Golden Tate pleads for fan support

AP

He has called out offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and quarterback Matthew Stafford. Now, Lions receiver Golden Tate is calling out the fans.

“I’m the first one to say I love our fans,” Tate said after Sunday’s 42-10 loss, via Tony Paul of the Detroit News.  “I think our fans are amazing and they’ve been patient for a long time. Before the game started, I looked up, there were a lot of empty seats. Early on in the game, our team is getting booed. Later in the game, it sounded like the loudest they got was when Stafford was leaving the game and Dan [Orlovsky] was coming in. And that’s not the support that we want.

“When we win, we all win together — the city, as an organization, as a state. When we lose, we all lose together. And today, I felt like, at times, our fan base kind of turned their back on us.”

Unlike past situations, when Tate’s clarifying comments came at a later date, Tate explained that he’s simply pleading for support from the fan base.

“We have a lot of confidence in our fan base and we can’t do that without our fan base,” Tate said. “We expect them to be with us a little bit better next week. We’ve got a chance to still be special. I know that we’re not playing the type of football that we want to play right now, but we need our fans. We need them. . . .

“I consider us family. I think there’s gonna be times where family goes through trials and tribulations. There’s gonna be times where we don’t agree with each other as far as family, but at the end of the day, we’ve still gotta find a way to come together. It’s how I see it.”

Tate possibly sees it that way because he spent four seasons in Seattle, where the bond with the fans is so strong the team retired No. 12 in honor of the 12th man.

“I don’t see our fan base as just Lions fans,” Tate said. “I consider us family and what I mean by that, it’s more than football to me. It’s being out in the community trying to bring this city together, helping whoever I can who’s down. Right now, we’re just done. But we need the continuous support from our family, at the end of the day.”

No matter how hard Tate asks for it, he may not get it. Because no matter what he says, the Lions are 0-5 and showing no signs of life. Even if they win 10 of the next 11, there’s no guarantee they’ll earn a seat at the postseason table. Which means that the Lions family will, once again, be waiting for next year long before next year comes.

  1. Wah!

You make millions while the fans are paying customers.

They don’t have to be happy with the product, and at 0-5, who could blame them?

  2. I don’t think comparing the fans of Detroit to that of Seattle is a fair comparison. The Lions have amazing fans.

What did he expect crawling into our house with an 0-4 record, after dropping another heartbreaker on the road? There’s a difference between not being behind your squad and not tolerating such effort. We boo because we care about the Lions winning and are sick of the product on the field. You want to be cheered on? Do something to get people excited again, you don’t get respect just from wearing the uniform, you have to earn the applause.

  3. All I can say is welcome to a losing season in Detroit. We get rabid fast. Last season was just a pause. We only have so much patience and feel our whole state gets the shaft every season. We hate being one of the jokes of the NFL. Still, even in an 0-16 season, we’re watching parts of games 14, 15, and 16. That’s as fan as we can get. This season, when 0-4 and looking like a terrible offense, we still tune in for some of the game and will for the rest of the season.

Empty seats need to be a sign to someone. We need players who are fighters.

  4. Detroit fans take it from a Bills fan, a true fan wishes and wants winning seasons but they are loyal and provide support during times the bandwagon fans suddenly find a winning team and abandon their home town team. It takes a fortitude to withstand the ribbing from other fans included said bandwagon ones. Stick in there, when your team does turn it around you know your loyalty never wavered.

  5. I appreciate Goldens efforts here, but he has no idea what this fan base has been through. He’s year 3 into a 50+ year trend we’ve all been dealing with. He just doesn’t understand, and I can’t blame him.

  6. I’ll boo all I want when the Lions have been giving the middle finger to their fans SINCE YOUR DAD WAS BORN, Golden.

I’ll boo when the front office and coaches mismanage their assets, chronically. When the execrable offense that Lmbardi has”taught” after 22 games has guys looking lost, the other club knowing what we’ll run and doesn’t play to the strengths of our personnel.

I’ll boo when a team of “professionals” gets TWO Olinemen drawn offsides by a hard count from their own quarterback..while at home. When the gunner on punt coverage get past you and you horse collar him as he goes by. When two guys making $20 Million a year EACH, who have played together for SEVEN YEARS, can’t run a back shoulder option throw, because they aren’t on the same page, resulting in a pick and near pick six.

We’re tired of 58 years of being taken grated for, ignored, blamed and sucked dry of treasure, time and patience. The Ford tradition of rewarding incompetence with tenure continues with no end in sight.

    Get some perspective Golden.

  7. Ha, everyone thought the Bears would be the worst team in the NFL. The Bears aren’t even the worst team in the NFC North.

I’ve given up on this season. Stafford = Culter. Trade Stafford and suck for connor cook.

Bad comparison. Cutler has won two games this year. Mathew has lost five.

  9. zingo,

Since you’re obviously a Lions fan, if you say Tate’s comments were justified I’ll have to take your word for it. But from the outside looking in, it’s seemed like the entire Lions fan base has always been both passionate and loyal, even during the darkest of days under Millen.

  10. Absolutely pathetic display today…

If there was a word WORSE than pathetic to describe the Lions play today… I’d use it.
    Awful? Horrendous? Putrid? Nauseating? Disgusting?

Nope… they all apply… but I can’t think of one worse than Pathetic… that completely describes this team right now. It looks like everyone has quit.

  11. Feel bad for Detroit. Used to travel up there regularly for business and those people love their Lions, even though the Lions have never loved them back. Extremely nice people living through tough times for their city.

Those poor folks are living in Mad Max times. They need something positive.

But please don’t compare the “loyal” Seattle fan base to Detroit’s. There’s no comparison. Show me a Seahawks fan in a #12 jersey that can name a player on the 2005 Super Bowl team and I’ll show you my unicorn ranch.

  12. Tate is just trying to reach out to the fans and clear the air with sincerity. Give the guy a break. At least he’s showing passion and speaking from the heart like a warrior. Some commenters are so cynical and negative. It’s such a toxic way to live.

  13. He bolted Seattle for the money. All his talk about being family and sticking out tough times etc is pretty hollow.

Grass isn’t always greener, and the Seattle fans were there selling out the stadium through the rough years with Wallace as QB.

  14. Until we get an owner that cares more about winning than they do about profits I think it’s time to join my friends and become Packer Backers…

Don’t even start with that nonsense. I’ll agree the 12 fan jersey is cheesy. But I’m no unicorn and I can name the roster on the 2005 team off the top of my head and so can my whole block in my neighborhood. Don’t get me started on the Bettis bowl in Detroit. We played Pittsburgh and all we heard from everyone is how great it would be that blow hard bettis could win a championship in his home town. Than first quarter Darrell Jackson called for offensive PI to overturn a touchdown. Phantom holding call overturns another TD. Ben falls 2 yards short and it’s called a touchdown. The o-line was Walter jones, Robbie tobeck, steve Hutchinson, the guy we called the big Russian that wasn’t even Russian. Floyd Womack. We had hassellbeck, Alexander, d-jack bobby engram Jeremy Stevens. How bout safety ken Hamlin not playing cuz he got his head beat in by a street sign. And Leroy hill, logs tatupu and Anthony Simmons. What about chad eaton, that curly hair dude that played for the Rams for awhile than for us. So I can’t name them all off the top of my head but I remember the game and the team like it was yesterday just like I remember having the number 1 defense it the early 90’s and going 3-13. I remember Jim zorn, Dave Krueger, rich mirer, John kitna, warren moon, Trent dilfer. Chris warren Ricky waters curt with a c Warner. Steve largent Kenny easly Jacob green. My point is Seattle fans are just as valid as any other fan base. Not our fault we were terrible till 2005 and then again till Russell Wilson, Pete Carroll and John Schneider got here. Trust me I know. I was standing by the moving trucks while ken bering was trying to move the team not because of fan support but because he wanted a bigger market. Up here in Seattle we know how great our fan base is and our players know it too. Your the one who doesn’t get it pal. Your argument is tired and weak just like your teams roster and history.

    Bold move, admitting to bandwagonning.

Slow down little guy. Century Link has been selling out for years and the King Dome before that. The “12” was retired way back in 84, long before you were even a glimmer in your Pappy’s eye…

  19. Let’s not get crazy, matt2calvin. Not every franchise can hit the lottery with back-to-back Hall of Fame quarterbacks. Otherwise Green Bay would be worse off than Detroit right now.

  20. Golden “Larry” Tate unhinged is just the latest example of this franchise unraveling before our very eyes. So the FANS are now part of the problem, now? OK, I get it…..

If he tried this whiny crap in Philly or Pitt, he’d have had to change the locks on his doors last night.

  21. “When we win, we all win together — the city, as an organization, as a state.”

Not all of the state backs the Lions. A large area of Michigan are Packer fans. The U.P. is closer to Green Bay than Detroit. I’d bet Golden Taint doesn’t even know it is part of state

  22. Got to love this out of touch nonsense. From a guy who left a winner to cash in.

This guy is asking people who have annual salaries that don’t equal one game check to spend their hard earned money (potentially hundreds of dollars) to come out and support a terrible product.

Go round up your teammates and give the fans a reason to show up. Your team is garbage, and it isn’t on the fans to unconditionally support it, unless you decide to make the tickets and parking free.

  23. Sure golden as soon as you admit to the entire fan base you didn’t catch the fail mary pass, maybe they will cut you a little slack. Everyone knows that was an interception, but you still “claim” you caught it. You either don’t understand football, or think everyone else is wrong and your right. Not to mention pushing the defender to the ground who had position on you. This is called cheaters proof. Oh and by the way, not fumbling would help the fans to stop booing you and your team.

You’re right — Tate should’ve been more considerate of the 11 people that live in the U.P. instead of making such grossly egregious blanket statements.

I wonder if he’d still choose more money to go to Detroit than stay with Seattle

Yeah, because seattle is looking like the team to beat this season.

  26. Detroit Lions fans are disloyal as hell!! They turn their backs on a local guy(Joique) coming back from injuries he sustained for YOUR team for a rookie(Abdullah) who wasnt even on the team last year, and will not be anything in the nfl. Yeah, that whole situation pretty much tells me all i need to know about Detroit Lions fans…
