Mike Nugent named AFC special teams player of the week

Famous scientists might not have wanted to give Mike Nugent credit, but the NFL did.

The Bengals kicker was named AFC special teams player of the week Wednesday, after he hit the game-winning field goal to help his team beat the Seahawks in overtime.

His 42-yarder to win it bounced off the left upright to go through, which might have been more science than art.

Famed astophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson credited the rotation of the Earth as a contributing factor.

While that might have helped, Nugent has done his part for the undefeated Bengals, bouncing back from a missed field goal the week before against the Chiefs.

  1. couldnt believe they got that last fieldgoal to tie it. i just knew being a bengals fan the clock was gonna expire, a false start, or the the sky would fall lol. bengals are looking better then im used to and its awesome. Who Dey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. He called the bank shot. Check the tape. 😉

Seriously though, he won the game, but he didn’t win back much favor with fans. He missed a few make-able kicks last year (the tie against the Panthers sound familiar?) and he has missed two already this year. He scares us!

  3. Good for him. He’s taken a lot of grief over the past year. Most of it was warranted, but I’m glad we didn’t have a repeat of the Carolina game last year. If he would have missed that overtime kick and we would have tied again, it would have been ugly. Hopefully he gets his confidence back now.

  4. Without an atmosphere to move the ball in the same direction as rotation he would be correct. But from his extraterrestrial reference point, the wind speed is approximately equal to and in the same direction as the rotational speed of the earth. Thus the wind, the ball, and the goalposts are all moving in the same speed and in the same direction, and no effect can be discernible from any point of reference on the earth.

  5. doinks a 42-yder and wins an award. expectations are getting pretty low in cincy I guess.

  6. Tyson is not an “astrophysicist.” He is a museum curator and science writer. He hasn’t lead authored a paper since 1993.

Once ya got the degrees, the title is yours for life. Your argument is like suggesting Cheney is not a hunter since he hasn’t shot a buddy in the face for years.

  8. Love all the excitement in Bungletown. Might get some seats filled for a change…

However, we all know this team (like the Browns) is destined for shame & failure.
