Rams sputter, but Gurley posts big numbers again

The Rams have a keeper in rookie running back Todd Gurley.

For now, though, they still have trouble finishing drives.

That inability to finish hurt the Rams in a 24-10 loss at Green Bay Sunday. The Rams had six second-half possessions; three ended in missed field goals and two ended in interceptions.

Gurley rushed for 159 yards on 30 carries, going over 145 rushing yards for the second consecutive week. He’s as strong and fast as advertised at 227 pounds.

He’s getting the hang of the whole pass blocking thing, too.

But his team wasn’t good enough to overcome its mistakes against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. The Packers scored first on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Rodgers to Ty Montgomery, then later in the first quarter Quinten Rollins returned an interception for a 14-0 lead.

So, the Rams played from behind all day and couldn’t sustain momentum despite trailing just 14-10 at halftime. The Rams ended Rodgers’ streak of not throwing an interception at home in 587 passes that dated back to 2012 and then intercepted him again late in the second quarter, setting up the field goal that provided their final points.

A 65-yard pass from Rodgers to James Jones provided the score that put the game out of reach for an offense that was mostly driven by Gurley.

The Rams fall to 2-3 heading into their bye week. They host the Browns on Oct. 25.

The Packers move to 5-0 and host the Chargers next week.
