally excited about The Hoodie’s challenge rule change and then kindly step in front of a moving bus that would just be great

  14. Is he also very excited that at least 3/4 of the teams cant count on making a FG longer than 40 yards anymore? That pretty clearly is the unintended consequence coming out of his latest foray into insanity.

  15. Hate the new rule. Extra points were boring and still are, sorry. Basically what they’ve done is make it a little less important to score a TD and more important to kick an XP.

I still fast-forward through them if I’m behind watching a game.

…..really….you thought we’d actually look for him?

  17. The kickoffs being moved up have made them incredibly boring. Touchdown, extra point, commercial, kickoff, commercial. Very bad move by Goodell, just like this London thing is.

  18. I am sure that the defensive and offensive players who risk injury every play love that the Ginger Hammer thinks it’s great that some weasly kicker can now have a bigger impact on the game. I mean bust your but to pull within one and now that the extra point is not automatic all for nothing. I don’t recall any fans complaining about the almost automatic extra point. There are so many other issues he could of addressed like increased use of challenging plays.

  19. It’s not “our” rule moron…it’s Belichicks you just stole it like the Pats draft picks!

  20. everyone – and I mean EVERYONE – is talking about what a great job Roger has done with the new PAT rules –

  21. The new rule sucks. I think the consensus was that kickers play too large of a role in the game, and now with this ridiculous extra point they play a bigger role than ever.

Nothing like an NFL game being decided by 5’2″ converted soccer players.

  22. Very excited about making trick 2-pt conversions confusing as hell. Very excited about kickers losing their jobs for no reason. Very excited about changing rules that were fine to begin with, while the enormity of penalties are sullying the game. And very excited that the refs were able to hand the game to the much more marketable Seattle Seahawks.

  23. I am sure the owners and fans of 31 teams are enjoying how the refs are impacting the game instead of the players and are so excited like Goodell is about the extra point changes! The league is on a record pace of calling penalties so you 31 owners and fans fan must be happy with what your hero Roger Goodell is doing to protect “The Integrity of the Game”. If you can’t protect the integrity of the game, ask Troy Vincent to recommend, BASTIEN’s OF INTEGRITY like Cris Carter and Warren Sapp, to speak at an NFL Rookie Symposium to tell rookies how to get away with things and find ” A Fall Guy” !

Keep supporting your HERO Patriot Haters: Roger Goodell! I will enjoy it when he makes up a scheme to screw your team over! Saint’s and Dolphin’s fans can tell you what a piece of .. he is!

  24. Goodell is “very excited” to finally be implementing one of his proposed changes (i.e. pet projects) without making himself look like a myopic and incompetent jackass in the process.

  25. I hate the new rule and all the rules that are quickly turning this game into flag football. Watch a game from 15 years ago and the you will be amazed at the difference. No more big hits. Just get the opponent down as softly as possible.

  26. I say scrap OT in the regular season. Ties are great tie-breakers in divisional and conference standings. Can’t stand the 2-point option because it’s no different in action to a TD attempt near the goal-line. Maybe offer a 30yd kick for 1 point and 45yd for 2 points. It is FOOT-ball after all.

Either way, it’s too soon to like the new system – wait until your team struggles to kick outside in the winter and lose a close game while your division rival wins a close one in a dome. A bad winter could see the new rules questioned.

isn’t that how Parcells won a SB when Norwood missed? what’s the dif?

people put too much emphasis on the last few minutes. there are plays throughout the game that if made would make the end less dramatic.

that saying about not leaving it in the hands of a ref apply here as well.

weakly kicker? bet you love them when they win a game for your team.

probably one of those guys who uses the term “grown man” or likes “strength vs strength “.

  29. So for this season using the stats from above, the expected value of a 2 point conversion 1.06 points. Expected value of an extra point .94 points. If they want to make it more competitive and exciting I think they need to knock the two point conversion back a couple yards so that it’s less than or at a 50% success rate, say from the 5?
